What brought you to Dubai?
I came to Dubai based on an opportunity with my brother during the early years of Graniti with a short term plan to assist in the business management, and here we are 16 years later. In addition to our stellar performance and good work ethics, today we stand out to be one of the most competitive ceramic trading companies and as of now our manpower strength stands at 100 plus employees. Dubai provides investment options in a highly progressive and multicultural environment. The economy is one of the most stable economies in the world and the rate of improvement is higher than other fast progressing economies in the Middle East. The lifestyle here is diverse as it offers
a multitude of venues where everyone can have a good time as well as world class infrastructure and quality products that enhance your lifestyle.
Describe a typical day
There is no typical day as such, although we consider every day as a challenge and it is our passion that drives us to the maximum. We follow the standard business practice based on our standard procedures. The day starts with meeting the vendors to discuss further diversification of the products based on the current trend in the market and the requirement from the clients. We always take the utmost care of our clients, be it at corporate or an individual level as, for us, the customer is always right. We provide them with tailor made solutions or you may call it total solutions. I have been innovative in renovating the new displays involving all FF&E to make the best possible displays that give us an edge to keep a high impact on designers and clients who visit our showrooms.
How did you get into this profession?
By the time I graduated in Business Management I was in my late 20s. I came to Dubai to assist my brother in the sales and management of the company. I wanted to push myself to the maximum. The competition at corporate level is fierce and has never been greater and it’s important that you grab every opportunity for competitive advantage and stay one step ahead with innovative ideas. 14 | FEBRUARY Connector

What is the best thing about your job?
I love designing and sales as well as steering the business, and as General Manager of the company I get to shape it so that we keep improving day by day. There is a saying ‘keep improving until the end and improvisation does not stop’.
And the worst?
No matter what position in the company you hold, you will need to play politics at work. Beyond a certain point perception matters more than reality. At times you have to sacrifice your personal and social life as you always need to keep up the pace with your job and to be always a step ahead.
What was a standout moment in your career?
Witnessing the transition of our company growing to become a key player in the ceramic industry on a national and international level. This growth started taking shape with a series of mega projects award from 2003 to 2005, such as Palm Jumeirah-Villas-Nakheel, Old Town and Burj Views - EMAAR, up to now where we still lead in the market for prime and iconic projects.
What advice would you have for any young person wanting to get into your field?
Follow your passion. The best career is the one where you enjoy what you do and try to be innovative and go the extra mile to reach to your cherished goal. We could simply say that if you don’t walk the extra mile you will not taste the success, so my advice to new entrepreneurs is to come out of their comfort zone and don’t be afraid to do something different from others. If your innovation turns out to be different then the sky is the limit and the bottom line is that tried your best.
Your motto?

Etihad Museum
Dubai is well known for always looking towards the future, but a new museum in the Emirate gives visitors a deeper look into the UAE’s past. Etihad Museum chronicles the era before the country’s founding, the agreement signing and subsequent declaration of the Union in 1971. The museum also provides insight and understanding of the UAE constitution and the rights and responsibilities of Emirati citizens. The building design was inspired by the shape of a manuscript, with seven columns symbolising the pens used to sign the Union agreement. As part of the museum initiative, the original Union House where leaders signed the treaty establishing the country was restored, and the famous flagpole at the end of 2nd of December Street was replaced with a slightly taller 123m pole. Another world When you consider that more than 70% of Planet Earth is covered with water, it’s only natural that we would want to explore this normally hidden world and to discover the creatures that live there. With that in mind, I decided to sign up for the PADI Open Water Dive Course at Al Boom Diving Centre on Al Wasl Road. Al Boom was established in the UAE in 1995 and they are now the GCC’s leading diving and watersports specialist. They have three Dive Centres with a fourth diving operation in Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, as well as five Watersports Centres and a dedicated Scuba Workshop. The first step is to complete a medical form and download the PADI etouch app in order to study the material. There are numerous tests that must be completed before the course commences. This can be done either online or in the classroom.
