Letters to Louise

Send your letters to editorial@connector-dubai.com. I’d love to hear from you!

• Hi Louise, just wanted to say love the dates for your diary pages! Saves me searching for the things I like and new things I haven’t tried before as it covers everything. Thanks, Fiona • Spring spruce up gave me the inspiration to freshen up the house before summer - I went for the feature wall idea as we’re in a rented villa so I didn’t want to paint the whole room. It saved me money and still really changed the look. Great idea! • I keep reading about people meditating and how their lives changed because of it. I always thought I wouldn’t be able to sit still for that long, but the 5 reasons to add meditation to your life article gave me the motivation to try it out and I started with the mini relaxation exercises. I can just about manage 3 minutes but I suppose it’s all about baby steps! Thanks from a fidget! • Thanks for the Easter baking ideas the kids loved it! OK so my kitchen was a complete mess but there were no tantrums and squabbling so totally worth it! Abigail 12 | MAY CONNECTOR

A coffee with…

Reem Al Ghaith General Manager of ENABLE, a Social Entrepreneurship initiative by Desert Group.

14 | MAY CONNECTOR

www.connector.ae

Describe a typical day A typical day is waking up and taking the daily beautiful route from Sharjah to Dubai using Emirates Road. I don’t mind that it’s a longer route, I just love the desert and it makes me feel like I’m on a road trip. Plus being a coffee addict, I have to have a freshly brewed cup to make the experience even better and a good start to the day.

How did you get into this profession? I used to work in marketing and communications at Desert Group, and from there I was fortunate to take the responsibility of handling and managing its CSR initiatives. I took over Desert Group Social Inclusion Project in 2008 (hiring 32 employees with cognitive disability) and felt that we could create a positive impact internally with a comprehensive rehab programme that develops skills, rehabilitates, records, monitors and reports individual performances. We now manage an award-winning programme across the MENA Region for ‘Best Community Development’ Project handed out by Taatheer CSR MENA Awards in 2016. Not only that, we have successfully created sustainability for our social project by adopting (social entrepreneurial) framework; Enable. Enable now is a successful scenario that promotes SME Inclusion, biding by Dubai’s My Community Initiative (employment and self-employment pillar). It’s part of our advocacy strategy to create awareness

www.connector.ae

and train corporates and the disabled community on the viability of this model.

What is the best thing about your job? The best thing about my job is being a part of creating a true impact on this cause, that is not only successful but sustainable. I know this model will provide empowerment for the individual and education for the community that will last and can create change.

And the worst? The worst is facing challenges to change, in certain instances, some people’s mindset and eliminate stereotypes. The lack of sufficient awareness is the reason, and we are determined to change that.

What was a standout moment in your career? When we won Taatheer Award, it meant we were on the right path.

What advice would you have for any young person wanting to get into your field? My advice is take action, and reach out to the relevant authority or party. Today there is great support from our government and great outlets in which one can achieve a dream. We just need to work hard and communicate with others.

Your motto? Live life to the fullest, work hard, make a difference and share the success.

The story of Dubai is set to unfold in real time at Saruq Al Hadid, the newly opened museum in Dubai’s historical district. Displaying a stunning range of artefacts unearthed from a new archaeological dig at Saruq Al Hadid. The archaeological site was discovered by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum while he was flying his helicopter, as he noticed that some dunes were a darker colour than others. The museum takes you through the mysterious route of archaeological discoveries and presents exciting treasures of long ago. You can take a leisurely walk among relics, dramatic displays of gold, bronze and iron and an impressive haul of over 900 objects discovered from the site. Young visitors can get hands-on with culture and reconstruct a pot, assemble an animal skeleton, or even help the experts solve a mystery. Open now, with tickets priced at Dhs 20 for individual and Dhs 10 for children aged 7 to 12 years. Entry is free for adults over 60 and children up to 6 years. www.saruqalhadid.ae

Dubai is known for always looking towards the future, but a new museum in the emirate gives visitors a deeper look into the UAE’s past. The museum chronicles the era before the country’s founding, the agreement signing and subsequent declaration of the Union in 1971. It also provides insight and understanding of the UAE constitution and the rights and responsibilities of Emirati citizens. The building design was inspired by the shape of a manuscript, with seven columns symbolising the pens used to sign the Union agreement. As part of the museum initiative, the original Union House where leaders signed the treaty establishing the country was restored, and the famous flagpole at the end of 2nd of December Street was replaced with a slightly taller 123m pole. The museum complex covers 2.5 hectares. Open now with tickets priced at Dhs 25 for adults 25 years and over, Dhs 10 for students aged 5 to 24 years and free for children below 5 years and for individuals with disabilities. www.etihadmuseum.dubaiculture.ae

Three of our favourite stand-ups are back by popular demand at The Laughter Factory – with Dominic Holland, Kai Humphries and Addy Van Der Borgh taking equal billing on the May tour. Today Dominic Holland may be best known as “Spider-Man’s dad” - his son is Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker across the Marvel universe. Kiwi is an exotic fruit that originated in China, with a fuzzy outer skin and juicy flesh. Rich in trace elements, minerals and vitamins, the kiwi quickly conquered the global market with its unique, exceptional sweet and sour taste!

Why introduce kiwi into our daily diet?

How to enjoy kiwis

It is rich in vitamin C. Consumption of a single kiwifruit can cover the human organism’s daily requirement in this vitamin. It is also an excellent source of vitamins A, E and B complex, and it contains potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium.

