“Bookmobile service has been important to library users in Topeka and Shawnee County since the 1940s,” Millsap said. “In a recent survey, customers told us how the bookmobile makes reading, research and homework assistance more accessible, especially for people who live some distance from the library. “Capitol Federal is celebrating 120 years of service to the Topeka community,” Slusher said. “This gift affirms their commitment of service. We are delighted Capitol Federal® will be recognized as a literary partner in providing convenient library services when, where and how our citizens need them.”

Jeanne Slusher, The Library Foundation Chair, praised Capitol Federal’s civic spirit.

“When determining our commitment to the library’s bookmobile project, we realized how important it is to provide an extension of the library to the citizens of Topeka, especially those who are not able to visit the library on a regular basis,” Dicus said. “The bookmobile also is a great opportunity for introducing the adventure of reading to children, for them to discover the fun of reading for a lifetime. We thank the library and The Library Foundation for inviting Capitol Federal® to serve as a Literacy Partner.” The Library’s Board of Trustees approved a multivehicle, multi-year plan to replace the aging bookmobile fleet in December 2012. The library currently owns and operates two bookmobiles that are open a combined 92 hours a week at 18 different locations throughout Shawnee County. One bookmobile was purchased in 1993 and the other was purchased in 1996. The vehicles’ age and the high amount of use they get have led to an increased number of repairs for each vehicle. The age of the vehicles and their specialized nature have also made it difficult to locate the necessary parts to make repairs.

HELPFUL TIPS FROM KATE & BECKY

CHECKLIST FOR THE TECH GIFT O

ne day, not too long ago, a woman attended one of our Computer and Gadget Help sessions. She opened a box she brought with her to reveal a tablet and she said, “My daughter gave me this. I know it’s a nice gift and it’s expensive, but can you tell me why I would want one of these?”

R Give them a real gift – lessons on how to use it. Tailor the setup to what they will enjoy. Or, if you set it up for them, make sure to write down or printout all of the account setup info that you used–especially the email address, username(s) and password(s). Tell them that this is important information to keep in a convenient place. R Be careful about giving tech gifts that will incur costs in the future. If it’s a phone or requires wireless, be sure the service is available and affordable for the person who will be using the gift. R An even better gift, if needed, is to help find the best Internet service or assist in setting up wireless at their home. For someone who isn’t very techy, it would be a great gift to help them by finding out what companies in their area have the best offers. Then, help them get it set up.

Tech gifts, gadgets, tablets, phones or ebook readers are like any other gift. They’re best when they suit the person receiving the gadget. And, sometimes, it isn’t just the gadget itself. The best part of the gift is the time, sharing, and help given with the item. When you choose a gift for someone who may not be tech savvy, here are a few things you might consider: R Figure out or ask what they like to do. For example, if they love to read and, especially, if they enjoy reading several things at once, an ereader might be a great choice. R Buy the same ereader or tablet or phone you use, so you can help them learn it and enjoy using it. R Buy a name brand tech gift so the person can get help from a number of sources – friends, other family members, or the store selling it. A couple came to the library with a tablet from an obscure company. There was no information about it either with the item or online. With new gadgets coming out every week, it’s better to choose something that is a name brand and has information about it readily available.

Remember, too, that the library is a source for free downloadable resources like Zinio for magazines, OverDrive for free e-audiobooks and ebooks, Freegal for free music, and now Hoopla for free streaming movies and music. All they need is a library card. Help them to set up a system to keep track of accounts and passwords. The library offers Computer and Gadget Help sessions on a regular basis. Check the Computer Class (page 13) for dates and times. Contact our computer trainers Kate or Becky at 580-4606 if you have more questions.

ith almost a million visits per year, tscpl.org is a valued resource for searching for books, managing your account, researching and accessing services like Ask a Librarian, Recipe Assistants and Book Group in a Bag.

t’s called Radio Frequency Identification, or RFID. It’s like a K-Tag, which allow drivers to get onto the Kansas Turnpike through the “fast” lane instead of stopping at the tollbooth.

More and more of you are visiting our site from your smartphones and tablets, and the redesign will deliver a responsive, mobile-friendly experience. When life gets busy and your family is on the go, rest assured you’ll be able to renew your books faster from the palm of your hand.

Checking out at the library using an RFID system will be a little like that experience: convenient, more seamless and faster. RFID is proven technology used around the world and at many libraries, from Johnson County, Kansas to Queens, New York. Your library is always looking at ways to improve your visits. The Board of Trustees decided to fund this plan that takes our check-out service to the next level at a board meeting this fall.

Even though the website will look different, you can still expect more of the content you love – staff blogs, videos, podcasts, event information, etc. Stay tuned to tscpl.org.

The Friends of the Library

Library books and other items will be tagged with a chip (or magnetic sticker), so you can simply put items on a new self-check machine and “voilà” all checked out. There will still be a library staffer around to help, especially at the beginning. This move will eventually free up staff for outreach endeavors as well as more in-depth customer service.

$43,000

RFID will take some time to implement because we’ll be re-tagging more than 400,000 items. To thoroughly and seamlessly do the job in a timely fashion, the library may need to close for at least a couple of days.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the sale a success. TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS
