Your library card gives you access to a massive collection of books, of course. But it’s also your portal to media, technology and movies. With your card, you can gather the materials that help you learn, play and laugh. Your library card is small, but it is mighty.

Monical has served as a trustee since 2011, and is impressed with the remarkable staff that embraces change and does so with a positive attitude, working to ensure that the changes represent progress for the library.
“I read a lot of history and always have,” Monical explains. “It’s like being around old friends.” His favorite author is usually the one he is currently reading. Right now that's Rick Atkinson, author of Guns at Last Light, book three of the Liberation trilogy. He reads in both print and ebook formats.

Questions? Ask a librarian.
ere’s a simple trick kids can use to get Mom, Dad or Grandma to read: Put a book in their hands. But if there aren’t any books lying around, that critical interaction is less likely to take place. Keep books at home. Develop a home library for your child. Get books. Unearth your tote bags and head out to garage sales, thrift stores and book sales. Become a Friend of the Library to gain exclusive access to swaps, Booktique discounts and sales (tscpl.org/ friends). Encourage friends and family to give books as gifts to your child. Get the right books. Librarians can offer you information on some great staples for all age groups. Younger kids are learning to read, while older kids are reading to learn. Each will require different types of books. We're here to help you find just the right ones to build your home library. Make a place for books & reading. Book shelves can take many shapes. Great places for books are milk crates, bins, stacked boxes or a magazine rack. Reading places can be anywhere quiet. Turn off the TV when reading and get settled in with any book from your child's very own library.

Where dreams become reality < Jeanette Benson spends Tuesdays at the Dream Center looking for work and consulting librarians for help finding and applying for jobs.
The Dream Center is aptly named. There, from 2-5 p.m. on Tuesdays, people from the Hi-Crest neighborhood come to the Avondale East NET Center to pursue their dreams for a better future. And getting a job is crucial to achieving that future. Because Hi-Crest is particularly at-risk for homelessness, poverty and safety and health issues, the Topeka Rescue Mission board founded the site to tackle those problems head-on. Library staff and reps from other community organizations weighed in on a monthly task force in 2013-14. That monthly huddle spawned several initiatives, one
in particular where the Library could step in to help. In April 2014, the Dream Center opened its door. There, residents get connected to a wealth of resources to find employment. They can get ESL training, take online classes, get help writing a resume and cover letter and get connected to job providers. The library provides four computers and software specialized for career and job search and education. It's an idea that resonates in both the Aspen report as well as Bibio Tech, a recent book by John Palfrey. Libraries and librarians, they argue, will help the public to parse through the mountainous volumes of information now available online.
As the world hurtles at incomprehensible speeds into the digital age, libraries are often still viewed through a misconceived frame of shushing librarians and tomes of dusty books. How does one of America's oldest institutions stay relevant in the age of Google?
We're a model library for our active role in the community, curating and sharing our knowledge, facilitating community conversations and coming to the table in learning and civic engagement across Shawnee County. Our institutional goals are closely aligned with community goals and our librarians are increasingly mobile,
"When libraries got their start, they sought to fill a vacuum of information," says Gina Millsap, library CEO. "Today's networked world is one where information is in

showing up where they are needed at community centers, preschools and most recently at 712 Innovations, a downtown makerspace. Over the summer, we conducted six community workshops to seek input from Shawnee County citizens about the future they envision for their library. With those conversations as fuel, we'll develop community impact goals. We're looking at the bigger picture. Our strategic plan involves bettering the entire community, not just the customers we serve. The future of libraries is no longer a question to ponder. At your library, it's already in motion and picking up speed.
Biblio Tech: Why Libraries Matter More Than Ever in the Age of Google, by John Palfrey, posits that libraries should digitize information and embrace change.

HOW LIBRARIES HELP THOSE LEFT BEHIND BY THE DIGITAL AGE (Left): Theresa C. Hudson says that computers "terrify" her, but she's trying to learn. (Right): Sheila M. Mason works to gain computer skills that will boost her employability.
By now, most of us utilize computer skills innately. They're built into our neuron connections. We maneuver a mouse without a thought. We scroll through a feed, click links, refresh a page, as easy as breathing. But what most people who've embraced the digital age tend to take for granted is that basically everyone knows that stuff. Not so. While 96% of jobs in the U.S. require digital communication usage, not all Americans are comfortable using
computers or learning how to navigate the Internet. The pressure is on, however, for them to learn. Luckily, the library offers 20 different computer classes, free of charge, to those who need help catching up on their technological skills.

W
hat does it mean to be human? In Station Eleven, Emily St. John Mandel suggests that our relationships to one another and the beauty that we share through art and literature elevate our lives beyond simple survival.
In The Scavengers by Michael Perry, meet Ford Falcon. Though small in stature, she has a big heart and a huge personality. She’ll need both in a stark, harsh world in which people have to scavenge for their well being. And when her parents go missing, she’ll need the help of a neighbor as well as her own wits to find them. — Jason Lamb, tween librarian
Station Eleven begins with the death of one man, a star actor named Arthur who suffers a heart attack onstage. An EMT trainee from the audience rushes to his aid, and a child actress witnesses the scene. At the same time, a deadly flu has already begun spreading, and in a matter of weeks nearly all of the people on earth have died. Twenty years later, small groups of humans are making new lives without the technology of the past—no internet, electricity or automobiles. Kirsten, the former child actress who witnessed Arthur's death, roams as part of a Traveling Symphony who perform concerts and plays for small audiences. Their motto is a line from Star Trek: Voyager: "Survival is insufficient."
It sounds like science fiction, but it’s all unnervingly true: somewhere in the world today a nasty infection percolates in a small bat just waiting to spill over into an unwitting human victim. These zoonotic diseases have proven to be devastatingly lethal – think AIDS, SARS, Ebola – and the “Next Big One” could be even worse. With sly wit, lively writing and fascinating investigative work, science writer David Quammen probes for answers on this growing threat to humanity in Spillover. – Julie Nelson, author of Lost in the Stacks, tscpl.org
Mandel's novel is about survivors, and their efforts to rebuild human society, but it's also about the people who died, and the ways in which their actions and their art continue to ripple out to affect the living. In a narrative that moves between past and present, from one character's point of view to another's, readers gradually learn of the entangled connections that tie the characters to each other.
In She Came from Beyond by Nadine Darling, Esme “Easy” Hardwick plays the pretty geek on a cable access show that’s a cross between Mystery Science Theater and Elvira. Raised in San Francisco by two gay dads, her origins remain a mystery. Now on the cusp of thirty and a minor celebrity, Easy is content with her life. But when Syfy picks up her show and her online repartee with one of her fans becomes IRL romance, complete with ex-wives, children and pregnancy, things quickly spin out of control.
Station Eleven reminds us to appreciate the everyday miracles of our world—from lighted swimming pools and electric guitars to lightning fast communication with people around the world. There is danger and darkness in Mandel's vision of the future, but there is more good than bad, more hope than sadness, and the people who remain hold tightly to the most beautiful parts of the world that’s been lost. After you've absorbed the dark beauty of Station Eleven, check out The Passage, by Justin Cronin. The Passage is referenced by one of the characters of Station Eleven, and Mandel names it in the acknowledgements. The Passage would no doubt be a great read on its own, but I particularly enjoyed reading it and seeing the ways in which it may have inspired and influenced Mandel. Each addresses the question of what it means to be human, and beautifully illustrates the connectedness of human lives.
