Welcome to Dubai In 1833, His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Butti moved the Bani Yas tribal family into Dubai. Sheikh Maktoum subsequently became the founder of the Al Maktoum family who continue to rule the Emirate to this day. The current ruler of Dubai is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the VicePresident and Prime Minister of the UAE. Sheikh Mohammed is committed to fulfilling his father’s dream of making Dubai one of the leading cities in the world, and has successfully turned Dubai into a global hub of tourism and trade between the East and West.
Religion
The official religion of the UAE is Islam, and you will find a large number of mosques throughout the city. Non-Muslims are only permitted entry into mosques if they are on a guided tour.
Population
The estimated population of Dubai is approximately 2.7 million people. Around 80% of those are expatriates, who are attracted by the tax-free working conditions and the relaxed, relatively crime-free lifestyle.
Local time
The UAE is four hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The UAE does not use daylight saving.
Currency
The local currency is the Emirati dirham which is pegged to the US dollar. The dirham is commonly referred to as either AED or DHS when shown in written form on price tags and menus. There are 100 fils to one dirham. Coins come in 25 fils, 50 fils and 1 dirham. Notes are issued in denominations of: Dhs 5, Dhs 10, Dhs 20, Dhs 50, Dhs 100, Dhs 200, Dhs 500 and Dhs 1,000. Always try to have a selection of smaller notes available for cheaper items, as it can be difficult getting change for a Dhs 500 or Dhs 1,000 note.
Money exchange & banking
Language
Exchanging cash or travellers' cheques is relatively easy, with exchange centres located in most shopping malls and throughout the city. Banks are open from Saturday to Thursday (closed on Friday).
Weekend
The following dirham exchange rates are correct at the time of going to press: • One USD = Dhs 3.67 • One GBP = Dhs 4.76 • One Euro = Dhs 4.08
The official language is Arabic, although English is the most commonly used language in all areas that incorporate tourism and commerce. Hindi, Farsi and Urdu are also widely used. The UAE weekend falls on Friday and Saturday. www.discover-dubai.ae

The dos and don’ts in Dubai Welcome to Dubai. Whether you’re here with family, friends or your partner, we promise you there’s enough to guarantee each of you a good time. However, before you begin your holiday, there are a few things you need to be aware of. Here’s a list to help you:
1. Ramadan
It’s is the holy month of Ramadan, and many residents will be fasting therefore eating, drinking, smoking or chewing gum in public places is not permitted until after sunset. There are a few restaurants that will allow visitors to dine during daylight hours, but this will happen behind screened-off areas.
2. Photography
be purchased, with a permit, at licensed alcohol shops. There is zero tolerance to driving under the influence of alcohol or any narcotics.
6. Ladies first
Most public and government services have a women’s-only queue or counter, so you may use that where applicable.
7. Taxis
In taxis, it is recommended women sit at the back, unless they use pink taxis (driven by women and designated for women and children).
8. The weather
Holidays mean lots of photographs and videos but make sure you do not take pictures of strangers without their permission. The UAE has strict photography laws, and photography and videography is permissible only if it does not infringe on the privacy of others.
Using a sunscreen when outdoors is recommended as is using a moisturiser when indoors due to the air conditioning systems in most places. It is advisable to always carry a shawl or jumper as most malls have their air conditioners set at very low temperatures, making it uncomfortably cold for many people.
3. Dress code
9. Water
Tourists and residents are expected to dress modestly. Shopping malls and most public places have sign boards for the same. A good rule of thumb is to have your shoulders and knees covered.
4. Public display of affection
Dubai is an Islamic city, and public displays of affection are offensive and will land you in serious trouble. Therefore, refrain from hugging or kissing in public places.
