welcome to dubai
Welcome to our city
Dubai is one of seven emirates that forms the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Often recognised for its iconic towers, man-made islands and malls, Dubai is undoubtedly a success story as is this young country itself. About the UAE
Just 46 years old, this Islamic and Arab country has achieved tremendous success, a combination of the founding fathers’ achievements and steady guidance from its leaders. Six emirates (Abu Dhabi {the capital}, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah) got together on 2nd December 1971 to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, joined on 10th February 1972. Prior to being known as the UAE, the seven sheikhdoms were known as the Trucial States (as per the treaty relations established with the British in the 19th Century). In early 1968, the British decided to withdraw their involvement in the Trucial States and thus a federation was born.
Founding father of the UAE
A driving force behind the formation of the federation, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first President of the UAE.
www.discover-dubai.ae
Government
The UAE is run by a federal government and local governments of the seven emirates, with powers and roles being defined by the constitution. Traditional governance still exists, with the ‘majlis’ concept giving citizens free access to the rulers. The current President of the UAE is His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while the VicePresident and Prime Minister is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Religion
The official religion of the UAE is Islam, and you will find many mosques throughout the city. Non-Muslims are not permitted entry into most mosques.
Population
The estimated population of Dubai is approximately 2.9 million people. Around 88% of those are expatriates who are attracted by the tax-free working conditions and the relatively crime-free lifestyle.

welcome to dubai
Emirati dress Emirati men wear a
kandura, a long white
robe, that has no collar. It has a long loose tassel, known as a tarboosh, with matching embroidery on the sleeves. Temperature It is advisable to carry a shawl or jumper as most malls have their air conditioners set at very low temperatures in summer.
Water Residents consume bottled water, and it is easily available in supermarkets. Note: only a handful of restaurants provide complimentary drinking water.
Ladies first Most public services have a women's-only queue or section, so you may use them where applicable. www.discover-dubai.ae
The white headscarf, known as a gutra, is fixed in place with a black rope, known as an agal. For weddings and religious holidays such as Eid, a black garment, bisht, with golden embroidery on the sides is worn on top of the kandura.
Most women from the Gulf wear a loose-fitting black cloak, known as an abaya, on top of their outfit. It protects from the high temperatures and is decorated with embroidery patterns or crystals. The black scarf, shayla, which covers the hair is traditionally made from black sheer material. Dress code Tourists and residents are expected to dress modestly in public places. A good rule of thumb is to have your knees and shoulders covered. DISCOVER DUBAI JULY | 7

