Once you have collected as much information as you can from family members, use the Baker Genealogy Center tools available in print, online or on microfilm. Access popular research tools such as Ancestry.com, Heritage Quest and America’s Obituaries at tscpl. org’s “Research It” tab by selecting “Genealogy” under Research Databases. The Genealogy webpage also has free genealogy printable worksheets and links to search our obituary index and then request obituaries. If you need the Ancestry Library Edition, it can be accessed while at the library.
Begin your journey of genealogy discovery in the Dr. Phillip and Betty Baker Genealogy Center, located in the Topeka Room on the library’s second floor. Our team of genealogy experts, led by Sherri Camp, will provide tips and tools, starting with a pedigree chart (a family tree), which helps you organize your information into generations. Begin with yourself and work backward, documenting your parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc. Add as much information as you can.
the library did that!
Other resources you have access to: • local yearbooks • family histories • obituaries • census records • marriage indexes • cemetery indexes
The next step is to collect personal family records and family possessions. This could include: the family Bible, photographs, yearbooks, school records, letters, wills, birth certificates and pension records. Also document your family’s customs (holidays, cultural celebrations, etc.) and stories. Put this information into your chart. Next, interview your relatives. Document what you learn on your pedigree chart and family group charts. Keep track of notes on a research log. Ask for family records, match names to pictures, get biographical information, ask questions about events mentioned in letters and stories, and ask about the origins of stories.

lay games for fun, to explore, build friendships and keep your brain sharp throughout your life.
to grow plants, adapt animals and add heat, oxygen and water to the barren Martian surface. Games can build a social group. You might make a lasting group of friends and find a lifetime hobby.
In early childhood, games are an exploration. Games aimed at younger children feature bright colors, shapes and simple goals. Games help children learn to take turns, to follow directions, and cause and effect. Even if the game pieces end up in a mouth or scattered across the floor, it is a new and different experience.
Adults use games to learn and have fun. Games also encourage an active and flexible mind, which we all want. A lifetime of experience and practice makes senior players exciting and interesting opponents. Consider inviting some fun seniors to join your games.
Grade school skills of reading, math and logic open up more games. Luck plays a big part in junior games like Chutes and Ladders, Candyland or Checkers. Learning to handle victory and failure with grace is good for everyone.
You can check out board and lawn games in the library's Red Carpet room.

“The Library @ Work has saved me so much money and time,” said Tina Weinzirl, Hill’s employee. “I used to go online and either buy the ebook or the physical book. I now look at the library catalog first and have it sent to work if they have it. A day or two later – there it is. I feel like this is a ‘big city’ style service here in Topeka.”
Roy Wenzl is a freelance writer, photographer and author of Bind, Torture, Kill: The Inside Story of the Serial Killer Next Door. The former Wichita Eagle reporter will discuss the psychology of serial killers, specifically BTK.

“I am a frequent user of the Library @ Work and I love the convenience!” said Marjorie Lathrop, Hill’s employee. “I pick out my books online whenever I have time … no need to shoehorn in a trip to the library. njoy the reboot of a library program that’s been running for more than 40 years, Music for a Sunday Afternoon, on Oct 15 from 3-5pm in Marvin Auditorium. The concert will feature the bluegrass band Donkey Show, classical ensemble The Osten String Trio, jazz artist Dr. Craig Treinen, and vocalist Ashley Young. Music has been a part of the library since the first library building was built on the capitol grounds in 1883. This first building included a performance hall used for plays, readings and “musical entertainments.” The performance hall included a stage, dressing rooms, parlors and a grand piano. Many of these early performances had an admission fee, which helped pay the building debt and buy books. In the 1950s the library built a “modern library” at our current location and continued the tradition of musical entertainment. In 1973 the Friends of the Library’s purchase of a Steinway piano inspired

former art and music librarian Bob Daw to start Music for a Sunday Afternoon. The program was strictly classical for about a dozen years until Mark Rustman took over adding folk and jazz performers. Keeping the notes flowing for Music for a Sunday Afternoon are three musicians and library professionals: Kyle Moreland, Dr. Jim Mosher and Perry Hartmann. Kyle is a former violinist, current acoustic guitarist, singer and songwriter. Jim plays oboe and English horn in the Topeka Symphony Orchestra and the Topeka Woodwind Quintet. He also plays harp for hospice and palliative care patients during the Red Carpet visits. Perry’s musical history includes 10 years as a professional trumpet player on cruise ships and road bands. Music aficionados can look forward to four to five Music for a Sunday Afternoon events annually. Initially the committee will select artists who have a connection to Topeka. At the Oct 15 event, the musicians will perform in four different musical genres. Donkey Show plays a mix of traditional bluegrass music, as well as classics reimagined in bluegrass style with Adam Angelini on upright bass, Nathan Evans on mandolin, Daniel Kettle on guitar and Stuart Yoho on banjo.

Based out of Wakarusa, Kansas, the band has been active in eastern Kansas since 2012. The Osten String Trio was founded in 2015 by three Topeka Symphony members to explore the string trio repertoire. The members are concertmaster Zsolt Eder, cellist Eman Chalshotori and violist Gloria Britez Scolari. Dr. Craig Treinen is an Andreas Eastman jazz and saxophone artist and an inductee in the 2015 Kansas Music Hall of Fame. He is currently the assistant professor and director of Jazz Studies/Applied Saxophone at Washburn University. Ashley Young is a local singer/ actress and a member of Topeka Festival Singers. She performs a cabaret style event, Ashley Young & Friends, that she organizes, produces and performs with other local talent. Young will perform a mini, acoustic version of her cabaret show.