5. Alcohol consumption
Visitors may consume alcohol at licensed restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Drinking in public or drunk behaviour is not acceptable, and could see you behind bars. Alcohol can 6 | JUNE DISCOVER DUBAI
Residents consume bottled water, and it is easily available. Supermarkets and convenience stores stock local (Mai Dubai, Masafi and Al Ain) and international (Aquafina, Evian and Aqua Panna) brands. While most visitors look for bottled water with low sodium content, you do need the sodium to replace what you lose in sweat. Note: Only a handful of restaurants provide complimentary drinking water.
10. SIM cards
Dubai has two telecommunication service providers - Etisalat and Du - and both provide Visitor Line packs for tourists that give you access to local and international calls, text messages and data. Prices start from Dhs 35. #discover_dxb

General information
Local Culture We are in the midst of Ramadan. It is a challenging month of worship and dedication, as it is meant to be, but we are about to head into the last stretch with its own unique enthusiasm for extra deeds and fun preparation for the Eid holiday. Ramadan is divided into thirds; the first two being Mercy and Forgiveness as the focus, while the last third is on Salvation. Beyond the fast, the month is about returning to good habits, increasing good deeds, adhering to the mannerisms of faith. Many extra forms of worship, beyond those required, are often overlooked in the hectic modern life, but we are returned to them during Ramadan. During the last ten nights of Ramadan good deeds are rewarded tenfold. So, your Muslim neighbours will be doing a variety of additional, recommended acts of worship. They may be taking extra prayers called Qiyam a Layl (the standing of night) after midnight. Some men in every Muslim community will be participating in Itiqaf (seclusion) in the mosque for continuous worship and remembrance of God. Acts of charity are often increased in all forms; giving food, cash (though never to those begging as it is forbidden in Islam and by law), clothing, paying the bills of the poor without their knowledge, offer a helping hand and even a smile; all are considered charity in the Muslim faith. What can make a Muslim strive further after twenty days of fasting rather than slacken? The Quran tells us that during 8 | JUNE DISCOVER DUBAI
the last ten nights there is an odd-dated night called Layla Al Qadr - The Night of Power. This is the anniversary of the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Mohammed. The rewards of worship in this night are better than those of a thousand months. For Muslim and not, while in the Emirates, it is an especially important time to think of those who have less. We are surrounded by many assisting us in our day to day lives. Many residents have guards, car washers, groundskeepers, watchmen, cleaners, office or kitchen assistants who would appreciate a gift or phone card, as many of them are Muslim and away from home during the holy month and holiday. #discover_dxb
Aside from worship and charity however, Muslims are also busy preparing for Eid; the three day holiday celebrating the completion of the holy month. It is a holiday to rejoice that the challenge of fasting is over with and all are to come out of their homes, feast and celebrate. Muslims should wear their best clothes on Eid, but due to the prosperity of the Emirates most purchase new clothes or have them tailor-made for all three days, whereas in other nations new clothes are worn just by children or for the first day only. Emirati families will also be preparing to host guests for the three days, so special trays of sweets are ordered, houses www.discover-dubai.ae
are being deep cleaned and some even arrange new furnishings from special accessories to redecoration. Grocery stores, furniture shops and some clothing stores follow the spirit of the month and offer sales for the commonly needed items for Eid. Adults are also arranging the all-important Eidya, which is cash handed to visiting children during the Eid holiday. They usually strive for brand new bills or coins from banks to distribute in keeping with the new, clean spirit of the end of Ramadan. With thanks to Salamah Ghudayer, Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. www.cultures.ae DISCOVER DUBAI JUNE | 9
General information
Our handy guide to the When walking through the mall or in a coffee shop, you may have noticed the different types of thobes or abayas worn by individuals from the region. Have you ever wondered if you can tell where they are from by looking at the garment? These little tips will help you do just that. The BALANCE is created by holding the ghotra at symmetrical lengths over the shoulders and then throwing the ends over the top of the head to create the shape of a scale when you look at it from the front. Kuwait Kuwaiti kanduras are known for their use of high quality fabric. They are a slim fit and have a one button collar. Omanis wear a MUSSAR, which is a hat, rather than the ghotra found in the rest of the MENA region. They are often seen in colourful patterns or with monograms. Omani Omani kanduras are collarless with short loose tassels attached just above the chest. The BUTTERFLY is an easy, elegant and flexible look. It allows for freer movement of the head and neck, unlike some of the starched and more complex designs. Bahrain Bahraini kanduras have a soft shirt collar and are loose fitting. They occasionally have shirt pockets. 10 | JUNE DISCOVER DUBAI
The TEACHER is an easy to achieve over the shoulders look. Emirati The Emirati kanduras have no collar. They have a long loose tassel with matching embroidery on the sleeves.
