First stop for research

I didn't know the library did that! Students tasked with writing critical or research papers will quickly learn that our databases are a gold mine for citations. Each comes with an impressive "works cited" line to include in those bibliographies. Your teachers will thank you.

Can't remember the capital of North Dakota? Google it. Want to know the story of how the Chippewa Tribe migrated to North Dakota in the 1400s? Don't Google that. Get your inquiring mind straight to a library database. Did you know the library has over 80 databases full of excellent articles and authoritative resources? They're primed for academic and general research in just about every topic under the sun.

TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS

Unlike Google search results on topics like health, technology and consumer information, library databases never include info authored by salespeople, political thinktanks or straight-up 2

wackos. Bonus: Our material also comes with a real, live person - a librarian! Let's say that an article you've read in a database cites further research that you can't locate. Librarians are the bosses of locating research articles. With a few exceptions, the library's databases are accessible 24/7 from any computer or device, with your library card, at tscpl.org/research. Didn't know the library did that? Well, now you do. And knowledge is power.

A word from Gina

Awarded by Library Journal and Gale Cengage Learning to the best role-model library in North America

A

s Chief Executive Officer of the 2016 Library of the Year, I feel fortunate that our library was selected out of over 9,000 eligible libraries. But luck really has nothing to do with it.

We also discussed what our library professionals have done internally to prepare for making community impacts. We've changed the definition of what it means to be a librarian over the past several years.

It's really because of the great work our staff does every day. It's the support we get from our board of trustees and their guidance in utilizing the great resources we have. And it's because of the support of our community.

This award means that we are a worldclass library. Now, the work really begins. We're embarking on a new strategic plan that's really focused on what the community said they wanted and needed from us. And so everyone will discover their passion for learning. Every child will be ready for kindergarten. We're committed to making sure that everyone continues to learn throughout life to live their best life. We want every citizen in Shawnee County to be readers.

Library Journal sees a lot of applications every year. Ours told a story. The best applications are stories. Rather than just a list of the things we do and the stuff we have, we wrote about how we work to build community - through partnerships, facilitation and relationships. For a number of years, the library has really focused on how to make a difference in our community, especially in the areas of learning and literacy. We know that those are the areas our community wants us to focus on, because we've made it a point to ask our community, "What do you want from us?" In 2014, we conducted a community survey. Last summer, we conducted a series of meetings, talked to people face-to-face and asked, "What are your dreams and aspiration for your self, your family and your community? How can the library help you achieve them?"That process was a great deal of the story we told in our Library of the Year application. TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS

Thank you to the 225 staff members who work hard to assist our customers and to perform good work all across the county. Thank you to our board of trustees, and to our Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation. Thank you to the 100,000+ people who have library cards and who use the library. Thank you, citizens of Topeka and Shawnee County, for your support. — Gina Millsap, CEO, Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library 3

The all new face of play Sherry Hess has lots of favorite books for preschoolers, but plans to emphasize play-based learning in her role as Early Childhood Learning Coordinator on the library's new bus, set to arrive this fall.

Your library is both a physical place and a digital space. You can access each with your card. It’s your key to entertainment, information, resources and tools you can utilize to enrich your life. Your library card gives you access to a massive collection of books, of course. But it’s also your portal to media, technology and movies. With your card, you can gather the materials that help you learn, play and laugh. Your library card is small, but it is mighty. Get your card at tscpl.org/librarycard.

Sherry Hess, the library's new Early Childhood Learning Coordinator, may have a disarming smile and a soft spot for Pete the Cat, but make no mistake — she's one of Topeka's toughest warriors in the fight for early childhood literacy.

Sherry's going to be a familiar face as the coordinator for the library's newest outreach vehicle. The Learn & Play Bus will provide a fun, interactive play-based environment to teach the most essential skills necessary for school readiness. It will arrive on Topeka streets this fall.

Sherry, who joins the library with the experience from her former Parent Educator role at USD 501's Parents as Teachers program, knows the importance of getting the under-5-set ready to read.

"In our community, preschool may not be available to every child. With this vehicle, we're offering yet another point of access to library services that help your child learn and parents to learn how to become their child's first teacher."

"One of the library's community impact goals is 'Every child will be ready for kindergarten,'"says Sherry. "And that's exactly where I'll focus. I want parents to approach our services as more than

Sherry has followed that good advice to a T with her own son. FIND YOUR NEXT READ Kivrin, 7 years old

B

everly Cleary celebrated her 100th birthday this year, and although many of her books were published decades ago, they still remain popular and relevant to young readers. Why should a kid want to read Beverly Cleary? As the mom of two Beverly Cleary experts, 5-year-old Travis and 7-year-old Kivrin, I can attest that Beverly Cleary’s books aren’t outdated at all. Please Write in this Book by Mary Amato When Ms. Wurtz leaves a blank book in the Writer's Corner with a note encouraging those who find it to "talk to each other" in its pages, the students' entries spark a classroom-wide battle. — Marlana Hodgkinson, kids librarian

Why is Beverly Cleary such a good writer for kids? Travis: All the kids like her books. Everybody likes them. Maybe she thought of the future when she wrote these. Why listen to the audiobooks? Mom: The Ramona Quimby audiobooks are narrated by actress Stockard Channing. The Henry Huggins audiobooks are voiced by actor Neil Patrick Harris. The audiobooks bring the characters to life, especially for younger children who can’t yet read the books themselves. I asked the kids to tell me about some of their favorite characters and scenes. Ramona Travis: I don’t have a favorite part in Ramona, I like the whole thing! Kivrin: My favorite part is when Ramona is trying to get her dad out of smoking and she hangs up signs and he tears them down. Travis: That part is hilarious.

