Hello
I’m sticking my neck out asking this question - but what do you think of our great front cover? Colchester Zoo is celebrating their 50th birthday and you can read all about their Stand Tall project on pages 12 and 13. Also, there’s a chance to win a family ticket to the Zoo. All you need to do to enter is look for the six giraffes hiding within these pages. As usual we have lots for you to do in our What’s On pages, including all the usual floral offerings for this time of year. We also have two delicious recipes on pages 22 and 35, book reviews on page 6 and an interview with the organiser of the Secret Vintage Fairs on page 33. Finally, we thoroughly enjoyed the walk featured in the last issue which took us all round Polstead and we are now looking forward to sampling the walk featured in this edition on page 14 which will take us to Fordham Forest. I’d like to thank Derek Keeble for supplying us with such beautiful walks. The hand drawn maps can be downloaded from our website. Until next time - have a great Summer!

Making a Song and Dance of It The West End will soon be heaving again as tourists flock to see the hottest musicals. Many of them started life as novels, plays and poetry, and the authors’ words were adapted into catchy show-tunes and moving ballads. Here’s our pick of the bestloved tales to get the toe-tapping treatment. Pygmalion George Bernard Shaw Long before Julie Andrews was beaten to the film role by Audrey Hepburn, My Fair Lady began life as Bernard Shaw’s triumphant comic play Pygmalion. The deliciously arrogant Professor Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can turn ‘guttersnipe’ Eliza Doolittle into a lady but she is far from being the downtrodden flower girl he believes her to be. It’s one of Shaw’s greatest critiques of the English class system and it’s abso-bloomin’-lutely hilarious to boot. Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats T.S. Eliot When Cats were merely kittens in Lloyd Webber’s eyes, readers were curling up in a sunny corner with T.S. Eliot’s Practical Cats. Writing under the name ‘Old Possum’ in letters to his godchildren, Eliot’s poems included tales of Macavity, Mr. Mistoffelees and Bustopher Jones. The charming collection is much-loved the world over for its unique take on cat psychology. Les Miserables Victor Hugo Jean Valjean is a man who’s desperate to escape his past, but with a policeman like
6
Javert on his tail, this escaped convict is going to have a battle on his hands. Les Mis has everything: mistaken identity, injustice and love, all set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. It’s the world’s longest running musical, and most recently gave us the cinematic opportunity to see Hugh Jackman without a shirt on. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Ian Fleming Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Musical Car was written by Ian Fleming of James Bond fame, who penned the original threepart series for his son. The idea has to be every child’s dream: a flying car. Inventor Caratacus Potts restores a second-hand vehicle and he and his children name it after the sound of a backfiring engine. It soon becomes clear that Chitty isn’t your average automobile and the family embarks on an adventure that involves kidnap and gangsters, crosschannel flying and some bizarre characters. When Chitty made it to the West End, audiences poured in to see the flying car in all its glory. Oliver Twist Charles Dickens Fagin told his boys they ‘gotta pick a pocket or two’ and
composer Lionel Bart picked more than an idea or two from Dickens, transposing the Victorian London of Oliver Twist to the stage, along with the wonderful characters of Twist himself, lovable rogue The Artful Dodger and simply terrifying thug, Bill Sykes. Dickens’ novel opens with Twist enduring life in the workhouse before being taken on by an undertaker. He escapes, only to fall in with Fagin’s gang of pickpockets. The book’s a lot darker than the musical with the brutality of the streets along with the poverty and drudgery of many of London’s lower classes portrayed vividly. Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West - Gregory Maguire Written in 1995, Maguire’s novel is set in the land of Oz, way before Dorothy and Toto follow the yellow brick road. Elphaba is a girl who was born green, with sharp teeth and a disagreeable temperament. In Maguire’s vision, Oz is imaginatively recreated, with all its Technicolor splendour practically seeping from the page. But there are sinister goings on, adult themes and a not-so-happy-ending .The young Elphaba soon learns that it’s really not easy being green.

