The Library Foundation helps ensure the future of the library as an indispensable community resource. We do this by helping secure funds to support collections, programs, services, technology and physical facilities of the library.

The Library Foundation pursues this purpose by seeking philanthropic support, providing conscientious stewardship of the assets in its care, encouraging appropriate community partnerships and advocating on behalf of the library’s mission.

The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library is the sole beneficiary of funds raised by The Library Foundation.

This report highlights the myriad ways you helped make your library the 2016 Library of the Year.

The library’s community impact goals are intended to facilitate big transformations through literacy and learning. The first goal, “Every child will be ready for kindergarten,” has been the focus of the library foundation’s fundraising efforts.

With the generous contributions of hundreds of donors, the foundation helped provide financial support for the Learn & Play Bus – a mobile early childhood learning vehicle.

The Learn & Play Bus is a specially designed learning center for children under age five and their adults, providing play experiences, books, games and manipulatives to help them learn and grow – because children’s play is serious learning. During each two-hour stop, children will experience the skills needed to prepare them for kindergarten.

The bus delivers library services at stops throughout Shawnee County.

As we look forward to a new year, with your help, we will continue to support the outstanding services, programs, collections and learning experiences

provided by a 21st century library.

Watch for updates as the library embarks on a 10-year building renovation and infrastructure plan to increase public space used to support learning, literacy and civic engagement.

THE GIFT OF READING

Finally, the 25-year-old AdventureMobile, which provides library services to area elementary schools, was retired from service.

The Lingo Bookmobile is operating in its stead, but by 2018, we hope to purchase a brand new vehicle.

Over the past year, in partnership with the United Way of Greater Topeka, we have been working to bring Dolly Parton Imagination Library to Shawnee County.

With Imagination Library, every participating child under age five will be mailed an ageappropriate book each month.

That will give kids a home library of up to 60 books.

Imagination Library instills a love of books and reading from an early age. Studies show that participation in the program positively and significantly improves early childhood literacy.

The cost per child is just $25 a year to cover the cost of postage. We want to serve all 12,519 Shawnee County children under age five. Our goal is to raise $1 million so we can provide a sustainable program to help ensure a brighter future for children. To date, we have collected more than $300,000 towards that goal. DICK AND DONNA CRAWFORD SCHOLARSHIP In 2001, library supporters Dick and Donna Crawford made a $20,000 pledge to create an endowment providing annual scholarship for library employees.

Their desire was to support library employees who exemplified the library’s high standards of public service. A $1,000 scholarship has been awarded annually since it was established.

In 2016, the scholarship was awarded to public services specialist, Miranda Erickson. She is pursuing her Master of Library Science from Emporia State.

Miranda works with library programs supporting and engaging writers in our community, including the Local Writers Workshop, Great Writers Right Here author fair and Community Novel Project.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals Topeka Chapter recognized Dr. Bob Parman as Outstanding Volunteer Philanthropist in November 2016. The Library Foundation nominated him for his advocacy for improved services to children and families.

As a retired pediatrician, Bob began his six years of service on the foundation board as a highly respected advocate for children and families. He is a constant supporter of children’s literacy and that has not been more evident than with his activism and promotion for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and the Learn & Play Bus.

Several years ago, Bob and his wife, Frankie (pictured with their family), provided the funds for a bronze sculpture and bench to honor the R.E.A.D® Dog Program. R.E.A.D® dogs come to the library on Sundays to help children with their reading skills.

ESTATE GIFTS LEAVE A LEGACY G. Lester Jordan, Jr. If you enjoy someone with a wry sense of humor then you appreciated G. Jordan. Librarian Valerie Reif had firsthand knowledge. Valerie shared: “Consider his email moniker— oxford shirt — unique, descriptive, and self-reflective! I never saw him wear any shirt other than his crisp oxford button-downs. In person, he was anything but buttoned-down! He was clever and funny and generous, and very intelligent.”

Valerie said he always remembered her at Christmas time. She has one of his still-life photographs on her desk— he fashioned it into his last greeting card. G. Jordan passed away on June 25, 2015, leaving his estate to the library that will have a lasting impact.

Carol Jory Carol was a strong supporter of the library.

With gifts beginning in 2001, wishing to remain anonymous, Carol asked to name the teen area in the library, David J’s Place, in honor of her late son David. Carol’s commitment and vision with her extraordinary gifts honored her son’s memory in a vibrant and meaningful manner. Sherry Best, Alice C. Sabatini Gallery Collection Curator, expressed that “Carol was always excited and interested in talking about art. She had so much kindness and insight.”

Carol operated the Mulvane family’s farm near Rossville and was involved in many community activities. She served on numerous boards including the Topeka and Rossville public libraries. Carol contributed to many groups for historic preservation, conservation, the visual, musical and performing arts, animal welfare and the senior center.

Carol passed away on March 31, 2016, leaving an estate gift, which through her generosity will leave a positive mark on our library.

Early benefactors, Edward and Mary Wilder, helped raise funds to build the first permanent library in Topeka. Their memorial gifts to the library created the first public art collection in the city. In 1998, The Library Foundation created the Edward and Mary Wilder Society.
