In our fast-paced society, there's very little time for self improvement. After long work hours away from home and family, it's easy to lose track of your personal goals. And too easy to flop on the sofa, cruise the Internet and spoon-feed yourself Nutella straight from the jar.

Get a library card Your library is both a physical place and a digital space. You can access each with your card. It’s your key to entertainment, information, resources and tools you can utilize to enrich your life. Your library card gives you access to a massive collection of books, of course. But it’s also your portal to media, technology and movies. With your card, you can gather the materials that help you learn, play and laugh.
Get organized It keeps piling up. The bills, the clutter, the errands and the kids' homework folders. Yikes, things can certainly get out of hand. Resolve to wipe the slate clean and tackle your whole-life organization with books from our Home Neighborhood.
Be less stressed Get fit
Can't afford to purchase a gym membership? That's no longer an excuse.
Eat healthy
Your library card is small, but it is mighty.
Cook at home. We have all the healthy recipes you could ever need.
Get your card at tscpl.org/librarycard.
I'm in the midst of an at-home cardio workout, prickling sweat running down my back, the dog whining at me from the corner (Why, human, are you flailing your limbs around like that?), and my muscles scream at me to stop moving.
Questions? Ask a librarian.
But Jillian Michaels, my torturer and professional "shredder," eggs me on from the TV screen: "You showed up. You bought this DVD. You're already on your way to getting fit."

All of that was true except that I didn't buy the DVD. I borrowed it from my library. Ha! Take that, Jillian.
Jillian Michaels, of Biggest Loser fame, is a notoriously tough trainer. You can bring her home with you from the library when you check out a fitness DVD.

It's really easy to get free fitness materials at the library. So if you find Jillian a little, er, aggressive, you can move on to a more soothing workout, or check out a resistance cord kit and do some low-key exercise while you rewatch a favorite movie. The library has 13 different fitness kits to check out in our Health Neighborhood and hundreds of fitness DVDs. The library also has a bounty of healthy recipes for you to cook at home. That's the ticket to getting fit. Eat as healthy as possible, and exercise (even begrudging exercise still counts as exercise). Jillian would be proud. DECEMBER 2015-JANUARY 2016
Try storytime for teens. Really. Bedtime: pajamas on, teeth brushed, we gather for stories. Instead of small bodies snuggling and a stack of picture books, hairy legs sprawl on too-small twin beds as we continue our journey with Lewis and Clark up the Missouri in Stephen Ambrose’s Undaunted Courage. Welcome to teenage story time. Reading aloud to your children has many benefits, and that goes for older kids as well. The Children’s Book Committee says that reading aloud with teenagers will “build background knowledge, increase vocabulary and make more meaningful connections to
thoughts and ideas as well as associate reading with pleasure.” What studies can’t quantify is how pleasurable reading aloud can be for the adult as well. Not only is it a relaxing ritual for all of us at the end of the day, but I’ve also loved sharing some of my favorite books with my kids. Here are my tips for keeping your teens engaged and eager for “storytime": 1. Know your material. Nothing is more mortifying than coming upon words or scenes that you aren’t comfortable reading aloud.
Spend more time with family
dbryan@tscpl.org 2. Try voices. I’ve had a lot of fun over the years using different accents and dialects. Of course my Monsieur Poirot is tres horrible and my faux British accent not much better, but my kids are very forgiving. 3. Have fun. Let’s face it, some perfectly marvelous books just don’t lend themselves to being read aloud. If it’s a slog for you to read and the kids are dozing off, set it aside and choose something else. There are plenty of other books in the library! — Julie Nelson, author of Lost in the Stacks, tscpl.org

