f your kids' grades start sliding in school, you sit up and take notice. In the summer, it's harder to realize when reading skills are evaporating. Make reading a team effort this summer and beat the summer slide with fun, games, prizes and (shhh!) learning. On your mark, get set...read! Here's how to do it: Go to summerfest.tscpl.org and sign up for summer reading. •
• •
Get your family into a huddle. Lay a pep talk on 'em. Go directly to the nearest bookmobile stop, visit the digital library at tscpl.org or come down to the library where all the action is. Stock up! Start reading! Come back for more. For prizes and bragging rights, enter your reading hours online. Collect prizes along the way. When you finish the whole program, you're entered to win the BIG prizes.
No, really. That's it. And it only takes 20 minutes a day to stay on track. That's how you beat the summer slide and simultaneously find a quick solution for that worn out old summertime song: "I'm borrrrred!" The library has a whole series of fun reading events to rescue your efforts if they start to wane, oh, about mid-July. You can wade out of that heat-haze into the sweet AC at the library. Rack up some reading hours with Readapalooza or Stories and Crafts. On Blockbuster Wednesdays, new performers entice kids into the library for laughter, dancing and lots of checkouts. See pages 12-13 for a full schedule of Wednesday antics. And, remember, the library is on your team! Hit us up at Instagram or Twitter (@topekalibrary) for instant feedback and virtual high fives.

Get a library card Your library is both a physical place and a digital space. You can access each with your card. It’s your key to entertainment, information, resources and tools you can utilize to enrich your life. Your library card gives you access to a massive collection of books, of course. But it’s also your portal to media, technology and movies. With your card, you can gather the materials that help you learn, play and laugh. Your library card is small, but it is mighty. Smart, easy checkouts
Life gets in the way of visiting the library. We get it. But then again, the library has been mastering the art of the "life hack" well before the term even existed.
Aptly named "Smartlockers," they're an in-your-neighborhood delivery site at Oakland Community Center (801 N.E. Poplar) and Hy-Vee Grocery Store (2951 S.W. Wanamaker).
That's why it should come as no surprise that the library operates two self-operated kiosks, like lockers for the delivery of your favorite books and media.
Visit catalog.tscpl.org, make your selections, and choose the closest Smartlocker to you when placing holds. We'll be in touch soon to let you know when to pick up your stuff.
When you add a bundle of books to your grocery cart or swing by Oakland for a quick pickup, you can actually feel yourself growing smarter. We did mention that Smartlockers are aptly named.

right away. That's a great first step in growing lifelong readers. In 2015, the IREAD program reached out to Stout, McCarter and Meadows Elementary schools. And in 2016, even more schools will become IREAD schools, including Williams, Scott, Ross and State Street Schools. 6

WHERE YOUR LIBRARIAN UNLEASHES THE INNER BOOK NERD
I
n his new collection, Odd Evening, Eric McHenry invites readers to “come take a spacewalk through / the orbit of [his] stuffy head.”* In these poems, scenes unfold with clear images, delivered in metered phrases and easy rhyme. Spoken in a voice both wry and poignant, they reveal the world in an uncanny light, as if seen through “sun-puzzled glass.” Pour Your Soul by Mira Ptacin In this beautifully crafted memoir, Mira Ptacin learns that her unborn baby will certainly die. She must choose between terminating the pregnancy, miscarrying or delivering the baby early. Mira’s mother, an opinionated Polish immigrant with a strong work ethic and endearing English learned from soap operas, provides loving support and wise counsel as she, too, lost a beloved child. There is heartbreaking loss in their interwoven stories but also lessons about courage, resilience and survival. — Julie Nelson, author of Lost in the Stacks, tscpl.org
Imagine summer cicadas as “new neighbors whose lives are porn, / drone metal and unlicensed flying,” an existence completely understandable for those who are “born /seventeen and dying.” Consider the baseball as “the only egg / horses and men would ever put together,” flying through the air toward the bat, as it “longs to shatter.” Stand with an unresponsive first responder at the scene of an accident. Experience fall leaves through color-blind eyes. Tour a historical neighborhood, once lovely, noting the details of decline.
Finding Wild by Megan Wagner Lloyd (ages 3-7) Lloyd's sparkling debut celebrates nature through a whimsical meditation on the idea of wildness. After entering a verdant city park, a boy and girl become immersed in the sights, sounds, smells, and feel of their surroundings, which spring to life in Halpin's lush and delicately detailed mixed-media pictures.— Publishers Weekly
Odd Evening includes brave, honest poems that turn a critical eye inward on good intentions and white privilege. “Transaction,”“The Pass-Through” and “Randy Used the Word” are spoken by a narrator who presses his “freckled nose” against the “frosted glass” between himself and people of color, a white man who yearns to go beyond transaction to brotherhood, though he does not always know how. He means to be the sort of man who, after hearing “the word” dropped casually during a haircut, “will walk/out of some barbershops with his hair half-cut” in protest. He falls short at times, and calls himself on it, reminding us all (‘America, and I’m about to talk / directly to the Eric in you’) to reflect on who we mean to be, so that we can rise up when called upon. McHenry’s poems, in their beauty and humor, “retrieve a pang / so imprecise it’s briefly everything.” For a time you’ll see your world from the poet’s keen, wit-slanted point of view—and it might change the way that you see for good.
Maestra by L.S. Hilton With the cunning of Gone Girl‘s Amy Dunne, and as dangerous as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo‘s Lisbeth Salander, the femme fatale of this new thriller is sexy, smart and very, very bad in all the best ways. Judith Rashleigh is an assistant at a top London art auction house and as a hostess at a seedy nightclub where she moonlights. But a mark she hooks at the club—middle-aged, married and morbidly obese James—proves to be her ticket to the Riviera. Optioned by Sony Pictures, this hot title has already sold rights in more than 25 countries. This one is going to be a big deal. — Jennifer Jones, author, Fiction 5, tscpl.org
Eric McHenry currently serves as the Poet Laureate of Kansas, and teaches creative writing at Washburn University. He is a native of Topeka, and a fifth generation graduate of Topeka High School. On his connection with Topeka, he says, “I am of Topeka, and I have a hard time talking about what that means, for the same reason that a bird has a hard time describing the sky.” McHenry is a winner of the Academy of American Poets Prize, as well as a Theodore Roethke Prize. His first collection of poetry, Potscrubber Lullabies, won the Kate Tufts Discovery Award in 2007. Odd Evening is his first full length collection in ten years—and it’s well worth the wait.

Every Exquisite Thing by Matthew Quick Real. That’s what this book is. A coming of age tale of Salinger proportions, Every Exquisite Thing by Matthew Quick will leave you contemplating what is normal, what is rebellion and what is the true self. Philosophical, relatable, real and exceptionally written. Nanette is that high school student who has it all – good grades, athletic skills, and popularity, but she starts to think about her life differently when her teacher introduces her to an out-of-print cult classic. This changes her whole view on life, causing her to forge new friendships, rebel, and to find her true self. But will it all come at too high a cost? — Becca Paquette, teen librarian

Reading to win at Summerfest We're actually going to do it this summer! My family likes to read (especially Mom), but sometimes we get too busy in the summer and forget. This summer, we've decided to take the library's Summerfest challenge and actually do it.
Evan
Everyone's reading. Dad, Mom, my brother and I are all doing Summerfest. And my friend, Miles, who thinks he can beat me to the finish line. I don't think so, dude.
Miles
Bill
When my friends and I are bored, we can go to the library. It's really busy there in the summer. We always run into friends or find something cool happening. The librarians help me find books I actually like. Kaylynn
First things first. I'm going to sign up at summerfest.tscpl.org, which is really easy. That's how you earn prizes from the library. But it's not only about the prizes. It's also about the look on Miles's face when I finish first.
We'll keep track. We each have a reading tracker on the fridge and at dinner time, we talk about what we've read.

Find inspiration Wandering through the library's Arts & Crafts Neighborhood can be food for the soul. Getting creative is not only good for the soul, it's good for your health, too! Creating has effects similar to meditation, and can help people who suffer from anxiety, depression or chronic pain. Creative activities may also help protect the brain against aging.
don’t have to be a serious artist to benefit from expressing yourself creatively. Pretty much any kind of creative endeavor is good. What you are looking for is either an activity that engages your mind to the extent that you lose track of time – or an activity that is repetitive and relaxing. Simply knitting or stitching will do the trick. Many people enjoy Zentangle or adult coloring books for
their relaxing, meditative qualities. And there's nothing like that wonderful feeling you get when you make something that you just love! Visit the Arts & Crafts Neighborhood in the library's West Wing nonfiction area to access a direct portal to Inspiration Lane. It's where you can find books, arts and craft kits and knowledgeable
librarians who can get you pointed down the path toward your next creative obsession. One more word of advice: remember to go easy on your expectations. While it's lovely to finish projects and get results you like, remember that the process of creating is the best part. — Jill Zinn, author, Artsy Crafty Library, tscpl.org