This year Colchester Zoo celebrates its 50th birthday with a Wild in Art project called Stand Tall for Giraffes. For 12 weeks starting from the 2nd June, Colchester’s streets, parks and open spaces will be home to 2.5 metre high Giraffe sculptures, each sponsored by local businesses and uniquely painted by local artists. The project is being developed in partnership with Wild in Art, an experienced arts, events and education company who are the team behind successfully staged similar events in the UK, Europe and Africa. Over 80 schools are participating in the Stand Tall Education programme where they have had the opportunity to design their own 1.3m Giraffe and use the Stand Tall education pack as a cross curricular resource to bring
Giraffe Carers Needed!
Giraffes, the environment and conservation, into all primary topics and thematic weeks. These mini giraffes will feature in internal locations at the same time as their larger counterparts and also form part of the fun 12 week trail. At the end of the project, each Giraffe will be returned to its school as a permanent memento of their involvement in the event. The giraffes will be seen throughout Colchester and its surrounding areas from 2nd June followed by a farewell tour back to the zoo on the 26th August. The auction will take place at firstsite in Colchester on 19th September. Anthony Tropeano, Director of Colchester Zoo says,“We are thrilled to be launching this exciting event at Colchester Zoo. Stand Tall for Giraffes is

not only a fantastic spectacle for the people of Colchester, it is an excellent way to raise vital funds for the conservation work carried out by our charity Action for the Wild, and what better way to celebrate our 50th birthday! This is our gift to the people of Colchester and the surrounding area for their support over the years.
Do you think that you could offer suitable care to a 2½ metre tall giraffe sculpture, as it visits the town centre over the summer? Could you help to direct people to other giraffes in the Stand Tall herd at weekends? We are looking for adult Volunteers who can visit the sculptures, and keep them company for a four-hour slot (or more!) at weekends between 2nd June and 26th August. This will involve acting as human signposts, answering tourists’ questions. Please e-mail Clive at volunteer@colchesterzoo.org with the subject ‘Stand Tall Facebook’ if interested in finding out more. 12 Please mention The Connection when responding to adverts
A tall order for a local artist! Helen Smith is a freelance artist based in West Bergholt who saw the Stand Tall campaign advertised and submitted her design idea. Helen explains, ’My designs quite often feature on greetings cards and cross stitch kits, so the idea of painting a large giraffe was something completely different for me and I thought it would be a bit of a challenge’. Helen was delighted to hear that Marks and Spencer’s picked her design for sponsorship out of the many entries. Her eyecatching giraffe is covered in a hand painted patchwork of different motifs based on African textile patterns which took her 2 weeks to complete. Helen says ‘I wanted to include African designs and I’m also interested in needlework so my idea combines both these elements.’ The needlework references are evident in lovely quirky touches like the stitching around the eyes and needles and pins on the legs of the giraffe. You can see Helen’s design in Marks and Spencer’s from June to August before all the giraffes go off on tour prior to being sold at auction to raise more funds for Action for the Wild. More examples of Helen’s work can be found on her facebook page www.facebook.com/ HLSIllustration or www.helen-l-smith.co.uk

This month’s walk from Derek Keeble is 3.5 miles long and should take around 1 hour 40 minutes to complete. The walk takes you on a circular route around the village of Fordham. Fordham Hall estate and the land which almost surrounds the village of Fordham is now the site of a 500 acre woodland creation scheme. The Woodland Trust acquired the land in 2002 with the idea to establish native woodland interspersed with grassland. Volunteers came forward to help plant the trees. The paths through the woods are now well used by walkers, who sometimes report seeing otters on the banks of the River Colne. It is also home to wildlife, particularly birds and bats. You can begin and end this walk either at the Quilter Green car park or at the village pub The Three Horseshoes. The name is of course due to the close proximity of a blacksmith in days gone by. And in case you’re wondering why three horseshoes and not four? The answer comes from local historian Jess Jephcott: because the horse would stand on three when he was being shod! Full details and a map of the walk may be downloaded from the Connection website: http://theconnectionmagazine.co.uk/category/ magazine-features/walks/