A new year is a good time to reflect on your travel goals. What influences your decision to choose one place or experience over another? What's on your travel bucket list? Several years ago, I read Jill Fredston’s Rowing to Latitude: Journeys Along the Arctic’s Edge and vowed to explore the far north. At the same time I revisited Barry Lopez’s Arctic Dreams and later discovered Nick Jans’ essays about living in Alaska. The cumulative effect of reading these stories was an intense desire to experience Alaska. It moved to the top of my travel list. Five years later, a flight into Anchorage to explore the magnificent Kenai peninsula kicked off this dream vacation. The bonus was the decision to roadtrip northward into the interior to see Denali, cross the Yukon on the incomparable Dalton Highway and enter the Brooks Range—the wilderness I had read so much about. What’s next? Richard Preston’s The Wild Trees: A Story of Passion and Daring has inspired a trip to Northern California and Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park to stand beneath the canopies of the world’s tallest trees.
If you’re into planning ahead or curious to learn more about what’s out there to explore, remember the Travel Neighborhood where memoirs, essays, travel bags, foreign language phrasebooks, DVDs and hundreds of guidebooks can be checked out free for three weeks. —Kim Sain, Travel Librarian

Those who lead, read
February read
Dr. David W. Carter, Farley Visiting Professor of Ethics and Leadership
"Bookworm," "bibliophile" and "book nerd"aren't exactly terms synonymous with "leader." But an exciting new book series coming to the library this February is out to prove that a leader must first be a reader. Dr. David W. Carter, Farley Visiting Professor of Ethics and Leadership, presents "Those Who Lead, Read" Thursdays in 2016 for Washburn students and the public. Dr. Carter points to the intersection of people in leadership positions and steady readers. "If you want to lead in today's society, reading is not optional. It's mandatory," he says.
characteristic of our greatest leaders and can catalyze insight, innovation, empathy and personal effectiveness."
The series will feature area leaders, CEOs and influencers, who will highlight a single favorite book and discuss its relationship to leadership development.
Come learn about literacy and leadership in the "Those Who Lead, Read" series, open to the public. The first session begins 7 p.m. Thurs. Feb. 25 with I Am Malala, the autobiography of Malala Yousafzai.
These won't be guides for business executives, but will feature genres from literary fiction to children's books. "We all have a quirky book or a book outside of the norm that influenced us," says Dr. Carter. "We want to show participants that some of our leaders today are reading things you would not expect."

THE LIBRARY FOUNDATION
Help children learn to read Make a gift and help children learn to read. In a multitude of ways, day in and day out, the library helps thousands of children learn to read. In fact, we've officially adopted the community mission, “every child in our community will be ready for kindergarten." We tirelessly pursue that goal. The Library Foundation is making that mission a reality by raising funds in its annual campaign this November. This year, we hone in on early childhood literacy and our ongoing commitment to get kids acquainted with reading in those crucial first years.
Exciting things are coming for Shawnee County children, and you can help usher in this brighter future. A mobile early childhood learning center will travel throughout the community, bringing an interactive play-based environment to those impressionable minds right where they live. Its colorful, hands-on learning center will cultivate the most essential skills necessary for school readiness.

Girl in the Woods, by Aspen Matis For those who like their trail narratives with a hefty dollop of introspection, Aspen Matis’s absorbing memoir Girl in the Woods is just the thing. Traumatized by a college rape and emotionally crippled by an overly-loving mother, the vulnerable 19-year-old decided that hiking the Pacific Crest Trail alone could be both healing and transformative. Strapping on her tiny lime-green backpack and calling herself “Wild Child”, Aspen began her 2,650 mile journey of empowerment. – Julie Nelson, author of Lost in the Stacks, tscpl.org
Son of the Black Sword, by Larry Correia Hundreds of years ago, demons arrived and nearly drove humanity to extinction. Saved by the hero Ramrowan, the survivors formed a strict caste system, with laws enforced by elite warriors like Ashok. When events cause Ashok to learn that his entire life has been based on a lie, he turns his immense power, skill and his legendary sword toward creating a new world. — Jennifer Jones, author of Fiction 5, tscpl.org

