marks a big milestone in civil rights history. Rest assured the 60th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board won’t pass by without a little pomp and circumstance in Topeka. The library, in partnership with Brown v. Board National Historic Site, pays homage with the Created Equal Film Series, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. CIVIL RIGHTS continued from page 1 “We hope to spark a dialogue about the changing meaning of freedom and equality in our nation and our community,” said Donna Rae Pearson, local history librarian. “Expect to hear stories that remind us of those who fought for equality. And as the world changes, it’s important to understand the lessons learned so that repeating history can be avoided for others.”

T

he first five years of life are critical for developing skills needed throughout life. Make the most of those formative years by bringing your child to the library. We’ve been designated as a Family Place Library™, so what does that mean for you?

YOUR FAMILY’S PLACE IS HERE When building your child’s literacy skills, remember these ABCs: Attention, Bonding and Communication.

potty training, sleep, parenting styles and behavior issues.

Play and cuddle at the library. Children learn through play, so our Kids Library offers spaces for children to explore. It is through experiences with blocks, puzzles, dolls, dress-up clothes, puppets and play kitchens that kids develop skills that will ensure they are kindergarten-ready. Simply stated, parents are encouraged to wire a healthy brain by talking to, reading to, singing to, playing with and cuddling their child. Be a hands-on teacher. Family Place Libraries™ emphasizes the parent as the child’s first and best teacher and encourages interaction between parent and child. Programs and services focus on children birth to 5 years and support social, emotional, and intellectual learning.

Let librarians lead the way! As a Family Place Library,™ we can also help parents connect through library programs for young children – Baby Bookworms (0-18 months), Sneak, Peek & Read (18-24 months), Tot Time (2 years) and Preschool Storytime (3-5 years). Look for upcoming parent/child workshops, offered three times a year beginning March 17. The 5-week workshop focuses on play and incorporates community resources and parental support. Parents will have the opportunity to meet others facing similar joys and challenges of raising young children. The library received this designation as part of a three-year IMLS National Leadership Grant that supports 28 libraries in seven states.

Find something for them AND you. Within the Kids Library, you can find music, magazines and books for little ones as well as our parenting collection that includes materials on

REALITY TOUR THE TRUTH ABOUT DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE

S

ometimes there comes a time in your teen’s life when they engage in behavior that really raises the hairs on the back of your neck. Your opportunity to teach them the harsh reality of substance abuse comes March 30 and 31 at the Prevention and Recovery Services (PARS) Reality Tour, which delivers a straight-forward approach to education and prevention.

“The library is the information and resource hub of the community. We wanted a non-judgmental place youth 10 years and up could come to,” said Sheyvette Dinkens, PARS addiction counselor. “We hope attendees understand what it’s really like to get booked into Shawnee County Juvenile Detention Center or what a real emergency room scene is like.”

A recent survey showed 43 percent of Shawnee County youth reported that they have drank beer, wine or hard liquor at least once in their lifetime.

You may need a more subtle approach to talking to your teen about drugs and alcohol. Lissa, our Health Information Librarian, says I’ve Got this Friend Who… and The Dirt on Drugs are easy-to-read books that speak teens’ language. The library also has books on smoking cessation and mental health issues. Check out the many resources in the Health Information Neighborhood in the West Wing.

Teens will watch actors stage an overdose and listen to a real recovering addict. They will take the worst “selfie” of their lives when the Reality Tour’s computer program morphs their faces to show the effects of drug abuse. Parents are encouraged to attend with their youth. Families will witness emotions and turmoil caused by alcohol and drug use.

hy is the erotic romance genre, or as I like to call it – smut, so popular? Two words… great romance! There are other attributes, but that is the crux of it. I embrace being the bona fide smut reader here at the library. If a book I check out doesn’t have a sexy guy on the front, people start to question my reading choices. I love it and own it! Whether you are a closet reader of smut or you read it with pride, here is why I love reading this genre.

Every woman thinks they can change “him” at some point in her life. Whether you were a teenager in love, freshly out of college or in midlife, we have all thought at one point, I can fix him. WRONG! But we saw Anastasia do just that in the Fifty Shades of Grey series. She “fixed” him. She brought this powerful man to his knees and made him crazy. I know that was the allure to me. Well, besides the fact that there were some, shall we say, interesting sex scenes. I will admit I had to get a dictionary out a few times. One could say it was an educational work as well. I digress. Girl meets guy, they like each other, things are going well until something or someone comes into the picture to derail them, they work through it and live happily ever after. I like the journey and how that journey takes me back to the excitement and newness one feels while dating, anticipation. These stories would never happen in real life especially to me (even if I wasn’t happily married). What are my chances that I would run into an extremely wealthy, good looking man who wants to shower me with gifts, take charge and satisfy me in every way? Not very. Oh! And it would be an bonus if he’s a vampire (but that’s a discussion for another time). Don’t get me wrong, I love my husband and wouldn’t trade him for the world, but he’s real. Real means I see some of the less-than-appealing attributes on a regular basis. In these books we don’t have to know about those little things that grate on our nerves sometimes…you know what I’m talking about. Not much more to say than that.

Here are some of my favorite authors and series I’ve enjoyed. These would be what I call the “bossy boys” – they like to be in charge. • Maya Banks – Breathless series • Sylvia Day – Crossfire series • Sylvain Reynard – Gabriel’s Inferno series • R.K. Lilley – Up in the Air series • Elizabeth Reyes – The Moreno Brothers series

If you’re interested in other books/series I like to read, you can find me on Goodreads.com. Come check out the other books I read including my paranormal smut, athlete smut, bad boys smut (very different than bossy boys), cowboy smut and then some things that are on the safer side…good old-fashioned romances. Larry Schwarm | Burning Grass

ire. Flame. Smoke. Energy in its most raw form.

Every spring ranchers and prairie managers arrange to burn parts of the Flint Hills to control weeds, invasive species and keep the grasses healthy. Artists also attend the burns and create amazing representations of it. From the artists’ views, we get to feel what it’s like to be at a burn. They work in photography, painting, glass and ceramics to express their response to this fierce and beautiful element. The art is as dramatic and beautiful as the burns themselves. The role of the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery is to help people “get” art, and at the Kansas Burns exhibit, opening February 7, we’re also helping people get science. This exhibit gives you a broader understanding of prairie fires. Learn more about the annual prairie fires and understand this scientific event that is misunderstood and often problematic because of the smoke and its impact on air quality. Burning has a different impact on the environment, depending on the frequency and time of year of the burn. The art will seem so real, you’ll almost hear it crackle. Enjoy works by Louis Copt, Judith Sabatini, Gene Sievers, James Pringle Cook, James Nedresky, Larry Schwarm, Jim Richardson and Jennifer Sommers.
