Russ Cobb downloads audiobooks
The story of how 3 Topeka peeps don't come to the library, they download instead Let us introduce you to three library "power users" who don't have to come to the library to get books because they're so savvy about our downloads. Andrea Hillebert is the principal of Mater Dei School, just blocks from the library on 10th Ave. But she doesn't actually have to come to the library to get what she wants. "The library is a treasure!" she declares if you ask her about it. She never leaves home without her tablet, which is loaded with the OverDrive app and thousands of ebooks to choose from.
Russ Cobb does a lot of driving through Topeka to meet with clients. His schedule consists of meetings, networking breakfasts and attending his daughter's volleyball games. He doesn't really have time to come to the library. Luckily, he doesn't have to come to the library to check out books.
He's an avid consumer of graphic novels and comic books, and discovered that he could binge-read whole series on Hoopla without having to run out on his family or freelance duties.
"While I'm traveling, I listen to business books in the car," he says, and adds that he typically reads for pleasure on his iPad when he's at home.
When you download books, you can come to the library, whenever and wherever you want.
"It has a great selection from most of the major publishers," says Rob.

Architect's rendering of Cyrus Hotel & Holliday Public House
Researching in the Topeka Room
Making history new T
his past fall, the city was abuzz with the news of a boutique hotel opening up in downtown in 2017. Named for City of Topeka founder, Cyrus K. Holliday, the Cyrus Hotel and Holliday Public House will span across the former storefronts of 912-920 Kansas Avenue. Edie Smith, director of marketing and membership at Downtown Topeka, Inc., says that the buildings are part of the South Kansas Avenue Commercial Historic District, and that the developer plans to maintain some of the buildings' historical character. With a wealth of local history resources available to me in the Topeka Room on the library's second floor, I was able to locate a few snapshots in history of the commercial properties once housed in 912-920 Kansas Avenue and now slated to take on new lives as the Cyrus Hotel.

How I dug up the history of businesses that thrived on the 900 block of Kansas Avenue in the 1920s. Within the cozy capsule of the Topeka Room, I located the library's collection of city directories. I searched by street name in the 1920s, when most storefronts on Kansas Avenue were brimming with life and commerce.
able to sense that history, the lives played out – small business owners spending late hours balancing their ledgers during the financially perilous thirties; women in long gloves trying on hats at Montgomery Ward, drivers in Model T's honking out a robust "ah-oo-gah"as they pulled into the mechanic's garage.
In 1926, early motorheads and tinkerers would have felt right at home in the buildings of 912, 916 and 918 Kansas Avenue. They housed the Sunflower Battery & Motor Company, the J.E. Ward Garage and Shrake Electric Co., respectively.
That's the beauty of spending time in the Topeka Room. You'll discover stories beyond what you bargained for. And your life could become richer in the process. How you can satiate your curiousity about your own history or property. Members of the extremely popular Facebook group, the Topeka History Geeks, recently came to the Topeka Room to explore its files, directories, maps, yearbooks and plethora of other resources on local history.
By 1929, businesses had changed. Montgomery Ward would occupy 912 for years to come, and 916 was Bill's Barbeque Restaurant (coincidentally, our modern-day 900 block also features a barbeque joint, HHB BBQ, at 906 Kansas Avenue).
Society, admits that she, too, is a total history geek. Donna Rae's life work is to help people connect their personal histories to the wider history of a neighborhood, a city, a nation. "If you understand the conditions people lived through, good and bad, you get a better idea of what you are capable of as a person," says Donna Rae. "And somewhere along the line, life just seems to make more sense." Look up any property, person or moment in history with the help of our expert local history and genealogy research librarians. You can get started by visiting tscpl.org/history. — Leah Sewell, Editor

ou may have heard the word "makerspace" being tossed around in the news and on the Internet recently. It's a buzz word because it's a movement picking up pace throughout the world. Many libraries are now housing makerspaces - sites for the exploration of technology, manufacturing and educational opportunities. While our in-house makerspace, the Make-It Lab, focuses heavily on digital technology, there is a site in town for inventors and entrepreneurs to dig into some hands-on
manufacturing: 712 Innovations at 712 Kansas Avenue in downtown Topeka.
Amber uses her research expertise to assist people at 712 in doing market research, finding small business resources, researching a patent and, once, even answering obscure questions about cotton candy-flavored grapes. Yum.
712 is a makerspace and shared workspace housing equipment and technologies that startups and entrepreneurs usually don't have access to, things like a laser cutter, soldering equipment and industrial strength sewing machines. It's a membershipbased organization, open 24/7. While members are finding hands-on resources at 712, they'll run into one of our embedded librarians, like Amber Bonnett, Digital Librarian.
Visit 712Innovations.com to find out how to become a member. And if you have a library card, you're welcome to reserve a 3-hour worktime at our techfocused Make-It Lab. Visit tscpl.org/ make-it-lab for more info.
3 love lessons you can steal from books
Put your best face forward. When you meet someone, they’ll try to figure out what kind of person you are by what you exude on the outside. If you’re a comedic romp, you might reconsider that button-up cover you’re putting on display. Some say “Never judge a book by its cover,” but those people aren’t selling books.
Go all in. No one ever called it “creeping into love” or “descending the ladder of love” because it’s supposed to feel like falling. Now think of a book that you fell in love with. Didn’t it suck you in right from the first page? When it starts to happen, don’t be shy. Go with it. Jump right off that cliff.
TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS
Read it again. When you read a really good book, sometimes you’re hesitant to send it back to the library. Maybe you want to hover over those poignant final pages. That’s what our renewal service is for! Read it again. Same goes for your new love endeavors. Go on that second date. Get a deeper reading. And if love is anything like a good book, you’ll soon find yourself transformed by its effects.

