EDITOR’S NOTE
Welcome back to those who have just returned from their summer holidays and hello to those who have just picked up their first issue of Connector. As you’ll see, we’ve had a bit of a makeover - redesigned and reimagined – and we’d love to get your feedback, so do write in to us at editor@connector-dubai.com. August is typically a time for making decisions as we near the end of summer and head into the final stretch of the year. In this issue, we look at the importance of ‘Will registration for you and your family,’ ‘10 Questions To Ask Your Cosmetic Surgeon’ and we reveal the health check-ups you should schedule in each decade of your life in our ‘Decades of Wellness’ feature. If that wasn’t enough we also ask if you know the difference between your duck and your goose down in our ‘Art of Sleeping’ feature. We did warn you…it’s all about the decisions. In case you haven’t travelled out this summer, the Eid Al Adha break is an opportunity to do so. To help you plan in advance, we’ve done all the leg work and rounded up the best staycation offers around. Plus, we’ve put together a list of the best steakhouses for the carnivores and some super dining offers for the rest of you. If shopping is your thing, we have shortlisted our favourite products in beauty, accessories, watches and jewellery. Enjoy the issue and remember you can connect with us through Facebook and Instagram!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thank you to chef Roberto Segura for his crispy calamari recipe. I’m not a brilliant cook so always look for easy recipes and this was one of them. Made it as a side dish for Friday lunch and it was delicious. Hoping to try the ceviche the next time. - Hayley Paye
Raising three kids isn’t as difficult as finding stuff for them to do over the holidays. Thankfully the list of things to do with the kids was helpful. To be honest, my husband and I enjoyed Bounce as much as the kids did. Looking forward to more articles like these. Good luck! - Darina A
Dear Louise, thank you for recommending the Kocostar’s rose mask sheet. In this intense heat, these little slices are quite cooling. I use them every now and then and it leaves my skin feeling baby soft. It’s surely going in my toiletry bag when I travel next month. Kim Cooper
Hi Louise…I am new to Dubai and happy I came across Connector. Was thrilled to see the list of Italian restaurants because my sister and I are die-hard fans of the cuisine. This has become our Italian restaurants bucket list and we hope to try as many as we can this year. - Leena Dsouza

