Congratulations! You have health insurance.
Filled out wrong form.
I didn't know the library did that! When choosing a plan or choosing options within your plan, it’s a good idea to think about your total health care costs, not just the bill (the “premium”) you pay to your insurance company every month. “Out-ofpocket” costs like co-pays, deductibles and co-insurance have a big impact on your total spending on health care – sometimes more than the premium itself. The library and community partners are available to answer questions yearround and assist with open and special enrollment periods.
When it's time to get health insurance, you probably don't think of getting in touch with the library first. But we're here to say that you should, especially if you're not sure how enrollment works. The library plays a critical role in connecting consumers to health insurance information. We even have a specially devoted Health Information librarian. “Consumers who receive in-person assistance are nearly 60% more likely to enroll in health insurance, as compared to those who venture into the process on their own,” says Paige C. Ashley, Coordinator, Cover Kansas Coalition.
Get connected to health insurance resources at the library. Visit tscpl.org/ health or talk with a librarian at tscpl.org/ask.
At the library, we connect you with the right information and recommended local agencies.

We’ve successfully fostered community development by making sure the library is at every discussion, and more often than not, we’re actually leading those discussions. We’re creating leaders and lifting the community. We believe that our impact on the community is part of the reason why we are the 2016 Library of the Year, the highest honor in the U.S. and Canada.
Because of the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, our community is a better place to live, and continues to improve every day. We show up. We roll up our sleeves and get involved. Our mission tells you, the library is “your place” — it belongs to you, and we are here for your needs. We improve and enrich lives. We do not simply provide meeting spaces. We facilitate meetings. The library has 42 trained facilitators on staff. Our librarians and professionals have successfully facilitated meetings both in and outside of the building. These are conversations centered around topics like increasing collective health, battling poverty and homelessness, creating work-readiness programs, increasing broadband access, feeding children and supporting young professionals. These are conversations where the library can have an impact, offer resources and identify needs that we can fulfill. We always have a representative at

"The Business Neighborhood has materials that can benefit anyone who works for corporations to small business owners to entrepreneurs," says Miller. "You can learn to help people who work in team situations, get organized in project management or learn leadership qualities that will apply to all facets of your work life."
t's time to expand your network. You can hobnob and pick brains all you want, but to access the real geniuses of the business world, you'll have to start hanging out in one strategic place: The library's brand new Business Neighborhood. Located in the library's West Wing, the Business Neighborhood is as impeccable as an Armani suit. Sections are clearly labeled for ease of browsing. Anything you could possibly want to learn in order to expand your career or give your business a boost resides in these stacks.
The space is also full of entertaining reads, including company memoirs and profiles on some of the most successful CEOs and business leaders.
These aren't dusty tomes. The freshest literature and business philosophies can be found aside the old stalwart classics. You'll have to come see for yourself. Find out how easy a successful career can be when you have the best ideas right in the palm of your hand.
Terry says that the Business Neighborhood can be a valuable asset to those who aren't necessarily involved in the business world.
A specialized librarian, Terry Miller, M.B.A., presides over the collection, ready to assist you with locating the perfect book or audiobook.

Library computers & trainers at Deer Creek It's 2016, and that means you have to know and work with computers if you're in the workforce. President and CEO of THA, Sophie George, is pictured with library CEO Gina Millsap at the training center's grand opening.
To make sure everyone is up to speed, 12 library computers, an IT technician and two computer trainers just landed in the Deer Creek neighborhood. For neighborhoods like the East End, where the Deer Creek Apartment complex houses families who typically don't have easy access to the internet, free computer access can help people up their game and be more competitive in the job market.
The Deer Creek Training Center opened August 17. The library will offer professionally-led classes at the center and free internet.
That's part of the reason why the library partnered with the Topeka Housing Authority (THA) to bring a dozen computers to the newly-renovated Deer Creek Community Center.
George, President/CEO of THA. "They want what any family wants for their children — for them to have it better than they had. But it's incredibly difficult under the circumstances. We work hard to add services and opportunities for them any chance we get." Beginning in September, the library’s two professional trainers offer digital literacy classes in the center, all free of charge. Visit tscpl.eventbrite.com to register for classes, or call 785-580-4400. "We are thrilled and proud to be working with the 2016 Library of the Year," says George.
Celtic Fox: Books at the bar When this book club outgrew its venue at the Dutch Goose, leaders sought a bigger space to accommodate all the devoted bibliophiles. Every child ready to read. It isn't a pipe dream. We can make it happen with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, and you can help ensure a brighter future for nearly 12,000 Shawnee County kids. With the Imagination Library, every child under the age of five will be mailed an age-appropriate book each month. That will give kids a home library of up to 60 books to study, read and share with parents. Studies show that participation in the program positively and significantly improves early childhood literacy. For the program to be sustainable over five years, we need to raise $1 Million. Donate today to get the Imagination Library started in our community. $25 covers the cost for a child for one year. Visit foundation.tscpl.org. This program is a partnership between the Library Foundation and United Way of Greater Topeka.

We've been listening and updating our FAQ at tscpl.org/newcatalog. Thanks for your input! Here are some of the things you've been saying:
"I had a quick question on where the LOG OUT button was located and received a response from the library very, very quickly. Thanks for the new look and the assistance."
"I'm getting to know the new format better and I like it."
Yo, bro... it's so easy!
"I'm a first-time user and needed assistance setting up my account (at my age, I need assistance remembering my name). Anyway, a young lady named Arion walked me through the set-up and showed me what I needed to know. I now have a couple of books that will go to California Crossing in the spectacular bookmobile. My compliments to Arion, and to the library staff in general."
"I really love the new catalog. It is so easy to find books and movies!"

