In 1963 at 24, Clarke took the reins as director of the Topeka Zoo. During his 26 years of service, he oversaw massive improvements to the zoo, including the Gorilla Encounter and the Tropical Rain Forest. “Being a zoo director wasn’t just a job. It was your life. You eat, sleep, drink, breathe, live zoo,” he said. Hey Mister–Your Alligator’s Loose! will hit stores in August 2009. His first book, entitled I’d Rather Be on Safari, was published in 2001. Both are published by Baranski Publishing Company of Lecompton.

Jobs and Career Resources Move to a New Neighborhood

ibrarians at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library are seeing the results of the recession. “Everyday we have people come in and ask for resume books, how to find a job – those sorts of things,” said Thad Hartman, Technical Services supervisor.

We’ve always had these materials, but housing these materials together improves access for our customers.”
According to the Kansas Department of Labor’s website, unemployment rates rose to 6.1 percent statewide in April, with Topeka’s rate hitting 6.7 percent. As people get laid off, they turn to the library for answers to their employment questions.