Sage and Pancetta Roast Chicken Serves 4
Ready in 2 hours 30 minutes Give classic roast chicken a tasty makeover with a handful of fresh sage and some delicious smoky flavoured Italian bacon called pancetta. Serve with roasted baby new potatoes and lightly steamed vegetables for a wonderful summer Sunday lunch.
Ingredients:
• 1.3kg oven-ready chicken (preferably free range) • 55g butter, softened • Few fresh sage leaves • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped • 85g smoked pancetta slices • 115g fresh white breadcrumbs • 1 medium egg, beaten • Fresh sage leaves, to garnish
Tip: To make light gravy to serve with the roast chicken, drain off any excess fat from the roasting tin then heat the pan juices until sizzling. Add a splash of dry white wine or sherry then stir in a little plain flour and 1 tsp wholegrain mustard. Cook for 1 minute then gradually pour in 400ml hot chicken or vegetable stock and slowly bring to the boil, stirring all the time. Simmer for 3-4 minutes until just thickened. Season to taste with freshly ground black pepper.
22
Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas Mark 5. Place the chicken in a foil-lined roasting tin. Smear half the softened butter over the chicken breast, legs and wings and scatter over the sage leaves. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover the chicken loosely with foil and roast in the preheated oven for 1 hour 10 minutes. Uncover and baste the chicken with any juices twice during cooking. Meanwhile, melt the rest of the butter in a frying pan, add the chopped onion and fry gently for 5 minutes. Chop half the pancetta and add to the pan, frying for a further 5 minutes until the onion is softened and golden. Remove from the heat. Finely chop the rest of the sage and add to the pan with the breadcrumbs and seasoning. Leave to cool then stir in the beaten egg. Press the stuffing mixture into a greased 18cm round shallow cake tin. Uncover the chicken and top with the rest of the pancetta slices. Return to the oven and roast, uncovered, for a further 25-35 minutes until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through – the juices should run clear with no sign of pinkness when the thickest part of the thigh is pierced. Cook the stuffing in the oven at the same time until set and pale golden. Remove the chicken from the oven, cover and leave to rest for 10-15 minutes. Cut the stuffing into wedges and serve on a platter with the roast chicken, garnished with the fresh sage leaves.

Country Mutters
Cross examinations...........by Lady Muck
Oh lovely. It’s exam time again. That means weeks of tears before bedtime, arguments over why don’t they do Maths like they used to in my day and re-enactments of the McCarthy witch trials on the question of ‘Who stole my lucky pen?’ Any move to gently nudge the younger members of the household towards their bedrooms where they might like to do some revision instead of moaning about it at great length brings on a protracted rant about how you don’t understand what kind of stress they’re under and watching tele all evening is their only way to unwind and if you really want them to do well you’d be better to just get off their case, OK? So you spend weeks tiptoeing around any delicate subject likely to upset, which turns out to be every subject there is. Everything you try and do to help is wrong and you should know by now that teenager’s brains are better able to multi-task than adults so it’s perfectly reasonable to assume they’re working hard while playing music and checking out youtube, facebook and Twitter. Teenager’s body clocks are also different and require staying up until 2.00am and sleeping in until lunchtime. Don’t try suggesting that if they really need 11 hours of sleep a night maybe they should go to bed at 10.00pm because that’s different, it doesn’t work like that and if you weren’t so old you would understand.
28
Apparently the school has suggested that students should have a ready supply of their favourite food to keep their strength up as they undergo the rigours of revision. Oh yes? The likelihood of me stocking the freezer full of sirloin steak, sea bass and lobster is pretty slim I’m afraid. Chips and coke I can do, but that doesn’t strike me as very good brain food. Not to mention that the whole exam focus has the effect of bringing on those horrible nightmares of your own - the ones where you pick up the exam paper and realise that you appear to have forgotten to take that particular course for the whole of the previous year and you’re unable to answer a single question. I did actually have that experience once - you wouldn’t have thought I’d be so surprised about it when I sat down for the exam. I wonder why my mother hadn’t brought the subject up at all. I don’t recall any questions as to why I didn’t seem to be doing any work. But parents were different then. They didn’t get involved like we do now. There was no special food, no special treatment. If you tried a tantrum you’d simply be packed off for the weekend to go and stay with Grandma. They didn’t fret over league tables and results. They didn’t have to get their heads around the process of erosion, irregular verbs or questions that begin with ‘If a man...’ Never mind. It’ll all be worth it when my offspring qualify as barristers and they’re able to pay for my care in the finest local authority retirement home that money can buy. Sounds very restful actually - can’t wait.