Why do you
pray 5 times a day?
By: Salamah Ghudayer Five times a day can seem like a lot, but I will ask this in response; how many times a day do you take a little break, a redirection, a moment of distance from the grind or wish you had one? As for Muslims, the required prayer in Islam is called ‘Salat’ which stems from the word connection -Wasl and the connection of communications - Etisalat. Prayer is the second most important pillar in Islam. It divides up our days and nights to continually refocus us, like a pilgrim on a path, each prayer is like pulling out our map to check our direction to the destination of our choosing, within this world or towards the next. As it is required, the daily prayers remind us of priorities. Throughout the Quran it is repeated that humanity was 8 | JULY DISCOVER DUBAI
made to worship its creator and the work, relationships, activities, with their struggles and success are still very important, but not the priority. So, we must pull the car over in the rush hour or put the shopping aside for example, if it is prayer time. To stop and admit what is most important; that we are alive is living in the now, and the problems of last week or five years ago likely have changed. Getting from point A to point B can actually wait. As for the number 5, if you think that is a lot, just wait. Originally God wanted Muslims to pray 50 times a day. During a holy night called Israa ma Mirage - the Night of Ascension, which it’s commemoration is a holiday here in the Emirates, Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) ascended to heaven after going to Jerusalem and was told by God Muslims #discover_dxb
welcome to dubai should pray 50 times a day. Prophet Moses (Musa) told Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) it is too difficult for people, return to God and ask for less. So, he returned and, in the end, negotiated shyly down to 5 required daily prayers. The times for the five prayers is known by the location of the sun. Muslims use the sun as a time piece, before watches, clocks and apps. At five different locations of the sun, the Adthan or call-to-prayer is heard from the mosques. The first time is actually when the sun slips past the horizon at sunsetthis is called Maghrib. When the last hint of sunlight has left the night sky past twilight - this is called Isha. When the top of the sun hits the horizon at daybreak, this is the pre-dawn prayer - called Fejr. When the sun is almost directly overhead - this is called Dhuhr. The last afternoon prayer, when the shadow equals an objects height - this is called Aser. You will also hear people making plans to meet; such as ‘ba’ad aldhuhr’ - after noon prayer is the meaning or ‘ba’ad almaghrib’ - after the sunset. The times of these prayers changes plus or minus a minute as we move through the seasons. You may see differences in the frequency of one Muslim praying compared to another; such as colleagues at work or friends. Some Muslims are forgetful and neglectful like you will find within any www.discover-dubai.ae
religion, while some Muslims do pray more. Any additional prayer done similarly to the required prayers; with the movements and bending, is called Al - Tatawu. Some of these are simply extra prayers and some are absolutely voluntary but which Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) prayed regularly. Any other additional communication with God aside from these prayers is called Dua’a or supplication and have no particular movements or words, it is just speaking from the heart in any condition to the person’s creator. Prayer in any religion, is about faith and a communication out to a power higher than yourself. It does not matter what you call it or what belief headlines those actions, one of the beautiful things about mankind is knowing we are equal and are humbled by how small we are compared to the intricacy of the universe. For some, prayer reminds us of this once a week, in moments of crisis, in dropping to our knees in thankfulness or for all of the above five times a day. With thanks to Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Call 04-3536666 or visit www.cultures.ae

Dubai's souks
Souks are traditional marketplaces or bazaars that retail a wide range of commodities. Here are three popular souks in Deira, historically the commercial centre of Dubai, worth ticking off the list when you are in Dubai. Gold Souk Even if you are not looking for anything specific, the Gold Souk is worth a visit to see the glittering array of merchandise on offer (especially in the evening). Approximately 10 tons of gold is present at any given time in the souk. There are over 1,000 jewellery shops in Dubai, and it is one of the cheapest cities in the world to buy gold jewellery. If you are looking to buy, don’t feel pressured into deciding at the first shop. There's plenty of choice and everyone's prepared to bargain. Spice Souk Once on the Deira side of the creek, all you need to do is follow your nose and take in the breath-taking aromas of a selection of spices such as ginger, chillies, cardamom and frankincense, all displayed in huge jute sacks ready to burst at the seams. Wandering around the stalls is a pleasant way to pass an evening, and the fragrances can really help to work up an appetite. This is a good place to buy incense burners, saffron, rose water, henna kits and shisha pipes. Perfume Souk One of the things Middle Eastern Arabs are known for is their strong, spicy fragrances and hard-hitting perfumes. The Perfume Souk is the ideal place to explore these alluring scents and a great opportunity to find your perfect one. Besides traditional perfumes (oudbased ones), shops in this market also sell branded fragrances from around the world, so it is well worth a fragrant tour of the many shops. 12 | JULY DISCOVER DUBAI

