Announcing New bookmobile arrives this spring Lake Shawnee is setting for Alice in Wonderland
A planned gift to the Library Foundation made this bookmobile possible.
T
he vibrancy and whimsy of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland will flow through the streets of Shawnee County soon, thanks to a planned gift to the Library Foundation. The newest bookmobile in the library’s fleet is due to arrive this spring.
Alice is a physical representation of one couple’s devotion to the library. Margaret and Hugh McCausland were longtime Friends of the Library volunteers and book lovers. Their bequeathed gift toward the purchase of Alice will leave a lasting impression on the community, helping the library continue to bring its collection into the community.
Affectionately deemed “Alice,” the bookmobile features an Alice in Wonderland storyscape shot on location at Lake Shawnee by Alastair Tutton, the same photographer who captured scenes depicted on the "Sherlock" bookmobile released last year. Sherlock was funded by Literacy Partner Capitol Federal® Foundation, The Library Foundation and The Friends of the Library.
Planned giving has helped to make Alice a fixture of the community for decades to come. To find out more about planned giving, contact The Library Foundation executive director Nancy Lindberg, nlindberg@tscpl.org or 580-4493.
Abby Musick, of Topeka Civic Theatre and Academy, poses as Alice in the gloriously colorful Ted Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee, courtesy of Shawnee County Parks and Recreation.

Hooked on graphics
Need reliable health info? Lissa can help with that. estaley@tscpl.org
The perfect book does three things: 1. Engages your imagination 2. Entertains 3. Grips you all the way to the last page
W
e can all agree on those. But what’s missing? Teen and tween fans of graphic novels would insist that a great book includes art, too. Graphic novels are basically novels in comic strip format. They’re superhero tales like Batman and Wonder Woman, Japanese Manga and original fiction, biographies or memoirs. Most contain some breathtaking art and powerful storylines.
One thing they are not is “light reading.” Becca Paquette, teen librarian, says that’s a common misconception.
We have an extensive collection of graphic novels in David J.’s teen space, and acollection especially for tweens that is so awesome even the adults are reading it.
“Kids can get the same benefits reading a graphic novel that they can get from a traditional book,” says Becca. “They’re vocabulary-builders. And for reluctant readers, they can boost confidence because they go fast and they’re not intimidated by long swaths of text.”
“I’m a fan of Adventure Time,” admits Becca, referring to the graphic novel version of the Cartoon Network show beloved by kids and adults alike for its subversive humor. “Many of the graphic novels are steeped in pop culture, and that really speaks to tweens and teens,” says Becca. “Whatever gets them hooked on the written word is a good thing.”

Bikes & books G
et the wind in your hair and your legs pumping on your next trip to the library. Topeka Metro rolls out its Bikeshare program this spring. Starting April 15, the library will have its very own rack of bikeshare bikes. The library is one of six locations for the bike racks. Other locations are Visit Topeka, Inc., Washburn University, Gage Park, Lake Shawnee and the Quincy Street Station Downtown. “It’s more than a recreational piece. In the larger cities that have bikeshares, it’s for both tourists and daily commuters. We want Topekans to use it,” says Ronnie Murphy, director of marketing and communication at Topeka Metro. Riders can acquire an annual account for $25 and get two hours of daily use. The checkout system is located on the bike itself and users can unlock and ride off after entering a PIN. Topeka Metro will be launching Bikeshare April 15 with an educational fair at Washburn University followed by a group ride to the library. People will have an opportunity to sign up for a Bikeshare account at launch day activities or online at topekametrobikes.org.

Kids had an awesome year Checkout changes In May 2014, we installed a new selfcheckout system. As to be expected, the number of selfcheckouts increased by leaps and bounds. Last year, you checked out solo 888,776 times. That’s a 219% increase over 2013.
The library grew even cooler
In August, hundreds of kids roared into the library for a special visit and storytime with Daniel Tiger, from the PBS Kids and KTWU hit children’s show, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. During Summerfest, students read a total of 72,718 hours. Thousands of kids in Shawnee County entered school in the fall ready to pick up where they left off.
We added a lot of cool stuff to the library in 2014. Check it out: Cake pans, craft kits, travel and fitness bags for checkout, Sports and Divorce Neighborhoods, Monarch Waystations, independent publication of two new community novels, Make-It Lab with a 3D printer and a suite of tech tools for entrepeneurs
The library is an innovative leader
