KANSAS READS Dreams From My Father by Barack Obama KANSAS TAX FORMS online – the library can help LEIGH RUBIN creator of Rubes® comes to library
Reading. It’s a group thing – at least in February, when thousands of Kansans will pick up a book and immerse themselves in literature. Kansas Reads, a statewide adult reading program, begins Jan. 29 (Kansas’ birthday) and ends March 15. “When people of various backgrounds are reading the same thing, it brings them together to meet and celebrate reading,” said Marie Pyko, public services manager. “It opens up a dialogue to talk about topics that you wouldn’t normally.”
In February, let us hear your voice as we explore excellence in literature through Kansas Reads and Black History Month. A read-in, where library staff and patrons read their favorite African-American authors, is scheduled for Feb. 20 for children and Feb. 21 for adults. For about two hours, individuals read poetry, short stories or excerpts from novels or nonfiction works.

This year’s Kansas Reads book is Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance by Barack Obama. This nonfiction, nonpolitical memoir is about Obama’s life without his father and includes themes of African-American roots, genealogy and father-son relationships. If you would like to lead a book discussion, we have ready-to-use Dreams From My Father “Book Group in a Bag” kits available. Kansas Reads is an initiative of the State Library of Kansas and the Kansas Center for the Book. Each year, librarians from across the state, select a book for Kansas Reads. “What we are trying to do is create a connection between individuals and AfricanAmerican culture,” Pyko said. Many of our February programs have ties to the African-American community or culture. On Feb. 10, University of Kansas Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little, the first African-American chancellor of KU, will speak at the library about her hopes and dreams for young college students. The speech is free and open to the public. Other programs: African-American Genealogy Feb. 6 and African-American Writers Book Discussion Feb. 17.

This tax season comes with change Paper copies of Kansas tax forms and instructions will not be available at the library this tax season because the Kansas Department of Revenue is not distributing them, opting instead to encourage Kansans to go online for instructions and to file electronically. The department estimates this will save $450,000 in printing and personnel costs. Kansans can get information at www.ksrevenue.org/index.htm. The library will still have copies of the federal tax forms. And, the library will continue serving as a site for free tax preparation for low- to moderate-income returns. Hours for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program are Tuesday 6-8:30 pm, Thursday 3-8:30pm and Saturday 1-4 pm, starting Tue., Feb. 2. VITA appointments are first-come, firstserved. Sign-up starts one hour before VITA opens. Several Topeka locations have VITA sites. Call 1-800-829-1040 for a VITA site nearest to you.
Items you need to bring to VITA sites include Proof of identification Social Security cards for you, your spouse and any dependents Birth dates for you, your spouse and any dependents Wage and earning statement(s), usually a W-2 form, from all employers Interest and dividend statements from your banks (1099 form) Bank routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit For a complete checklist of what to do before you go to a VITA site, log on to http://www.irs.gov/individuals/ article/0,,id=107626,00.html If you do not have a computer to access this information, use your library card to access time on one of the library’s computers. The library also has private study rooms, with computers, for people filing their own tax returns.