Day 1. Now the fun begins! After proving
you are a competent swimmer, you’ll get to grips with the equipment. Once kitted up you spend the day in the pool learning to breathe underwater…quite surreal, and going through various underwater exercises to gain confidence and the skills necessary for dealing with situations that may arise on a dive. 26 | FEBRUARY Connector

My experience over the three-day period was nothing but positive as each instructor was patient and re-assuring. Graze @ La Ville Hotel Recently opened in the heart of City Walk is La Ville Hotel, part of the Autograph Collection of the Marriot family. La Ville offers further alternatives in the very bustling and lively City Walk destination, such as Graze. A bright and spacious Mediterranean Gastro Grill with an emphasis on social and sharing. Offering fine dining food in a relaxed and friendly environment. Led by the young and passionate Mexican Chef Juan Pablo Dominges, who can be seen working with his team in the open kitchen, the menu offers an interesting selection with examples of his South American background and influence, and includes mainly locally sourced ingredients. The starters vary from angus beef sashimi and angus beef steak tartare with avocado puree to the very refreshing and tasty cerviche “de mi barrio� made with sea bass, a definite must try. was totally different to expectation. The choice of meats in the mains offers something for everyone and we opted for the gran fed Australian Wagyu beef rib eye cooked in three different methods and to perfection, along with a very healthy portion of Welsh lamb chops. The sharing menu offers some great sides and accompaniments to the mains including baked feta cheese, chanterelle mushrooms with organic egg and truffle oil, grilled razor clams with pesto and a fantastically tasty Caldero Rice. All portions were generous to say the least. For those with a sweet tooth (and a healthy appetite), the dessert menu though limited to a handful of choices, does not disappoint. If you are going to take two and share amongst yourselves, go for the Japanese Cotton Cheesecake and the very moreish Dark Chocolate Mississippi Pie with caramel popcorn and vanilla and black pepper ice cream. City Walk has very quickly become a popular destination with a great atmosphere, Graze at La Ville adds yet another experience and reason to visit this new part of town. If time allows make a visit to the roof top pool bar on the fifth floor, LookUp to finish off the experience with breath-taking uninterrupted views of Jumeirah and the Arabian Gulf from one side and Downtown Dubai, the towers of Sheikh Zayed Road and Burj Khalifa from the other. Confession; one Friday I ate a half jar of Nutella, with a spoon, in one evening… after dinner! And I know I’m not the only one with no self-control. I am smitten with nut butter, its not unusual to find a half empty peanut butter jar in my purse, car or work place. If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen me raving about my favourite store bought products and brands. As I feel like I am spending all my money on trying new brands, I decided to create my own healthy nut butter recipes and I am so happy to be able to share them with you. As always I’d love to hear from you and please keep tagging me in your social media posts. I love getting inspired by you.
Peacan Cinnamon Butter
Ingredients 2 cups high quality pecans, either whole or in pieces Sea salt, to taste Dash of ground cinnamon (optional) Directions: Pour the pecans into a large skillet and toast, stirring often, over medium heat until fragrant. This will take about 4 to 8 minutes. 46 | FEBRUARY Connector
Pour the toasted pecans into a food processor or high-speed blender and let them cool for several minutes. Then blend the pecans, pausing to scrape down the sides with a spatula often. The mixture will be crumbly at first, but will eventually blend into supercreamy goodness. Be careful not to let the mixture get too hot, which seems to cause oil separation. You might have to stop and let the mixture/machine cool down for a bit just to be safe. The amount of blending time required really depends on your machine - my old food processor took ten to fifteen minutes to turn the pecans into pecan butter, but my fancy Vitamix blenders can turn it into creamy butter in a minute or two. Add a pinch of sea salt and a dash of cinnamon (if using). Blend again, taste, and add more salt or cinnamon if needed. Pour into a small jar, seal it with a lid, and store it in the refrigerator for good measure. Notes: This pecan butter is only as good as the pecans you put it in it. Seek out fresh pecans from a store with high turnover. Bonus points if they are local, organic and/or stored in the refrigerator. www.connector.ae
Goji Almond Butter
Ingredients 2.5 cups raw mixed nuts (almonds, brazil nuts, cashews) 3 tbsp chia seeds ⅓ cup goji berries Pinch sea salt ½ tsp ground cinnamon Directions: Preheat oven to 180 C and spread the raw nuts out across a large oven tray. Roast nuts for 8-10 minutes or until slightly browned. Allow to cool to room temperature. Place nuts in a food processor and blend on high speed until the nuts start releasing their oils and breaking down into a smooth butter. Once the butter has started to become nice and smooth, add in the chia seeds, goji berries, salt and cinnamon. Then, process again to mix it all together and lightly break up the goji berries into tiny chunks. Pour into a small jar, seal it with a lid, and store it in the refrigerator for good measure.
