Mix your next reading list Sometimes judging a book by the cover does not work out. If you're wondering what to read next, we’ve got a smooth online tool that makes finding your next read a breeze. Instead of random browsing, go to tscpl.org, click the “Research It” tab and then select NoveList Plus to search a huge selection of book titles using your personal reading preferences. Read-alikes You just finished an amazing book and you want to read more like it. NoveList Plus makes this so easy by showing you read-alikes. For practice let’s go to the NoveList Plus home page and look for The Rooster Bar, John Grisham’s latest legal thriller, by typing it into the search box. When the book page comes up, you’ll see suggested legal thrillers under read-alikes on the right. Click on these titles for a preview and spot-on reviews. When you find something that piques your interest, search for those titles at catalog.tscpl.org to see if we have them in print, ebook or audiobook. Author read-alikes Author read-alikes focus on writing style. Using the same basic search for The Rooster Bar, click on the author’s name (Grisham, John) and look on the right side for author read-alikes. David Baldacci appears as an author you might enjoy because his stories are often fast-paced, dramatic and suspenseful–similar pace and tone as Grisham's novels. Appeal factor If you’re looking for a quick fun read with quirky characters, go to the “browse by” tab on the NoveList Plus home page and click the “appeal” option. Select “fast-paced” for the pace, “funny” for tone and “quirky” for the character to retrieve recommendations including titles by Meg Cabot, Lisa Lutz and Graeme Simsion.

tool to find reading level is a Lexile rating, a measurement of the book’s readability or how difficult a book is to understand. In NoveList Plus, start by searching for a book your child enjoyed to see if it has a Lexile rating. Then go to the home page and use “advanced search” to find other books using that Lexile score or in that Lexile range (find these options under the “limit your results” section of the advanced search). TRY A SALAD up the c rowd

Storytellers shine on stage “Story slams encourage the ordinary person to tell a story.”

– Edie Snethen

Topeka story slam proponent The room is full with a quiet crowd eager for a good story. Will the next story be funny, heartwarming, sad or some combination? This is the scene at a story slam. A story slam is a live storytelling competition in which individuals tell personal true stories based on a preselected theme. Hearing and/or telling stories live is a great way to connect to people without a screen as a barrier. These stories give us a peek at the awkward, hilarious, heartbreaking and uplifting moments in other people’s lives. “Listening to storytelling is a more personal and intimate experience than watching a performance,” said Kay Duganator, Topeka story slam host.

With the popularity of The Moth, a podcast that plays stories from story slams around the world, story slams are popping up all over including Topeka. Most storytellers and listeners are more interested in the personal revelations than the competition part of the story slam. It’s about hearing interesting, surprising and entertaining tales of individual experiences.

Your next opportunity to attend a local story slam is the NOTO Story Slam on June 1, 7-9pm, NOTO Arts Place, 905 N Kansas. Listen to or be one of 10 people who each tell a 5-minute story on the theme of summer. The audience will award a cash prize to the best story based on quality and presentation. Sign up to be a storyteller begins at 6:30pm. Kay Duganator and Matt Spezia are the slam hosts. Edie and Don Snethen planted the seed for a Topeka story slam and are graciously providing space for the event at their venue, NOTO Arts Place.

Duganator said story slams open up the stage for more people because everyone has a story to tell. Her advice for first time storytellers at a slam is to really think about the night’s theme and pick something they’re passionate about. At our first Topeka story slam in April the theme was firsts and people told stories about first jobs, love, friendship, trips and school pranks. “Story slams encourage the ordinary person to tell a story,” said Edie Snethen, Topeka story slam proponent. “You don’t need to be a published author or professional storyteller. Our goal is to provide a venue where personal stories can be told and listened to. Every storyteller needs an audience.”

Sounds Like Art! Science: May 27 - June 2 & July 8-14 That eerie sound in the Star Trek theme song is made by a theremin, which you play by manipulating electric signals without touching it. Other bizarre sounds are made with a Chladni plate, which involves sand, a metal plate and a bow. Try both these experimental instruments.

Experience how art and music overlap, connect and influence each other. See, touch and play music in the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery during the Sounds Like Art! exhibit May 25 – Aug 19.

We’ll help you find a great read or the answer to your question.

