ummerFest 2013 is going below the surface to give you events and experiences you can really dig into. Summer is a great time for everyone to enjoy reading and to earn rewards for your efforts. The challenge encourages reading at least 12 hours and offers kids a prize for every two hours read. Read and win a book of your choice, provided by the Friends of the Library. Keep reading and win even more by impressing your teacher with your reading skills.
track your reading, register at summerfest. tscpl.org or pick up a paper tracker at the library. Unearthed, the 12th annual art exhibit for children in the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery, has creepy-crawly creatures you will really dig. Creations in glass, art made from real bugs, and super-sized mechanical creatures will infest your imagination.
Adults need to read eight books to be part of weekly drawings. Every reader completing the reading challenge is eligible for grand prize drawings. To

Faster Wi-fi is here Ziiiiiippp! Did you miss it?! In case you hadn’t noticed, online gaming, shopping and reading experiences at the library happen quicker these days. That’s good news for the growing number of customers using smartphones, ereaders, laptops and tablets to read, communicate and do business at the library. The library’s wi-fi works at lightening-quick speeds thanks to increased bandwidth and the installation of more wi-fi access points. The changes happened in April, just in time for our anticipated summer rush. So come in and connect. –David Lee King

Try the New Computers at the Community Centers
T
“The library has no branches, so this is a costeffective and innovative way to provide wider access to our collection and services while partnering with an entity that’s as committed as we are to creating a quality of life for our community,” said Thad Hartman, Community and Strategic Services Manager at the library.
New Computers are at these Topeka Community centers Central Park 1534 SW Clay St. 785-368-3796 Crestview 4801 SW Shunga Drive 785-368-2448
Users will be encouraged to log on with their library card. Those who do will be given one hour of time, compared to nonlibrary cardholders who will receive 30 minutes. Look for this partnership to bring new programs to a neighborhood near you. Working with Parks and Recreation, the library plans to develop new programs at these sites, including computer, life skills and children’s programs.
here’s another great reason to visit the community centers! You or your kids can play or work on the new touch-screen computers, thanks to a joint partnership between the library and Shawnee County Parks and Recreation.
Garfield 1600 NE Quincy St. 785-368-3787 Hillcrest 1800 SE 21st St. 785-368-3790 Oakland 801 NE Poplar St. 785-368-3793
The library and county are sharing an information technology employee whose salary and benefits are split between the two entities. For more information about the partnership and technology, call Thad at 580-4511.
The new PCs offer users free Internet, Microsoft Office, resume software, access to the library catalog and printing. Rice, Central Park, Garfield, Crestview, Hillcrest, and Oakland received new equipment in April. Shawnee North and Velma Paris Community Centers will be upgraded in 2014 after broadband Internet access is available at those sites.

How do I renew my library books online? Can you help me build a birdhouse? What is the phone number for that new pizza place? The title I’m looking for is not in your collection. Can you get it for me? Can you help me learn Spanish? Can you help me find recipes for our upcoming family reunion? What other movies has Emma Stone been in besides The Help? Fire away, answer-seekers! Our friendly librarians are standing by during library hours. Use our Ask a Librarian Service to find answers to your immediate questions. (It’s like 4-1-1.) Jalen O’Neil Lowry recommends the service to her friends. She talks about the excellent customer service she received, but is more impressed that librarians find her answers when Internet searches do not.
“My latest question was about receiving email alerts when my books are almost due, but I’ve asked questions ranging from what to buy to what a government official’s salary is,” she said. “‘I’ve always been treated politely and professionally.” Remember you can always ask us in person at the library, at a Bookmobile or at community events. For more in-depth research questions, schedule a one-on-one with a librarian through tscpl.org/consult-a-librarian.

WHY READ in the summer 20 = Kraus spearheaded the “iRead 20” reading program, which during the school year encourages students to read 20 minutes a day outside the classroom. The library’s reading time tracker is set to 20-minute reading intervals too.
READING
“Research indicates that 20 additional minutes of reading per day correlates with significant gains for all learners. However, any amount of additional time allocated to literacy proves beneficial at all levels,” Kraus said. “iRead 20 is our proactive approach to preparing students for more rigorous Common Core State Standards that will begin being assessed in the 2014-15 school year.”

It takes the whole community, and it will be better for the whole community because as studies show better readers are more civically engaged, Kraus said.

Our program has been set with vacation, ball games, swim lessons and lazy days in mind. It’s so easy to read this summer.
“It’s best to schedule it. Implement bedtime stories or some other story time and stick to it,” said Darcy Kraus, language arts consulting teacher at USD 501. “Use downtime to read. For instance, use your time with kids in the car to point out letters and words in the environment.”
