eachers, pass the baton. Parents, get ready for the summer sprint. You can do it!

Amid your heroic (and sometimes exhausting) summertime acrobatics – ferrying children to camps, campouts, waterpark forays and endless play dates – you’re going to find moments of pure unadulterated silence. We promise. You only have to do one thing: Put books in your child’s hands. Those scarce and coveted moments of P & Q? They’re brought to you by Books. That mildly suspicious silence you detect? For once, it doesn’t spell trouble. It’s actually the sound of your child’s imagination working overtime. It’s the crackle and pop of all those slack electrical lines in their brains growing taut and muscular as Batman’s bicep.

Parent, you’re the reading superhero. The library is your sidekick. We can join forces to battle boredom this summer. Here’s how: 1. Register yourself and your child for Summerfest, the library’s reading challenge. Go to summerfest.tscpl.org and follow the simple steps. Once you’re in, get to our catalog and get your mitts on some books! 2. Use our fun reading trackers to log your reading hours. You can do it online or on the fridge or carve notches into your bedpost – whatever floats your family’s boat. Super readers can win gift certificates for ice cream, cool hero swag or even an ereader. 3. Rejoice! You’ve made it through summer. Your kids are whipsmart and bursting with those reading muscles they’ll need to flex in the coming school year.

Caleb

We’ll let you take all the credit, no biggie. That’s what sidekicks do!

are still staggeringly high and they were the eighth most streamed band of the last decade. So what is it about the Fab Four that makes them endure in the entertainment landscape? Krerowicz will hold forth on the genius behind the legendary group. Krerowicz holds a masters degree in music and won a grant to research the band. He’s presented his findings to more than 100 groups, and his book, The Beatles and The Avant-Garde, was published in 2014. Beatlemania will come to life in his multi-media presentation, The Beatles: Band of the Sixties. ummer is a hectic time for superheroes. The kids are out of school and out on the streets, so it’s more important than ever to keep the community safe. On top of that, summer is usually full of new superhero movie premiers. While you wait for the release of your favorite superhero movie, come to the library to check out your favorites or see a film on our big screen at one of this summer's superhero showings (see page 13 for full schedule).

History Neighborhood Maximo

H

istory shows us where we've been and, sometimes, where we're going. Now, the library can quickly show you the history you seek.

In the new history neighborhood, signs and shelf guides will highlight and divvy up segments of history. This makes it easier to complete research and browse through topics of personal interest.

TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS

The history neighborhood is supported by the Redbud Foundation, created by Glenn and Claire Swogger. They've made donations to the library in the past, including the gift that led to the Millennium Café's name. Glen Swogger loves history, and the Foundation’s underwriting of the neighborhood will ensure the availability of the subject to other history buffs. 5

Put books in their hands & hearts W

e grew up in the summer. The legs we kicked in the deep end of the parks ’n rec pool grew interminably longer. The sun tinted our hair and summoned hidden freckles. We discovered creek beds and lots we never knew existed, and the hair on our necks stood in revelation that the world was impossibly huge. Opportunities were myriad and our lives were books yet to be written. In the summer we didn’t just grow physically and emotionally. If we were lucky, we spent deliciously air-conditioned afternoons at the nearest library. We slipped into the skin of our imaginary friends, the protagonists of chapter books. We became the observant Harriet the Spy, the orphaned Boxcar Child, the awkward Harry Potter. And so we grew into readers. We grew up. Now we’ve got our own dirty-kneed, school-aged kids to fend with in the summer and to watch in slight astonishment as they, too, grow faster than a dandelion patch. Put books in their hands and hearts this summer and watch them grow into lifelong readers.

KEEP BOOKS AROUND. LEAD BY EXAMPLE. READ.

Get caught reading and they’ll imitate you. Your child looks up to you.

Idle hands will pick up a book if it’s lying around. Just watch.

READ ALOUD. HELP KIDS FIND TIME TO READ. Just like in the school year, set aside twenty minutes a day for reading.

Pick out a book you can read together and take turns reading aloud.