The Hide There’s not much to fault about this American eatery in Jumeirah Al Qasr. The casual space, created with polished wood and exposed brick pillars, gives red meat the attention it deserves. Its menu is vast but focuses on the ‘forgotten cuts’. Whether you choose the flat iron steak with a Korean marinade and kimchi; the hanger steak with caramelised onion and fried duck egg; or the flank steak with thyme Portobello mushrooms, you’ll just be glad you dined here. Open from 6pm to 11.30pm. Call 04-3666750.
Ruth’s Chris Steak House A quick browse on the internet and you’ll learn this American brand has 140 locations worldwide and like the rest, this one at Dubai Marina delights. Buzzing on most days of the week, the restaurant’s dinner tables are dressed in white table cloths, furniture is dark and lighting is dim. What do you need to know about the steaks here? They serve only the finest aged, corn-fed USDA prime beef with a cooking process that involves broiling it in a trademark 1,800 degrees oven and then serving it on a plate heated to 500 degrees. Open from 5.30pm to 2am. Call 04-4549538. #connectordubai
DINING OUT SoHo Bar & Grill The New York-style bar and grill at Century Village has dished out some award-winning food (i.e: steaks). A casual space that offers al fresco dining in the winter (with Jenga blocks on each table), SoHo’s menu is sure to bring a smile to any meat-loving person’s face. What sets this place apart though is its SoHo Stone offering where diners can cook the meat to their liking at the table. Open from 12pm to 1am. Call 04-2868520.
Entrecôte Café de Paris Don’t expect an extensive menu. Entrecote Café de Paris, set amid the waterfalls at The Dubai Mall, offers diners a set menu that includes 200g of steak (your choice of New Zealand, Australian Angus or Wagyu beef), a green salad and homemade fries. The highlight of the meal is the secret sauce that covers the steak. From what we know… it is flown in from Geneva, the city where the brand was born. Open from 12pm to 12am. Call 04-4340122.
Prime Steakhouse If you want to ‘celebrate over steak’, Prime Steakhouse ticks all boxes. The elegant venue at The Meydan Hotel offers fantastic cuts of meat in a beautiful setting (some seats offering views of the race course). Not only is the quality of the meat top notch, it tastes delicious too. If there’s something we’d come back for, it would be the Chateaubriand steak. Open from 7pm to 11.30pm. GOOD FOOD Poached Canadian Lobster with Dashi and Asparagus For 2 people Ingredients 1 Fresh Canadian Lobster (500g-600g) 1 bunch White asparagus 100 grams Dashi powder (Japanese fish stock) 1 Liter Water or Classic fish stock 1 handful Sprouts (example Beetroot sprouts) 200 g Butter - poached 20ml Cream Method Partially cook or blanch the lobster in a fish stock for appx 2 min. Using the back of a large knife, crack the lobster shell, and remove the meat while it’s still hot from the shell. Drain any excess water and place the lobster in a shallow pan. Pour the melted butter over the meat and set to the one side. Cut and remove one
inch off the bottom stalk of the asparagus. Peel the bottom of the stalk (half of the stalk) and poach the asparagus in boiling water with sea salt for about 10 minutes. Remove asparagus from the water and set aside until ready to serve. Place 100 grams of Dashi powder in a pan with 250 ml of water and reduce slightly, add the cream and reduce again. Place the tray of lobster in the oven for 2-3 minutes at 200C. Poach asparagus back in boiling water to re-heat. To serve: Place asparagus in a bowl, add lobster chunks on top and finish with the sauce. Garnish with sprouts and beet leaves.
Chef Alexis Tips: A perfectly” FULLY” cooked lobster takes 4 minutes to cook (for the tail) in boiling stock or water and 5 minutes for the claws. To check if asparagus are cooked, poke with a small knife through the stalk. If it slides back out with ease, it is cooked To emulsify, use the aid of a hand mixer, tilt the pan forward, add a knob of butter and blitz. Use only the foam. Do not use any salt in the dish since the stock is already salted.

Will registration for you and your family Sean Hird, Director, DIFC Wills & Probate Registry, explains why the Registry is the definitive option for non-Muslim residents and investors in Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah
T here is a common concern amongst people living in Dubai - a critical question we hear time and again, and one that we are ready to demystify once and for all. If you have children, if you have money sitting in the bank, if you own a car or even own property here, you are likely to be one of those asking the vital question how do I protect my family and my assets if I die, and what is the most secure option when registering a Will in Dubai?
The first is a Will registered in your home 42 AUGUST CONNECTOR
country - this is known here as a Foreign Will. The second is called a Notarised Will, which is authenticated as a verified document by a Notary Public. Even if you possess a Foreign or Notarised Will, your assets and the guardianship of your children would almost certainly be governed by Sharia Law. If you choose to contest the process, it could take up to two years of lengthy and costly legal proceedings. Since May 2015, residents and investors in Dubai have a third option provided by the DIFC Wills & Probate Registry which is accepted by the Dubai Courts. This is a first of its kind service in the MENA region, enabling the registration of an #connectordubai

The second conversation is all about practical advice and information that your loved ones might need to know if you are no longer there. Have you agreed with your partner on what would happen to your children if one or both of you passes away? Do family members back home know passwords, where the spare key is kept, and the phone number of your nanny, office or next door neighbour? These are small things, but may have big consequences if unknown in times of stress and grief.
The Registry allows eligible people - nonMuslim parents, property owners and asset holders over 21 years old - to determine how their assets are distributed and who will care for their children. The Art
Of Sleeping Brush up on your pillow talk, as we reveal options and bust jargon for the ultimate good night’s sleep
Mattress
Experts recommend changing your mattress every seven years to ensure optimum support and sleep quality… Innerspring: This uses steel coils inside to support you while you sleep, which is then padded for comfort. Look for mattresses with the greatest number of coils as the more points of support it offers, the better night’s sleep you’ll have. Memory Foam: Also known as viscoelastic 46 AUGUST CONNECTOR
mattresses, this variation uses a highdensity polyurethane foam both in the support system and the layer of upholstery, which allows the mattress to contour around the sleeper. Gel: As its name suggests, this variety of mattress comes filled with a gel added to the foam within the support system. And within the gel family of mattresses, you can opt for gels which offer different comfort levels, textures and also heat dissipation. #connectordubai