What to see Spice Souk Deira Old Souk Abra Station The Deira side of the creek will take you to the old fashioned commercial hub of Dubai. Colourful and aromatic are two terms that can be aptly used for this one. Once in Deira, follow your nose and take in the breath-taking aromas of all those colourful spices such as cardamom, whole spices, cinnamon, saffron, chillies, cloves, nutmeg and dried fruits, all displayed in jute sacks ready to burst at the seams. What to see Lover’s Lock Bridge The Yard, Khawaneej The act of securing your love with a padlock has been a tradition for years. The history of love padlocks dates back at least 100 years to a melancholic Serbian tale of World War I. A schoolmistress named Nada, who was from Vrnjacka Banja, fell in love with a Serbian officer named Relja. Following their commitment, Relja went to war in Greece where he eventually fell in love with a lady from Corfu. As a result, Relja and Nada broke off their engagement and she died of a broken heart. Young ladies from Vrnjacka Banja needed to secure their own relationships to avoid being left unwed and they began www.discover-dubai.ae
recording their names, with the names of their lovers, on latches and fastening them to the railings of the scaffold where Nada and Relja used to meet. This is considered the first example of a Lover’s Lock Bridge. Nowadays, people use the names of friends and family as well as their lovers as a way to profess an unbreakable bond. Inspired originally by Pont des Arts in Paris, the bridge is built over a picturesque lake. Couples can hang padlocks engraved with their initials on the bridge as a promise of eternal love for each other. The Yard, Al Khawaneej, is the host of the region’s only Lover’s Lock Bridge. The Yard itself has plenty to look at and is designed to model a farm, with an 18-metre tall windmill, a water mill and a wishing well - this spot is a rustic paradise. DISCOVER DUBAI JULY | 39

new trampoline classes
Fitness First is ensuring it keeps members in tip-top shape, as it becomes one of the first health club chains in the UAE to launch trampoline classes. The brand new JUMP class consists of a number of fun and low-impact exercises such as squats, lunges and high knees, as well as specific moves that can only be done on a trampoline. Trampoline classes have become increasingly popular in recent years due to the fact that it is a low-impact form of exercise. Set to the backdrop of an upbeat playlist, JUMP provides a fun but intense cardio workout without putting 40 | JULY DISCOVER DUBAI
excess stress on the heart, muscles and joints. The 45-minute class is suitable for all levels of fitness and participants can achieve incredible results through the fat burning classes whilst also improving balance and co-ordination. For an extra boost, members can use their MYZONE heart rate monitor to take their workout to the next level. The MYZONE feedback, which is displayed on a screen during the class, encourages class participants to push even harder. Alan Holl, Group Head of Fitness at Fitness First, says: “At Fitness First, we are committed to providing our members with not only the latest fitness equipment, #discover_dxb
beauty & wellbeing but also access to innovative and resultsfocused classes and exercise programmes. JUMP is an exclusive signature class by Fitness First, with bespoke programming designed by our National Group exercise team. The class is a fantastic addition to our offering and one that is already showing signs of success with the majority of classes being fully booked every day. We’re committed to providing our members with the latest innovations, with many more coming soon.” Low-impact cardiovascular fitness When jumping on a trampoline, the flexible surface moves as you land, reducing the impact upon landing, unlike other forms of cardiovascular exercise such as jogging. The jumping motion still enables participants to increase their heart rate, therefore increasing cardiovascular fitness. Improved lymphatic function One of the greatest benefits of trampolining is the benefit it offers to the lymphatic system. The up-and-down www.discover-dubai.ae
bouncing of trampolining stimulates the lymph system, increasing lymph flow substantially, this keeps waste products moving, clearing the body of toxins and improving overall immune function. Improved balance and coordination Trampolines are good for improving balance and co-ordination. When you jump on a trampoline, your body must find its center of gravity and “rebalance” before landing again. With practice, you become better at maintaining your equilibrium despite unexpected movement patterns. *JUMP is currently available at Fitness First’s IBN Battuta and Oasis Centre clubs in Dubai, with further classes due to be rolled out across the Middle East in the near future. Fitness First consistently aims to bring brand new, innovative and resultsorientated classes to its members. Each of its health clubs offers a range of exclusive signature classes, designed by its internationally trained team, such as T.U.F.F, 6D and CORB. DISCOVER DUBAI JULY | 41

