Hello
Inside
I hope you’ve all had a great summer! So much has happened since I penned my last editor’s letter. It’s hard to believe it’s only been two months! I was very lucky to have been able to go to the Worldwide Urban Sketchers Symposium in Manchester in late July. I love sketching so this was a dream come true. Five days of mixing with like minded people and learning from the experts too! Around 500 sketchers from 44 different countries attended and although it was an exhausting experience, it was also hugely inspirational. If you enjoy sketching, you might like to check out what events The Big Draw have planned in Colchester in October. Also, check out Colchester Sketchers. Their contact details are in the What’s On pages. Following my trip to Manchester we were off to Colorado for a family wedding in Boulder. The wedding was held at a place called Lone Hawk Farm which was a beautiful setting. A proper working farm with goats and chickens wandering around amongst the guests! Closer to home, in Chappel, Pattocks farm are opening their gates to the public. Why not take a trip over there. There’s more details on page 23. So - we’re now back down to earth and it’s good to be back on home turf and in a routine. I do hope you enjoy this issue. There’s well over 60 events in the What’s On pages and lots of local news too.

OCD Awareness Week 9th-15th October
While people may joke about being “a bit OCD,” this trivialises a serious and potentially debilitating condition. OCD Awareness Week aims to correct the misconception that Obsessive Compulsive Disorder merely concerns harmless habits or quirks. What Is OCD? 12 in every 1,000 people suffer from OCD, experiencing a range of compulsions, obsessional thoughts and repetitive behaviours that seriously affect their day-to-day life. On average it’s undiagnosed for 10-15 years, yet 50% of cases are severe, meaning symptoms occupy more than three hours a day. Sufferers typically develop OCD in their late adolescence or twenties, but it affects people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. They may recognise their condition, yet find it hard to believe their compulsions won’t relieve their anxiety or prevent harm. OCD’s four step cycle: 1. Obsession: intrusive, repetitive thoughts, images or impulses. 2. Anxiety: caused by the obsession. Paranoia or a feeling of over-responsibility may develop and sufferers may believe they or their loved ones are in danger from something harmless - or that their actions can prevent or cause unrelated harm. 3. Compulsion: behaviours
4
or thoughts patients are compelled to repeat as a result of the anxiety – although often, they’re not realistically connected. 4. Temporary relief when the ‘necessary’ actions are completed. Types of OCD • Checking: e.g. rechecking locked doors or checking that intrusive thoughts aren’t real memories. • Contamination / Mental Contamination: a fear of germs or verbal abuse, which makes sufferers feel dirty/ unworthy. • Hoarding unnecessary and/ or excessive items. • Ruminations (prolonged, time-consuming thoughts on harmless topics) or Intrusive Thoughts (disturbing and repetitive in nature, e.g. imagining violence). What Causes OCD? Genetics: OCD seems to run in some families; this may be a genetic link or ‘learned behaviour’. Brain differences: In some sufferers, imaging shows increased activity and blood flow in brain areas that handle emotional response and a lack of serotonin (a neurotransmitter influencing memory, mood and sleep). Trauma and Emotional Upset: Suffering neglect, abuse, isolation or trauma such as a break-up or bereavement seems to increase vulnerability to developing OCD. Personality: Certain personality traits, such as perfectionism, may increase the likelihood of developing OCD. While many people exhibit OCDtype symptoms when stressed, OCD is only clinically diagnosed
if symptoms: • Consume over an hour a day. • Cause significant distress. • Interfere with ability to function in day-to-day life. OCD symptoms may wax and wane, but if left untreated they usually become more severe. Treating OCD Fortunately, OCD can usually be treated with professional help, although improvement may take several months. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) encourages people to talk through their fears and behaviours and find healthier ways of thinking. Behavioural exercises including ERP (exposure and response prevention) support patients to face fears one at a time and let obsessive thoughts run their course without ‘correcting’ them with compulsive behaviours. Over time, this challenging treatment can help patients reduce symptoms or sometimes achieve complete recovery. Some people may need medication alongside or before CBT to relieve their anxiety enough to undertake therapy. Medication: SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) increase serotonin levels. At higher doses they’re often highly effective in treating OCD, but need to be taken for 12 weeks before benefits are noticeable. Patients with moderate or severe OCD may need long-term medication. Cake and Bake Chocolate & Orange Battenburg Cake This cake looks really impressive but it’s easy to make – just two flavoured sponge cakes cut into thin strips and wrapped in marzipan.
Ingredients: • 225g self-raising flour • 1tsp baking powder • 225g caster sugar • 225g butter, softened • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 2tsp finely grated orange zest • 1tbsp orange juice • 1tbsp cocoa powder blended with 1tbsp hot water • 4tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved • 450g marzipan
Makes 2 Cakes (each serving 8) Ready in 1 hour 10 minutes, plus cooling
TIP
Once made the cakes will keep in an airtight container or wrapped in foil for up to 3 days.
6
1. Preheat the oven to 180C, 160C fan, Gas 4. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl and add the sugar, butter and eggs. Beat with an electric mixer until the mixture is pale, smooth and creamy.
2. Divide the mixture equally between 2 bowls and fold
the orange rind and juice into one bowl and the blended cocoa powder into the other.
3. Spoon each mixture into separate greased and base-
lined 18cm square shallow cake tins and level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the cakes are risen and just firm to the touch. Cool for 5 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
4. Trim the edges from each cake then cut each cake into
four even-sized strips. Using a little of the jam, sandwich 2 of the chocolate strips with 2 of the orange flavoured strips to create a chequered effect oblong cake.
5. Roll out half the marzipan on a surface dusted lightly
with icing sugar to an 18 x 30cm rectangle. Brush the top of the assembled cake with a little more jam and press onto the marzipan. Brush the remaining sides of the cake with jam and carefully wrap the marzipan all around the cake. Use your fingertips to crimp along the top edges of the cake. Repeat with the remaining cake strips and marzipan to make a second cake.

