onnie’s kids are wiggly and outspoken, but most of all, they’re ravenously curious. That’s why Brecken, 8, and Brody, 4, are perhaps the library’s biggest fans. They clamor into the Kids Library to pluck books off the shelves and eye the aquarium’s colorful inhabitants.
“The kids had a hard time understanding the concept of the 3D printer when I tried to explain it,” says Ronnie, “But when we entered the Make-It Lab, they lit up with excitement.” Brecken “drew” an owl using an iMac and Adobe Illustrator software, then printed it out in 3D.
Surprisingly, their current fascination with the library resides in a modest, quiet and otherwise unassuming alcove in the library's new books and media room. The Make-It Lab is a dynamic space full of the tools they need to make their dreams come alive.
The Make-It Lab isn’t just for toying around. Ronnie, who is the marketing director at Topeka Metro, says that he’ll utilize the Make-It Lab and its tech tools to help him develop engaging promos for the bus company.
The Make-It Lab houses iMacs loaded with design and editing software, recording and video equipment, and something else that seems incredibly magical to kids, and, heck, even to adults: the Ultimaker 3D printer.
Anything is possible with the right tools. iMacs, a scanner, keyboard, mics, cameras and design software await in the Make-It Lab for your next bright idea to be born. Information online at tscpl.org/make-it-lab.
Available for checkout at the Red Carpet desk. Search "media bag" at tscpl.org/catalog to reserve.

SEPTEMBER IS
Literacy Month P
earl had a secret. Throughout her daily life, she struggled with reading and writing. While she ran a business, she often covered up her weakness by having others help her with writing projects. Pearl babysat a 2-year-old girl and realized that, with her lack of literacy skills, she couldn’t be the role model to the growing girl that she wished she could be. She came across a brochure from the Topeka Literacy Council, and after much soul-searching, decided to get help.
Literacy Resources
After working with a tutor, Pearl’s skills improved remarkably. She’s now a Washburn student working toward a B.A. degree. She hopes to use her skills to mentor youths in the community. Literacy is a vital life skill. Children of adults who struggle with reading tend to struggle themselves. Pearl says to those who have hidden struggles with literacy, “Get over the embarrassment. You have to want it for you and the next generation. Find the courage to get help.”

ell me if this sounds familiar: I really want to try this new craft, but I don’t want to go out and buy all the tools and materials when I don’t know if I’ll really enjoy it. Great news! The library has arts & crafts kits that you can check out – so you can try it out before spending time and money gathering supplies and tools. More great news: arts & crafts kits can be reserved just like books. Search catalog.tscpl.org for “arts & crafts kit.” TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS

Each kit contains instructions, books and tools (such as knitting needles, embroidery, hoops, rubber stamps, etc.) that need to be returned with the kit. Kits also contain items such as yarn, embroidery floss and paper that library customers can use for their crafts, and these “consumable” items don’t need to be returned. We’ve got two new arts & crafts kits – Learn to Rubber Stamp and Learn Counted Cross Stitch. Check one out today and make something beautiful with your own two hands. AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2015

Topeka family celebrates 25 years of glass blowing together with an exhibit at the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery from June 29 - Aug 24.
AlBo Glass was created through the collective effort of the Sheafor family back in 1990. Their goal has continued to be to produce beautifully designed, practical and affordable pieces for their customers to enjoy. They create pieces ranging from large sculptures to tiny paperweights and dragon’s tears with a traditional glass blowing technique. Doug and Bo Sheafor and their children, Bram, Nathan and Alison, are among a small list of families who can still appreciate coming together over a pot of molten crystal. Through their hard work and continued study of glass blowing, the family has expanded
their list of products to include elaborate orbs, decorative bowls and unique dinnerware. Their exhibit will feature pieces as small as ring holders and glass pumpkins to large hanging pieces and hand blown bowls. Doug Sheafor is the artist behind the glass-blown solar system that hangs from the ceiling among a twinkling star field near the children's Homework Center here at the library. His work has helped spark children's interest in science and art. Following the unexpected death of Bo Sheafor in 2006, Doug has carried on AlBo Glass in memory of his wife with the help of his associates Laura Engelhardt, Joyce Knott and Jen Oliver. The exhibit features works by seven regional artists as well as works by nationallyrecognized artists from the permanent collection. Anyone will recognize the iconic images pulled from history and updated with contemporary themes and visuals. Special to the exhibit is a chance for visitors to take a walk with the artists through the exhibit as they share thoughts about how they've learned from the masters and how they've extended the traditional with fresh material. BOOK FIX WHERE YOUR LIBRARIAN UNLEASHES THE INNER BOOK NERD
Mosquitoland is a coming-of-age story about a maladjusted girl living with her father and stepmother in Mississippi. She finds out that her father has been keeping her mother’s illness from her and travels via Greyhound bus to find her in Ohio. Along the way she meets a vast array of characters and learns lessons about life.
— Becca Paquette, Teen Librarian
W
hen I was a little girl, I earnestly explained to my elementary school librarian that she shouldn’t shelve the Little House books in the fiction section because they were all true. As the long-suffering librarian explained to me, and what Wilder herself knew well, is that there is historical fact and there is truth, and the two aren’t necessarily synonymous. Wilder’s recently published autobiography, Pioneer Girl, is closer to historical fact and farther away from “the truth” of her beloved Little House books. In this text intended for adult readers, Wilder, then in her 60s, wrote of her experiences on the frontier, from her early years in Kansas to her marriage to Almanzo Wilder in Dakota Territory in 1885.
News correspondent Holly Bailey, an Oklahoma native, tells the story of the 2013 Moore, OK tornado in The Mercy of the Sky. Weather geeks and armchair storm chasers will be caught up in the science of tornado prediction. The book even includes a surprisingly interesting digression on the weather wars at the local news stations, but the real heart of the story lies in the personal stories of the residents of Moore. – Julie Nelson,
Rose Wilder Lane, Laura’s daughter and a respected and well-known author in her own right, couldn't find a publisher for her mother’s manuscript. It was only after Rose crafted the first part of the memoir into a children’s story that the Little House series was born.
author of Lost in the Stacks, tscpl.org
South Dakota Historical Society Press has now published the original Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography. Oversized with a lovely dust jacket, generously sprinkled with photos and maps, this beautiful volume is a gift for Little House fans. Every person, place, song and flora and fauna have been tracked down and clearly explained in annotations. The volume is so heavily annotated, in fact, that I found it a challenge to read; should I read the notes simultaneously with the narrative or afterwards? It was a problem I never did solve.
The Mary Smokes Boys is a heart-wrecking and unforgettable story of horse thieves and broken promises, of love and tragedy, of the fragility and grace of small town life and how one moment can alter the course of our lives. Critics have called this novel by Australian author Holland, “A life-changer.” — Jennifer Jones, author of Fiction 5, tscpl.org
The writing itself is serviceable (in all fairness, this was a first draft) with some flashes of descriptive brilliance and a few details of everyday life that are so endearing in the Little House books. Most noticeable is the flatness of the characters: Pa is fully developed, but Ma and Laura’s sisters fade into the background. In contrast to the dry, fact-based Pioneer Girl, the Little House books are a richly-detailed, warmly evocative portrayal of a loving family creating a series of homes on the challenging frontier – the real “truth” Laura wanted to convey. I’m thankful Pioneer Girl was never published in Laura’s lifetime since a forgettable autobiography would have replaced a true classic of American literature; I’m equally thankful that now all Little House fans have an opportunity to enjoy Laura’s original version.