There are several different ways to incorporate kiwis into your daily diet: • Serve your friends a refreshing fruit drink made with kiwi and melon. • Make delicious and healthy kiwi-based smoothies. • Enrich your breakfast by adding freshly cut slices of kiwi to yoghurt or to your cereal. • Enjoy chocolate kiwis! Cut the kiwis in slices and dip them in melted chocolate. The taste is a revelation! • Simply add kiwi to your favourite green salad.

European kiwis conquer the global market! European kiwi stands out for its quality, both in taste and in nutritional value, because it is harvested by hand. Kiwis are placed in suitable refrigerated storage areas within 24 hours from harvesting, thus guaranteeing that all of the fruit’s nutrients are preserved. European kiwis stand out and are sought after in many international markets, and are exported to over 51 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and America.

So let your imagination run free and pleasantly surprise your friends and family, by using kiwi in various recipes. The results will amaze you!

Understanding

Ramadan

T

he word Ramadan comes from the Arabic root ‘ramida’ meaning dryness or scorching heat, and is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The Islamic calendar uses the phases of the moon to mark its days, usually 344 or 345 days per year, and the sighting of the new moon marks the start and end of Ramadan. In the 365 day Gregorian calendar, Ramadan falls approximately 11 days earlier each year. Muslims believe that during Ramadan, Allah revealed the first verses of the Quran to the Prophet Mohammed - Peace Be Upon Him (PBUH), and honour the holy month with prayer, fasting and charity. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam (basic acts), and is obligatory for all Muslims who have come of age. Those who are ill, travelling, pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic or menstruating are excused, but must make up the days later on. To fast means not to eat or drink (including water) during daylight hours. Muslims are also expected to abstain from smoking, sexual relations and speaking sinfully. While non-Muslims are not required to fast, they are legally obliged not to eat, drink or smoke in public places. If you break the rules, you will probably receive a verbal warning, but be careful, short jail sentences have been handed out in the past. Generally speaking, the police are lenient, but your understanding and cooperation are expected and very much 28 | MAY CONNECTOR

appreciated by the authorities. Of course you may eat, drink and smoke behind closed doors and many restaurants and hotels continue to serve food behind screened-off areas. Other things to be aware of include: no music in public during the day as Muslims listen to Quran recitations; the dress code is intensified, so dress modestly by covering your shoulders and knees, and there is a change in traffic as working hours are cut to six hours a day, allowing those fasting to leave the office early and rest before Iftar. ‘Iftar’ is the breaking of the fast at sunset and is a social gathering serving traditional meals. Muslims are urged to invite others to break the fast with them and it is said that the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) used to break his fast with dates, a tradition that Muslims still follow today. In some places in Dubai, the firing of a traditional cannon is still used to announce Iftar and two shots are fired on the first day of Eid Al Fitr to celebrate the end of Ramadan. Throughout the month, you will hear the words ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ and ‘Ramadan Kareem’ used as greetings (Mubarak means blessings, Kareem means generous), and ‘Suhoor’ which is the meal in the morning just before sunrise. Please show consideration during this special month, but most of all, you are encouraged to experience the spirit of Ramadan by taking part in the many social activities on offer, especially Iftar. www.connector.ae

Ramadan, the period of mental, physical and spiritual elevation, is celebrated throughout the world. Indeed this auspicious time is also honoured in Dubai, as the city obliges later operational timings and an extra emphasis on charity and quality time with loved ones. Activities peak in the evening as observers break their fast with their families, and Dubai’s plethora of eateries come to life with dedicated menus and even purpose-built marquees with special food and entertainment. Cesar Bartolini Chef de Cuisine at Bread Street Kitchen & Bar shares one of his favourite recipes.

C

esar Bartolini, Chef de Cuisine of Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen & Bar at Atlantis, The Palm, has an inspiring resume with more than 15 years of experience working in some of the finest hotels and most challenging restaurants round the world. Born to a large Argentinian family, Bartolini realised at a very young age that the culinary world was the place for him. Like many professional chefs, his love of food was fostered during his childhood, when he started cooking with his mother for their weekly family gatherings. He grew up in Buenos Aires where he studied at the Gato Dumas Culinary School. After graduating, Bartolini moved to Ireland for a role as Chef de Partie at Clontarf Castle Hotel and honed his culinary skills across many respected Argentinian and UK kitchens, until joining Gordon Ramsay Holdings at Foxtrot Oscar as Sous Chef in 2008. The following year Bartolini moved to Plane Food at Heathrow Airport, quickly earning the title as Head Chef. During that time the ambitious, hard-working chef also penned a cookbook, “The Food and Cooking of Argentina” which features signature recipes from Argentina and South-America. In 2015, Bartolini was asked to join Bread Street Kitchen & Bar at Atlantis, The Palm, and prepare the team for the grand opening in October. As Chef de Cuisine, he is currently leading a team of 28. Bartolini drives the daily operations of this dynamic kitchen and keeps pushing the team to continuously strive for perfection by improving the quality and consistency of the food. 44 | MAY CONNECTOR

Pack them up! M oving to a new home can be exciting as it gives you a chance to re-decorate and start afresh. But moving house is apparently the third most stressful event in life, particularly when you have kids, pets and just too much stuff! Here’s our handy guide to get you packed up and on the move, with some storage solutions for when you are in between properties or simply for you to pack up those superfluous things.

Make a list Write everything down, though its tedious you’ll be grateful for it later. So, before you pack that first box, create a 46 | MAY CONNECTOR

system that works for you. Whether its numbering each box and listing every item inside in a notebook or noting on each box what’s inside. There’s nothing worse than 20 boxes marked “misc kitchen” when all you wanted was a plate for the pizza and a glass for that much needed grape!