Homemade Nutella
Ingredients 3 cups raw or roasted unsalted hazelnuts ⅔ cup dairy free 70% dark chocolate, chopped 1 tsp pure vanilla extract ½ tsp sea salt Directions: Preheat oven to 180 degrees and add hazelnuts. If raw, roast for a total of 12-15 minutes. If already roasted, roast for 8-10 minutes just to warm the natural oils and loosen the skins. This will www.connector.ae
make it easier to blend into butter. Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Then transfer to a large kitchen towel and use your hands to roll the nuts around and remove most of the skins. You want to get as much as possible off because it yields a creamier Nutella. But it doesn’t have to be perfect! Add hazelnuts to your high speed blender. Start on low and slowly turn up the power to high. This should take about 1-2 minutes and your nuts
will be creamy and smooth. Heat the chocolate over a double boiler and allow to fully melt. Set aside. Once the hazelnut butter is creamy and smooth, add the melted chocolate, sea salt and vanilla. Blend/puree again until well incorporated. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed, adding more salt or vanilla if desired. Transfer to a clean jar and store at room temperature for everyday use for 2-3 weeks or more.
Notes *If you don’t want to use melted chocolate, sub cocoa powder. Once the nut butter has formed, add 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, vanilla, sea salt and puree. Once incorporated, add 2-3 tbsp (or to taste) maple syrup, agave or honey. Keep in mind the more sweetener you add, the firmer/stiffer the Nutella seems to get. Blend until creamy and smooth. Colour palette: There is no need to stick with the ubiquitous boring off-white painted walls and ceilings. Consider painting walls in another neutral colour such as beige or grey. However, bachelors do not have to be confined to neutrals or solids in all areas of the room. Care for sleep: If you have trouble falling asleep, check your environment. Keep your bedroom cool and dark. Avoid nicotine and caffeine late in the day or at night. Get regular physical activity but not too close to bedtime, if possible. Also, avoid stimulating light and noise around bedtime. Do not agonise over falling asleep. If you are not nodding off within a reasonable amount of time, get up and do something else until you feel sleepy. Then try going back to bed.
