T

here are books and authors so awesome that you would give anything to talk to them about the characters and their story. You have read the story, and want see where it came from. This October you will have the chance to meet authors Angela Cervantes, Tom Averill, and Angela Johnson when they stop by the library to talk about their books. You just can’t wait to read them. Cervantes is the writer of the newly released Gaby, Lost and Found, a book set for teenagers that wraps immigration and deportation into a warmhearted tale. Cervantes is the featured author at the International Day of the Girl Fair and Forum Oct. 11 at 10 am. Her uplifting story speaks to the self-empowerment theme for this upcoming event. This year Teen Read Week (Oct 12-18) will feature the talented poet and children’s book author, Angela Johnson, Oct. 14 at 10 am and 1 pm. Her work of more than 40 books range from children’s picture books to poetry and novels about African-American families, friends and childhood. For teens, her writing explores deeper issues realistically and sensitively, like teen pregnancy and divorce from the characters perspective. Honored multiple times with awards from the Coretta Scott King, Michael L. Prinz and MacArthur Fellow awards, her latest work All Different Now, Juneteenth, the First Day of Freedom, tells the story of the first Juneteenth, the day freedom finally came to

the last of the slaves in the South, on June 19, 1865. Told in Johnson’s melodic style and illustrated by striking E.B. Lewis paintings. Averill is one of the library’s favorite speakers, and is also an awardwinning author whose works include Secrets of the Tsil Café, The Slow Air of Ewan Macpherson, Ordinary Genius and rode. The Washburn University writer-in-residence and professor will stop by the library on Ag Hall at the Kansas Expocentre, 17th & Topeka Blvd. Oct. 25 at 2 pm, to entertain us with excerpts from his latest work, A Trivia in Shawnee County is bursting at the seams. For one Carol Dickens Christmas, a night only, the library’s popular trivia night moves to Ag Hall subtle rework of the Charles at the Kansas Expocentre to accommodate up to 80 teams. Want Dickens classic into a to get in on the action and compete for the ultimate honor of Trivia multicultural tale. Champion? You’ll need up to 8 people working together to answer 100 questions from 10 categories like history, science, sports, movie/TV, books and pop culture. See program descriptions on Trivia participants can bring food and drink to snack and sip the evening away. page 13. No glass or alcohol is allowed. The doors open by 6pm and trivia commences at 6:30 pm. The ten smartest teams will win fabulous prizes.