Have plenty of supplies Whether you have decided to move it all yourself or whether you are using a moving company, make sure you have more boxes than you think you will need. Have some set aside for last minute items on moving day, such as bedding, clothes and cleaning supplies. www.connector.ae

Don’t worry about the excess as the moving company will take the boxes with them when they have finished unpacking.

and you have an hour or so spare before they arrive at the new place, only to realise you packed the broom and mop.

Use wardrobe boxes

Use your luggage

Easier than taking everything in your wardrobe from its hanger and folding it into suitcases, is getting the wardrobe boxes. These tall boxes with rails mean everything goes straight from your old wardrobe into the box and into your new wardrobe with minimal fuss. They can be delivered early if you want to make a start before moving day. Make sure you pack them tightly so things don’t fall off their hangers.

Fill luggage and duffle bags with clothes, sheets and towels so that you know where these essentials are when you need them quickly.

Colour coordinate Designate a colour in each room e.g. green for the kitchen, blue for the lounge and so on. Then put the matching colour on the door of each room in the new house - this will make it easier for the movers when they arrive.

Keep things together Make sure that things are kept together when packing, e.g. make sure all the right cables are tied together and kept with the TV. Small, loose parts can be taped to the item or placed in an envelope. Keep the extension cords with appliances, pictures with hooks, brackets with the shelves (and that special wrench that only works on those brackets) are kept together.

Safeguard valuable items It’s a good idea to keep valuable possessions, such as jewellery and treasured items with you. Pack up a separate box and put it in your car. It’s also worth adding important papers to this box - passports, birth certificates, housing contracts, bank and insurance paperwork etc. Keep them with you and keep them safe.

Personal boxes Use clearly labelled or brightly coloured storage boxes for each member of the family. They can be filled with items that they’ll want right away in the new home cosmetics, phones, a favourite teddy bear.

Removal companies If you don’t like the idea of renting a van and doing it yourself, call in the experts and get your stuff packed up and delivered safely.

Pack ahead Anything you can pack before moving day will save you time. Extra bedding and clothes can go in to boxes prior to the big day. Marked clearly and put on the truck last, these things will be the first out when you arrive. This will give you access to these things traight away.

Cleaning supplies If you will be cleaning your old place before you move out, put together a small kit of basics that can be left. It’s annoying when you realise the movers have just left www.connector.ae

Your school guide: The American Curriculum

F

or many parents, deciding which school to enrol your children in and choosing a curriculum that can help them achieve their future goals can be quite the task. In a country as diverse as the UAE, you are bound to find schools that teach different curricula. Dubai alone has over 15 different curricula to choose from, one of which is the American curriculum. Here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding to put your child in an American curriculum school. Like many other curricula, the American system places great importance on both theoretical and extra-curricular learning, in order to achieve balanced educational development for your child. Most American curricula are designed in such a way as to provide children at a young age a well-rounded educational experience 50 | MAY CONNECTOR

by exposing them to all age-appropriate subjects. That way, they are able to have access to a great deal of knowledge needed to develop their interests. “Your child will be consistently engaged in a challenging, collaborative, inquiry-based curriculum, differentiated to help her be successful” says Bridget Justen, Principal of Al-Mizhar American Academy. “The heart of the American curriculum approach to education is a commitment to the development of the whole childfostering growth in knowledge and intellect while also promoting creative, physical, emotional and social development” says Kathryn Miner, Head of School and CEO, GEMS American Academy. As they get older particularly in middle school, the students are introduced to even more subjects such as languages and art www.connector.ae

electives. In the UAE, schools are required to teach their students from an early age both English and Arabic, which makes up the first two languages they are expected to study until they graduate. When the students reach high school, they are given even more subjects they can choose from including more languages, advanced sciences, digital technology and advanced business. Most students take eight subjects from middle school up until they graduate. Students earn a certain number of credits in order to graduate, some of which can then be used to exempt them from taking certain entry-level university courses. “The academic focus exists within a nurturing environment where personal development is fostered and individual interests are encouraged and celebrated” says Bridget. Students attending an American www.connector.ae

curriculum school graduate with an American diploma, which is accepted by all US universities and colleges. It is also becoming increasingly recognised by other higher education institutions that are based on different curricula. However, most students are expected to take other external exams such as the SAT (Standardised Assessment Test) or AP (Advanced Placements), which are administered by the College Board in the US on behalf of all American universities. “American curriculum schools emphasise an inclusive community that inspires and cultivates student engagement, conviction and high achievement and provides for innovative programming broadly utilising current and cutting edge digital technologies that accelerate learning” says Kathryn Miner. Your party planning guide To ensure you plan the perfect party for your child, check out our step-by-step planning guide and follow 10 great tips for a successful party.

T

ry to start planning six weeks before as it will enable you to pull the party together at a relaxed pace. Plus, it means you can purchase party supplies as part of your regular shopping trips, instead of running all over town at the last minute.

Choose a theme

A good party theme provides a framework for your plans and decisions about what kind of invitations, activities, decorations, and food become easier.

When?

One of the biggest factors in selecting a party date and time is determining when your child’s closest friends can attend. It’s difficult to have weekday parties during the school year due to busy schedules so opt for a Friday or Saturday party. Friday gives you Saturday to relax and recover while Saturday gives you all day Friday to prepare. Check the proposed date and time with key friends beforehand. It’s better to select another date than to have your child be disappointed because his or her best friend can’t attend.

Where to have it?

Some advantages to having a party at home include having plenty of time to set up, 52 | MAY CONNECTOR

having all your supplies close at hand and having the party in an environment where your child is comfortable, which is especially important for younger children. Of course, the disadvantages are the cleaning, possible damage, space limitations and lack of builtin entertainment.

Who and how many?