Motherhood, sleep deprivation and a new baby No doubt being new parents is a joyous event but many couples are amazed at how a tiny new life can take control of their emotions, routine and most importantly restful sleep. With constant need for attention, diaper changes, colic cries and sleepless nights; being a new parent can be exhausting. But sleep deprivation and motherhood need not go hand in hand. Try these expert tips. Sleep tips for new mums Sleep when your baby sleeps: Just turn off the phone, the laundry can wait and ignore the dishes in the sink. You will always find time to manage chores when your baby is awake. Be patient when being watchful: A lot of times a discomfort, squeak or a slight cry could just be a matter of your baby settling down. Wait until you feel it is really required to attend to your baby. Take turns in night time duties: It is important that you draw a schedule along with your partner so that you both get enough rest. If you breastfeed, your husband could take up diaper changing. Once the baby is on bottle feed, fathers can take turns in feeding the baby. Set aside social graces: It is ok to say no when you feel a guest will be intruding in your much 54 | FEBRUARY Connector
Sleep tips for new baby Recognise sleep signs of your baby: Rubbing of eyes, whining and crying, yawning, stretching or even flicking ears with hands are all sighs of feeling sleepy. Ensure you keep everything aside and tend to your baby. Start disciplining day and night time zones: You can show the difference between day and night to two to three week old babies. Bath and changing to start of the day, keeping it bright and cheerful throughout, maximum play, everyday sounds of the radio or even the washing machine; are all ways to make them understand day time. Later in the evening, keep lights and noises low, avoid eye contact and play when feeding and sponge clean the baby to change into pyjamas for a night time routine. Set the mood: Baby’s bedroom should be dark, cosy and comfortable. Keep temperature levels comfortable to induce sleep. Of course it helps to keep window shades dark to keep the sunlight at bay. You will be eventually able to develop your baby’s sleep schedule but if you think you have a sleep problem, there is no harm in consulting a Sleep Specialist. Identifying and treating any underlying conditions can help you get the rest you need. Remember, taking good care of yourself, including getting adequate sleep, will help you take the best care of your baby. The best parenting strategies We all know we cannot be perfect 100% of the time, we are told that we should except our mistakes and learn from them. Yet despite this many of us still hope to be the ‘perfect parent’, when maybe we should be excepting that there is no way to be a perfect parent but there are plenty of ways to be a good parent.
Y
ou might be using the same strategies that your parents used, or maybe you decided you wanted to be the polar opposite. Whatever your methods, if it is a case of ‘one word from you and your children do as they like’ then you need to change your parenting from a negative into a positive. Here are four simple parenting strategies that work. You are in charge. You are not just taller than your children are - you are the adult they can look up to and feel safe with. Therefore, do not be a parent-wimp. If you are afraid or reluctant to take charge because you want your children to like you or because you do not think you are supposed to - think again. Children need to know there is a grown up at the helm - this makes them feel safeguarded and secure. Say little. Many parents use far too many words and end up obfuscating the issue. Why spend five minutes asking questions such as, “Why did you feel the need to do that Michael?” or “How would you feel if your friend hit you?” and “You are supposed to play nicely with other children”, when a simple “No hitting!” will suffice. Cut down the number of words you use, be direct and make each word effective. Do not be hurried. Not all parental decisions can or should be made in a hurry. You often need time to think about whether you want your son to ride his bike to the mall, a mile away or take the bus into town with his friends. Is he old enough? Is he responsible enough? Does he always wear his helmet? What is the traffic like? Do not be hurried and feel free to tell your son, “I’ll have to think about that”. This is a better option than being rushed into the wrong decision. Expect the best. Your child is a work in progress. What is a quandary today may disappear all by itself tomorrow as your child 56 | FEBRUARY Connector
grows and develops. For instance, the tantrumthrowing toddler becomes a pre-schooler who can ask for a toy instead of grabbing it. Do not complain about how endless your parenting problems seem or how dreadful your children are. Expect them to be good - you will be pleasantly surprised. Here are some ways to help your children grow into healthy and happy individuals: • Show you love them and say it. Tell your children every day, “I love you.” Give them hugs and kisses frequently. • Listen when your children talk. Listening to your child tells them that you know they are important and that you are interested in what they have to say. • Make your children feel protected. Comfort them when they are scared. Show them you have taken steps to safeguard them. • Provide order in their lives. Keep a regular timetable of meals, naps and bedtimes. If you have to change the timetable, tell them of the changes ahead of time so they can adjust. • Praise your children. When your child learns something new or behaves well, tell them you are impressed and proud of them. • Criticise the behaviour, not the child. When your child makes a mistake, do not say, “You were stupid”. Instead, explain what they did wrong. For example, say, “Running into the street without looking is dangerous”. Next, tell the child what to do instead, “First, look both ways for cars”. • Be consistent. Your rules do not have to be the same as other parents, but they do need to be clear and unfailing. • Spend time with your little ones. Do things together, such as reading, walking, playing and even cleaning the house. What children want most is your attention and your time. What is it?
