Ways to Use your Library during Kansas’ sesquicentennial

We all know we live in a great state. But did you know the fly swatter and the piggy bank were invented in Kansas? Get a broader picture of Kansas’ historical and cultural significance at our events commemorating 150 years of statehood. Plus, visit our website, www.tscpl.org, for fun Kansas history lessons starting Jan. 29. Occasions like this call for celebrations. Take advantage of your library’s resources to learn more about the Sunflower State. The Topeka Room (2nd Floor) boasts a abundance of local and Kansas history, including the best collection of Kansasauthored books. Tours are available upon request. The Alice C. Sabatini Gallery also offers guided tours of its Kansas 150/150 exhibit, which opens Jan. 29. Look for the 150th icon next to these and other events – including a birthday party for the kiddos – listed inside.

“Libraries don’t traditionally have a reputation for being epicenters of acoustic coolness. While we have a diverse music collection, Freegal fulfills the need for our tech customers,” Librarian Scarlett FisherHerreman said. “When you use your Digital Branch Library, it’s open 24/7.” Freegal is both Mac- and PC-compatible and works with any mp3 player, including iPod. Our library is the first library in the state to use this service.

Read With Me, for newborns and their parents Baby’s first step. First haircut. First word. There are many memorable milestones in your baby’s life; make getting a library card one of them.

“Reading is the gateway to learning. Your library will introduce you to all the different ways you can help your newborn grow into a bookworm,” Sevy said.

Join our Read with Me program. The program encourages parentchild bonding through reading and promotes ways to raise a reader. Janelle Bergman recently enrolled Lucas, who is 6-months old.

Sevy and her staff help parents find age-appropriate resources, like board books for newborns. Parents of children 18 months and younger can enroll for Read With Me and receive a free t-shirt for baby. For more information, call 785-580-4565.

“My husband and I said to each other we’ve got to get him started early,” she said. DECEMBER

Even though newborns can’t yet read, starting early is an important step, said LeAnn Sevy, Youth Services supervisor.

where’d you get that recipe? from the library...

There’s nothing like the smell of cooking as families prepare a festive holiday meal. Family favorites aside, everyone likes to taste and talk about A new dish. This year when guests ask where you got that recipe, respond “I got it at the library.” Save your time and money; use your public library to find recipes that fit your needs. Our librarians can help. Our Cooking Librarian Kathy Jennings is as familiar with our large and diverse cookbook collection as she is with her own kitchen. You can even tell us what type of recipe you are looking for via our Digital Branch Library, www.tscpl.org/guides. Click on Recipe Assistants. Librarians will email you back their recommendations.

You

makethe library better

Every dollar you give makes a difference Our Overson-Campbell Homework Center is reaching students who come back year after year to improve their study habits – and their grades. “They’re growing up with us,” one librarian recently said.

The library, along with Stone Nature Center staff, helps kids separate animal fact from fiction. Stone Nature Center Live is often a child’s first opportunity to see wild animals up close. Programs like this couldn’t happen without donor support. Our subject neighborhoods continue to expand. We started this display concept when we grouped all sorts of similar materials together in the Travel Neighborhood. We have added a Health neighborhood and an area for Jobs and Careers. Look for more of these popular areas in the future.
