Cervantes is the writer of the newly released Gaby, Lost and Found, a book set for teenagers that wraps immigration and deportation into a warmhearted tale. Cervantes is the featured author at the International Day of the Girl Fair and Forum Oct. 11 at 10 am. Her uplifting story speaks to the self-empowerment theme for this upcoming event. Honored multiple times with awards from the Coretta Scott King, Michael L. Prinz and MacArthur Fellow awards, her latest work All Different Now, Juneteenth, the First Day of Freedom, tells the story of the first Juneteenth, the day freedom finally came to
the last of the slaves in the South, on June 19, 1865. Told in Johnson’s melodic style and illustrated by striking E.B. Lewis paintings. Averill is one of the library’s favorite speakers, and is also an awardwinning author whose works include Secrets of the Tsil Café, The Slow Air of Ewan Macpherson, Ordinary Genius and rode. The Washburn University writer-in-residence and professor will stop by the library on Ag Hall at the Kansas Expocentre, 17th & Topeka Blvd. Oct. 25 at 2 pm, to entertain us with excerpts from his latest work, A Trivia in Shawnee County is bursting at the seams. Ryan Freed H
elping 10-month-old Owen become ready to read is powerful motivation for Ryan Freed to serve as a trustee on the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library’s governing board. He and his wife Jackie love to bring their son Owen to the Kids Library for programs and activities.
“My first library card was with the Silver Lake Public Library,” said Freed. “We are readers, so we always had lots of books at home. I enjoy reading book series, especially ones that are hard to put down. I often have long nights of reading.”
Make a gift to The Library Foundation to become a member of the BUY A BOOK CLUB. Your donation is something you’ll be proud of – helping ensure we are your library for life. See your investment grow by supporting the things that our community needs: ¡ Books for a new bookmobile ¡ A mobile library dedicated to help children be ready for school ¡ More eBooks, streaming media, online magazines and music downloads ¡ Shorter wait times for things you want ¡ Library service where you work, live and play
As the Kansas Corporation Commission’s Director of Energy Division, he is responsible for energy efficiencies and renewable resources for businesses and the state of Kansas. He sees that the library has a similar mission by providing resources and lifelong learning that makes our community better. “Having a library that is focused on the needs of the community is a great economic development tool for our community,” said Freed. “It’s a reason businesses choose to locate here. It’s a good place to engage kids and for all people to have access to resources like the Internet.”

eterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. This holiday also has a Kansas connection. Former U.S. Representative Ed Rees, Emporia, presented a bill to Congress, renaming the holiday from Armistice to Veterans Day. Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954. Librarian Nate Hohl recommends these stories about the men and women who served our country in times of peace and war. Computer use at community centers
T
he neighborhood community center is typically a place of hustle and bustle, where kids and families come to seek resources and leisure. Over the past year, Shawnee County community centers are seeing even more action with the implementation of library initiatives. In partnership with Shawnee County Parks and Recreation, the library has added 36 new touchscreen computers, on-site library programs and a smartlocker to community centers. The consensus is that the additions are working and are being enjoyed. The kids love the computers for the educational games. And adults can use them to create resumes, print and do online research. “The computers are especially a benefit at community centers in low-income neighborhoods. It’s a nice change of pace from an emphasis on athletics,” said Lynn Bishop, recreation supervisor for Shawnee County Parks and Recreation community centers. When the library gets involved, books will soon follow. Oakland Community Center, 801 N.E. Poplar, received a smartlocker this past January, which allows users to request items from the library’s digital branch and then pick it up at the smartlocker right in their neighborhood. “There are a group of dedicated smartlocker users at Oakland Community Center who really seem to like it,” said Thad Hartman, community and strategic services manager. Along with books, media and computers, the library is also bringing programming to the centers. At Crestview Community Center, there’s a building enthusiasm over the next month’s book discussion. “It’s really opened up opportunities for people,” said Bishop. In the past year, the partnership has proven to be successful and with potential for future growth.

Guide to Zombies Fiction, Movies and the cultural phenomenon
Kyle Moreland
T
he zombie apocalypse is upon us. Or so you might believe if you’ve noticed the legions of zombie fans driving an overwhelming uptick in zombie-themed fiction, films, comic books, video games and television.
The fourth season of The Walking Dead premiered with nearly 16 million viewers last fall. The zombie fiction genre is so popular that it’s begun to sprout subgenres like romantic zombie, comedy zombie and zombie parody. Topeka has its own Zombie Walk, happening Sept. 27 in downtown Topeka, in which gorycostumed zombie enthusiasts assemble to lurch together through the streets. It’s fun to speculate about why our culture is obsessed with the re-animated dead, and plenty of scholars have already studied the zombie phenomenon from a societal perspective. Whatever the cause, one thing is certain: zombies are all the rage.
The library’s zombie collection pre-dates the recent fad, but we also have a wealth of new items available to download or check out. You can do zombies marathon-style with seasons 1-3 of The Walking Dead, or go the literary route and read the Walking Dead graphic novels by Robert Kirkman. We have over 100 zombie fiction books, over 30 e-books, dozens of DVDs, even a book of poetry dedicated entirely to zombies. We also have our own zombie librarian, Kyle Moreland, who has won “Best Adult Male Zombie” at Topeka’s Zombie Walk two years running for his grisly costume and makeup. “I’m an award-winning zombie,” Kyle humbly admits. Kyle recommends the popular Max Brooks title, The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead. In its introduction, the author states, “Every lesson in this book is a historical fact.” The text is styled as non-fiction, making its subject even more eerie, or amusing, depending on your gore threshold. “The zombie apocalypse is a cool concept, and a possible concept,” says Kyle. “You have to prepare yourself.” It’s hard to decipher whether or not he is kidding. Ready to meet the living dead? Go visit our digital branch at tscpl.org to download an e-book or search the catalog for zombie stories in formats ranging from board books to large print.
Zombie books, games & movies Whether or not the Zombie Apocalypse is just around the corner, you can find them lurking at the library.