Other markets
Ditch the malls for an alternate shopping experience in Dubai. Dubai has many markets, and you can be assured what you take home from these places are generally much cheaper than what you'd find in most shopping malls. Meena Bazaar Located in the heart of Bur Dubai, be warned: Meena Bazaar isn't the easiest of locations to get to, but it is your go-to place for a traditional shopping experience. You know you've arrived when you hear blaring horns, see shops with decorative lights and haggling customers. Most shops specialise in textiles but one can find imitation jewellery, Indian outfits and watch repair shops too. Note: first-timers are likely to get swindled. Naif Souk Once a camel market, this is one of Dubai's oldest souks. Today, tourists can buy anything ranging from leather goods to souvenirs, but it is best known as the place for getting abayas (black cloaks worn by Arab women) at reasonable prices. The next most popular item in this market is electronics. Tip: Make sure you bargain with shopkeepers. The best time to visit Naif souk is after sunset when the area comes alive. Satwa It isn't half as stylish as most districts in Dubai, but Satwa is a fascinating area. Here you will find interesting souvenirs ranging from toy camels to models of Burj Khalifa. The best part: You don't have to pay a fortune for them. If you're looking to add some clothes to your wardrobe without emptying your pockets, make your way to Ukay Ukay where you'll find second-hand t-shirts, dresses and baby clothes for under Dhs 20. 46 | JULY DISCOVER DUBAI

What to buy
Though Dubai has lovely souvenirs you can take back home, including sand art, magnets and mugs of Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab, here are some of the authentic gifts you really should be after. Sadu cushions Made with ancient Bedouin weaving techniques, known as Al Sadu, this fabric is distinguishable because of its colours - deep reds, black, white, gold and brown. It’s made with wool from camels and goats, and the weave is said to be tight enough that even water won’t go through it. Other than cushions, the fabric is used to make sofas and traditional tents. Dates The sweet fruit has been a food source for survival to Bedouins. Easy to digest, they are high in iron and contain potassium and vitamins too. Gourmet food brand Bateel sells a variety of dates including the sweet, raisin-like Khidri, Medjool, Sekki as well as Khola dates. If you'd like to try something different, opt for the ones that are filled with caramelised nuts, candied ginger and orange peel. Note: packaged dates can be eaten year-round. www.discover-dubai.ae
Bukhoor This refers to wood chips, commonly known as oud, soaked in fragrant oils and burned in a traditional incense burner, mabkhara. In Arab countries, the bukhoor is passed among guests at a gathering as a gesture of hospitality. Most women wave their clothing or hair above the smoke so that it picks up the scent. The long-lasting fragrance is also used around homes to eliminate stubborn odours from cooking or tobacco. DISCOVER DUBAI JULY | 47

Getting around Dubai
Public transport in Dubai is made up of taxis, buses, trams, the metro and marine transport (abras, water buses, water taxis and ferries). Here's everything you need to know about these modes of transportation that will help you move from place to place. Taxis: Taking a taxi in Dubai is cheap, safe and one of the fastest ways of getting around the city. You can find taxis outside malls, hotels, official taxi ranks, or wave them down in the street. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has also introduced an exclusive dispatch service - Hala taxi - with numerous on-board features such as free Wi-Fi, weather reports, news and entertainment systems.
Booking a taxi Dubai Taxi Corporation (red roof), ladies and families (pink roof), special needs or Hala Taxi (black roof) 04-2080808. Other taxi companies: Al Arabia Taxi (green roof) 04-2855111; Cars Taxi (blue roof) 04-2693344; Metro Taxi (orange roof) 04-2673222; National Taxi (yellow roof) 04-3390002.
Tips: Avoid getting into unmarked taxis. They are illegal, and you could become the victim of a scam. Tipping your taxi driver is not mandatory, but as in most places, it seems like the right thing to do. Special services: Pink roof taxis are dedicated to serving ladies and families. Specially equipped vehicles are also available for those with special needs (bookings to be made in advance).