Start with the ‘must invites’, your child’s best friends. If you want to invite additional children add the friends your child sometimes plays with. It’s generally a good idea to invite a few more children than you would ideally like to attend, just in case a couple children have conflicts or are sick the day of the party.

Helpful tips

Involve your child as this is a fun project for you and your child to do together. Plus, involving your child in the party planning will ensure that the party reflects their interests.

Prioritise

There are so many fun things you can do, buy, and make that the party can suddenly become bigger and more elaborate than it really needs to be. This means extra work, extra cost, and probably less fun for all those www.connector.ae

involved. Focus on key things to party fun and when in doubt, put your efforts into games and activities, instead of food and decorations.

while you can! And remember, don’t be too competitive with other parties, it’s all about your child and all about having fun.

Do not spend more than you want or need to. The key pieces of a party; games, activities and fun food can be relatively inexpensive.

From venues, entertainment, decorations and foodie fun there are loads on offer in Dubai. Here are some of Connector’s favourites: Animal Care Centre - Animal Care Centre’s Petting Zoo teaches children how to care and gain a lifelong love and respect for animals. Budget

Plan

Develop your plan and timeline for the party and have back-up ideas in case of a sand storm or a no-show entertainer.

Prepare

Do as much as possible ahead of time so that you will not be in a panic if you get a cold the week before the party or have a huge work project suddenly dropped in your lap.

Be realistic

Don’t think everything has to be perfect, because it probably won’t be. While it is great to check out party planning books or websites for ideas and inspiration, just remember that your party is real life and not a photo shoot. There will always be something you would do differently if you had it to do over again but don’t dwell on it. Also help your child be realistic. The buildup of anticipation in the days before can lead to disappointment. Remind your child that he will still have a great time, even if he doesn’t win every game and doesn’t receive every present he wanted.

Take short cuts

Your ‘I’ll do it myself’ list should focus on the things you have to do, either because they are not available or are too expensive, and the things you really want to do because it will be more fun. Find other things you can purchase ready-made or pay someone else to do.

Be flexible

Even with a great plan, things may not go as you thought. Don’t freak out - just be ready to shift gears and go to Plan B, for example crafts in the garage if the weather turns or a video if the entertainer doesn’t show.

Have fun!

It won’t be that long until your child thinks he/she is too old for parties or just wants to be dropped off at the movies with friends - so enjoy the party hats, silly games and cupcakes www.connector.ae

Is nursery right for your child? Deciding to send your child to nursery can be a difficult decision to make. For many of us that decision is dictated by financial pressures or career demands but regardless of your motive there any may positive reasons that will have a direct impact on your child’s development and their school progression. “There are so many benefits to a nursery education, from developing social skills and making friends to becoming big school ready, a nursery will encourage curiosity and creativity, giving each unique child a fantastic early years’ experience” says Angie Tupling from Jebel Ali Nursery Group.

W

hichever curriculum you choose your nursery will provide a safe learning environment for your child to develop in and enjoy. And though many working parents still feel guilty about leaving their kids, here are some of the benefits and the reasons why you don’t need to worry.

Preparing your child for school Mixing with other children can benefit a child enormously, meaning that they will be better prepared and equipped for starting school. “Nursery not only supports children’s language and listening skills, through meaningful interactions, but also give children their voice and confidence in themselves, preparing them for school” explains Maria Reynolds, Principal at Milestones Nursery. They will be able to adapt more easily to a learning environment, have better social skills and will feel more assured in a new environment. They will also be more confident in relating to adults. At nursery, they will learn to tidy up after themselves and that sometimes they must take turns or wait for things. Having this understanding of what is expected of them, gives them a good idea of how to behave.

Encouraging playtime Nursery gives your child a chance to play and learn within a group and on a one-to-one basis with a member of staff. This helps them to gain confidence and develop their social skills. An active toddler is likely to remain active as they get older, so it is important to encourage a range of activities. Play is vitally important as to help your children to develop coordination, balance and muscle control. Of course, messy play activates are better at nursery rather than at home!

Develop social skills and make friends Socialising is important for a child’s development, they will learn to engage with other kids their age and start to become aware of attachments they feel to other children they spend time with. No matter much time you spend with them there is nothing quite like the excitement they get for other kids. “Children who attend nursery tend to be more skillful in social situations and are further ahead in their personal and emotional development than children who do not attend nursery”adds Maria Reynolds. www.connector.ae

Nationality: Filipino Why did you decide to become a teacher? I never thought I would become a teacher and it was never my dream either, I think it was just destined to be. How would you describe your teaching style? I teach in a way that learning becomes more interesting and interactive. I am more of a facilitator when I am teaching because I want my students to discover the concept rather than just directly teaching it to them. Your best moment as a teacher During a teacher’s day programme, 40 students who I had trained and worked with as their advisor showed their appreciation of my work by performing and dedicating a song to me. Then they all gave me a rose at the end, I was overwhelmed by their appreciation. One sentence of advice to parents? Your kids need support and encouragement when it comes to their school progress. One sentence of advice to someone wanting to enter the profession? Teaching is all about the students. You need to have patience and love for the students to do whatever it takes to help them learn and what we want them to become. What would be your life quote? Every single thing that has ever happened in your life is preparing you for a moment that is yet to come. A funny story from the classroom? It was my birthday, all the students in one of my classes surprised me by wearing a mask with the picture of my favourite actor. Mary Rose Lelis teaches at Mathnasium www.connector.ae

Botox and fillers

- all you need to know

If you typically think of cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery interchangeably you are not alone. However, there are distinctions. Cosmetic surgery is also known as aesthetic surgery and focuses on enhancing appearance.