FIND YOUR NEXT READ
F
or as long as I can remember, I've been a staunch reader of “real” books. You know, the good old-fashioned paper kind. Then I realized it had been months since I'd held a “real” book. I noticed my kids, husband, work and life in general were eating into my reading time. WHAT?!! Reading was my escape—the way I relaxed and reenergized—but it was slowly slipping away. The Cursed Child by JK Rowling Harry Potter was pure magic, but it left us wanting more. On July 31, Harry Potter's birthday, JK Rowling quelled that hunger with the newest installment of the Potter saga: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Harry and Ginny, Ron and Hermione, and even Malfoy have grown up and moved on…mostly. Now their children, Rose Granger-Weasley, Albus Severus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy take up the tale. The story is first and foremost a play. It's been published as a script, so be prepared to read a script instead of a novel. It's currently on stage at the Palace Theatre of London. The special effects are like magic and audiences laugh, cry and fall in love all over again with this whole new cast of characters. — Marlana Hodgkinson, Kids Librarian
Working at the library, I encouraged people for years to listen to audiobooks while going on a road trip, working out at the gym, during their morning commute, etc. Here’s the funny thing: I never once listened to my own advice. I was definitely not practicing what I was preaching. I owned every excuse in the book (no pun intended) on why audiobooks wouldn't work for me: I can’t concentrate, my mind wanders, I miss big chunks of the story, it isn’t really reading—I could go on. Then one day, I took the plunge. I downloaded my first audiobook from Overdrive. Now, I’ll be honest, I downloaded for training purposes, to make sure I knew how to do it in case I had to help a customer. But once it was on my phone, I figured, Why not? I actually listened to it! I wasn’t in the car or at the gym, but at home, cleaning. What better time to listen to a book than while I’m doing something where I’m basically on autopilot? Much to my surprise, I not only got the house cleaned, but I also read about six chapters while doing it. Talk about using your time effectively! I have now listened to books while cleaning, driving around town—which, mind you, keeps my temper in check since I’m more invested in my book than what other drivers are doing to irritate me—and while going for a walk.
Look at You Now: My Journey from Shame to Strength by Liz Pryor Pregnant at 17, Liz Pryor’s parents forced her to spend months in a sterile, locked facility waiting for the birth of her baby. The other residents, tough girls who were abused or delinquents, regarded Liz as a different breed, but Liz nevertheless bonded with this motley group and learned valuable lessons at one of the most difficult times in her life. An engrossing memoir, Look at You Now reads like your favorite young adult problem novel come to life. — Julie Nelson, author of Lost in the Stacks, tscpl.org
Now I use both Overdrive and hoopla with my library card. hoopla is great because I don’t have to wait on a list to get the book. Both are great because they remember where I was if I don’t finish the book in the allotted time and have to check it out again. My reading has gone through the roof. I even listen to books while getting ready in the morning. You can make time for reading. You just have to get a little creative and find something you really enjoy. Here are some of my top listening recommendations courtesy of hoopla (Heads up! I’m a romance reader but I could probably find something for you in any genre if you’re interested).
Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple A brilliant novel from the author of Where'd You Go, Bernadette, about a day in the life of Eleanor Flood, forced to abandon her small ambitions and awake to a strange, new future. Today Will Be Different is a hilarious, heart-filled story about reinvention, sisterhood and how sometimes it takes facing up to our former selves to truly begin living. This is one not to miss. — Jennifer Jones, Author of Fiction 5, tscpl.org

1. The freshest trends in the print world
The sixth biennial Printed Image juried graphics exhibition supports national artists working in hand-pulled print media, and offers art lovers an opportunity to view the latest trends in printmaking.
2. Withstanding the test of time
So much has happened in the art world in Topeka over the last century — The emergence of new artists, the growth of Washburn University's art department, the formation and dissolution of the Arts Council and Arts Commission and the emergence of an arts district that thrives and bustles during First Friday Art Walks. One organization has witnessed it all. The Topeka Art Guild celebrates the 100 year anniversary of its founding in 1916 with an exhibit at the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery. The early founders' work will be on display and visitors can dwell on the importance of this long-standing troupe of artists in helping the formation of the arts in Topeka. | October 10 - December 18

Every child ready for kindergarten Here it comes, around the corner - the Learn & Play Bus! Babies, toddlers and preschoolers can climb aboard and dig into play that cultivates prereading skills.
The Learn & Play Bus is coming this fall, packing a bunch of toys, manipulatives, games and fun activities. The bustling vehicle will be overseen by Sherry Hess, the library's early childhood learning coordinator. She'll make sure all the little ones are developing through playing, talking, reading, singing and writing so that they're all set to read when they enter school.

Talking

It's the library's first Community Impact Goal: Every child will be ready for kindergarten. We're working on making that happen in a variety of ways, but the Learn & Play Bus is a huge piece in the puzzle. In Shawnee County, only 31% of children have a formal preschool experience. We're bringing the preschool to families right in their neighborhoods, where kids can learn vital literacy skills for free and in a super fun environment. Look for the Learn & Play Bus in your neighborhood soon. Your library is your best resource for raising a reader.
