ook, it’s 2015. We’re over the Dewey Decimal System. Well, admittedly, we’re not entirely over Dewey. But we’ve devised an ingenious system to make it more easy to browse through thousands of books without having to yank open a cabinet or even look up a title on the catalog. It’s called neighborhoods. Neighborhoods make the library more like a book store. You will find your favorite subjects grouped together in sections by genre and interest at the library. Are you a craft-a-holic? Good news—all the best books about crafting are located in one place. Let a colorful cover pull you in, and flip through the pages a bit. Tuck it under your arm as you breeze through the exit, assured that this is the one that will inspire you. The book won’t cost you a cent. But you’ve still had the beauty of the bookstore moment. Whatever your interest, we’ve got it covered. Get into the library and start doing stuff. Cook, garden, exercise, budget, find your newest fascination. easy steps

onating books and other items to the Friends of the Library makes a huge impact on the library. Thank you! Before items can be transformed into financial support, our tireless Friends volunteers must clean, sort and shelve. Do a Friend a solid and make sure to hit these three steps when you bring your items to the library:

When you make a gift to The Library Foundation, all gifts are 100% invested in library programs and services that are vital to sustain our diverse community. Goals are set for 2015, and your continued support ensures that we will have a worldclass library. You can make a gift online at foundation.tscpl.org, mail it to: 1515 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, 66604, or drop off your donation at the library.

1 Inspect – Take a few moments and give a once-over look at each item. The Friends resell these things, and that definitely can’t happen if they have been wet, moldy, dirty, smell funny or have bugs in them. Be careful what you might unintentionally donate along with books! 2 Check to see if we accept your items – Before you drop off your items, check to see if we accept them. We’ve got a handy list of the items we do accept at tscpl.org/friends

The Library Foundation website (foundation.tscpl.org) has a new look that includes information and resources about our library supporters. The Foundation’s leadership

3 Donate in the right place – If you’re only dropping off a few items, you can put them in our drop box at 10th and Garfield. If you’ve got a big load, take them to our loading dock.

If you have a child over the age of five, you know about Minecraft®. It’s one of the best-selling video games of all time. In the world of Minecraft®, kids get to harvest resources and build whatever they can imagine. It’s a bit more complex than that, but that’s the gist. Minecraft allows kids to utilize the furthest reaches of their imaginations while learning practical life lessons.

ew York Times bestselling author Kelly Corrigan is coming to Topeka as part of the paperback tour for her memoir, Glitter and Glue. Corrigan wants every stop to be a fundraiser for a non-profit. Her Topeka reading will support financial aid for deserving students at Topeka Collegiate School. The library is a co-sponsor of this event.

Characters who have Grit

harles Portis introduces the reader to Mattie Ross, who narrates from old age the great adventure of her life:

“People do not give it credence that a fourteen-year-old girl could leave home and go off in the wintertime to avenge her father’s blood but it did not seem so strange then, although I will say it did not happen every day.”

In language straightforward but strongly her own, full of feeling but unsentimental, she goes on to relate the tale of her search for her father’s murderer, “a coward going by the name of Tom Chaney,” during a hard winter across the “Choctaw Nation” in the last quarter of the 19th century. To aid her in her quest, she seeks a man with a quality she calls “true grit” and thinks she finds him in Rooster Cogburn, a shabby and overweight but affable federal marshal. Also seeking Chaney, for other crimes, is LaBoeuf, a proud, young Texas Ranger, who enters into an uneasy partnership with the pair.

Mattie Ross
Raised on a farm in Yell County, Arkansas, Mattie is resolute and resourceful in seeking justice for the murder of her father.

Ned Pepper’s Gang

Reuben J. “Rooster” Cogburn
A former Confederate soldier, Rooster has become a federal marshal who patrols the Indian Territory.

LaBoeuf
Proud, handsome, and something of a dandy, the Texas Ranger is seeking Tom Chaney for the murder of a Texas state senator.

Tom Chaney
An itinerant hired man on Frank Ross’s farm, Chaney kills and robs his employer on a trip to Fort Smith to buy horses and then flees to the Indian Territory. TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY | 1515 SW 10th | tscpl.org

A MATCH MADE IN SPACE THE LIBRARY & 712 INNOVATIONS OFFER MAKERSPACES

A

makerspace is a space where you can make stuff. You already figured that out. But the space itself, whether big or small, is limitless when you consider the possibilities for what you can do in a makerspace. Topeka has two makerspaces. The library's Make-It Lab, is chock full of equipment you can use to make, create, design, compose, record and manipulate. It contains a bevy of tech tools and software. It even boasts a 3D printer. Novice inventors, small business owners, creative professionals, the curious creator — this space is for you. Visit tscpl.org/make-it-lab to find out how to get in and get making. The library has formed a new partnership with a makerspace downtown, 712 Innovations (712 S. Kansas Ave), opening in late January. Their

setup has more of an emphasis in the hands-on, the physical act of making in a workshop-style, industrial atmosphere. “We’re more of an industrial version of what the library has,” says Jared Starkey, executive director at 712 Innovations. “We’ll have a laser cutter, milling machines, saws and drills. You’ll be able to make something with your hands that you can hold in your hands.” The library is going to be involved at 712 with collections and resources for turning that passion for making into a viable business. And since 712 is a membership-based model, the library will soon offer day passes for customers to try before they buy.

Make-It Lab “It’s an exciting new venture,” says Marie Pyko, the library’s director of public services. “It’s an opportunity for us to increase our presence in the downtown community and help put resources in people’s hands.”

NOW SHOWING at the

ALICE C. SABATINI GALLERY

InCiteful Clay Jan 28 through Mar 15

It’s an art exhibit that would be at home in New York’s SOHO neighborhood, InCiteful Clay is instead opening at the Alice C. Sabatini Art Gallery Jan 28. Why so urban? The exhibit, consisting of ceramics by 26 artists, is provocative and challenging. The works within will make you uncomfortable, and will put you face-to-face with ugly societal issues and stoke outrage. It will also make you laugh. Walking into InCiteful Clay is asking for the emotional wringer, but it’s also an example of art as a vehicle for generating important discussions.