T

he American Board of Cosmetic Surgery defines cosmetic surgery as “entirely focused on enhancing a patient’s appearance. Improving symmetry, proportion and aesthetic appeal are the primary goals”. Two of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures are Botox and Fillers. We spoke to two experts in the field to find out more…

What is Botox and how does it work? Botox is a drug made from a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum called botulinum toxin. Purified to use in the human body safely it is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically to reduce lines and wrinkles by temporarily relaxing the muscles. Dr Jaffer Khan says that this anti-ageing injection can be used to “treat deep wrinkles which can appear on your forehead, crow’s feet and other 62 | MAY CONNECTOR

signs of ageing. It can also prevent lines from forming in the future”. Dr Sanjay Parashar adds that it can also “reduce episodes of migraine and tension headaches and reduce excessive perspiration in the underarms”.

What does the treatment involve?

The Botox is injected into the skin focusing on the target area, which will be discussed with your doctor. By preventing the muscles from contracting your skin will look smoother and tighter says Dr Khan. “The procedure takes about 10 minutes and the results are visible in 5 to 7 days” says Dr Parashar. While there is no downtime, you should be aware that you may see some slight bruising and swelling directly afterwards. This is due to the needle and can be easily covered by make-up.

Who would this treatment suit?

Botox can be used on a wide range of patients, primarily for skin rejuvenation and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. www.connector.ae

“It is ideally suited for males and females from 25 to 40 years of age with very strong and dynamic lines. In people older than 40 years it may have to be used in combination with other rejuvenating methods to improve the facial lines and sagging” says Dr Parashar.

face, neck, décolletage and hands in people with dry and wrinkly skin.” He added that thicker filler gels are used to fill up deeper lines and are effectively used to volumise the face in people who have lost weight and volume in face resulting into sagging and gaunt look.

Botox is not advisable for those who are pregnant and breastfeeding. Or for those who have medical conditions, such as damaged nerves or muscle complaints. Dr Khan adds that “any patients with motor neuron disease should avoid this treatment”.

The procedure takes around 30 to 45 minutes and you can see the effects up to 18 months after treatment. It is carried out under topical anaesthesia and you may see some mild swelling and bruising for 3 to 4 days depending upon the extent and areas treated says Dr Parashar.

Who should avoid this treatment?

What results does the treatment aim to provide?

Botox is used to soften the lines caused by facial expressions and can be adjusted to ensure a natural looking result. The results are variable between individuals but generally last from three to six months. It is also useful to prevent deep lines in future so works well as preventative method says Dr Parashar. “If used in a strategic method it helps to reduce facial lines, lift a drooping mouth and neck and rejuvenate the face” he adds.

What are Fillers and how do they work? As we age, our cells lose their ability to produce natural collagen and elastin. The skin becomes dryer, thinner and less able to fix itself. When we are born, we have lots of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) in our body, but as we get older our stores of HA diminish, leaving the skin less well supported, and so lines and wrinkles develop. By lifting and smoothing targeted folds and wrinkles by adding subtle volume, fillers can be used to give a fresher look. “Hyaluronic Acid are the most widely used fillers today. They ultimately work by plumping up the target area, increasing the volume and definition and create a lifting effect” says Dr Khan. Fillers are available in different consistencies for a variety of aesthetic purposes says Dr Parashar. “Very thin fillers are hydrating and are used as ‘skin boosters’ to replenish collagen. They can be used in www.connector.ae

What does the treatment involve?

Who would this treatment suit?

Facial fillers can be used on a wide range of people, and are primarily used for skin rejuvenation and to reduce lines and wrinkles. It can also help those looking to add structure and volume to the face. Dr Parashar says that fillers are useful in “young people to preserve skin hydration and collagen and to enhance cheeks, jaw line and lips. In middle aged people, it works well to reduce signs of ageing and boost skin hydration. Whereas in elderly patient it helps to volumise the face and work as nonsurgical face lift to some extent”.

Who should avoid this treatment?

There is no known risk to those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, but it is advised against having treatment. “Generally, fillers are very safe. In thinskinned individuals and who also have a lot of laxity, benefits of fillers may be limited and sometimes there is a risk of lumpiness in the skin” adds Dr Khan.

What results does the treatment aim to provide?

The results should be subtle, leaving friends and family believing that you are simply looking refreshed. “Once the chosen filler is injected into your skin, it will work on the creases and folds, adding volume to the area. It will help the skin to appear firmer and tighter, ensuring you are left with a fresh and rejuvenated look” says Dr Khan. CONNECTOR MAY | 63

HD Brows & LVL lashes @ Browz

Some serious overplucking when I was a teenager left me with threadbare brows which only seemed to get worse as I got older. Couple that with my blond eyelashes and it’s no wonder I look permanently tired without make-up! So I went to see if the experts could help.

What’s involved? Gemma could tell I was nervous so she explained everything first and started slowly so the effects would be more gradual. In simple terms, High Definition Brows (HD) is tinting, waxing and threading with a specially designed formula to give you perfectly defined brows. First the best shape for my face was measured, the tint was added and left on for a few minutes. Then Gemma used a combination of threading and waxing to take away all the little hairs and tidy up my look. Even if you have sparse areas, Browz can work with you on a re-growth programme to help you achieve the perfect brows and teach you how to fill in the gaps while they are growing. Then it was on to the lashes, LVL Lashes 64 | MAY CONNECTOR

is a revolutionary new treatment especially designed to resolve your eyelash troubles for good. LVL stands for Length-VolumeLift. One of the many reasons it has risen to popularity is the fact that all you need are your natural lashes, so no fiddling with the falsies. More advanced and efficient than traditional lash perms, LVL straightens the eyelashes out from the root and allowing them to reach their fullest potential by looking longer and thicker. You lie back for about 45 minutes; your therapist adds the tint and the treatment and leaves it to set.