Abu Dhabi
The largest of the seven emirates, Abu Dhabi is the capital. When translated from Arabic, the name Abu Dhabi means “The Father of the Gazelle”, and it is said that this probably refers to the gazelles that lived in the emirate. 1. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque One of the world’s largest mosques and an architectural masterpiece, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is visible from each of the bridges on your drive into Abu Dhabi, making for an impressive welcome to the capital! Open to non-Muslims, the mosque features 82 domes held up with over 1,000 columns, 24-carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand knotted carpet. The reflective pools that surround the mosque magnify its beauty, and at night it is transformed by a unique lighting system which reflects the phases of the moon. Visiting hours are from 9am to 10pm from Saturday to Thursday and from 4.30pm to 10pm on Fridays. Guided tours, approximately 45 minutes long, are available. Call 02-4191919. 2. Ferrari World The first Ferrari-branded theme park in the world, Ferrari World holds records for having the largest space frame structure ever built, housing the world’s fastest roller coaster (Formula Rossa) as well as a roller coaster with the world’s steepest cable lift and tallest inverted loop (Flying Aces). The park is open from 11am to 8pm, daily. Discounts are offered on tickets purchased early. Call 02-4968000. 3. Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital Falcons are an integral part of traditional Gulf culture, and their owners will spare no expense in restoring these magnificent birds to full health. Al Ain
Commonly referred to as the ‘Garden City’ due to its greenery, Al Ain is popular in the summer because of its low humidity. Located in the eastern region of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain is the birthplace of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. 1. Al Ain Oasis Opened as the UAE’s first curated UNESCO World Heritage site visitor experience, the oasis is spread over 1,200 hectares and contains more than 147,000 date palms of up to 100 different varieties. Visitors get an understanding of Al Ain’s oasis ecosystem, shaped by a complex shared water supply based on both wells and the UAE’s traditional irrigation system, ‘aflaj’. The site also features food and beverage outlets. Open from 8am to 5pm. Call 02-5995438. 2. Al Ain Camel Market Located east of Jebel Hafeet, this is the last souk of its kind in the UAE and is an excellent opportunity to see camels up close and how well they’re cared for. There are some excellent photo opportunities, but ask permission before taking pictures. Opening hours are from 6am to 7pm. There is an entry fee for organised group tours. 3. Jebel Hafeet At 1,240m, Jebel Hafeet is the UAE’s second highest peak. Over 500 ancient burial tombs dating back 5,000 years have been found in the foothills. A winding highway, listed among the world’s greatest driving roads, takes visitors to the top, which boasts magnificent views over Al Ain. At the base of the mountain lies the Green Mubazzarah Park. In addition to the hot springs (where you can dip your feet in 40-degree Celsius waters), the location also features flowing streams, a man-made lake and chalets. Close to the peak of the mountain, the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet Al Ain offers accommodation with a view. Its four restaurants, serving varied cuisines, make for a perfect stop when hunger strikes. 54 | JULY DISCOVER DUBAI

