A

s a Kansas City kid on a tour of the White House with his parents, Richard Myers remembers them telling him “take a good look, because you’ll never see this place again.” But Myers did return, and did so on many occasions as the highest-ranking uniformed officer in the U.S. military, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a position he held under former President George W. Bush’s administration.

“After 9/11 for the four years I was chairman, I can’t tell you how many people all over the country – civilians, not in the military – who would come up and say we are really praying for you and the administration and we hope you can get us through this okay,” the retired four-star general said. “And that was a big part of sustaining me in the whole four years because there were a lot of tough times.”

Myers takes pride in his Kansas heritage. His passion for flying began in Kansas State University’s Reserve Officers Training Corps. Though he now lives in Arlington, Virginia, he returns each month to KSU where he is a professor of military history. “This was a way to do two things: support the university I love and keep my Kansas roots alive,” the KSU alumnus said. During his career, Myers flew fighter jets in Vietnam, commanded various Air Force operations in the U.S. and abroad, witnessed the nation’s leaders in the grips of a terrorist attack and worked to ensure national security following Sept. 11, 2001. In retirement, Myers’ life hasn’t slowed down much. Myers teaches at other universities and also serves on several boards, among them the Defense Health Board, where he keeps tabs on health care for wounded warriors.

I wanted to keep my Kansas roots alive.

His “tough times” will come to light during Myers’ keynote speech November 5, 7:00-8:30pm, Marvin Auditorium. He will also discuss his book, Eyes on the Horizon: Serving on the Front Lines of National Security, published this year.

“I think the benefits have gotten much better over the last seven years in terms of almost anything you can think about. There are still some things that need to be done,” he said. One of them, he said, is overcoming the stigma associated with a member of the military for seeking mental health care. There’s more to this story at www. tscpl.org/ richardmyers.

the library implements late fees RETURN, REMIND, RENEW

I

n this uncertain economy, families and businesses are making changes, and the library is no exception. “The impact on the quality and level of service we provide remains our concern,” Executive Director Gina Millsap said. The library will begin charging late fees on overdue items starting Oct. 1, 2009. “The late fee is calculated by the return date. Overdue items due on or after Oct. 1, will be charged a late fee,” Collections Manager Paul Brennan said. The library offers several account management strategies with our Return, Remind and Renew system: Return on time. Drop boxes are available throughout the county [see inside back cover for locations]. Materials can be returned at bookmobiles and at the library. Receive a reminder. Sign up for pre-due date reminders and overdue notices via email at catalog.tscpl.org. Renew your items online, in person, on a bookmobile or by calling our renewal hotline at 785-580-4424.

children. The purpose of this week is to highlight the importance of spending time reading to children.

ive your child’s mental and physical health a booster shot during the week of Nov. 15-21. No needles necessary, just a good book.

“Kids don’t instinctively know how to read, but they can be taught in a fun and playful way,” said. Kathy Ellison, Youth Services Specialist.

G

As part of Kansas Reads to Preschoolers, parents are encouraged to read Wiggle by Doreen Cronin, who will read from her book on Nov. 16 in Marvin Auditorium. Young participants will engage in light exercise and some early literacy activities during special Preschool Storytimes on Nov. 18 and 19. Wiggle provides plenty of opportunity to move and shake. Kansas Reads to Preschoolers activities are co-sponsored by ERC Resource and Referral and target birth to 5-year-old

Early literacy efforts better prepare children for school and help hook them on books at a young age. The library is dedicated to helping parents raise ready-toread preschoolers. Parents interested in helping their children improve their literacy skills can ask for information from a Youth Services librarian.