Rescue Road: One Man, Thirty Thousand Dogs, and A Million Miles on the Last Hope Highway by Peter Zheutlin These dogs are the lucky ones: rescued from high-kill shelters and animal impounds, abandoned in dumpsters or the side of the road, they now are on the road trip of their lives. Greg Mahle drives thousands of miles transporting rescue dogs from the deep south to their new forever families in the north. Zheutlin joins Mahle on a rescue trip and discovers the backbreaking labor and heroic volunteers who work to give these deserving dogs a second chance at life.
rom the villainous Catholic school nun wielding her ruler to the sainted angel of mercy ministering to the poor, nuns – revered and reviled – have a special place in our culture. Inside the cloister, however, are real women struggling with real issues. Readers will relate to these accounts of women challenged by their vows, their communities and their faith.
At just seventeen, the sensitive and intelligent Karen Armstrong joined an austere order of nuns in England. Excited by the challenge of the hard road ahead, thrilled with the idea of being completed by God’s perfect love, the teenager willingly said goodbye to her family and her freedom to begin her new life as Christ’s bride. Seven years later, broken and empty, she left the Order. In her memoir, Through the Narrow Gate, she draws back the curtain on a stifling, antiquated Victorian world where rules and customs must be blindly obeyed and petty tyrants in black veils rule with an iron fist. The intimate details of convent life and Karen’s heartbreaking struggles to be the perfect nun will resonate with readers.
Right now, in a small Cleveland monastery, the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration are praying: they pray for the people, for the city, for those who request their prayers - for twenty-four hours a day, every day, they live out their mission to pray. Fascinated by this small group of cloistered nuns dedicated to prayer, journalist Kristin Ohlson, after much persistence, was granted access to the sisters. In Stalking the Divine: Contemplating Faith with the Poor Clares, Ohlson describes this unique contemplative community where life is filled with both hardships and joy and the nuns believe it is heaven on earth to adore God perpetually.
El Deafo by Cece Bell Imagine if you lost one of your senses. How hard that must be! Cece Bell gives you a glimpse because it happened to her. She uses the graphic novel format so her story jumps off the page. And what does she do to cope? Recreate herself as a superhero, of course!
— Jason Lamb, tween librarian
In 1963 Karol “Suds” Jackowski was a fun-loving, hard-drinking high school girl who prayed earnestly that if a vocational “call” from Heaven to join the sisterhood ever came, the call would be for someone else. Thus Karol was as surprised as anyone when she listened to the small voice inside her heart and joined the Sisters of the Holy Cross in South Bend, Indiana, exchanging ratted hair for a cropped coif and headgear, friends and family for sisterhood and community, and fifths of vodka with high school buddies for happy hour at the convent. Forever and Ever, Amen: Becoming a Nun in the Sixties is a humorous, exuberant account of Karol’s spiritual growth and struggles in becoming a nun during one of the most volatile periods in the history of Catholic sisterhood.
— Julie Nelson, author of Lost in the Stacks, tscpl.org
As young Mary Johnson stared at the cover of Time Magazine featuring the loving eyes and wizened face of Mother Teresa, she knew her calling: to become a Missionary of Charity. As Sister Donata she loved ministering to the poorest of the poor as well as supervising and teaching her fellow sisters. Respected and successful - she even accompanied Mother Teresa to Sweden - Sister Donata nevertheless found herself increasingly disillusioned with the turf wars and power struggles inside the MC organization. An Unquenchable Thirst: Following Mother Teresa in Search of Love, Service, and an Authentic Life is the fascinating memoir of one young woman’s search for love and meaning as a Missionary of Charity.
Flood Girls by Richard Fifield This snappy, sassy redemption story set in small-town Montana is “a wild and crazy debut novel by a talented young writer” filled with an uproarious and unforgettable cast of characters you won’t want to leave behind. In the spirit of Empire Falls and A League of Their Own, Richard Fifield’s hilarious and heartwarming debut will have you laughing through tears.
The sisters of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery in Atchison, Kansas have much wisdom to share in the lovely, lyrical Atchison Blue. Poet and journalist Judith Valente spent months conversing, observing and listening to this small community of Benedictine Sisters who generously shared their faith, stories, and thoughts on the challenges and joys of monastic living. As the seasons pass, Valente’s own spiritual journey is nourished and deepened by the good counsel of these women who have chosen a life of community and prayer. Genuinely moving, this is an inspiring portrait of contemporary monastic life.
Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Garvin Riley Cavanaugh is many things: Punk rock. Snarky. Rebellious. And gender fluid. Some days Riley identifies as a boy, and others as a girl. The thing is . . . Riley isn’t exactly out yet. And between starting a new school and having a congressman father running for reelection in uber-conservative Orange County, the pressure—media and otherwise—is building up in Riley’s so-called “normal” life.