Finance The Longest Holiday By Arwyn Bailey Most of us shy away from considering our later years and what they might bring. There may be the joy of watching our family grow and develop with grandchildren, great nephews and nieces, but understandably we do not like the idea of becoming incapacitated. However, we should start thinking about what can be termed as the “longest holiday” of our lives sooner rather than later, as it is now clear that the government will not be funding the ongoing costs of any care that might be required. The reason for the government’s stance becomes clear when examining some of the facts. According to statistics from the Office for National Statistics, the average percentage of people over 65 in 1992 was 15.8%. By the year 2033, estimates show that this figure will have increased to 22.9%. As the state is not going to assist in any meaningful form regarding ongoing care needs, we need to consider the cost of buying care as this is also rising. For example, maintaining professional quality care in one’s own home is now running at around £13.68 per hour. Furthermore, full time fees in a care home now average at just over £27,000 a year rising to over £38,000 for nursing home fees.

Here are some tips that will enable you to start planning for the future. 1. Check your pensions, ensuring that you have current information for all of them. 2. If you have not done so already, you should complete a BR19 form and send it off for a State Pension assessment. The reason for this, particularly for women, is that it will be assumed that your NI contributions would have continued if you had not stopped work in order to care for your children. However, the benefits agencies will not know of this and your past situation unless you inform them. Taking this action will enhance your state pension benefits. 3. Realistically consider what your ISAs and other savings might be worth. Monitor your investments regularly with a professional adviser. 4. Think about when your mortgage will be repaid, along with any other commitments. Put income that you have released, when loans are repaid, towards ISAs and pensions for your future. 5. Start thinking of your house as a commodity that might have to be used to fund care needs in the future. 6. Consider a special form of trust to ring fence the equity
of your house. This can protect your home from local authority means testing when you qualify for care. 7. Review your Wills and the position regarding inheritance tax. 8. Review whether your property is owned as Tenants In Common or under Joint Tenancy as this is important in this arena of planning (Scottish law varies in this regard). 9. Seek independent financial advice from an appropriately qualified professional, and appoint an adviser on a fee basis to advise you. The facts before us may not be favourable and planning for our longest holiday may take many years to achieve. Although our finances might be under pressure at this time, doing something now is going to be better than doing nothing.

A Vintage Year Vintage used to be a word associated with cars and wine, but more recently a brand new industry has been created to satisfy the hunger of consumers eager to buy vintage fashion, homewares and accessories. Suddenly it seems that we are desperate to buy into an idealised version of the past. Lucy Craymer and Janine Rudkins organise The Secret Vintage Fair, which is attracting a huge amount of interest. The last event at Colchester Castle had 70 stallholders taking part and was attended by more than 2,000 people. Lucy acknowledges that while we might have a romantic image of the 50’s when men were men and women stood around drinking tea in nice frocks under festoons of bunting, real life was hard. But perhaps that’s the reason why we’re looking back. Once again people don’t have much surplus cash, so we’re looking for bargains, for things that won’t fall apart 2 weeks after we’ve bought them and most of all we’re revisiting the idea of ‘make do and mend’, which itself has been reinvented as ‘upcycling’.
publicity. Lucy puts a lot of thought into creating a special atmosphere at the fairs with period style live music - her last event included a post war style girls harmony group and a flash mob who appeared singing from different corners of the venue. Visitors to the fairs will also be supporting local charities - the Colchester Castle event which saw people queuing out of the door raised £1,200 for Headway Essex. Lucy and Janine have an impressive following on Facebook and Twitter and their audience is still growing. But the real buzz surrounds the next event on Saturday 29th June. Where? That’s the secret... To be amongst the first to know about the next location, you can sign up to the mailing list at info@secretvintagefair.com or follow The Secret Vintage Fair on Facebook and Twitter. Photography by Hugo’ https://www.facebook. com/photosbyhugo Words by Amanda Findley
Lucy is clear why The Secret Vintage Fair is so popular. She says,‘People like to buy something well made and special - something which is unique and quite often locally made unlike the mainstream products you find on the supermarket shelves.’ This thought certainly ties in with the resurgence of traditional crafts and domestic arts seen in the bookshop and on television. There’s definitely a movement away from the mass-produced to the handmade. And that extends to how we look. Lucy says,‘A lot of people buy vintage clothing because it’s better quality than cheap high street fashion and you can create your own unique style’. The idea of introducing ‘the secret’ where the location of the fair is not revealed until a few days before creates a sense of expectation and excitement and cleverly generates it’s own