Under the sheets
Give your bed linen cupboard a boost by brushing up on the terminology of sheets‌
Thread Count: This refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch of fabric, with a higher thread count meaning higher quality sheets. Single-Ply or TwoPly: Plying is when more than one strand of material is twisted together to create a single thread. Two-ply fabrics are heavier than single-ply, but the quality of the fabric used should be the overriding factor when considering ply. Weave: The most common types of weave are percale, also known as plain weave and soft and smooth to the touch; flannel, soft and pliable and made with a plain or twill weave, and sateen, the smoothest of the weaves, thanks to the four-tread technique used to create it. www.connector.ae

Pillow Talk
Get your head around these different pillow types, before you get your head down on them… Synthetic: The cheapest of the bunch, synthetic pillows are versatile enough for many different sleeping styles, but won’t last as long as their pricier counterparts. Memory Foam: A memory foam pillow acts in the same way as its mattress 48 AUGUST CONNECTOR
counterpart, shaping closely to the sleeper’s head. On the negative side, they can be expensive and lack good ventilation. Feather: These pillows are super soft thanks to their natural filling, durable and long lasting. However you may have to contend with the occasional feather quill poking through, and they’re not recommended for allergy sufferers. #connectordubai
HOME & GARDEN
Duvet Design
It’s all about the fill when it comes to selecting your desired duvet‌ Feather and Down: If you crank up the air con in the bedroom, but want to stay warm in bed, opt for a feather and down filled duvet. Ones with a higher percentage of down are lighter, with feather-heavy options denser. Wool: It might sound odd to buy a wool-filled duvet in such a hot country, but its ability to retain air, means it can remove excess heat and moisture when you get too warm, with the added bonus that they are hypoallergenic. Synthetic: A popular (and cheap) duvet option, if you go synthetic, experts recommend opting for microfiber or hollowfibre, with the former akin to a feather and down duvet, and the latter thicker and longer lasting.

school fees Every parent wants their child to have the best possible education, but choosing a school in Dubai comes with many hurdles. The biggest one is, of course, the school fees.
A ccording to research, private school fees in Dubai can vary by more than Dhs 600,000 per year depending on where you live. A report by educational portal Edarabia and real estate website Bayut revealed that Jumeirah Village Circle, Nad Al Sheba, and Arabian Ranches were the top three areas where school fees are most expensive, with average fees up to Dhs 850,000 for all year groups. With the KHDA recently stating that private schools in Dubai collected Dhs 6.8 billion in tuition fee revenue in the 2016 to 17 academic year, Dhs 700 million more than the previous year you can see why the expected hike was met with disbelief by many parents. Special
educational needs How can you identify if a child has any additional needs at different stages in their life
M others will usually notice when their children are struggling in areas of their development and this often happens when they see them talking, running or playing with other children in the same age bracket. However it’s important to understand that these signs may just indicate the need for some specific short term help rather than their child having severe long term special educational needs. When the situation goes unaddressed, it may result in that child not achieving the level of their potential, it may lead them to under-perform at school or develop low self esteem and a lack of confidence. This can result in emotional or behavioral responses such as withdrawing altogether and disengaging from learning.

