T

he Junior League of Topeka (JLT) marks its 75th year of community service with a $75,000 gift that will support the Kids Library. The large gift makes the Junior League the lead donor on the Kids Library’s transformation. “Junior League has enjoyed a great relationship with the library, and it is such a valued asset to the community,” said Stacie Borjon, JLT President. “We are so excited about being part of the Kids Library and helping

make it the best it can be.” The library competed against five other possible recipients. The Kids Library project is a fourphase plan that will transform library space into a learnscape for children and families. Thus far, it had been funded privately through The Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library. The Junior League of Topeka 75th Anniversary Gift to the Community will fund the installation of large 3D learnscapes to encourage learning, exploration and family time. continued on page 4 see KIDS LIBRARY GIFT

A Healthy perspective, Goals

Before I had my heart attack, I made few goals in life. Now I’m better at making, revising and attaining goals. My goal setting is inspired by one of my all-time favorite quotes by Martin Luther King, Jr. “Human progress is neither automatic or inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.”

DON'T LET THESE MISTAKES DAMAGE YOUR CREDIT SCORE

GET CRAFTY WITH THIS ONLINE RESOURCE

Find inspiration for your next craft or hobby project by easily searching hundreds of magazines and books in one place: the Hobbies and Crafts Reference Center. Search full-text articles for creative ideas on that next sweater, model train and scrapbook from today’s most popular craft and idea magazines and books. Hobbies and Crafts Reference Center provides information about many of the most popular hobbies, including collecting, games and electronics, model building, needlework, outdoors and nature, photography, scrapbooking and papercraft.

Your credit score is a quantitative measure of your creditworthiness, rangin g from 300 to 850. It is based on the foll owing categories: 1. Making late payments 2. Carrying a big balance 3. Closing a credit account 4. Opening an additional credit account 5. Defaulting The Federal Trade Commission's Credit Repair: How to Help Yourself explain s how you can improve your creditworthi ness and lists legitimate resources for low -cost or nocost help. Read my blog to dig dee per into the five categories; visit www.tscpl. org and search for "credit score." – Terry Miller

It is important that you set short-term and long-term goals. Short-term goals can put you on the path to success and help you achieve those long-term goals. My main health goal is to do whatever it takes to have a long and healthy life. To get there, one of my goals has been to eat healthier. Another is to exercise at least five times a week. I am pretty consistent on this, but there are times when I just don’t feel like exercising. I’ve learned over the years that if I put my shoes on and try to at least get in 10 to 15 minutes of exercise it normally turns into 30 minutes. Setting and attaining easier goals gives us the motivation to move on to harder goals. – Michael Perkins

By replacing the word justice with words such as financial freedom, health, wellness, higher learning, etc., this quote says it all. Reaching certain goals may require significant, long-term and individual sacrifice. Maybe by taking that first step, changing that one thing, it was all you needed to get out of your comfort zone and move beyond the who, what and where that is keeping you from attaining your goals.

Ereaders at your fingertips

W

hether you’re in the market for an ereader for yourself or someone else, let the library help cut through the sales pitch and get to the gist of what device will suit your needs best. Some of the latest devices to hit store shelves, including the Kindle Fire, iPad and the Nook, are on display at your library. Visit the ereader display in the Reference Room. In addition to seven different ereaders, you’ll find a retail price comparison and tech specifications, including storage capacity for each device. We know many bookworms for whom storage space is a factor. You can’t take the devices home, but you can spend time testing them out in the library. Staff is nearby to help answer your questions or give you a demonstration on the devices. One-on-one appointments can be requested via www.tscpl.org/ consult-a-librarian. After you have purchased your ereader, fill it up with downloadable media – from ebooks to music – available with your library card. Ebooks check out for up to 21 days. The library also has classes and handouts on the ebooks service through OverDrive (see page 13) to help you be a more informed consumer. Did you know the first commercial ereaders became available in 1998? For more technology facts, take our computer quiz on page 6. Devices in our ereader display: • Amazon Kindle Fire™ • Amazon Kindle Keyboard • Barnes & Noble Nook Color™ • Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet™ • Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch™ • iPad® • Sony eReader

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN OUTREACH STORYTELLER

”Wake up, Boomer!”