KeraStraight rebuilds the keratin within the hair that has been lost, working both internally and externally on the hair. It simultaneously repairs, straightens and nourishes all hair types. It is great for dull, dry, damaged, curly, wavy or frizzy hair, and can even be used on hair that has been coloured, straightened or permed.
The process:
My hair was washed with a cleansing shampoo to open the hair cuticles, then the KeraStraight formula was applied and left on for 30 minutes. Then it was dried, shampooed and dried again before straighteners were used to seal in the product. I have long hair and the entire process took 3.5 hours. There were no unpleasant side effects, such as stinging or chemical odours, and unlike some treatments there is no waiting time before you can wash and colour your hair again.
Verdict
The results are fabulous! My hair was left looking incredibly healthy and shiny, and was soft and smooth to the touch. The great thing is that the treatment does not totally straighten your hair - I still have my natural wave but it is so much more manageable. Best of all, blow drying time is now reduced from 40 to 5 minutes! I had this treatment 2 weeks ago, and it looks as good as the day I walked out of the salon, and should continue to so for at least 4 months.

Leaping Bunny require that a company agrees to independent audits, meaning they can check that a product is genuinely cruelty free. If you spot the cute little bunny logo displayed on the product, it has passed the test and is easily identifiable as cruelty free. If you don’t see a logo, fear not. You can also double check on the Leaping Bunny and PETA websites or app and make an all-important well informed decision before you buy. Options for cruelty free brands have grown considerably in the last few years and with so many quality brands now on the market, and some even homegrown here in the UAE, there is no excuse to not make a conscious decision on your next beauty haul! 10 great new habits to make happiness last all year
1. Forget resolutions, set goals At the start of the New Year our optimism and motivation are at their peak, we feel energised with the idea of starting afresh. The reality is that very few resolutions are successful long term. This year instead of the usual wish list of new habits, create a strategy. Set goals of what you want to accomplish throughout the year and work back with smaller mini goals or milestones. Ensure they are realistic and manageable, focus on achieving them and remember to celebrate as you achieve them. 2. Be authentic As humans, we need to connect socially and emotionally to others. more satisfying and fulfilling friendships and relationships. Check in with yourself often, strengthen your inner compass and be genuine about thoughts and feelings. You will not be everyone’s cup of tea. Accept we are all different and focus on being authentic rather than fitting in. Fewer deep connections are much healthier than many shallow ones. 3. Have self-compassion While it is easy to feel compassion and empathy towards our children, spouse, family and friends; we rarely show ourselves the same understanding. Over-thinking past decisions and constant self-criticism are some of the biggest invisible negative habits we have. Like any habit, it can be broken once we are aware www.connector.ae
of the triggers. Start noticing how you talk to yourself, practice turning your critical voice to one of forgiveness and compassion. 4. Have gratitude It has been scientifically proven that the practice of gratitude strengthens our hearts and changes how negative or positive we perceive our lives to be. This is a fun one to with the family. Start a gratitude jar with the kids, every day each write out something you have appreciated and pop it in the jar. Include acts of kindness, simple experiences like feeling the warmth of the sun and little achievements like cooking a healthy meal from scratch. Appreciate time spent with family members and friends however little. Periodically, take out and have a read of all the things that help you be thankful in life. 5. Learn something new Our brains are made to process new information and derive meaning from new experiences. Make a plan to give your brain something new to think about. Consider taking up a new hobby or sport, attend a class, visit a museum or cultural centre or signup for structured online learning. There is a huge number of free courses available online through iTunesU, EdX and TedEd. 6. Practice mindfulness It seems that every expert is promoting meditation and mindfulness these days. The reality is that the practice of focusing on the present moment can help you have a more objective outlook and contribute to the reduction of stress, depression and anxiety. It creates a mental space that allows you to develop more awareness and control over your feelings, thoughts and behaviours. It is daunting to know where to start. There are no rules. Look for guided meditations in apps and online that focus on the theme or state of mind you want at the time. Start short and gradually increase the duration. Remember it is a practice and there is no wrong, only what is right for you. Be patient and persist with it, you will feel the benefits. www.connector.ae