What are the results? Big eyes! My eyebrows looked more defined and much thicker and less sparse then normal. While my eyelashes looked long and thick, so much so that I don’t really feel like I need make-up! Result!

How much? HD Browz are priced at Dhs 300. LVL Lashes are priced at Dhs 390. Browz is located in The Mall, Jumeirah Road. Call 04-3214828 for appointments. - L.C. www.connector.ae

Colour, cut & blow dry @ Say Hair Salon

When I first moved to Dubai 11 years ago it never occurred to me that finding someone to cut and colour my fine blond hair would be an issue. Those first few years saw me go through some pretty interesting colours and cuts, all of which were met with a bewildered ‘what have you done now?’ wail from the husband. So, when my go-to colour specialist Patrick, opened the doors to his first salon I’d descended before he’d had time to plug in a hairdryer! Located at Viceroy Palm Jumeirah, Say Hair Salon is the uber chic little hideaway for all your hair needs. Here you’ll find a mixture of the best of western and middle eastern hairdressing with 50% of the staff western and 50% Arabic. There’s a huge colour bar with over 360 intermixable shades from some of the best brands including L’Oreal and Wella. A private room is available, and you can get your nails glitzed at the same time. Say understand the best products for their client’s hair, they use a mix of carbon and ammonia free, sulphate and paraben free products and even ship the foil they use for colours in from the UK.

& Tried

What’s involved? After a brief conversation about the colour I usually let Patrick guide me, it’s generally a mix of highlights and lowlights. The strands he picks up for the foils are fine and intricately weaved which always guarantees a really natural looking colour. In need of a haircut I was totally willing to let Nino wield his scissors and I was glad I did.

What are the results? Absolutely fabulous colour, cut and style! I love it, the colour is perfect for my skin tone and the shape is great. For me a really good cut means that I can style it myself quite easily, and I can. I had quite a few compliments after this dynamic duo worked their magic!

How much? Prices start from 350 for a cut and blow dry, Dhs 320 for a root colour, Dhs 450 for a full colour, Dhs 420 for half head highlights and Dhs 480 for full head highlights. Call 04-4318951 or 058-2531831 for appointments. -L.C.

Your smile

66 | MAY CONNECTOR

www.connector.ae

We all know the secret behind the perfect, gleaming smiles of some of our favourite celebs. Cosmetic dentistry is a big business in our image conscious society. Teeth are one of the first things you notice about someone and first impressions can be lasting impressions.

C

osmetic dentistry has changed over the last two decades says Dr Reiner Koschitzke, (DDS) General Dentist. “Today the focus is on minimally invasive esthetical improvements to generally healthy teeth. So, the most common cosmetic dental treatments are adhesive bonding and contour enhancements following teeth straightening and whitening.”

Teeth whitening Losing the colour of your teeth is unfortunately part of the ageing process, they start to change colour from our teenage years. Genetics also play a part in white teeth, so if your parents teeth are yellowing, the chances are yours will too. Whitening can also be used to remove stains caused by food, drink and tobacco without harming the teeth. Whitening can be done in-office or at home, though some people prefer to bleach their teeth at home because although it may take a little longer, it is more convenient. When performed by your dentist whitening is more intense and gives a faster result, but the intensity is not always suitable for those with sensitive teeth. The at home teatment usually takes between two and four weeks, depending on the desired shade you wish to achieve. While whitening in the dentist may call for one or more 45-minute to one-hour visits to achieve the desired shade. “The big advantage of this technique is that the bleaching can be finalised in an hour. The effect though might not be long lasting and the whole procedure needs to be repeated” says Dr Costa, Specialist Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon at SameDay Dental Clinic. Both in office and home bleaching techniques are safe methods to whiten teeth and predictable results can be expected says Dr Reiner. Most patients decide on home www.connector.ae

whitening products with custom made whitening trays which allow for regular and convenient application of whitening gels. However, the most important advantage of home whitening systems is that sensitivities can be controlled more easily by using lower percentage bleaching gels he added. “With at home whitening the bleaching gel gradually releases oxygen which causes the bleaching effect. Obviously, the results with this method are not instantaneous but they are more long lasting and if needed to be repeated the same bleaching trays can be use again” says Dr Costa.

Bonding Tooth bonding, or dental bonding, uses a tooth-coloured resin which is applied to the tooth then hardened using a special light. This bonds the resin to the tooth either to restore it or to improve its appearance. “The dentist applies the same composite material which is used for the restoration of dental cavities. By bonding the composite material onto the existing teeth, the shape of them can be modified or a diastema (gap) between two teeth can be minimised or completely closed. Bonding is considered to be a conservative way of doing cosmetic dentistry” says Dr Costa, Specialist Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon at SameDay Dental Clinic.

Veneers “Dental veneers are cosmetic restorations mostly made from ceramic materials which improve the look of the front teeth. There are two types of veneers available the traditional veneer technique where a significant reduction of the facial aspect of teeth is required, and so called ‘contact lens veneers’ which are ultra-thin and therefore require only very little, sometimes no preparation of healthy teeth. Traditional CONNECTOR MAY | 67

Health & fitness

veneers are used in cases of single tooth restorations and severely discoloured teeth whereas contact lens veneers are often produced in full smile design treatments says Dr Reiner. A veneer is a facing that can be placed on the front of a tooth to improve its shape and colour explains Dr Costa. A veneer can be made either from ceramic material or resin composite material. Usually ceramic materials are better looking but are more difficult to handle. If they break they cannot be repaired in a predictable way and most of the time need to be replaced. Composite veneers are easier to handle, can be easily repaired if they break but do stain more easily compared to ceramic materials he added. Lumineers are similar to veneers but they are made of a patented technology which enables them to be made very thin so that you do not have to shave off the natural surface of your teeth to create the space for the veneer, says Dr Joy. Since they are very thin they can be applied over the teeth without altering the teeth and create a beautiful smile that you require. 68 | MAY CONNECTOR

However, lumineers are not for every case and need to be diagnosed by dentist who is experienced in lumineers to check if you are a suitable candidate he stated.