Lemon curd and blackcurrant cake
Pick Your Own Following another tricky start to the growing year with a late Spring, crops are slowly beginning to take off now, so by the middle of June we should find lots of lovely produce just ripe for the picking.
McLauchlans of Boxted will have strawber-
ries, gooseberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants and broad beans ready for picking from mid June to July. If you get stuck for ideas of what to do with your produce, they also have an excellent web site with lots of mouth-watering recipes, many of them sourced from customers or local restaurants. The farm shop also sells ready picked and frozen fruit, local potatoes and the all-important cream for your strawberries. McLauchlans of Boxted, Boxted Straight Rd, Colchester CO4 5RB. Opening hours 9.00am 6.00pm. Tel 01206 272275 or visit http://www. boxtedberries.com
Wash Farm in Sible Hedingham will
also have strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and blackcurrants. The farm is part of an environmentally sensitive scheme called the Countryside Stewardship Scheme which encourages farming methods to protect wildlife. The scheme has allowed the farm to introduce sheep to graze on meadows by the banks of the River Colne and run a traditional Spring lambing system. You can buy whole or half lamb from the farm. Wash Farm, Queen St, Sible Hedingham, Halstead CO9 3RH. Opening hours 10.00am - 6.00pm weekdays, 9.00am - 6.00pm Saturdays and 9.00am - 5.00pm Sundays. Tel 01787 461208, email info@washfarm.co.uk or visit http://www.washfarm.co.uk/ If you need any more inspiration to go out fruit picking, here’s a gorgeous recipe to try.
175g softened butter 100g Greek yogurt 2 tbsp good quality lemon curd 3 eggs zest of 1 lemon 200g self-raising flour 175g golden caster sugar 170g blackcurrants 3 tbsp icing sugar juice of 1 lemon Preheat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas mark 3. Grease or line a 2lb/4kg loaf tin with baking parchment. Put the yogurt, lemon curd, softened butter, eggs, lemon zest, flour and caster sugar into a large mixing bowl. Quickly mix with an electric whisk until the batter just comes together. Pour half of the mixture into the prepared tin, then scatter half the blackcurrants on top. Pour the rest of the batter into the tin, then scatter the remaining blackcurrants on top. Bake for at least 1 hr 15 mins until golden, and a skewer poked into the centre comes out clean. Whilst cooking, mix together a drizzle of the lemon juice and icing sugar. Remove the cake from the oven, pour the lemon drizzle over and leave to cool in the tin. Carefully lift onto a serving plate once cooled and serve with more greek yoghurt, lemon curd, or just by itself. This recipe is from http://www.boxtedberries. com and was adapted from the original on BBC Good Food by Sarah Wedderburn Catering. Sarah offers bespoke catering for events and can be contacted on sjwedderburn@ hotmail.co.uk or 07711 286432.

Chenerys Chimneys
sure clean chimney sweeping since 1976 DID YOU KNOW A SPIDER WEB COULD BE FATAL!
All chimneys need to be swept at least once a year to prevent you having a chimney fire. Something as small as a spider web or some rubble could block a chimney and reduce the flow of air, possibly causing carbon monoxide to enter your home.
HOW LONG IS IT SINCE YOUR CHIMNEY WAS SWEPT?
Chenerys Chimneys offers a clean, reliable service at competitive rates. Call now to book your sweep.