7. Give back or give forward We all know how good it feels to give gifts - gifts of time, affection, appreciation, special occasions or just for the sake of it. Acting from kindness has been proven to contribute to our levels of happiness. Giving back in a reciprocal manner is great but how about giving forward. Next time someone does something kind for you, why not spread the love and give forward at the next opportunity you have. 8. Do something meaningful We value our lives and are more satisfied when we feel we have purpose and meaning. This is not about having a career or a job, it is about contributing to a community or society in a way that is meaningful. Offering to help someone else, volunteering or teaching someone a new skill. With a little creativity for new ideas, the sky’s the limit with what meaningful things you can do. 9. Play It is so easy to get caught up with our busy lives - keeping up with chores, work, school, activities, homework. It can sometimes feel like a never ending to do list. Every now and again, block off time to enjoy the simple act of play for the sake of play. No life lessons, no meaning, just fun and maybe a little silliness! 10. Let nature take your breath away This one’s a biggy. Imagine that feeling when you are out in nature in a landscape so breathtakingly beautiful. Take a trip to somewhere that fills you with awe and wonder. If you think that’s difficult to find in the UAE, you are mistaken. Living in Dubai we are spoilt for choice when it comes to picking a restaurant, shopping for a gift or getting flowers. Yet if this is all we focus on for Valentine’s, after a few days or weeks the day is often forgotten. So why not make this year a more memorable by making some new commitments to show your love more frequently and strengthen your relationship. As it is fairly easy these days with internet dating to get into a relationship, but staying happy in a relationship is entirely different thing all together. The following three steps are designed to bring you closer and happier than ever before; this Valentine’s and beyond. 1. Commit to do more loving acts As a marriage transformation specialist, I can tell you that no one ever strengthened their marriage by talking about or going over their problems. To increase connection and closeness it takes regular acts of love. Look at the list below and pick anything that you would like to do more of, to create more love in your relationship. Then make a commitment to yourself (and each other if you wish) on what you will do to grow your love and make your partner feel loved every day. 1. • show affection in some form every day • keep a picture of your lover in your wallet, at work or on your phone • make a commitment of regular date nights • create more quality time together by turning your phone on silent when you are together • show them they are important by making time to speak whenever they call • talk more than about logistical or financial matters daily • spend more time interacting with them than staring at a screen when your home • when they need your help, give them it wholeheartedly • give attention daily and ask each other how was your day was and really listen attentively • plan a trip or activities for the year ahead • regularly share what you appreciate about them most • commit to making them smile once each day. Do not wait for your partner to go first as Gandi said “Be the change you wish to see”. 2. Reminisce on your best times A great thing to do on Valentine’s Day is to reflect on all the fun moments you have had and share what you are grateful for. This is a great way to increase closeness and love. Dr Gottman, author of “7 Principles For Making Marriage Work” and marriage counsellor in his 40 years spent working with couples, found that he was able to predict divorce by asking couples about their relationship history. He found that those who looked back on their early days fondly and remembered how positive they felt, how excited and happy they were, were more likely to be able to get through difficult times. Meet Sophie Rey and Asoka These two 2 kittens were found living in a garden of an abandoned villa. The whole compound was scheduled for demolition and the kittens needed to be rescued. On top of it all one of them had a really bad eye that needed attending to. Sure enough 38smiles rescued the kittens, provided the vet care they needed and soon enough found them a foster homes. Introducing Sophie Rey and Asoka named by their little foster brother Laith.