Straightening Cosmetic straightening and orthodontics address crowded or irregular teeth, however orthodontic treatment is preferred more than cosmetic treatment because the natural teeth are moved into alignment without changing the structure of your teeth. The only disadvantage with orthodontic treatment is that it takes a longer time but results are much healthier in the long term says Dr Joy. For patients who are not willing to wait for orthodontic treatment and want instant results, then they can try cosmetic solutions for a smile makeover, however this has to be assessed and decided by cosmetic dentist because if it involves too much of removal of healthy tooth structure it can cause problems in future. “Also, cosmetic treatments generally cannot correct bite problems and other dental alignments problems and need to be assessed very carefully before doing it added Dr Joy. www.connector.ae

Dr Reiner explains that the term “cosmetic teeth straightening” refers to treatments that use braces and primarily focus on the visibly aesthetic alignment of the teeth. That is why such treatments belong to the repertoire of cosmetic dentists - as often the straightening of teeth is the better alternative to a heavy crown or veneer preparation. Since almost invisible braces such as Invisalign clear aligners are available nowadays, patients decide for brace treatments more often because there are no brackets and wires are required. The pros and cons of cosmetic teeth straightening should be discussed as part of a comprehensive treatment planning.

Invisalign We spoke to Dr Diego Peydro visiting doctor at the Invisalign Center (www. invisaligncenter.ae) to get the lowdown on the popular treatment Invisalign. Invisalign is the clear alternative to braces that does not interfere with your

www.connector.ae

lifestyle. “In my 15 years’ experience as an orthodontist I prefer to treat my patients with Invisalign” states Dr Peydro. The fact that that they are removable allows my patients to maintain good oral hygiene whilst with braces you have to make sure that no remaining food gets stuck between the wires and brackets he says. “The advanced technology and the 3D simulation allows me as a doctor to plan the treatment very efficiently. My patients can see before starting the treatment how their teeth could look like after the treatment” states Dr Peydro. “The benefits of Invisalign aligners are that they are nearly invisible, comfortable and removable. Whereas the benefits of having straight teeth go beyond confidence. Straight teeth can improve your oral health immensely. Being an experienced doctor, I am confident to treat almost any malocclusion with Invisalign. Technically anything that can be treated with traditional braces can be also treated with Invisalign.”

Fire up your metabolism

We all have that one friend who can eat her own body weight’s worth of food in one sitting and not see it on the scales! That’s because she has a fast metabolism - the rate at which your body turns what you drink and eat into energy. If you are like most of us and struggle with slow metabolism, try adding these quick boosters to your daily routine and finally take control of your metabolism.

Avoid crash diets Crash diets help you lose weight fast but you also lose muscle mass which slows down your metabolism says Nadine Aoun, Clinical Dietician. The final result is your body burns fewer calories and gains weight faster than before the diet.

Start the day right Your parents were right when they told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Having something to eat shortly after you wake up will wake up your metabolism. Charlotte Cummins, MSc Clinical Nutritionist & Health Coach at Blue Lights Dubai says “It’s true; breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is the first meal after your body has been fasting all night and what you choose to feed your body can set you up for the day!” Try to include some fresh fruit, lean protein and wholegrains. All of which are essential in our diet. “If you skip breakfast” says Nadine 70 | MAY CONNECTOR

“your body goes into starvation mode so your metabolism slows to conserve energy. According to some studies people who skip breakfast had 4.5 times the risk of obesity”.

Add Omega-3 to your diet Eating lots of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help fuel your metabolism, try salmon, tuna, mackerel and herring. Omega3s regulate metabolism by balancing your blood sugar and reducing your resistance to the hormone leptin, which has been linked to fat burning. Need a less fishy alternative, then add walnuts, chia seeds or flaxseed oil into your diet. You should also add some good sources of protein says Nadine. “Your body burns more calories digesting protein than it does eating fat or carbohydrates. Replacing some carbs with lean protein rich foods can boost metabolism at mealtimes. Try lean beef, turkey, fish, white meat chicken, beans and eggs.” www.connector.ae

Graze through the day Eating smaller meals throughout the day, instead of three main ones, is a proven strategy of keeping the hunger pangs at bay. Victoria Tipper, Nutrition Coach at Dubai Herbal & Treatment Centre explains that “many people restrict their calorie intake considerably in order to lose weight but this can actually cause a drop in metabolism as the body perceives it as starvation and slows everything down to conserve energy. So ensuring you eat regular meals and fuel your body adequately is a must”.

Avoid trans fats While you should not totally cut fats from your diet, trans fats should definitely be avoided. Trans fats bind to liver cells and fat in the body, slowing your metabolism and increasing your resistance to insulin and inflammation. All of which can cause you to gain weight. Choosing the right foods is essential says Charlotte. “You can be doing great exercise every day but a diet high in fat and saturated fat and excess calories will not work well for your metabolism. We need at least 5 fruit and vegetables every day. Fruit and vegetables contain essential nutrients that keep our body working to the best of its ability. Try to eat at least 5 fruit and vegetables every day and choose a variety of colours”.

