ANNUAL REPORT

2014 The Library FOUNDATION’s PURPOSE The purpose of The Library Foundation is to ensure the future of the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library as an indispensable community resource. We do this by helping secure financial resources to support collections, programs, services, technology and physical facilities of the library. The Library Foundation pursues this purpose by seeking philanthropic support, providing conscientious stewardship of the assets in its care, encouraging appropriate community partnerships and advocating on behalf of the library’s mission. The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library is the sole beneficiary of funds raised by The Library Foundation.

Your Support Makes a Difference We know that our library is so much more than books. Because of tax dollars, our library is in good financial condition and for that we are grateful. Because of you, and so many supporters of our foundation, we are able to provide additional funds to not only make our library a good library, but to make it one of the best in the world. Thanks to The Library Foundation donors, the library was able to purchase a new bookmobile which is one of the most popular methods of delivering library materials and services to the public. We provided kindergarteners their own special book and library card, and funded new exhibits at the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery to inspire, teach and entertain us. Funds were given to restore the stained glass windows from the original 1883 Library and to purchase wellcrafted benches in the media area. In addition, five percent of our investments are given annually to strengthen and supplement the programs and services of the library. We have had a great year. Our donations through the direct mail appeal more than doubled what was raised in the prior year. We received several estate gifts. Leaving an estate gift or making annual gifts helps ensure our library will continue to thrive for generations to come. We installed a new donor recognition wall in the library rotunda and plan to find new ways to recognize our future donors. We want you to be a part of the many wonderful things that are happening at our library. Just like the anticipation we enjoyed with the arrival of the Sherlock bookmobile in 2014, 2015 marks the arrival of a second bookmobile, both made possible with your support. Please join those of us who are listed in this annual report in contributing to an invaluable community resource, our public library. The library is here for all of us, whenever we need it. We are grateful for your support and eager to hear what a difference our support makes to the services and programs of our awesome library.

The Sherlock Bookmobile July 16, 2014 was an exhilarating day for the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. Driving up to the front door of the library was the brand new “Sherlock” bookmobile which was replacing a 21-year-old vehicle of the library. The Library Foundation’s work with Capitol Federal® Foundation created a literacy partnership that is being enjoyed all over Shawnee County. Their $200,000 gift enabled the library to purchase this new vehicle. Bookmobiles have been an important part of the library since the first wheels rolled out of the parking lot on March 15, 1943. In 2014, bookmobiles saw 288,187 items checked out. The new bookmobile wrap depicts scenes from a classic series, the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Holmes stands almost 8 feet tall. The wrap was designed by the library and Capitol Federal staff, and captured by award-winning photographer Alistair Tutton of Kansas City, Kansas. The design is loosely based on a Conan Doyle short story “The Final Problem”. Our story is set in Topeka, so you see scenes photographed at

the Kansas Museum of History, The Charles Curtis House & Museum and the Capitol Building from the rooftop of the Docking State Office Building. Costumed actors appearing on the bus are local talent from Topeka Civic Theater & Academy. The actors are Jeremy Barclay as Sherlock Holmes, Bill Gloy as Dr. Watson and Marc Rapp as Professor Moriarty. “We realize how important it is to provide an extension of the library to the citizens of Topeka, especially those who are not able to visit the library on a regular basis,” John B. Dicus, Capitol Federal® Chairman said that day. “The bookmobile also is a great opportunity for introducing the adventure of reading to children, for them to discover the fun of reading for a lifetime.” With a big thanks to our new literacy partner Capitol Federal® Foundation, the people of Shawnee County will enjoy this bookmobile for years to come. The new bookmobile is stocked with all new books, DVDs, magazines and CDs with the financial support of the Friends of the Library.

