AWESOME A NEW WAY TO CHECK-OUT
he library will be closed May 1-5 and will reopen May 6 with a new way to check out. What does that mean for you? Shorter, or even eliminated, wait times when checking out and more check-out kiosks conveniently located throughout the library. The library is adopting Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags as a way to check out, instead of using barcodes. RFID tags are used worldwide for a variety of purposes including employee ID badges and in K-Tags used by Turnpike motorists. With RFID tags, items will check out faster. The entire library staff will be involved in converting 450,000+ items – hence, the need to close.
You will continue to use your library card. The new system will require a PIN to check out. This is also a great opportunity to update your PIN. Instead of scanning each book, movie or other item individually, RFID enables you will place your stack on a scanner pad, and voilà, all the items are checked out at once. Occasionally your stack may need to be fanned out to make sure all the tags get read. Change happens. Rest assured, we’ll be here to help you when you need us. See the back page of this newspaper and tscpl.org for more information.
11 new Express Checks will be located throughout the library. Have your card and PIN ready.
You Make Us the Most Valued Place in Town
2013
was the year the library came to where you live, work and play. The library brought computers, printers, job training and other programs to the Shawnee County Parks and Recreation’s community centers. “It’s great to see cooperation between two family-focused entities,” one customer remarked. We’ve been creative and vigilant about providing more access to the library. Your library is open 7 days a week, 78 hours a week. Bookmobiles run six days a week, and we’re open 24/7 at tscpl.org. We even put books on the Topeka Metro buses for the first time ever! Isn’t it convenient that in this day and age you no longer have to come to the library to use it—though many people still do. Almost 800,000 people visited the library to borrow, to learn, to meet with friends, to work and to relax. The library transforms children’s lives, and our redesigned Kids Library is a testament

This new memoir by Sharron Kahn Luttrell is a natural pick for dog lovers, but it has a broad appeal. It’s a positive account of the National Education for Assistance Dog Services and the relationship between the trainer, Sharron, and an adorable yellow Labrador named Daisy. Library Programs at Your Community Center
Yeah, really.
A
bout once a week families flock to Shawnee County’s community centers for education and fun brought to you by the library. They participate in librarian-led storytimes, like Pajama Storytime and workshops, like School Readiness. The convenience of having a library program in their neighborhood really works for busy parents. Sarah Krause, assistant director at Garfield, was delighted to have an opportunity to attend a library program in her neighborhood. “As a working parent, it’s convenient to have an option in the evening to get to go to a library program,” she said. Jeremy Rathbun and his daughter Allison attended Preschool Storytime at Garfield Community Center, recently and had rave reviews of the stories and craft. “This is great. She gets to have a story read to her and opportunity for togetherness,” Rathbun said. There’s something for older kids too. Teens can learn new skills like songwriting, creating artworks and job skills. Adults can dig into their family history with genealogy programs, get crafty with knitting programs and learn computer software, such as Excel.
Look at the schedule starting on page 10. Programs at community center locations are indicated with a triangle symbol: u

The Library Foundation
Introducing Nancy Lindberg The Library Foundation’s new Executive Director is a talented development professional who has hit the ground running since the beginning of 2014. Get to know Nancy a bit better with this Q&A!
Q What do you look
forward to the most in your new position as The Library Foundation’s director?
A I have just scratched the surface of meeting all the wonderful library supporters, and I look forward to continuing that. I am also excited to attend my first Wilder Society Tea, which will be April 6. The Wilder Society is the planned giving program of The Library Foundation.
Q Where did you work before you came to The Library Foundation?
A I previously directed the philanthropy efforts of the
Kansas Masonic Foundation, leading multiple successful campaigns to fund cancer research at the University of Kansas Cancer Center, including the Foundation’s successful $15 million Partnership for Life campaign.
Q You have worked on a number of children’s issues over the years. Tell us about this work.
A Most recently I served on the Child Care Aware
(ERC) Board of Directors and was president of ERC in 2011. Prior to my work at the Kansas Masonic Foundation I served as the Executive Director of the Kansas Children’s Campaign. This campaign’s mission was to improve the lives of children and families by making children’s issues a top priority. Before that I was Assistant to Attorneys General Robert Stephan and Carla Stovall working on such programs as the Amber Alert and State Child Death Review Board. I also staffed the Sunflower Foundation when it was created. I have served as President of the Kansas-National Education Association for three terms and taught 4th grade in Lyons, Kansas.
Q What do you do when you’re not at work? A I’m very active in the community, including service
with the Topeka Chapter of Association of Fundraising Professionals as immediate past president. Until recently I served on the Kansas Advisory Group on Juvenile Justice, an appointment of Governors Mike Hayden, Bill Graves and Kathleen Sebelius. I am treasurer of my church and enjoy traveling, scrapbooking, reading, and spending time with my great-nieces and nephews.
