The art of building our community
“Your circumstances and environment don't have to define who or what you are” is Topeka Police Officer Timothy Bell’s motto. Bell is one of many community members and representatives from community organizations who are sharing their stories, pictures and objects in the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery exhibit African-American Builders of Topeka. Bell is displaying 54 track and field varsity medals and the story of his work with the OK program, in which African-American men mentor African-American boys though open dialogue and physical activity.

overcome any of life's obstacles,” said Bell. “The medals represent an outward result of inward character. Doing the right thing even when no one is looking. Helping others to succeed by sharing knowledge. Caring and loving your teammates. All of these are traits I carry with me every day to work as I serve my community.” View more objects, images and the extraordinary stories of AfricanAmericans who helped build and continue to build Topeka and Shawnee County in this exhibit at the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery, Jan 19 through March 11. This exhibit is a collaboration of community members and the library.

Leave a lasting legacy to support the library for years to come by including a gift in your will to The Library Foundation. “There is so much that this library has done for me personally and that’s why I give back through the foundation because it’s had such a meaningful impact on my life,” said Haley DaVee. “I know that there’s so much more that the library can do through gifts from donors.” The vibrancy and whimsy of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland now flows through the streets of Shawnee County thanks to Margaret and Hugh McCausland’s planned gift to the Foundation. Alice, the newest bookmobile, is a physical representation of one couple’s devotion to the library. The McCauslands were longtime Friends of the Library volunteers and book lovers.

e s u o h l e e h w y h t w o n K By Kyle Moreland, Interlibrary Loan Specialist The singer/songwriter is my wheelhouse. It's the comfy chair in the musical room that perfectly fits my post-EAR-ior. (Are gluteus maximus/ hearing organ puns a thing or did I just break new ground in the pun world?) The singer/songwriter is the ultimate oneperson army. (For purposes of metaphor just ignore the fact that they usually have a loyal backing band behind them.) Armed with only a pen and an instrument they document and challenge the world around them. Join me for a spin in my wheelhouse. ______________________ READ MORE of Kyle’s recommendations in his regular web article 3 Albums tscpl.org/3albums. ______________________
Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit The Nashville Sound 2017
I love how one album can crack an artist wide open for you. Like the right key in the lock of a musician's sound. This album turned all the tumblers for me. I'm a certified Jason Isbell fan now. What I expected from a record titled The Nashville Sound is not what came out through my earbuds. The title is more a declaration of what Nashville is evolving into. His sound is fleshed out with Americana, folk and rock elements that make it extremely palatable to those of us who aren't too keen on anything straight-up country. Lyrically and thematically is where Isbell truly shines the brightest. Basically, The Nashville Sound is as though a parallel-universe-smalltownSouthern-doppelganger of me with better lyrical aptitude compiled many of my feelings into songs and recorded them. Maybe it's a life stage perspective (Isbell and I are both mid-30s dudes with toddler-aged daughters). Faves: "Anxiety," "Chaos and Clothes," "Hope the High Road" and "Something To Love."

Aimee Mann Mental Illness 2017
It is possible that in the known universe of album titles there is not one more apropos then Aimee Mann naming her latest release Mental Illness. Few songwriters have amassed a body of work that so clearly illuminates the teetering unease of a mind that has turned against itself.
Sean Rowe New Lore 2017 I first stumbled onto Sean Rowe's gruff growly timbre via his catchy, soul-infused 2014 single Desiree. It's the kind of voice that indelibly embosses itself on the metal foil of your memory.
Accordingly, this album is not easy listening. Aimee Mann isn't a songwriter who just cuts to the bone... she finishes the job by slicing straight through the marrow.
His vocal chords reach down deep. His vocal range formally resided amongst yetundiscovered prehistoric sea creatures in some unexplored cavernous depths of the Mariana Trench. It's low, okay?
While Mental Illness may lack easy-listenitude it is nevertheless sonically breathtaking. Sparse and delicately desolate as Mann layers her voice over just a handful of instruments. It's an interesting dichotomy between the haunting beauty of the melodies/instrumentation and the overtly melancholy lyrical content that wades neck deep (or maybe cerebrum deep) into the waters of disappointment, tragedy, betrayal and regret.
Lyrically, Rowe weaves words with the invisible strings that tie all of us together. New Lore plays out like a series of vignettes exploring the spiderweb of relationships within Rowe's reach. New Lore is another aptly titled album as it encapsulates what we are all doing in our day-to-day – writing new chapters in the tale of our life with the people around us.
Just as in real life, Mental Illness doesn't offer any easy answers to the mind's unease. There's some hidden power in simply talking (or singing) about it. Equally powerful is the knowledge that no matter what the state of the space between your ears, you are definitely not alone in the fray. That's truly the gift that gifted songwriters give. (Thanks, Aimee.)
Faves: "The Salmon," "I'll Follow Your Trail," "Newton's Cradle" and "To Leave Something Behind."
Faves: "Stuck in the Past," "Rollercoasters," "Patient Zero" and "Simple Fix." 5
PS: That last Fave listed ("To Leave Something Behind") is only available on the Hoopla deluxe version of the album that you can check out with your library card. FEB-MAR 2018
Kindergarten Learn & Play Bus Ready…Set…Go!
Here comes the
I
It's preschool on wheels! Hop on the bus with your 0-5 year old for story time and learning play with puzzles, art, blocks and imagination.
Let’s get your child ready for kindergarten! Children’s first experiences in school can influence the way they relate and learn for the rest of their life. Kindergarten readiness focuses on a child’s physical, social-emotional and cognitive development – rather than just a child’s age. Providing young children with a variety of experiences will help their development and get them ready for school.
We have a special section of books in the Kids Library called School Readiness. There are books on letters, numbers and shapes. We also have wordless books that provide great opportunities for you and your child to tell your own stories. Our children’s library programs, such as Preschool Storytime, Musical Storytime and the Learn & Play Bus are full of songs, stories, movement and rhymes – experiences that will help your child get ready for kindergarten!
SCHEDULE Mondays
• Let them use safety scissors. This will help develop fine motor skills. • Play catch to help develop eye/ hand coordination and spend quality time together. • Take walks together. Talk about what you see. Afterward, draw a picture of what you saw. This helps develop their storytelling skills. • Sandbox play will allow your child to explore math concepts such as measurement, more/less, bigger/smaller and equal. • Build something together with blocks – wooden, LEGO® or cereal boxes. Put puzzles together. Both help develop problem solving skills. • Read a book together. Ask openended questions. Ask your child to tell the story in their own words.
9:30am–Noon Velma Paris Community Center 6715 SW Westview Rd
• Play with playdough. Rolling it out and squishing it helps strengthen finger muscles.
1:30–4pm Mother Teresa Catholic Church 2014 NW 46th St
• Create a store or restaurant for some dramatic play. Let your child create grocery lists or write down your order at the restaurant.
Tuesdays
9–11:30am Hillcrest Community Center 1800 SE 21st St
• Put on a puppet show for the family. Puppets can also help your child’s social-emotional development by giving them a “friend” to talk to or a way to speak to another child without having to directly talk to the child.
1–3pm Auburn Community Center 121 W 11th St, Auburn
Thursdays
9–11:30am Oakland Community Center 801 NE Poplar St
• Give your child a word, like “cat” and ask them come up with rhyming words using all of the consonants: bat, gnat, mat, zat – nonsense words are great, too!
1–3:30pm Walmart 2630 SE California Ave No service Feb 12-19 for maintenance. 785-580-4400 or tscpl.org for more info. Watch the website for new stops.
