december–january YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION STARTS HERE TO MAIL OR NOT TO MAIL that is the question BUILD YOUR ‘NET WORTH AUDIOBOOKS & DVDs ARE ON THE MOVE

| 2009-10 | schedule

CHANGES RESULT IN FASTER DELIVERY

All materials mailed after January 1 subject to mailing fee

T

his time of year brings changes to many people’s lives. We’re undergoing changes at the library too, and we hope they will be good for you. Starting Jan. 2, if you receive materials by mail, expect items to arrive faster than ever. In order to improve our mailing service, we will begin charging for it. Customers who place holds in 2009 will be called and given the option of a fee-based mailing or pick up at the library or Bookmobile. For $2 per item, your items will be delivered to you by USPS Priority Mail. Your library account will be charged this fee when you request an item. This charge applies to almost all customers.*

“We don’t operate like a warehouse with a large inventory at arm’s reach. Sometimes the item you want just isn’t in, and then we mail what we can immediately and mail the other requests as they come in,” he said. Also, if you owe the library $10 or more, your account is blocked. This means you can request items, but mailing will be delayed until the fee is paid. Paying to have items mailed is not for everyone. You may always pick up your items at the library or at a bookmobile. When you request an item, you’ll be able to let us know whether you would like it mailed or if you’ll pick it up. There are three easy ways to be notified when your materials are ready: email, phone or mailing your reserves.

Priority Mail delivery is $2/item

Pay mailing fees at the checkout counter, bookmobile or online(pending). Or add money to your library card account by using the Account Payment Machine in the New Books, Movies and Music area. By upgrading our mailing service, you won’t have to wait nearly as long for your items to get to your mailbox. “That was a common complaint we got – ‘the slow delivery ate into my borrowing time,’” Paul Brennan, circulation manager, said. “With the implementation of late fees, a new urgency developed for books and other materials to arrive quicker.” Shipping by Priority Mail guarantees customer’s materials will arrive in one to three days after the library sends them to the post office. We cannot guarantee, however, that you will receive your items in one to three days of your request, Brennan said.

one | editorial

A new self-service, holds/reserve center (the former copy center) will allow customers to pick up their books and audiobooks instead of going to the checkout desk. Requested CDs, DVDs and Interlibrary Loan items will still be at the checkout desk. After five days, unclaimed items will go to the next person on the waiting list. *The library is committed to serving library customers who could not otherwise access the library without the mailing service. Customers who do not have access to the library or bookmobile may apply for services through Red Carpet. For more information or to see if you qualify, call Stephanie at 785-580-4546.

NONFICTION DVDs NOW SHELVED WITH BOOKS

FIND BOOKS ON CD WITH MOVIES AND NEW BOOKS

he library’s nonfiction DVDs, currently found in the New Books, Movies & Music area, will be moved to the stacks and interfiled with the nonfiction books in 2010. “Now, when someone is looking for books on cooking or grilling, the DVD will be right there. It adds to the discovery process, and people won’t have to go to two places to find materials on the same subject,” Thad Hartman, Technical Services supervisor, said.

Also in 2010, we will relocate our CDs and cassettes (audiobooks) collection for adults to the New Books, Movies & Music area.

T

The only group of the nonfiction DVDs to remain in the New Books, Movies & Music area are theatrically released documentaries, which will be getting their own “Documentaries” section in the movie collection.

“The move gives the audiobooks a better home in the library, and it makes it easier for people to browse,” Thad Hartman, technical services supervisor, said.

RISE TO THE CHALLENGE Help us make this your place. The library works every day to meet the challenge of customer’s needs.

“We see the library as more than just a library. It’s really a community gathering place when you look at the children’s programs, computer classes and the use it’s made of Marvin Auditorium. The library has put on a lot of great programs, and where would we have them if we didn’t have the library.” Adrian and Mary Allen, library volunteers and advocate The library holds about 2,100 programs for children and teens and about 500 computer classes each year. In 2010, The Library Foundation will play a major role in supporting programs for children and teens. “The growth of the library is probably one of the best examples I’ve seen of Topeka investing in itself and its future.” Eric McHenry, library advocate In 2008, we reached a record number of 2,241 student contacts in Overson-Campbell Homework Center, founded and funded by a grant by The Library Foundation. “I support the library because it is accessible to everyone. It makes the opportunity to read, learn and connect available to individuals, families and the entire community.” Michelle Cuevas-Stubblefield, donor and library advocate Our outreach services ensure that citizens who are elderly, disabled or homebound can still be kept connected to their love of reading. Donations have assisted in bringing the library to the community via our bookmobiles. “Philanthropy has always played a role in expanding the gallery’s collection. We are eternally grateful that donations have enabled important acquisitions.” Larry Peters, former Alice C. Sabatini Gallery director The Library Foundation helps fund the gallery’s annual art exhibit for children, now in its 8th year. Donors assist in expanding the permanent art collection in numerous ways, including personal gifts of artwork.