The specific areas in which children may need additional support can include something as minor as handwriting difficulties, poor confidence in social play, weaknesses in understanding instructions or even problems with visual tracking when reading. When it comes to motor skills, they might not be able to pick up toys to play with, they may not be able to feed themselves, write or coordinate their movements. According to experts in the field of early childhood education, children are expected to have developed a specific set of developmental skills at different stages in their early years. 10 Questions
to ask your cosmetic surgeon
From their experience to their UAE credentials, and from the recovery times to the costs, the 10 things you should ask before that nip, tuck, plump or pluck… When it comes to cosmetic surgery, business is booming in the UAE, with the number of surgeons licensed in the region and the number of procedures carried out increasing every year. And while procedures might exist these days which would have been unfathomable even a few years ago - eyebrow transplant, anyone? - one thing remains consistent: that you should do your homework before getting any form of cosmetic surgery. While the modern preference might be to embark on an epic Googling session, quiz friends who’ve had surgery or trawl YouTube and Instagram for bloggers’ honest low downs on their tucks and 60 AUGUST CONNECTOR
tweaks, nothing beats comprehensive medical advice. We spoke to some of the leading cosmetic surgeons in the UAE to discover why they think these are the most important questions you can ask them…
1 Is the surgeon licensed by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA)? If you’re looking to enhance your pout or Botox away those frown lines, you should only choose to have your procedure performed by professionals who are licensed by the DHA. This not only means you can count on some recourse if you wish to lodge a complaint, but also that you won’t fall foul of illegal procedures which can involve materials or techniques not approved for use in the UAE. “Being licensed is significant proof that warrants patient’s safety, allowing them to accept any procedure or treatment without putting themselves at risk,” says Dr. Patricia #connectordubai

7 What are the potential risks and complications? This is a question that you should raise in your initial consultation and in any subsequent consultations, as during this time you can also cover what will happen if you develop a problem post-surgery. Asking about potential risks should also have the effect of helping you feel more confident with your surgeon as they talk you through their procedure in the event that issues may arise.
8 Where will the surgery take place? A question worth asking in case the surgery won’t be taking place where you have your consultations, and also so you have time to check if the establishment is an accredited surgery facility. It may also give patients peace of mind to know where the nearest hospital is, in case of severe complications. 9 What do I need to do to prepare for surgery? any risk is minimised ahead of time. Asking this question will help the surgeon highlight any factors in your lifestyle that you might need to change in case they affect the outcome. For example, you may need to stop smoking or alcohol intake, lose weight or stop medications you are taking.
10 What happens if I’m not happy with the results? An important question that will shed light on a few things: firstly the procedures the surgeon and clinic has in place for unsatisfied customers, and also your own personal expectations of the outcome of surgery. Additionally, this question will help you to discover how long the expected recovery period is - for example, rhinoplasty can take up to eight months to ‘settle’ - as your surgeon will tell you not to assess the results until the swelling goes down and you schedule follow-up consultations.
“Knowing the full scope of the procedure will guarantee with assurances that if an unfortunate incident takes place, there will always be solutions or second option,” Dr. Patricia Linn Eby, Specialist Plastic Surgeon at Medstar Day Surgery Center. #connectordubai

