Tips for School Success @ the Library The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library’s emphasis on reading and education doesn’t stop with the summer reading program. It is a yearround project that parents can use to help their children be successful: 1. SIGN UP FOR THE FALL READING PROGRAM “Reading is the key to education, which is one reason why it is so

important to instill it as a habit in your children,” said LeAnn Petrie, Youth Services supervisor. “After second grade, kids are no longer learning to read; they are reading to learn, so reading affects everything else.”

To help, the library has a fall reading program similar to the summer program. It offers prizes as incentives

for children to read. Petrie suggests that struggling readers use the library’s audiobooks or CliffsNotes paired with a book to help push them through. Sign up for fall reading at www.tscpl.org/fallreading. 2. SCHEDULE STUDY TIME “You can expect that your child will have homework of some kind,” Petrie continued on page 15 see BACK TO SCHOOL

FRIENDS Bargain hunting bibliophiles find pickers’ paradise

A

customer browses rows of books, keeping a finger on each title until he’s sure it isn’t one he wants before passing it over. He, like thousands of other people who come to the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale, is looking for a deal.

A special feature is the “Premium Collection” with special-edition, signed-by-the-author, or like-new books priced from $3-$20. Customers can buy vintage records, favorite DVDs, CDs and classic books for $2.

It’s likely he’ll get one. Book pickers will be able to choose from nearly 100,000 books on September 16, 17 and 18 at the Kansas Expocentre’s Ag Hall, 17th and Topeka.

“Hardbacks can be $30 at a retail bookstore. At the book sale, you can get a good hardback book for one or two dollars,” Taylor said. “And there is satisfaction knowing the money we make benefits the library.”

The sale opens Friday from 6-9pm to members of Friends of the Library; you can buy a membership at the door that evening for $20.

Saturday and Sunday are not as competitive when the doors open to the public with free admission. The bargains get better as the selection becomes picked-over, so it’s important to keep coming back.

“A lot of people buy a membership just for the first night to get in early and get the first pick,” said Mary Campbell, Friends office manager.

“The sale is the biggest event we put on,” Campbell said. “It earns about $43,000 after expenses. The money supports essential library services. Supporting the library is the whole reason the Friends exist.”

Warren Taylor, book sale chairman, said that Friday night is intense as Friends members and book dealers compete for the best deals. “They can get pretty competitive, they fight over stuff. Maybe not physically, but they’ll get loud,” he said.

2011 newbery medal winner

CLARE VANDERPOOL W

ichita author Clare Vanderpool won the 2011 John Newbery Medal for children’s literature for her first book, Moon Over Manifest. The Newbery is awarded annually by the American Library Association to the author who has made the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Vanderpool will share stories about the joy of writing and the inspiration behind her book at three programs Sept. 20 at 11am, 1pm and 3pm in Marvin Auditorium. Area schools will be attending the first two sessions, and the third is for the

public. After her talk, she will sign copies of her book, also available for purchase at the event.

available for checkout in hardcover, electronic download and audiobook. Moon Over Manifest’s main character, Abilene Tucker, ditches her summer plans to live with her father’s old friend, opting instead to snoop around her father’s old stomping grounds digging up secrets.

Set in the fictional small town of Manifest, Vanderpool’s novel draws from her own experiences as a young girl visiting her grandparents in the real town of Frontenac, Kan. She uses both humor and sorrow to tell this tale involving murders, orphans and bootlegging. Vanderpool researched the small town’s newspapers, yearbooks and graveyards to add a rich and colorful flavor for her story.

The book is set in the Depression and introduces young readers to that chapter in American history in a way they’ll appreciate and understand. If you are looking for read-a-likes to Moon Over Manifest, look no farther than the Kids’ Library desk. Ask a librarian to create a book list for you.

The novel is recommended for “tween” readers, ages 9 to 12, and is

KS150 MASTERED orks by more than 50 of Kansas’ première artists will be exhibited at the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery inside the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library starting Sept. 2.

The exhibit’s guest curator was Don Lambert, a writer, curator and advocate to the arts. The art is varied and diverse, but if one looks closely all of it has a connection to Kansas.

52 More Ways to Commemorate Kansas’ 150th The library’s been involved with commemorating Kansas’ 150th in more ways than hosting the Kansas Masters Invitational Art Show. We’re featuring art and artifacts from our 130-year-old permanent collection in a video series that tells our collective state history.

Art enthusiasts from all over the state will trek to Topeka for a final look at the Kansas Masters Invitational Art Show. The exhibit features art ranging from sweeping Kansas landscapes to contorted glass and metal sculptures. The show is traveling across Kansas in honor of the Kansas Sesquicentennial. It opened in April at the Strecker-Nelson Gallery in Manhattan, then in mid-July went down to the Center for the Arts in Wichita, and ends its run at the Sabatini Gallery on October 21.

Log on to www.tscpl.org and click on the sunflower icon on the Home page. Then watch any number of videos already published on 52 for Kansas’ 150th video page. Each Monday return for a new video about local and state history and culture.

The Kansas Masters Invitational Art Show includes Kansas artists who have attracted national attention, including Roger Shimomura, Marjorie Schick, and Stan Herd.

said. “It’s important to give kids a predictable time and place to study.” The library can provide that place with the OvesonCampbell Homework Center. It is open Monday through Thursday from 4-8pm and Sunday from 2-6pm during the school. The homeowork coaches, Leah Anderson and Tracie Hundley, both have degrees in education and help K-12 students. 3. GET HELP WITH HOMEWORK EARLY Some students come to the center only once or periodically. Others come in every night after school. “Right after progress reports, kids come in with big stacks of make-up work. It’s easier if they come in every day so they don’t get behind,” Hundley said.
