2015 ANNUAL REPORT THE LIBRARY FOUNDATION’S PURPOSE The purpose of The Library Foundation is to ensure the future of the library as an indispensable community resource. We do this by helping secure financial resources to support collections, programs, services, technology and physical facilities of the library. The Library Foundation pursues this purpose by seeking philanthropic support, providing conscientious stewardship of the assets in its care, encouraging appropriate community partnerships and advocating on behalf of the library’s mission and continue helping our community be the best place to live, work, learn and play. The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library is the sole beneficiary of funds raised by The Library Foundation.
THE LIBRARY FOUNDATION | 1515 SW 10TH AVENUE | TOPEKA, KS 66604-1374 | 785 580-4498 | FOUNDATION.TSCPL.ORG
DEAR FRIENDS, We are pleased to share with you The Library Foundation’s 2015 Annual Report. Our complete financial statements can be found on our website, foundation.tscpl.org. This has been an eventful year for The Foundation. We are deeply proud of the support that all of our donors have made to help fulfil the library’s mission: Your place. Stories you want. Information you need. Connections you seek. In 2015, the library purchased the newest bookmobile “Alice”, restored the remaining stained glass window, completed the History Neighborhood and recovered Melissa’s blue chair in the Kids Library. The library also purchased a new microfilm reader scanner for the Dr. Phillip and Betty Baker Genealogy Center in the Topeka Room, installed a new plaque at the entrance to the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery, continued providing the program Music on a Sunday Afternoon, and delivered so many more services and programs with gifts to The Library Foundation by you, the donor. A tree was planted on the library grounds in memory of Dr. Robert Harder who served as a library trustee from 2009 to 2014. It was Bob Harder’s memorial funds that helped start the Harder IREAD Kindergarten program and will continue to be named for him as we expand the program with donor support to more schools in Shawnee County. We acknowledge Foundation board member Dr. Bob Parman for his exceptional service to the Foundation and the library. Bob’s leadership and advocacy on behalf of children is remarkable. As his term ends we welcome Brenda Dietrich. Brenda is the recently retired Auburn-Washburn school superintendent and is passionately involved in the community. Our challenge for 2016 and beyond is to fund the early childhood literacy programs of the library as it strives to accomplish the community goal: every child in our community will be ready for kindergarten. We are pleased to join with the United Way of Greater Topeka in concentrating our efforts on building sustainable funding for a new program, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. We are grateful for your investment in the library which creates opportunities for a lifetime of literacy and learning. Thank you! As we look to 2017 we will be celebrating The Library Foundation’s 35th anniversary. It will be a time for us to see what impact we have made and what future progress is needed.

SABATINI FOUNDATION RECOGNIZED
M
any people come to the library to enjoy the newest exhibit at the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery. In February 2015, a new plaque was installed at the entrance to the gallery to honor the woman for which the gallery is named. Visitors are welcomed with Alice Sabatini’s drawings as a way to commemorate her life and work. The picture (right) shows Frank Sabatini unveiling the new plaque with his son, Dan. Alice was a beloved educator, artist, designer, illustrator, philanthropist and children’s advocate. Over many years, Alice worked closely with Gary Clarke when he was the director of the World Famous Topeka Zoo. Alice drew the zoo’s animals and the new gallery plaque includes changeable bronze relief plates with six of Alice’s animal drawings. The plates change periodically. Visitors can make rubbings of the drawings to take home. On October 9, Topeka celebrated 2015 Philanthropy Day by honoring the Sabatini Family Foundation for Outstanding Foundation. Pictured is Frank & Judith Sabatini, Matt Sabatini and Dan Sabatini with their award. The Sabatini Family Foundation was nominated by The Library Foundation for its continued support of the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery along with funding the annual art show devoted to children and an outreach enrichment program targeting at-risk children.
ALICE IS ON OUR STREETS he library’s newest bookmobile, Alice, was put in service on June 3, 2015. The purchase of this bookmobile was made by The Library Foundation as a result of a generous estate gift of the late Hugh and Margaret McCausland. Their bequeathed gift toward the purchase of Alice will leave a lasting impression on the community, helping the library continue to bring its collection across the county.
T
not a surprise to those who knew them that they would leave their estate to benefit the library through The Library Foundation. What a wonderful way to remember them. Their gift provided this brand new bookmobile to our library filled to the brim with brand new books that will serve the community for many years to come,” said Becky Holmquist at the grand opening.
Hugh and Margaret McCausland were instructors at Washburn University and upon retirement became very involved with the Friends of the Library book sale. It was
Planned giving has helped to make Alice a fixture of the community for decades to come. To find out more about how you can make a legacy gift, contact The Library Foundation. 3