New Books, Movies & Music area If you visited the New Books, Movies & Music area of the library recently, you may have wanted to sit a spell while browsing this large collection. Thanks to retired Chief Justice Kay McFarland, two handcrafted benches have been donated through a gift to The Library Foundation to provide comfort and convenience to users of this well-loved area. They are located close to the audio books, a favorite area for the Justice. While browsing, be sure and enjoy the stained glass windows that have been restored from their original home in the Topeka Public Library, 1883-1961. Returning the six windows to the library has been an ongoing project of Dr. Walt Menninger and his late wife Connie. The Menningers’ have been financially supporting the restoration of six windows: Art, History, Science, Reading Maketh a Full Man, Writing An Exact Man, and Conference A Ready Man. The History window was restored this year and hangs in the northwest window of the New Books, Movies & Music room. We say thanks to Dr. Walter Menninger and to Chief Justice Kay McFarland for their generous gifts that will be enjoyed by library patrons.

Donor Panels When the renovation and expansion of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library was under construction (19962002), design architect Michael Graves collaborated with the late Connie Menninger, a Library Foundation trustee, on plans to recognize donors who made gifts of $1,000 or more to The Library Foundation. An individual leaf became the identifier of each donor and was mounted in the niches of the signature Graves designed atrium at the center of the library. The campaign of “A Library to Remember” was launched to fill the nooks, and was known as “Leaves in the Atrium.” In 2013, another renovation project, the installation of learning-scape sculptures in the Kids Library, required a change in location of the donor recognition. Today, the leaves of donors who made gifts of $1,000 or more to The Library Foundation between 2001-2013 have been incorporated into two beautiful backlit displays located in the Robert M. & Hazel F. Lingo rotunda. Contributions are an essential source for the library’s growth, and they strengthen our ability to make a positive, significant impression in our community. It is important we take time to say thanks to all those who made gifts and to recognize those contributors. The new space is ideally located at the front of the library and provides greater visibility to those who support the library. Plans are underway for a new donor recognition program that will include donors of the past as well as those who are currently making donations. Please contact us to find out more about Named Giving opportunities. Just as a tree requires a continuing source of sustenance to grow, so does the library. ~ Michael Graves

Kindergarteners Get First Library Cards Through a new initiative, IREAD, Lowman Hill’s kindergartners received a graduation gift that will serve them well throughout life, their first library card! Specially designed library cards were handed out to the students to encourage a love of reading. This initiative was supported by the Robert C. and Dorothy L. Harder Book Fund. For years, the Harder’s gave books to Lowman Hill students during the holidays, and Bob volunteered there as a reader. To celebrate this milestone, the children received a book, a library logoed cardholder and their very own library card. Kindergarten students are at a point where they are reading independently, and this program encourages them to keep reading and to grow into lifelong readers.

Children’s lives are shaped by the support they receive along the way. The vision of our donors is to lay the foundation for children to grow into lifelong readers. The library plans to expand IREAD to other schools in the USD 501 school district. If you are interested in sponsoring a program for a kindergarten class contact The Library Foundation office.

ESTATE GIFTS Honoring those who remembered The Library Foundation. Martha W. Carithers Dorothy L. Diehl Mary C. Gordy WILDER SOCIETY Early benefactors, Edward and Mary Wilder, helped raise funds to build the first permanent library in Topeka. Their memorial gifts to the library created the first public art collection in the city. In 1998, The Library Foundation created the Edward and Mary Wilder Society. We give special thanks to those who are securing the future of our awesome library by including The Library Foundation in your estate plans or making an annual lifetime gift. Dick and Donna Crawford Annual Scholarship In 2001, Dick and Donna Crawford made a $20,000 pledge to The Library Foundation to create an endowment providing annual scholarships for library employees. Their desire was to support library employees who exemplified the library’s high standards of public service. The Crawford scholarship has been awarded annually since it was established. In 2014, the $1,000 scholarship was given to Natalie Moreland. Natalie is a Kids Library specialist and is pursuing her Master of Arts in Library & Information Science at the University of Missouri. Natalie attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of

Music in Bassoon Performance and a Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education. After teaching elementary and middle school reading for several years, she began working in the Kids Library, where she delights in spreading “bookjoy” to children of all ages. Other areas of professional interest include improving library and information access to underserved populations and using outdoor spaces to promote active lifestyles and environmental literacy. For Natalie, scholarships like this one make the difference between dreams and reality when it comes to pursuing a Master’s degree. She took classes on technology and collection development, greatly increasing her skills as a library blogger, as well as learning more about how to maintain balanced, useful collections that meet the needs of the community.