Sharjah
The third largest emirate, Sharjah is the cultural capital of the UAE. It is also known for its numerous beautiful mosques, its gold souk and the Sharjah National Park. Due to its large Muslim population, alcohol isn’t served in hotels in the emirate. 1. Heart of Sharjah The largest historical preservation and restoration project in the region, Heart of Sharjah is a heritage district that houses galleries and museums. The Sharjah Calligraphy Museum sits in the Heart of Sharjah. Opened in 2002, this museum showcases Arabic calligraphy on different mediums, including paper, wood, canvas and ceramic. Artworks are by local and international calligraphers. The museum is open from 4pm to 8pm on Fridays and from 8am to 8pm during the rest of the week. Ajman
Quiet and relaxed compared to the other emirates, much of the activity in Ajman happens along the corniche and its 16km stretch of beach, overlooking the Arabian Gulf. Ajman controls two inland enclaves, Masfut and Manama. 1. Ajman Museum For a taste of culture, head to Ajman Museum. The 18th-century fort, one of the main historical attractions in the UAE, served as the ruler’s residence until 1970. A decade later, it was converted into a museum which displays an assortment of archaeological artefacts, weapons and tools that portray the way of life in the past. The museum is open daily except Fridays from 8am to 8pm. Entry is Dhs 5 for individual tickets and Dhs 15 for family tickets. Call 06-7423824. 2. Ajman Dhow Yard Dhows (traditional Arab sailing vessels) are built by hand at this yard. Visitors can watch master craftsmen at work, using tools and techniques that have been handed down from generation to generation. The experts also make fibreglass dhows, powered by diesel engines, for racing events across the country. The yard is located on the north side of Ajman Creek. 3. Al Zorah Nature Reserve A haven for birds and marine life, Al Zorah Nature Reserve (a part of the Al Zorah community - a new development set along 12km of waterfront and 1.6km of sandy beaches) is best described as a vibrant ecosystem made up of mangroves, turquoise lagoons and sandy beaches. Home to nearly 60 species of birds, including pink flamingo, egret and heron, the mangroves are best explored by kayak, with calm waters making it an easy adventure for novice paddlers. 56 | JULY DISCOVER DUBAI

Umm al-Quwain
Least populated of all the emirates, Umm al-Quwain (simply referred to as UAQ) is in the north of the UAE. When translated from Arabic, the name Umm al-Quwain means ‘Mother of Two Powers’. 1. Al Sinniyah Island One kilometre away from UAQ, this bird sanctuary is popular for day trips. It is home to the UAE's largest Socotra cormorant colony, with over 15,000 pairs making it the third largest colony in the world. During the period between November to March, they are regularly spotted flying a few feet above the sea. Marine life is here remarkable; blacktip reef sharks patrol the outer shoreline, while green turtles are abundant in the inner leads. Between Al-Sinniyah and the mainland is an expansive area of sand and mud flats called Khor al-Beida. 2. Dreamland Aqua Park Celebrating its 20th birthday this year, Dreamland offers visitors low to high thrill attractions. Some of the most popular rides include the Twister, Slide Five and the Twisting Dragon. There's a Dead Sea pool too and waterside camping facilities. Open from 10am to 6pm on weekdays and until 8pm on Fridays. Children pay Dhs 100 and adults pay Dhs 160. Call 06-7681888. 3. Umm Al Quwain airfield An Ilyushin IL-76, built in the Soviet era, sits in the deserted airfield in Umm Al Quwain. Now popular as a backdrop for photographs, the plane arrived in the spot in 1999 with stories of its sudden appearance including an emergency landing as it ran out of fuel to being used as a gate-guard for the airfield. The airline is said to be linked to notorious Tajik arms dealer Viktor Bout. www.discover-dubai.ae

It houses an excellent collection of archaeological and ethnological artefacts, including a collection of documents, manuscripts and treaties between the rulers of RAK and Great Britain. Call 07-2333411. 2. Fujairah Museum Opened in 1991, Fujairah Museum houses archaeological exhibits discovered during numerous excavations all over the emirate in recent years. These include items related to agriculture, fishing, trade, weaving, pottery as well as ancient weapons, costumes and utensils, including pots made of steatite and chlorite and a set of mugs and cups of various shapes and uses. The museum is open from 8am to 6.30pm on all days of the week except Fridays. Entry fee to the museum is Dhs 5. Call 09-2229085. 2. Snoopy Island
Named after the cartoon dog it resembles, this is a popular spot for snorkelling and diving. The reef that surrounds the island is teeming with marine life including jelly fish, but that should not detract from the experience. Access is available from Sandy Beach Resort at Dhs 100 a day. Snorkelers can hire equipment from the beach hotels. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot turtles too. Call 09-2445555. 3. The wadis and mountains ‘Wadi’ is an Arabic term for valley, and Fujairah is extremely popular for its wadis, especially Wadi Ham - the largest and longest one in the UAE.