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
T
he library has officially adopted the community goal: every child in our community will be ready for kindergarten. With your help The Library Foundation will make that goal a reality. Exciting things are coming for Shawnee County children, as we enhance our commitment to get kids acquainted with reading in those crucial first years. A mobile early childhood learning center will travel throughout the community, bringing an interactive play-based environment to impressionable young minds right where they live. This colorful, hands-on learning center will cultivate the most essential skills necessary for kids to be ready for school with a strong emphasis on parent engagement education. Yet to be named, the vehicle has been ordered and should arrive by fall. The Foundation is providing direct support for a large part of its cost and will also provide ongoing financial support for materials, programming, and providing professional screenings (vision, hearing, language). Funding for the Harder IREAD Kindergarten program began two years ago through Dr. Robert Harder’s memorial gifts. The program started at Lowman Hill Elementary where Dr. Harder volunteered and then expanded in 2015 to reach students at Stout, McCarter and Meadows. With
additional support, the library hopes to expand in 2016 to William’s, Scott, Ross and State Street schools. Library supporters are encouraged to adopt a kindergarten class to bring the program into their neighborhood. When children have a bounty of books, they fall in love with reading. That is one reason why the library, in partnership with the United Way of Greater Topeka, wants to bring the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to Shawnee County. The most significant factors influencing a child’s early educational success are an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school. Access to age appropriate books is the first step in growing children into lifelong readers and successful, selfsufficient adults. The Dollywood Foundation underwrites the costs of the books and a $25 annual donation to this program pays for postage so that one child can participate in this program. We are seeking partners to join us to build a sustainable program. The Read With Me program has been in place for a number of years at the library. Babies (0-18 months old) in the Read with Me program receive a t-shirt to celebrate their first library card. Parents get a booklet on how to get the most out of reading to a pre-reader. The Library Foundation will continue to fund this library program. 54

The Dick and Donna Crawford scholarship was created in 2001 with a $20,000 pledge to The Library Foundation. The Crawford’s made their gift as a way to create an endowment to provide annual scholarships for library employees. Their desire was to support library employees who exemplified the library’s high standards of public service. The Crawford scholarship has been awarded annually since it was established.
ESTATE GIFTS LEAVE A LEGACY G. Lester Jordan, Jr. earned a degree in social work from Washburn University and Masters from the University of Kansas. He enjoyed his employment as a social worker. G enjoyed traveling abroad and learning about different cultures. He frequently used the library’s travel section in planning vacations and for learning. G enjoyed bird watching, along with a love for literature, music, art and photography. He was an accomplished photographer, as he won many 1st place awards in the Topeka Capital-Journal Kodak Photography contests. In 1997 G purchased a lifetime Friends of the Library membership for his parents, G. Lester Jordan and Mary Alice Jordan. He passed away on June 25, 2015. G’s gift was not designated and will be used to support the library including the early childhood programs. Kay E. McFarland enjoyed a good mystery and liked to select her favorite audiobooks from the library. She served 35 years as a judge including justice of the Kansas Supreme Court, the first woman to hold that office. In 1995 she became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. She retired in 2009. Justice McFarland’s many interests included showing dogs, wildlife conservation, and world travel. Before her death Justice McFarland donated two handcrafted benches to The Library Foundation to provide comfort and convenience in the well-loved media area of the library. She passed away August 18, 2015 leaving a gift for the library to use for audio-reader materials. WILDER SOCIETY Early benefactors, Edward and Mary Wilder, helped raise funds to build the first permanent library in Topeka. Their memorial gifts to the library created the first public art collection in the city. In 1998, The Library Foundation created the Edward and Mary Wilder Society. We give special thanks to those who are securing the future of our awesome library by including The Library Foundation in your estate plans or making an annual lifetime gift. fter the library closed Saturday night, September 12, it was reopened to several hundred curious guests who were ready to discover the library in a new and eventful way. Library staff provided an evening of experiences as the many treasures our library has to offer were explored.
W
ith an Alice in Wonderland theme to go along with our newest bookmobile, the annual Wilder Society Tea in April was an enjoyable affair. We all know that in Alice in Wonderland, Alice sits down with the March hare and the Mad Hatter at a tea party. Everyone at our tea party had fun with their top hats, rabbit ears and crowns along with tasty food, tea and beautiful flowers.
Those experiences included: • Taking an exclusive walking tour of the stained glass windows • Joining a cast of supporters as they created “Why I love my library” videos in the screencasting room • Being delighted as they discovered the library’s best kept art treasures • Grabbing a prop and smiling in the photo booth • Seeing the latest design printing in the 3-D printer
• Being a kid again while participating in one of the kids activities • Watching the “AMH” automated book return machine as it checks in and sorts books • Exploring the latest exhibits in the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery • Sneaking a peak at the bookmobiles in the bus barn • Trying to stump our librarians at our neighborhood block party The event was co-sponsored by CoreFirst Bank & Trust and Investment Services and The Library Foundation as a way to update library supporters on what the library is doing and to create interest in new potential supporters of the library. Your library has so much to offer! If you are interested in a personal library tour, please contact us at (785) 580-4498.
The Edward and Mary Wilder Society is The Library Foundation’s planned giving or annual lifetime giving society. If you are interested in becoming a Wilder Society member or have an interest in attending our next tea on April 17, 2016, please contact The Foundation office.
