6 cups butterhead or other lettuce
Cut the celery into 1/3-inch pieces and soak them in a bowl of ice water for 15 minutes. Drain and pat dry. Whisk vinegar, honey and salt together in a large bowl until blended. Add the pears and celery, and gently stir to coat them with the mixture. Divide the lettuce leaves among six plates, and using a slotted spoon top each leaf with a portion of the pears and celery, reserving the vinaigrette. Top each salad with 2 tablespoons of blue cheese and 2 tablespoons of pecans. Drizzle the salads with the remaining vinaigrette and season with freshly ground pepper. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

First time a comic book ever made me tear up. -Isaiah Fans of inspector Ian Rutledge mysteries have a chance to meet the author Sun, Oct 7. Bestselling mystery author Charles Todd is actually a mother and son writing pair – Charles and Caroline Todd. They are both traveling to Topeka to talk about their work, answer questions and sign books, 2-4pm in Marvin Auditorium 101BC.
The first book (of 21) in the Ian Rutledge series, A Test of Wills is one of this fall’s 2Book Topeka selections. The other is Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs, which is the first of 14 in that series. Take part in this community read with mysteries set in post-World War I England. See if you can figure out who done it!

This traveling exhibit showcases WWI military photography from the National Archives including photos from the fronts, behind the lines, the consequences of the war and how it was remembered.