Investigate how instruments work by examining the parts and pieces of a ukulele, flute and trumpet. It’s pretty amazing how all those pieces work together to make music. Wonder at the artwork inspired by music including art made from a trumpet.

Technology: June 3-9 & July 15-21 Be a DJ and mix sounds using digital equipment to create a unique song. Reading: June 10-16 & July 22-28 If you’re dreaming of being a rock star, get an introduction to reading music so you’ll be ready to play your solo.

Imagine your screaming fans as you play guitar, drums and trumpet on a digital app on iPads in the gallery. Bring a couple friends and you’ve got a band. You can also play a ukulele, a giant xylophone, horns and a lap harp in the gallery. Make your own pan-pipes to take home.

Engineering: June 17-23 & July 29-Aug 4 Perhaps you can make a three-nozzled bloozer or a hinkle horn when you make your own Seussical musical instrument.

Every week we’ll have a different STREAM activity in the gallery.

Your name or message can be set in stone in the amphitheater of Claire’s Courtyard, with construction set to begin later this year on the west side of the library. This new outdoor space will also offer visitors al fresco dining and a pavilion for library events. Claire’s Courtyard is funded by a gift from Dr. Glenn Swogger and is named after his beloved late wife Claire. Be a part of Claire’s Courtyard when you purchase a 4” x 8” brick with two lines of engraving for $75 or increase to a larger 8” x 8” brick to add up to four lines of engraving for only $125. There is no limit to the number of bricks you may purchase.

An engraved brick is a perfect way to honor loved ones, or remember family and friends. The commemorative bricks will be set in Claire’s Courtyard amphitheater seating area. Funds will provide furnishings for this new area. “I will delight in the public being included in the building of Claire’s Courtyard,” said Dr. Swogger. “I believe this outdoor space at the library will be enjoyed by so many and adding the commemorative bricks will make it extra special.” Place your order online at foundation.tscpl.org or mail a form provided at the library’s information desk to The Library Foundation. Counting the stars

You don’t have to go far to see one of the best shows in the universe. As a matter of fact you can see it from your own backyard. Summer is our favorite time to go stargazing. Stargazing is all about preparation and knowing what to look for. Check out the space section in the kid’s library.

Monday Farmers Market

We have books about the moon, planets, stars, galaxies and space travel.

"...We’ll be counting stars; Yea, we’ll be counting stars.” –OneRepublic, 2013

Astronomy for All Ages are stellar books for every backyard astronomer. Within the books you can find a star map of the constellations for all four seasons. VanCleave also shows you how to make a star disk that can track star movements, create a star dome or a shoebox planetarium. Harrington helps you determine the brightness and size of a star, and he gives you tips on how to build your own telescope.

June 27 | Saturn at Opposition Earth comes in between the sun and Saturn. The ringed planet will be at its closest distance to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the sun. Saturn will be brighter than any other time of the year and visible all night long with the naked eye. A mediumsized telescope or larger will allow you to see its rings and a few of its brightest moons.

Once you become an expert backyard astronomer you might start to wonder what it takes to become an astronaut. Ryan Nagelhout’s book Astronauts talks about the many ways astronauts use science, technology, engineering and math to do their job.

August 12-13 | Perseids Meteor Shower This is one of the most anticipated meteor showers of the year. It produces up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak and will overlap with the Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower. Expect to see meteors flying from two different directions in the sky.

July 12 | Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation Mercury will be shining bright at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky. Usually Mercury is difficult to observe because its orbit is closer to the sun than Earth's.

Here are some celestial events to look forward to this summer.

“Kids from all around Topeka are in the library during the summer and often they’re hungry. Now they have a healthy option so they won’t be going home hungry,” said library public services director Marie Pyko.

While other sites around Topeka offer free summer meals for children, the library is unique because of the Millennium Café on site. The food served here is fresh and hot. If you’re ever in line and we run out of food, don’t worry, we’ll pass out coupons that can be used at the café for a free meal within that lunch hour. On July 6 celebrate food, summer learning and fun at the Spike event for the Shawnee County Summer Meal program. Enjoy fun games, activities and book giveaways 11am - 1pm. Harvesters, Topeka Public Schools, United Way of Greater Topeka, Kansas Appleseed, and Boys and Girls Club are partnering with the library on this event.