Up your workout intensity Exercise is well-known to improve your metabolism says Nadine. “It increases the amount of muscle you have and the more muscle you have, the faster your BMR will be.” Changing your workout routine regularly will prevent your body from getting used to your workout, which is often the cause of a weight loss plateau. So at your next session in the gym, try ramping up the intensity of your cardio workout for 30-second intervals, returning to your normal pace afterwards. For example, run for 30-seconds and then jog for one minute. Repeat the entire sequence at least 5 times, this will rev up your metabolism for the rest of the day. www.connector.ae

Charlotte suggests that you “work with your nutritionist to assess your calories allowance and reset goals. As you are hitting your targets and your muscle mass and body fat changes so does your nutritional and fitness requirements. You should aim to change your exercise and food plan every six weeks as your body adapts”.

Train with weights While hours of cardio may help burn fat, muscle training is needed to really shed the weight. Though muscle does weigh more than fat, it uses more energy. That is because cardio workouts only burn fat while doing them. However, your muscles will continue to burn fat for hours after strength training. Studies have shown that you can increase your resting metabolism by 100 calories a day if your workout using weights for 30 to 40 minutes a week. “The best thing to boost metabolism is to build muscle through strength and resistance training because muscle burns more calories at rest than anything else, so the more muscle you have the more calories you burn whilst doing nothing. Strength training also gives us a boost of testosterone and growth hormone which boost metabolism, even for us ladies. High intensity interval training (HIIT) is also great to develop a faster metabolism as it increases growth hormone and boost muscle mass” says Victoria. When we train, particularly resistance training, we can build up muscle mass. Building muscle mass is a great way to increase your metabolism. “The more muscle your body has the more calories you will need to keep that muscle working. This means you can add extra calories to your overall calorie allowance” says Charlotte.

Drink water Lastly, Nadine adds drink more water. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that drinking water increases metabolic rate by 30% in healthy women and men. CONNECTOR MAY | 71

How to quit smoking

- permanently

The first thing people ask is whether it really is possible to quit smoking without using willpower or mentally beating themselves up by reminding themselves of all the bad things they are inhaling. The answer is yes, it is possible. Contrary to popular belief, you are actually not as addicted to smoking, as you are to the emotions that are involved in the act and ritual of smoking. This is the same reason why all those tobacco substitution products most often do not work to create permanent change.

L

et’s start by looking at how the mind works. We experience the world through our five senses being visual, auditory, touch, taste and smell. As we experience an event, the amount of data is too much to be useful. So, our minds filter it to enable us to focus on extracting meaning. We do this by distorting, generalising and deleting the information we take in. Based on these filters we then develop an internal emotional state-of-being, which is positive, neutral or negative. From this state, we are driven to behave in a particular way that will benefit us. With smoking, this could be having a cigarette to relieve stress, counter nervousness or increase confidence. It is sometimes a difficult concept to grasp but all behaviours, however bad, are motivated by a good intention for the person doing them. From our external behaviour, we then get a result which influences our comprehension and from that, we start to construct even more unconscious filters in the form of values, beliefs, reactions, identity, personality, culture and so on. Once those are formed, our five senses then come back into play and through a further filtering process called the Reticular Activating System, we then start experiencing evidence that backs up our beliefs and values, deepening the pattern of our thinking. These patterns that make up our unconscious programmes begin to form from pre-birth, as soon as our sensory organs have developed. By understanding the structure of these programmes, I then work with clients on any aspect of their programme that is stopping them from achieving their goals. The majority of unconscious programmes are dependent on events that were experienced before the age of seven years old. This is because our conscious mind is only fully developed by then. It is fascinating to think that the seeds of our adult behaviours beliefs are sown long so early in childhood. The interesting thing with smoking, is that it is a behaviour that is picked up much later in life, typically when a child hits puberty. A recent survey conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention on Tobacco www.connector.ae

Use Among Middle and High School Students in the US between 2011 and 2015 stated that 46% of high school student had tried a tobacco product. In the same survey, 90% of cigarette smokers started before the age of 18 years and 99% before the age of 26 years. This is great news for those wanting to quit. Most smokers can pinpoint their first experience and bring up the emotions of that time. Once recognised, we work on disconnecting the emotions from the cigarette and you are finally able to experience a cigarette for the chemicals it contains. Just like a non-smoker would if they were trying to smoke. Quitting becomes the result of eliminating the emotional drivers without the need for willpower or tobacco replacement products. However, victory does not come easily without preparation. Whether you choose to quit using willpower or with professional support, here are five simple steps to help increase your success. 1. Book a day in the diary that you commit to as your stop smoking day. 2. To boost motivation, list all the reasons you can think of for wanting to stop. The rank them in order of what is the most important to you. Refer back as necessary. 3. The list all the immediate benefits that you will appreciate once you have stopped. Again, rank them in order of what is most important. Refer back as necessary. 4. Spend a week or two before that day journaling your emotions just before each cigarette. This develops your emotional intelligence through being mindfully aware of every cigarette you smoke, your emotions and the kind of events that could be triggers. 5. Once you recognise the emotional needs that are driving you to smoke, you can start planning how you can meet those needs with alternative activities. Think mind, body and soul. People would walk by her and not even notice she was there or maybe they just assumed she was dead as her lifeless body was laying on the street next to a dustbin outside Almaya Supermarket in Al Satwa. Until one kind person could not just walk by, she had to make sure Almaya had really gone and to her surprise she was hadn’t. Almaya was rushed to the vet. She tested FPV positive and was put on IV fluids and medication. At first Almaya had no appetite but after a few days she started eating and the vet could take her off the fluids.