The passage to adulthood doesn’t always come easy, and that’s certainly the case in these coming of age tales… The Smell of Other People’s Houses – Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock Much goes unsaid by the teenagers who live in a small Alaskan community in the 1970s. Ruth can’t talk to her grandmother about where her mother went, or the baby she’s carrying. Alyce can’t tell her dad of her dreams to go to dance school. And Dora can’t speak to the neighbours about how scared she is of her father. Plus there’s Hank, who just wants to keep his brothers safe. But as secrets come out into the open, and connections start revealing themselves, the teenagers may find their own solutions to their problems. A beautiful debut novel about friendship, love and family ties. Amy Snow – Tracy Rees Found as a baby in the snow in Victorian England, Amy’s only friend is Aurelia, the girl who discovered her. Despised by Aurelia’s parents, Amy is cast out when Aurelia dies. But Aurelia has left a treasure hunt for Amy to follow across England, to discover Aurelia’s secret. Along the way, Amy may well discover she’s stronger and more worthy of love than she ever realised. This enjoyable, easy read won the Richard and Judy Search for a Bestseller competition last year.
10
Orphans of the Carnival – Carol Birch Twenty one year old Julia is a sensation on the 19th century carnival stage. She’s a talented dancer and singer, but people flock to see her because she’s covered from head to foot in thick, dark hair. Travelling the country with one freak show after another, Julia finds fame, but all she really wants is love and acceptance. In modern day London, Rose may not look particularly dissimilar to anyone else, but she sees the world in a different way. A poignant tale of how society so often struggles to accept those who stand out. All the Pretty Horses – Cormac McCarthy First published in 1992, All the Pretty Horses follows John as he travels from Texas and into Mexico. En route he finds friendship and love, and discovers what it means to be an adult. The last in a long line of Texan ranchers, John manages to get work on a Mexican ranch, breaking in the wild horses. While there, he falls for the rancher’s daughter, Alejandra, but is unfairly imprisoned and barely survives. It’s no surprise this won several awards and was made into a film.
Foxlowe – Eleanor Wasserberg The Foxlowe estate is supposed to be a utopia – a haven from the modern world. New people leave their names and troubles in the outside world. But Green isn’t like the others. She was born at Foxlowe and, together with the other ‘ungrowns’, Blue and Toby, Green can be punished for the smallest infraction. As the cult’s leader, Freya, tries to keep the ‘Bad’ out, the punishments become increasingly cruel. Blue and Toby want to escape, but Foxlowe is all Green has ever known, and her desperation to win Freya’s approval has devastating consequences. This is an unsettling, haunting read that leaves many unanswered questions, but is impossible to put down. Nevernight – Jay Kristoff Set in a city built from the bones of a long-dead god, Nevernight follows the fortunes of 16-yearold Mia. Aided only by her ‘shadow cat’, Mia’s on a quest to become an assassin and wreak revenge on the people who betrayed her family. Think Kill Bill meets Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, with an extra helping of darkness, sex, violence and poetry added in for good measure.