True Crime Addict by James Renner This is the story of Renner’s spellbinding investigation of the missing persons case of Maura Murray, which has taken on a life of its own for armchair sleuths across the web. In 2011, as an investigative journalist, James began researching the strange disappearance of Maura Murray. She was a UMass student who went missing after wrecking her car in rural New Hampshire in 2004. Over the course of his investigation, he uncovers shocking new clues about what may have happened to Maura, but also finds himself in dangerous situations with little regard for his own well-being. As his quest to find Maura deepens, the case takes a toll on his personal life. The result is a dual investigation of the complicated story of the All-American girl who went missing and James' equally complicated true crime addiction. — Julie Nelson, author of Lost in the Stacks, tscpl.org

Henry and Beezus Travis: Well, they’re really good friends and Henry likes to come over to Beezus’s house and plays checkers but Ramona always messes it up. The Book That Matters Most by Ann Hood Ava’s twenty-five-year marriage has fallen apart, and her two grown children are pursuing their own lives outside of the country. Ava joins a book group, not only for her love of reading but also out of sheer desperation for companionship. The group’s goal throughout the year is for each member to present the book that matters most to them. Ava rediscovers a mysterious book from her childhood—one that helped her through the traumas of the untimely deaths of her sister and mother. Alternating with Ava’s story is that of her troubled daughter Maggie, who, living in Paris, descends into a destructive relationship with an older man. Ava’s mission to find that book and its enigmatic author takes her on a quest that unravels the secrets of her past and offers her and Maggie the chance to remake their lives. — Jennifer Jones, author, Fiction 5, tscpl.org

Ribsy Kivrin: When Ribsy gets carried up the current is my favorite part. Socks Kivrin: When the baby Charles Williams locks his mother out of his room and starts messing up everything and tearing up the wallpaper and his crib and spilling his milk. That's my favorite. Travis: He blocks off the door and starts playing with Socks. Ralph S. Mouse Travis: My favorite is where the cat nearly gets him - and the cat doesn’t get distracted when the watch is lost and squeezes all the way in! Kivrin: We keep having all the same favorite parts! Mitch and Amy Travis: Mitch is my favorite – I like when Mitch stands up to Allen and fights him. Kivrin: I like when Amy and her friend Bonnie play pioneers.

Spud by John Van Der Ruit In 1990, thirteen-year-old John "Spud" Milton, a prepubescent choirboy, keeps a diary of his first year at an elite, boys-only boarding school in South Africa, as he deals with bizarre housemates, wild crushes and embarrassingly dysfunctional parents. — Andrea Bair, teen librarian

Strategic planinng is an ongoing process, but it begins with identifying the needs of the people we serve. We’ve compiled input from the community survey, our Board of Trustees, Friends of the Library, Library Foundation, Teen Advisory Board, staff and face-to-face with the community at public workshops. You want us to be community leaders in literacy and learning. Because of that emphasis on learning, the library’s staff is engaged in its own learning process—what we think of as the equivalent of a master's degree in human learning—to ensure that the literacy and learning work we do is based on research and current learning theory. We’re committed to making a difference in the community and achieving more through collective impact. Now we are armed with goals based on data about what Topeka and Shawnee County residents really want and need. We look forward to serving those needs in the decade to come. Stay tuned for information about how our work plan evolves. We're ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work.

Travel back in time to the 17th Century with these hand-picked titles. Instant Celebrity | On March 18, 1600, Catalina de Erauso escaped from a Basque convent dressed as a young man. She spent the rest of her life living as one. She worked her way to the New World, became a soldier, brawled, gambled, fought duels and eventually settled down as a mule driver in Veracruz, New Spain. In 1620, when she finally revealed that she was a woman, she became as instant a celebrity as is possible in the 17th century. In 1626, she was granted an audience with Pope Urban VIII. There she received a special dispensation to continue to dress as a man. Written around 1624, The Lieutenant Nun is her autobiography. 946.051 ERA

The Gunpowder Plot | The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament as a prelude to a planned revolt. A group of 13 men, led by Robert Catesby, planted 36 barrels of gunpowder in the undercroft. They planned to set them off on November 5 during the State Opening of England’s Parliament, which would be presided over by James I. Authorities were anonymously tipped off on October 26 and successfully foiled the plan. In the early hours of November 5, they discovered Guy Fawkes guarding the barrels of gunpowder. The other conspirators fled north when they received news of Fawke’s arrest but by May 3, 1606, all of the plotters had met their end, most by execution. Check out Faith and Treason by Antonia Fraser to learn all the sordid details. 942.061 FRA

Matters of the Heart | In 1628, William Harvey published An Anatomical Study of the Motion of the Heart and of the Blood in Animals, describing how blood is pumped throughout the body by the heart, and then returns to the heart and recirculates. The book was very controversial but became the basis for modern research on the heart and blood vessels.