Dozens of young children in the community love to say these three little words. Boomer, the loveable bear puppet, often steals the show at storytime, but that’s okay because he helps get kids excited about reading. Boomer’s a busy bear. He travels with the library’s five Outreach Storytellers to 75 daycare centers and preschools, helping tell stories to more than 3,700 children ages 3–5 each month. Children have an opportunity to get up and dance with librarians. They have so much fun they hardly realize they are learning vocabulary skills, narrative skills, letters and shapes. Storytimes allow them to practice the concentration skills they’ll need in school. The stories, props and music spur their creativity.

“Our kids can never get enough books, songs and stories. Storytime unites the kids. They anticipate the visits from the library,” said Angela Stous, Building Blocks director. “Reading is magical. No matter where you are in life, reading is important to help you challenge yourself.” For these children who cannot yet read, the challenge is fairly rudimentary and includes things like following text left to right, and being able to describe what they see on the page. These simple steps spark an interest in reading that will last their whole lives through.

The Outreach Stortyellers often give day-care activity directors ideas for everyday story sharing. The storytellers share 188 storytimes each month, lasting about 30 minutes per visit. To discuss the possibility of a visit by a Outreach Storyteller to your facility, call Youth Services at 580-4565.

ENTRANCE

Five learnscapes will be added: • A kid-friendly façade at the entrance of the Kids Library where donor recognition signage will also be placed. • A lighthouse reading nook ideal for sharing a good book in. • Children will think school is fun when they play in our school bus. • Return trips to the library will be a must when a Tyrannosaurus Rex is standing in the nonfiction stacks. • The salt-water aquarium will be wrapped in the arms of an octopus and coral providing an ocean-like experience in the middle of the Great Plains. “The library has nearly 40,000 registered cardholders who range in age from birth to 17 years,” said Marie Pyko, Public Services Director. “These installations will guide children as they grow and go from learning to read to reading to learn. We are grateful the Junior League of Topeka believes in the potential impact of this project as much as we do.”

Illardi promises to deliver an engaging, interactive presentation about something that affects all of us. “At least 1 in 4 people will experience a depressive illness and almost every person is impacted by it somehow,” he said. remembers the joy of attending library storytimes as a preschooler. Her mother would take her to the Salina Public Library where she taught her the strong reading skills Turner practices to this day. Turner got her first library card at age 5.

Life brought Turner to Topeka where she’s made a career of working in education. Her upbringing and passion for children and education fuel her service as a library trustee. “The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library is an asset to our community and our future,” she said. “I wanted to become a library trustee to be part of that exciting future of providing citizens with information, education, and programs for people of all ages and from all walks of life.”

of modern life. Ilardi wrote The Depression Cure: The 6-Step Program to Beat Depression Without Drugs. In it, he writes about his research and the benefits of Therapeutic Lifestyle Change, including healthy sleeping habits, dietary changes and increase social connection. Reserve a copy at catalog.tscpl.org.

The library has dedicated areas for children and teens to read and play. The effort to demonstrate the value of libraries to young people impresses Turner, and she hopes it pays off and they become library users as adults. She’s proud of the library's efforts to provide employment resources as well as more leisure-time programs on specific topics like nature, crafting and cooking. “It's evident the staff is committed to their customers as well as growing and changing in order to always meet the customers' needs.”

Learn more about seasonal affective disorder and other depressive illness at his talk. Q&A will follow. Banish the Blues is a partnership program with KU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. See event details on page 10.

Turner enjoys spending time with her husband and dogs. She’s the owner of Leading Edge Educational Services, LLC and facilitates virtual school and homeschool classes.

“I brought my kids here since they were old enough to read, and it’s something we continue to do every two weeks,” he said, adding that he’s in every week for something new to read. Martin is currently reading The Art of War by Sun Tzu and Losing the Race, Self-Sabotage in Black America by John H. McWhorter. Two of the efforts Martin has been involved in as a trustee have ensured books are easier to find and more of them are available for customers to check out: the purchase of a new library catalog and restoring the collections budget, which had been slashed 60 percent over three years as a result of the recession.

The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy opens with a shocking act: a man sells his wife and child at a country fair in rustic England. In time, the man becomes successful and respected, but his shameful past makes this a tragic novel. Read the free ebook. Additional discussion at www.tscpl.org/tag/classics.

In Topeka, few people are remembered more fondly than Zula Bennington Greene, the longtime columnist for the Capital-Journal. Nearly a quartercentury after her death, Woodley Press is publishing Peggy of the Flint Hills, a memoir of her childhood and young adulthood that Greene wrote during her last years. Her daughter, Dorothy Hanger, and Eric McHenry, Washburn University, read from the book. ■ Marvin Auditorium 101A