Country Mutters Top of the Form...
At any given time I reckon there are at least 29 assorted forms jostling for my attention and rudely pestering to be filled in. They lurk in my work in-tray, they plop through my letterbox in a self-satisfied manner and litter the dining room table while I’m gathering the strength to deal with them. I turn on the computer and 15 more arrive into my Inbox, labelled urgent, last date to return by yesterday. They have nasty warnings attached – send it back late/incomplete/wrong (delete as appropriate) and you’ll be instantly sacked, stripped of your possessions and flung into a gulag. They have tiny niggling boxes when you need to supply reams of information and large boxes in which to type ‘n/a’. They run to pages and pages, each question more demanding than the last. They require you to remember the exact date of your car accident 15 years ago, how much it would cost to replace the entire contents of your house, the inside leg measurement of your cat. All of which requires much lifting down of heavy boxes from the top of wardrobes and hunting through dusty files to find barely legible yellowing pieces of paper which ‘any normal person would have thrown away years ago’, according to Husband. I point out that it’s a good job I didn’t, but I’m never given any credit in cases like these, presumably because it might encourage me to fill the house with more ‘useless stuff’.

By Lady Muck
It was bad enough in the old days of quill pen and ink, when a job application form had to be filled in not only without making a single mistake but also in your best handwriting – a Herculean task of concentration. Now you get to download a form but just hope it’s compatible with your ancient technology because if not the boxes slide around like staircases at Hogwarts and you find yourself inputting your age into the space for ‘present salary’ (yeah – I wish). The first battle is deciphering the instructions as to which form you have to fill in. ‘Fill in the pink form if you are less than 55 years old but more than 54. Fill in the yellow form if you are likely to be dead within the next 5 years. Fill in the blue form if you’re beginning to wish you will be dead in the next 5 minutes’ and so on. And the information required always has to be black or white. There’s never a box to say ‘somewhere in the middle, actually’ or ‘both apply – depends on how I feel on any given day’. Life is never black or white. It’s more 50 shades of gray but with fewer spicy bits. I ‘ve heard of a new phenomenom in the world of form filling. 2 forms are sent to you. Form a is optional – if it’s not applicable you don’t need to fill it in – great! But then, if you didn’t fill in form a, you are required to fill in form b to explain why you didn’t fill in form a. I’d really like to meet the person who thought that one up – I have a number of suggestions of where said person could file their forms.

Home & Interiors Open Plan Living
By Katherine Sorrell your space is very long and thin, painting the end walls in a deeper shade makes them appear closer, thus improving the proportions, while a neutral scheme throughout can be given matching accents of a brighter colour – say, a rug in the living area, glasses on the dining table and a couple of kitchen accessories – for a smart and interesting look.
Who doesn’t love the idea of living in a light, bright and airy open-plan space? Katherine Sorrell explains how to get the most out of it. We’ve all hankered for a large, open-plan living space – where family and friends can be relaxed and sociable together, yet do their own thing at the same time. And the key to ensuring that an open-plan room looks good and functions brilliantly is careful planning. Start by thinking about how you’ll use the space – for cooking, informal eating, entertaining, working, relaxing and so on – and divide it into appropriate areas. Just as if they were separate rooms, but without conventional dividing walls. In some cases these separate zones can be created with changes of level, but generally they’re achieved through the considered use of flooring, colour and pattern, lighting and the positioning of furniture.
14
Choosing flooring for a multi-purpose space can be problematic, as kitchens/halls need something splash-proof that can be mopped, while sitting areas ought to feel inviting and comfortable. There are two solutions. Either use different (but complementary) floorings, thus automatically creating visually distinct zones, or lay one practical flooring throughout, giving a sleek and flowing look. Stone or ceramic tiles, engineered or laminate floorboards, rubber and good quality vinyl are all suitable – simply soften with woven or fluffy rugs around your sofas and chairs to create the framework for a separate ‘living’ area. Pale colours will emphasise open, airy spaces, while darker shades are dramatic and can help make large areas feel cosy. One option in an open-plan room is to zone the scheme by using tones of one colour, going from light at one end to darker at the other. If
You may find that conventional furniture doesn’t work as well as expected in an open-plan space – in which case search for larger-than-average pieces, bearing in mind that they have to look good from all angles, not just the front. What you need to avoid, especially in a larger room, is placing the seating around the edges, or spacing it too far apart. Steer clear of the hospital-waitingroom or furniture-showroom look at all costs. Instead, group your seating so that sofas and chairs are sociable, either facing each other or creating a corner (modular units are good for this). If you’re starting from scratch with an open-plan design, try to include an island or peninsular unit between the kitchen and the rest of the room. That way, you get a visual break between the two zones and the cook can comfortably chat with family or guests while preparing food. Kitchen manufacturers now produce plenty of products that blend kitchen, dining and living functions, from cabinets that co-ordinate with free-standing

storage to media units that incorporate a TV, so it’s no longer hard to design a space that blends easily from one zone to another.
or the dishwasher gurgling so, if possible, put your washing machine somewhere separate and buy super-quiet appliances.
One final point: bear in mind that sound carries, and you won’t be able to shut a door to block it out. If you’re eating dinner, watching TV or catching up on emails, you won’t want to be disturbed by the extractor fan howling

get the light right
Good lighting makes a big difference in any room, and is especially important for open-plan living, helping to zone the space and provide either strong illumination or soft ambience. Food preparation areas need bright lights, which can usually be built into the bottoms of wall-mounted cabinets or, if you have an island unit, can take the form of a ceiling-mounted track or a row of pendants. In dining and living areas, meanwhile, you’ll want flexible lighting that can be turned up or down easily. Experts advise installing a range of circuits that can be controlled by separate switches or dimmers but, unless you’re at the building-work stage, this will involve a fair bit of disruption (not to mention the extra expense). Instead, simply introduce flexibility by replacing main light switches with dimmers and plugging in a selection of table or floor lamps at strategic points.

Need for Governors in Colchester Schools
Education charity SGOSS alongside EES for Schools are currently helping a number of schools across Colchester to recruit volunteers who can serve as school governors and help drive improvement and help ensure local children are receiving the best possible education. The schools include Broomgrove Junior School, Cherry Tree Primary School, Unity Primary Academy and St George’s Infant and Nursery School. We currently have 13 vacancies registered in schools in and around Colchester.
Please mention The Connection when responding to adverts
Your skills and experience can help schools improve; governing bodies need a full depth and breadth of skills to be most effective. The most important attribute in any governor is the passion to improve local education.
Governing boards play a crucial part in raising school standards in three key capacities: setting the strategic direction of the school, monitoring its performance and ensuring that the schools budget is spent appropriately. The board helps ensure there are strategies for success in place that allow the senior leadership team and teaching staff to provide excellent education to their pupils. You don’t need to be an educational expert, volunteers receive free training and many companies are very supportive of staff in their voluntary roles within schools. The average governor commits 15 hours per academic term to the role and gets to test their hard earned professional skills in a new and challenging yet highly rewarding setting.
To learn more about how you can help drive educational excellence in Colchester please visit www.becomeagovernor.com or contact William Durham on 020 7288 9535/ william.durham@ sgoss.org.uk.

The 2016 theme, The STEAM powered Big Draw Festival 2016, is part of the charity’s campaign to give the arts subjects parity with Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, so that STEM becomes STEAM. 30

Garden Fireworks by Pippa Greenwood
With bonfire night on November 5th just around the corner, you may be planning to celebrate with the traditional display of fantastic fireworks - but why not also think ahead and plant yourself a few garden fireworks to enjoy for years to come? At this time of year, there are still several flowers that look stunning in the border and very much remind me of fireworks. Red hot pokers or kniphofias, also aptly known as torch lilies, are flamboyant plants that are mostly natives of southern and eastern Africa. Try Kniphofia ‘Brimstone’ for a rich yellowy-orange colour, or if you want something smaller then how about ‘Little Maid’, which has ivory flower spikes topped with a warm yellowish tint and reaches a height of about 2 ft (60cm). ‘Fiery Fred’ really lives up to its name with extremely bright orangey-red flowers, while ‘Alcazar’ has blazing red flowers. They should be available in garden centres now, and they do well if

