oss it in a pot and walk away. That’s the beauty of the slow-cooker. You’re able to maximize flavor without slaving over the stove, giving you more time with friends and family, more time to linger over a flavorful dinner and more time to snuggle under a cozy throw with a compelling book from the library. But too often, saving time comes with a price. With slow-cooker recipes, we tend to default to unhealthy and processed foods that, while comforting, can take a toll on
both your waistline and your energy levels. You know the ones - those tried and true recipes that call for a can of cream soup and a bag of frozen veggies. You can do better than that, and our librarians are here to help. Take a new approach to crockpot cooking this winter and visit the Cooking Neighborhood to catch a whiff of some delicious slowcooked recipes that won’t slow you down. Take advantage of the free time the slow-cooker provides to bookmark some great (and healthy!) creations that can only be found in our Cooking Neighborhood stacks.
Slow-Cooker tortillas con carne recipe Crockpots are considered by some die-hard foodies to be producers of sub-par fare, but that’s just snobbery! Slow-cooked foods can be gourmet, too. Famed New York foodie Deb Perelman discovered this after years of resisting the ease of the crockpot. Here’s an adaptation of one of Deb’s recipes that packs a whollop of flavor but requires very little labor. 3 lb beef brisket salt & pepper 2 T vegetable oil 4 cloves of garlic, peeled and smashed 1 medium onion, halved & sliced 1 T chili powder 2 t ground coriander 2 t ground cumin 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1/4 cup molasses 1 1/2 cups water 1 can whole tomatoes 2 bay leaves OPTIONAL: 1 pepper from a can of chipotle chiles in adobo sauce TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS
Season brisket with salt & pepper and heat oil in a skillet. Add brisket and turn to brown both sides. Transfer meat to slow-cooker. In the skillet, add garlic, onion, chili powder, coriander and cumin to the beef drippings. Stir until fragrant. Add vinegar and boil until almost evaporated. Stir in water and pour the mixture over the brisket. Add tomatoes, bay leaves and molasses. Add chipotle pepper if you choose. Cook on low for 8-10 hours until the brisket pulls apart with a fork. Serve shredded on tortillas with your choice of toppings - diced red onion, cilantro or salsa. Drizzle with lime juice.

little-known facts about Kansas Day
1 It was started by a teacher
L.G.A. Copley, a Kansas teacher, realized students were more interested in a history subject if it had occurred on that very day in history. In 1881, he urged schools across Kansas to adopt the celebration of Jan 29 as Kansas Day. It quickly caught on in schools across the state.
2 One group has been
throwing a party for over 100 years on Kansas Day The Kansas Day Club, a Republican party group founded in 1891, has held a celebration every year from 1892 – 2014, except in 1945 at the height of WWII.
3 It was a good day for Kansas, and Charles Curtis Kansas Day also commemorates the day Charles Curtis of Kansas became the first Native American U.S. senator. He went on to become the first Native American to hold the office of vice president to president Herbert Hoover.

BAG DAY BOOK SALE
New donor recognition displays were recently installed in the library’s rotunda hall to honor the 2001-2013 donors of $1,000 or more. Splashes of colorful leaves accent the donors names and reflect the original leaf motif designed by the library’s design architect Michael Graves, and the late Connie Menninger, a long-time volunteer. “Just as a tree requires a continuing source of sustenance to grow, so does the library. That was the concept behind the display,” said Nancy Lindberg, Foundation executive director. The display was designed by Connie Menninger and Michael Graves and Associates.

Stories on the go Outreach storytellers bring learning to pre-readers
T
he library’s storytellers are on-the-go.
Outreach storytellers visit kids in over 80 preschools across the area. Their message is simple: Reading is fun.
“Our goal is to show them that reading can be an adventure, and we sneak in a little learning that helps them get ready for kindergarten.” Kids see sight words and learn important skills like color and shape recognition. These are all elements that contribute to success in that crucial first year of school. Songs, books, action poems and props all factor into the fun. After storytime, each child gets a bright orange sticker with a picture of Boomer, storytime’s popular teddy bear mascot. The sticker is a talking point for parents to engage in a discussion about reading. “In most cases, these are kids that don’t get to the library. So we bring it to them.”

Saddle up...The BIG READ is Coming February 2015 The whole community will read the classic, True Grit, in Feb 2015. Attend one of many events centered around the book.
The Big Read is an effort to encourage our community to be productive, civically active and healthy. Good readers make that happen.
The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