artender Charmaine and unemployed Stan are a married couple living in their car following America's economic collapse in Margaret Atwood's long-awaited stand alone novel, The Heart Goes Last. They eke out a fitful existence marked by dumpster dives and fending off vagrants and would-be rapists. Their intermarital dealings are shot through with tension and irritability. But who wouldn't be stressed and irritable when everywhere they look, the country is crumbling into ruin and falling victim to crime, disorder and desperation? Charmaine spots a solution in a commercial for the close-gated community called Positron / Concilience. It's a chance at a new life — complete with square meals, shelter, middle-class comfort and flushing toilets. The only catch is that Charmaine and Stan have to alternate suburban life for prison life every other month. That means sharing house with "alternates" - an unseen couple who occupies the home in their stead. When the couple's vanilla existence grows wearisome, they each become erotically enamored with their "alternate," and the story soon spirals into dystopian territory. Prison inmates disappear under sinister circumstances and the less-than-idyllic, disturbing details of their new life becomes apparent to both Charmaine and Stan as they take turns narrating their story. I'm a die-hard Atwood fan. One of my most hallowed book experiences was reading the celebrated Canadian author's novel Cat's Eye as a young woman. I followed her lead into the dystopian genre by binge-reading the MaddAddam trilogy, a series that I pined for from the moment I finished it and sent it sadly down the conveyor belt of the book return drop. I was rabid for her new release. So, why did I have such a hard time slogging through it? The Heart Goes Last was, admittedly, entertaining. It's zany. It's unpredictable. It's ... kinda gross. Characters do things I wish they wouldn't. They have bizarre and painstakingly-described sex. They eat questionable food. They dress up like Elvis and "Green Man Group" characters, pop pills, fall in love with waxy-eyed teddy bears and the list goes on. I know, in retrospect, that Atwood was trying to be funny and satirical with her way-out plot, but, for me, it didn't quite hit the funny bone so much as the gag reflex. I heard that this book started out as a serial, and I wonder if, in the process of shaping it into a novel, Atwood lost some of that original umph. To be fair, the story is complex in at least one way, which redeems the novel slightly. Atwood sets the story in a plausible scenario. What if — the reader often wonders — the economic devastation we see in the novel isn't that far off from reality (pssst, anyone remember 2008)? And Atwood's commentary on the unquenchable greed of corporations, while obviously hyperbolic, does sort of smack of the truth. The corporate greedies of the novel aren't above selling baby blood for a profit. That's a bit over the top, right? But the corporations of reality make the news daily for environmental and human rights violations. Atwood's version of that reality is just a touch more hysterical. Atwood warns, Yes, indeed, this could be us if we're not careful. The raunchy humor doesn't serve the purpose of that message in the least. The characters aren't terribly likeable (consider the human resources employee with a botched face job who resorts to brain mutilation to win over the object of her affection). Perhaps I would've found the book more palatable if the following two things had been revealed to me beforehand: 1) Don't expect an Atwood masterpiece like MaddAddam and 2) The Heart Goes Last is silliness. Leave your intellect at the door and you might just enjoy yourself. — Leah Sewell, communications editor

When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead In this Newbery award winner, sixth-grader Miranda is losing her best friend, making new friends, dealing with the crazy man on her New York City corner, and helping her mom play on TV’s $20,000 Pyramid. Throw in a mysterious boy at school and some time travel, and Miranda has her hands full. A dramatic, adventurous, growing up tale that references Madeline L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time. — Jason Lamb, tween librarian
Goodbye, Stranger, by Rebecca Stead This coming-of-age tale follows three best friends, a boy who might be more than a friend and a mysterious girl hiding in plain sight. With short chapters, this book keeps you wanting more as you delve into the, at times, unbearably realistic world every teen encounters as they learn who they are and what they stand for. Hot off the press and wonderfully good, this book is certain to be up for many awards. — Becca Paquette, teen librarian