planted out in early autumn or spring in a sunny spot with a well drained soil. Once established you will have a regular display that really will go off like a rocket! The crocosmias too help to provide some much needed colour at this time of year, and if you want a real splash of fire then take a look at ‘Lucifer’, with its flame-red, almost trumpet-shaped flowers clustered along an elegantly arching spike, or for golden yellow flowers consider ‘Canary Bird’. There are lots of different varieties of crocosmia (once known as montbretia) and provided you choose a site with sun or part shade in a well drained yet also moist soil, they will thrive – but that bit of moisture is essential if they are to flower as you hope. Grow them in completely dry conditions and you will be bitterly disappointed. Pot-grown plants should be available for planting now or in the spring, or you can buy the corms to plant towards the end of winter and, provided they are in the right spot, these plants
will look like the ultimate elegant arching firework. If fireworks that look like clusters of stars are more your scene, then take a look at the sedums or ice plants, many of which have star-shaped flowers, either clustered together in tight heads or held as stunningly pretty single flowers. Some of the sedums, such as ‘Autumn Joy’, are still just about in flower at present, but even if you have missed much of the display for this year, plant pot-grown specimens now and you can guarantee that from late summer you will have a tremendous show of blooms for several weeks, certain to attract bees and butterflies. The angels’ fishing rods, diorama, also have arching stems which are produced in great numbers surrounded by broad, almost grass-like leaves, each measuring up to 5 ft (1.5m) in length. The stems are covered with rich pink funnel-shaped flowers about 2 in (5cm) long, which dangle and sway in the wind

- and the great thing about them is that they just keep on bobbing straight back up again, even on a windy site. Thinking ahead to the summer, consider growing some lupins, either one of the many yellow varieties or one of my favourites, ‘My Castle’, which has rich red flowers - just like a rocket racing skywards, but far less noisy. If you want a tree in your garden but don’t have much space, then the Kilmarnock willow, Salix caprea ‘Kilmarnock’, is a good option, and reaches a height of no more than 6 ft (1.8 m) after 10 or 15 years. It has long weeping branches and bright yellow fuzzy catkins that cluster all over the stems before the leaves break in
spring, far better than any real Roman candle I know! At this time of year, look around nearby gardens and see what a fantastic display autumn foliage can put on. Plant anything with good autumn colour and you could guarantee you will have a glowing bonfire each and every autumn. A visit to your garden centre at this time of year will reveal a plentiful supply of shrubs and trees putting on a fine display to make you reach for your wallet in double quick time. And finally, when you are thinking about Guy Fawkes’ night, remember that if you are going to have a firework display, try and make that bonfire at the last minute in
order to minimise the risk of hedgehogs or other wildlife hiding beneath the heap and then coming to an untimely end. The hedgehog is one of the gardener’s best friends, as it eats huge numbers of slugs and many other garden pests. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com to book Pippa for a gardening talk, or peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items, including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, pull-out EasyTunnels, ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Voucher cards, signed books and lots more besides.

Microchipping your dog New legislation has made it compulsory to have your dog microchipped if it is eight weeks old or over. The government’s aim in introducing the new rules from 6th April 2016 is to relieve the pressure on local authorities and animal welfare charities to care for lost dogs. The legislation also encourages responsible pet ownership, and helps to protect dogs in society generally. Microchipping your dog will make it easier for you to be reunited should they be lost or stolen, as your contact details are placed on an approved database. How does microchipping work? A tiny electronic chip is implanted under your dog’s skin, between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique number which correlates with your contact details, so it’s important to make sure that these are up to date.
Puzzle Solutions
PETS Microchipping doesn’t hurt your dog, and no anaesthetic is needed. It can be carried out by a vet, in pet retail outlets, re-homing centres, or via charity organisations such as Dogs Trust who carry out the procedure free of charge. What if your dog isn’t microchipped? If you don’t microchip your dog you risk a fine of £500, and even criminal prosecution in some cases. You’ll receive a warning notice giving you 21 days in which to comply. Dog wardens and other enforcers including community support officers have the right to seize your dog and make sure it is microchipped, and to reclaim the cost from you later. It’s also a requirement under the new legislation that your contact details are kept up to date on the approved database. http://www.petplan.co.uk/microchip-dog-law-info/ https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/help-advice/ microchipping/microchipping-faq-page By Ann Haldon
