Dear Friends, We live in a generous community. When 2020 began, no one could have foreseen the challenges that a pandemic like COVID-19 would bring to our organization and to the world. From closures to re-openings, we saw tremendous innovations, collaborative thinking and much cherished community support for local businesses. We also saw change within our organization. Upon Nancy Lindberg’s retirement in July, Erin Aldridge was named as the new Executive Director of the Foundation. Then in December we saw CEO Gina Millsap take a well-deserved retirement. Most of these changes were seen through a camera lens as we all coped with not being able to meet in person. Through it all, supporters of the Library Foundation made financial contributions ensuring the future of the programs and services that the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library provides in our area. Thank you for continuing to support these vital services to our community. Thank you for continuing to support innovation and exploration. D I C K A N D D O N N A C R AW FO R D AWA R D S C H O L A R S H I P In 2020, Areli Bermudez-Villarreal was awarded the Dick and Donna Crawford Scholarship. Areli is currently pursing her Masters of Library Science at Emporia State University. She plans to utilize her degree in her role as a Public Services Specialist with the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. The Dick and Donna Crawford Scholarship Fund was created in the early 2000s with a donation of $25,000 to honor Library employees who exemplify the Library’s high standards of public service. These scholarships enable Library employees to pursue continuing education and training opportunities that benefit the Library’s service to the community.
“The 2020 Crawford Scholarship has helped me work toward my goal of becoming a librarian by taking some of the financial burden off my plate and relieving a great deal of that anxiety. I needed all my energy to focus on my classes while also working full time and taking care of my family. Among other practical lessons this school year, my timemanagement skills were honed while studying for Research in Library and Information Science, but I particularly value the leadership opportunities I was given in my Project Management class. As much as I appreciate the financial support this scholarship gave me, more importantly, it expressed your faith in my abilities, and that boost of confidence is immeasurable -

REED STUDIO In July 2020, the Jerry and Judy Reed Studio was opened in the Alice C. Sabatini Art Gallery. It was made possible by the donations of the Reed family. This space will be used for visiting artists, clinics and work shops.
