2019 Annual Report The purpose of The Library Foundation is to ensure the future of the library as an indispensable community resource. We do this by helping secure financial resources to support collections, programs, services, technology and physical facilities of the library. The Library Foundation pursues this purpose by seeking philanthropic support, providing conscientious stewardship of the assets in its care, encouraging appropriate community partnerships and advocating on behalf of the library’s mission and continue helping our community be the best place to live, work, learn and play. The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library is the sole beneficiary of funds raised by The Library Foundation.

Dear Friends, Donors of our library are incredible! You love your library and understand the impact it makes on our community. We are grateful for your support. The Library Foundation is pleased to report that 2019 was a record year for the foundation to provide financial support to the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. Throughout the year the foundation through generous gifts from library donors paid more than $1.3 million to the library for a variety of programs and services. The overview of those programs and services is illustrated on pages 4 and 5 of this report. One of the highlights for the year was the ribbon-cutting of Claire’s Courtyard along with the unveiling of the bricks in the courtyard’s amphitheater. We were pleased when so many purchased a brick engraved with a saying or a name in memory of or to honor someone. Claire’s Courtyard was built to provide an expansion of the café and an outdoor classroom. During the ribbon-cutting we emphasized that the donors of Claire’s Courtyard, Glenn and Claire Swogger, were philanthropists, community leaders and to quote Glenn, “lovers of life!” It was the Swoggers who first named the Millennium Café in 2000 and had the vision of what this expansion could mean for the library and our community. Because of Glenn and Claire we can provide better experiences at our library with Claire’s Courtyard. Thank you, Glenn! Another highlight was the arrival of the Adventuremobile. This new vehicle travels to 20 elementary schools during the school year and through-out the community in the summer inspiring curiosity in children through reading. It was made possible by a major gift from the Security Benefit Charitable Trust and makes them one of our Literacy Partners. We hope you enjoy reading this report and will continue your support of The Library Foundation. Be sure to stop by the Lingo Rotunda in the library to see the new digital donor recognition wall. Together we invested in our library and have made a remarkable difference for our community. We don’t know what the future needs of the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library will be, but we do know we will need you to help fulfill those needs. Thank you!
Marilyn Ward, Chair
Nancy Lindberg, Executive Director
FROM NANCY LINDBERG On a personal note, I became executive director of The Library Foundation in January 2014. I plan to retire in April 2020. I have been fortunate to have kind and generous library donors and strong and talented foundation leaders. I have felt privileged to be part of the library’s staff and management team. I know the foundation will continue to thrive under new leadership and wish you well. See you at the library!
Early benefactors, Edward and Mary Wilder, helped raise funds to build the first permanent library in Topeka. Their memorial gifts to the library created the first public art collection in the city. In 1998, The Library Foundation created the Edward and Mary Wilder Society. We give special thanks to those who are securing the future of our awesome library by including The Library Foundation in your estate plans or making an annual lifetime gift. CHARTER MEMBERS

The Jerry and Judy Reed Studio, named after Jerry and his late wife Judy, will focus on multi-day projects and artists-in-residence opportunities where local artists can demonstrate their craft and teach classes. The Reed Studio is currently under construction along with major renovations to the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery. The Sabatini Family Foundation and a National Endowment for Humanities grant are also helping to finance the renovations. The gallery will open April 2020.
DICK AND DONNA CRAWFORD
A N N UA L S C H O L A R S H I P
A $1,000 Dick and Donna Crawford scholarship was given to library employee Darci Scott. Darci is the Accounting Supervisor in Administration and used her scholarship to purchase a payroll study course from the American Payroll Association. Darci has worked nine years at the library and was recently promoted to Accounting Supervisor. With this position, she is being introduced to the management side of the library. The scholarship was created in 2001 by a gift from Dick and Donna Crawford. They made their gift to create an endowment to provide annual scholarships for library employees. Their desire was to support staff who exemplified the library’s high standards of public service. The Crawford scholarship has been awarded annually since it was established.

The Library Foundation organized it’s first brick campaign to provide funds for the furnishings of Claire’s Courtyard. With a challenge of raising $50,000, the campaign was launched in April 2018 for bricks in the seating area of the amphitheater. On June 15th, we unveiled 597 engraved bricks purchased by 475 donors which raised $64,000.
Thank you for your support

SUCCESSFUL HARDER IREAD Program The Robert C. and Dorothy L. Harder IRead Initiative has been in place since 2014. In building a community of readers it serves as a touchpoint to our communities’ newest readers. In the 2018-2019 school year the library distributed celebration boxes to eight schools: Jardine, Lowman Hill, McCarter, Meadows, Randolph, Ross, State Street and Whitson Elementary. Within the 34 Kindergarten classrooms we reached 611 emerging readers. Each student received a gift that included an early reader book and a coupon for a cookie at the Millennium Café. Being new readers, we also wanted to aid them in selecting books that were just right for their individual reading level needs. We tucked a message in their new book about the five finger rule for helping them find “just right” books for their reading level. Teachers shared that it was nice to take a little time to celebrate a classroom of new readers who were excited about their books.

LOVE OF READING THROUGH
D O L LY P A R T O N ’ S IMAGINATION LIBRARY
Realizing the importance of every child being ready for kindergarten, the Kansas Health Foundation presented a check for $228,000 on July 10th to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library and its partner, United Way of Greater Topeka. The symbolic check represented a three-year grant to help register more children in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Pictured are: Gina Millsap, Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library CEO; Kristi Zuckovich, Kansas Health Foundation VP for Communications and Policy; and Jessica Lehnherr, United Way of Greater Topeka CEO. At the end of 2019 there were registered in Shawnee County 5,481 children or 49.8% of the 11,005 children eligible for the program. 61,250 books were delivered throughout the year. We thank the many library donors who have given a gift to support the first two years of the Imagination Library! You made it possible to bring this amazing program to the children of Shawnee County. • Building culture of literacy and love of reading across the community • Helping kids be prepared to thrive in kindergarten • Bringing all kids together under an umbrella of a shared reading experience. Since Imagination Library began in 2017 we have spent $265,635 to purchase the books and pay the postage for the books to be delivered into the homes of every eager preschooler.
