PETE THE CAT COMING TO THE LIBRARY

E

ric Litwin, the award-winning musician, teacher and author of the popular Pete the Cat series performs on Wednesday, October 9 at 6:30 pm, in Marin Auditorium. Litwin describes himself as “a guitar strumming, book writing, harmonica blowing, song singing, folksy, and fun type of guy.” The kids call him “Mr. Eric,” a holdover from his days as an Atlanta, Ga. school teacher who used simple, musical and interactive stories with positive messages to teach kids to read. Back in 2008, with the help of a cat name “Pete,” Litwin became a # 1 New York Times best-selling author, with more than a million copies sold of the first four Pete the Cat picture books: I Love My White Shoes, Rocking in My School Shoes, Four Groovy Buttons

and Pete the Cat Saves Christmas. He is now working on new characters that incorporate interaction, music and positive messages. Litwin is also a nationally respected keynote speaker on interactive literacy and music. He is the co-creator of The Learning Groove, which offers parent and child music classes and preschool music curriculum. So bring the family to the library and get ready to sing, dance, laugh and fall in love with books. “It’s all good.”

"The moral of Pete's story is: No matter what you step in, keep walking along and singing your song. Because it's all good." Eric Litwin, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes

BIRDHOUSE TAKES FLIGHT Library books inspire birdie condo

L

ibrarians often connect people to resources they need in their lives, but rarely do people roll in a 35-pound, three-story birdhouse to show us how the library helped. So, we just had to share.

When Cary Rowlett suddenly found himself out of work, he decided to use his newfound time and existing skillset to build a bird habitat in his backyard. “After a summer of solid overtime, working Saturdays and some Sundays too, maintaining my daily chores and having no ‘fun time,’ I was laid off and used this project as a ‘vacation,’” he said. The birdhouse project, which started as a consultation with a librarian, took about two months. “I let go of all my worries and my concerns and just did something I wanted to do, and I learned a few things,” he said. “It did go as planned, but my plans were a bit overkill.” Inspired by books he checked out, he drew up birdhouse blueprints to strict standards. The library books helped him find the dimensions of individual boxes, what diameter to make the holes and where to put the holes in relation to the bottom of the house. The result was the creation of a birdie condo, with 15 individual birdhouses built into one box. His experience in the construction business helped when it came to putting it all together. Rowlett’s been coming to the library for years and remembers his most recent visit fondly. “The librarian who took me over to the birdhouse books was very nice,” he said, adding it was her friendly assistance that prompted him to return with his completed birdhouse. The library partners with Child Care Aware of Eastern Kansas each year to bring learning and fun to the younger sect through this storytime on steroids.

Kids and their parents or home childcare providers will converge on Marvin Auditorium Nov. 19 and 20 as we honor Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week. The week (Nov. 17–23) highlights the importance of reading to children to prepare them for school. “We want you and your family to read together often, not just this week but every week,” said Kathy Ellison, Youth Services specialist.

“When children have fun with books that is a huge motivator for them to want to learn to read themselves and will lead them to practice that habit when they are older,” said Eleanor Strecker, of Child Care Aware.

After children enjoy 30 minutes of interactive storytime, led by the magnificent storytelling duo Kathy and Eleanor, they’ll roam the different activity stations to learn, play, socialize and snack. Kids can spend as much or little time at each station as they like.

Each family or group will take home a copy of the book, Dogs Colorful Day, and an activity packet with oodles of ideas for raising a reader.

his October marks the beginning of a suite of fabulous library programs coming to a community center near you.

The rest of the community centers saw upgrades to computers last May. Computer users logged almost 4,000 hours in the first three months. “We continue to see new users coming into the centers specifically to use the new computers,” said Randy Luebbe, Parks and Recreation. Look for the new community center programs starting on page 10 of this publication.

f you are researching your family history, you need to look up – up to the second floor of the library. A journey to the second floor will reveal the historically decorated Topeka Room, a new tech Genealogy Center, and librarians who specialize in providing the resources necessary to explore your family tree.

Librarians Donna Rae Pearson, Shari Schawo, Brea Black, and Charity Rouse are specialists in local history and are available to assist both amateur and professional genealogists with both the print and online tools available at the library without costly subscription fees.

FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH STARTS in the Topeka Room

One of the basic research resources for genealogists is the obituary. Obituary records can often provide you with basic information about a person’s birth, death, marriage, children, and burial. “Our Obituary Index is one of the most valued research tools,” Schawo said. “Our index helps hundreds of people every year in the search for their ancestors and loved ones. We receive requests locally from Topekans and from people around the world. We recently received a request from Denmark.” The Topeka Room has more than 170,000 obituaries indexed from Topeka newspapers from 1906 to present and is available 24/7 online. You may request a copy of the obituary be sent to you. There is a fee ($5-$25) if you don’t live in Kansas. Multiple genealogy research tools like Fold 3, Heritage Quest and Genealogy Connect are available online from our database files at tscpl.org. Genealogists who visit the library can attend free beginning genealogy classes and use Ancestry Library Edition for free. You will also discover numerous print resources including local high school yearbooks and city directories. “The library is your place,” Schawo said. “We want to be the best, first and most accessible choice for you to do your genealogy and local history research.”

ENERGY SAVINGS WORKSHOP

free workshop to learn how to save money on home energy costs awaits you at the library Oct. 16. From light bulbs to deep freezers, newer construction to century-old homes, homeowners learn tips from the pros for creating comfort in your home and in your budget. Learn just how easy it is to reduce your energy bill with simple and practical improvements, like installing weather stripping.

“It does not take a large investment of money to make noticeable changes in your energy use. Changes in behavior and small investments can make a difference. We’ll show you how,” said Tammie Rhea, Westar Energy. For more information on the workshop, see page 11. Rack up the savings! Check out books, magazines and DVDs on home repairs and improvements instead of (or before) buying them. Take a tour of our Home Neighborhood. You’ll find home repair books in one convenient place. Need a guide? Ask a librarian.

College Hill Disco Club Topeka, Kansas ( March 1974)

The library will offer technology assistance to those applying online and provide fliers and other informational materials about ACA and the Marketplace in an alcove in its Magazine Reading Room. “But individuals must make their own decisions about what plan to sign up for,” Staley said. “We will refer them to where they can find information on what the plans are so they can make the best decision for themselves.” The law goes into effect Jan. 1, and enrollment in health insurance through the Marketplace will run from Oct. 1 through March 31. The library is offering several public meetings and programs about the new health care law and the Marketplace. See schedule on page 10. Staley said the library typically allows a person to spend two hours per day on its computers. Those filling out Marketplace applications will be allowed an extra two hours per day.

Put on your boogie shoes and help fill the library’s shelves with books. Your gift of $35-$500 ensures that you have more to choose from. Being a member is something you’ll be proud of – providing more bestsellers, more books for your children, and more ebooks to enjoy. To join the Buy a Book Club, contact The Library Foundation. In early July, the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced an initiative to get librarians ready to help people in every state learn about the new Marketplace. In addition to providing public libraries with information about the health care law, the effort also connects librarians with CMS navigators and certified application counselors to whom they will refer difficult or complicated questions/customers. 7

major revitalization of the Kids Library enters an exciting chapter in October. You could read about the changes here, but wouldn’t it be more fun for the family to come in and see for yourself? Yeah, we thought so.

As you and your children approach the Kids Library, you’ll be greeted by a grand oak tree, complete with a digital schedule of activities for kids that day. Expect the kids to be “wowed” by the biggest version of Charlotte’s Web they’ve ever seen. Attractions like a Tyrannosaurus Rex, solar system, and octopuswrapped aquarium ensure family visits spark a desire in your kids, and many others, to come back over and over again. The library has 35,000 registered cardholders age birth to 17 years. “A lot of our community’s kids may never go to a planetarium or never get to see a lighthouse in person, but they are learning about it. And at the library, they can actually see one,” said Marie Pyko, Public Services director. “There’s so much more learning that happens when kids get to interact with something. These installations will guide children as they go from learning to read to reading to learn.” As you look around the Kids Library you see a landscape that goes way beyond books on the shelves. Memories children make in the new Kids Library will be more vivid as 3D “learnscapes” move in. For example, the 3D school bus pulling up to the schoolhouse teaches children to be ready for school. As you walk through easier-to-browse shelving looking for that next great book, your kids will be surprised at new activities waiting for them around each corner. Installation begins in mid-September.

memento of summer can feel so good all year round. Just ask the library’s summer reading grand prize winners (pictured above) and about 3,400 kids who earned a free book in our 8-week summer reading challenge. More children registered and met the 12-hour challenge this year than in the past five years. Many followed their parents who modeled the way. In all, 275 infants, 6,224 kids, 982 teens and 1,212 adults participated. The library partners with the school districts to measure the impact of summer reading on test scores, finding students who read a just 20 minutes a day, or are read to, during summer maintained or improved their scores. Christ the King, Mater Dei, Topeka Adventist and Indian Hills all saw 25 percent or more of their students reading. Twenty schools recorded at least 10 percent participation.