Decades
of wellness Your metabolic rate may slow down as you get older, but that doesn’t mean you have to. From your carefree twenties to your adventurous sixties and beyond, ensure good health remains a constant as we reveal the tests and check-ups you should schedule in each decade of your life…
In Your 20s… They might be the most responsibilityfree years of your adult life, but taking care of yourself in your twenties can pay huge health dividends further down the road. One of the most important checkups you should get are for your cervical health, which means booking in for that all-important smear test. These check for abnormal cell changes in your cervix, which can be pretty common, but which allow your doctor to investigate further if required. Another test, which you can usually ask your doctor to perform along with your smear is a breast check-up
64 AUGUST CONNECTOR
to look for abnormalities in the breast. Although breast cancer is relatively rare in younger women, it’s not unheard of, so as well as visiting the doctor, be sure to regularly self-examine too. Finally, as a Millennial, you probably spend a lot of your waking time in front of screens, be it Netflix, your phone or your work laptop, all of which makes an eye test de rigueur in your twenties. And although eyesight quality begins to decrease around the age of 40, thanks to our tech-heavy lifestyles eye strain has become a common problem for twentysomethings.
#connectordubai
HEALTH & WELLBEING In Your 30s… Your thirties are a great time to check on your cholesterol, which is a high factor in heart disease, which last year became the number one cause of death in the UAE. You’ll need a blood test to undergo this check-up, and you’re looking for a result below 130. If it’s higher, you should schedule annual tests. Another important test to have in your thirties is blood pressure. At a time in a woman’s life when her career makes big strides and she may be
considering marriage and children, as well as juggling a million other things, it’s important to keep an eye on your blood pressure, as a high reading could lead to problems with your kidneys or even a stroke. Sexual health should also remain a priority, and you should get tested for HPV - Human Papillomavirus - a sexually transmitted disease which, although virtually symptom-free, can cause cervical cancer. And you can get the test at the same time as you have your pap smear.
In Your 40s… While you might be as active as you were in your twenties and thirties, now is the decade to start stepping on the scale and taking note of where the needle falls. The metabolism slows down as you age, with weight gain, especially around the waist, a potential precursor to diabetes and heart disease, which makes a weight check up with your doctor a good idea. Cholesterol and blood pressure should be checked in your forties too, and add in a blood sugar test, as weight fluctuations due to hormonal changes can put
pressure on your pancreas, putting you at risk of diabetes. Pap smears and breast examinations are more vital than ever, as your risk of breast cancer is heightened between the ages of 40 and 70. Be sure to get your moles checked out on a regular basis too, as well as eye tests, during which your optician can not only check for short or long sightedness, but also for the likes of presbyopia, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Lastly, it’s worth speaking to your doctor about having the vaccinations you had as a child and teenager boosted with tetanus, diphtheria and pneumonia shots the most highly requested.

Motherhood and back pain
THE SOLUTION IS FINALLY HERE!
Motherhood is one of the greatest and precious gifts of life. However at the same time it also comes with a lot of challenges which at times can make you feel overwhelmed and insecure on what would be best to do. Taking care of a new born child is a joy and a task on its own which sometimes can take a toll on your back, shoulder or arms. And when you are also breast feeding, you have a very specific challenge. No matter how gloomy this problem may look there is now a drug-free way to relieve your pain. OMRON has a drug free pain reliever that helps you to relieve pain without the use of medication and best of all: it has hardly any side effects. HEALTH & WELLBEING In Your 50s… Staying fabulous at fifty requires work and effort, and you can start by scheduling a full physical examination, which will give your doctor the chance to ascertain any areas of your health you need to improve on. It’s important to note that although your childbearing years may be behind you, that regular pap smears are still to be scheduled. A waist circumference measurement and BMI test will determine how likely you are to develop diabetes, heart disease or metabolic syndrome. If you have a circumference of over 35 inches, it’s worth
requesting a C-reactive protein test, which tests for blood inflammation and potential heart disease. A pelvic exam will check the condition of your uterus, cervix, ovaries and rectum, and this is certainly the decade for getting some blood work done. A glucose test will check for diabetes, while Blood Urea Nitrogen and Creatinine tests will check how your kidneys are functioning. Entering your fifties can also see your thyroid become underactive, and it’s recommended to get it tested as you enter this decade; as is a bone density test which is done using an x-ray called the DXA scan.
In Your 60s… Weight gain is a huge issue as you get older as muscle is replaced by fat, which then collects around the waist, all while your metabolism is slowing down; therefore it’s vital to keep up your exercise routine and to watch your diet. The risk of colorectal cancer increases in your fifties and sixties, with screening recommended well into your seventies, which includes blood testing and a colonoscopy. The risk of breast cancer increases with age, so annual mammograms are highly
recommended. Now is also the time to schedule in regular hearing tests, with hearing quality decreasing from the age of 65 onwards. Osteoporosis becomes a factor as you get older, and can mean risking permanent disability from even a minor fracture if you don’t stay on top of your bone health. As you have throughout your life, a visit to the dentist remains important. However, it’s not just your teeth they’ll check, as your oral health can be an indication of your overall wellbeing with gum disease increasing the risk of heart attack.