The COBRA is heavily starched and stiff which gives it an imposing look. It was actually inspired by the venomous snake. Qatar The material of the Qatari kandura is often shiny and occasionally has a shirt pocket or a long, stiff tassel. The BINT AL BAKKAR is tough to master but looks great. In this image it is complimented with a red and white checked ghotra. Saudi Saudi kanduras are tight fit with a twobutton collar. The shirt sleeves are made to have cufflinks. #discover_dxb
MENA National dress Turkey The JILBAB is a longbuttoned overcoat, usually a slim fit which provides covering as well as style. The colourful silk scarves, which are tied beneath the chin, are normally worn with the jilbab.
Jordan The Jordanian kaftan has detailed patterns on the neck, sleeves and hem of the dress only and not down the centre. The ASBA, headscarf, is wrapped around the head and tied at the back, then folded over the front to create a decorative drape effect.
Palestine This traditional cross-stitched and heavily embroidered dress is worn to mark special occasions in Palestine. The EMBROIDERY, which is on the chest, sleeves, sides and back, is structured in a very specific way and varies depending on the town or area where the dress was made.
Afghanistan The full body covering is worn almost exclusively In Afghanistan, with blue being the most common colour. The CHADRI, the face veil, covers the entire head except for the eyes, which are covered by a net.
Morocco This robe with its pointed hood can be made to be ornate and formal, or it can be kept comfortable and casual. The JALABIYA, the fulllength hooded garment, also has a belt at the back which gives the option of adding more shapes. www.discover-dubai.ae
Khaleeji Most nationals from the Gulf wear loose-fitting black abayas, sometimes with stunning details and decoration. The SHAYLA is traditionally made from sheer lightweight material. It affords modesty, and even though it is black in colour, it is very practical in the high temperatures of the desert and protects from dust.

The best way to see the impressive buildings that have sprung up along Dubai Creek is from the waterway, and bustling Abra stations will provide you with a quick and efficient way to cross the water.
Water taxis and abras
Dubai Creek is full of water taxis and abras ferrying people around and can be boarded at numerous locations along the banks. Abras are small barges that are powered by diesel engines and can seat around 20 people. Incidentally, Dubai's work force commute across the creek on a regular basis and there are over 17,500 abra crossings per day, so if you’re wearing expensive or light coloured clothing it's advisable to remain standing for the trip, as the bench seats can get a little grubby. Abras can also be hired for private trips along the creek and if you negotiate well with the boat captains, you should get a good deal.
L) Spice Souk
Once you land on the Deira side of the Creek, all you need to do is follow your nose and take in the breath-taking selection of spices such as ginger, chillies, cardamom and frankincense, all displayed in huge jute sacks ready to burst at the seams. Wandering around the stalls is a pleasant way to pass an evening and the fragrances can really help to work up an appetite. This is a working souq which sells goods to locals and sailors 22 | JUNE DISCOVER DUBAI
from the dhows, and is a good place to buy incense burners, saffron, rose water, henna kits and shisha pipes.
M) Perfume Souk
One of the things Middle Eastern Arabs are known for is their strong, spicy fragrances and perfumes. The Perfume Souk is the ideal place to explore these alluring scents and a great opportunity to find your perfect one. Besides traditional perfumes, they also sell branded fragrances from around the world, so it is well worth a fragrant tour of the many shops.
N) Gold Souk
Even if you are not looking for anything specific, the Gold Souk is worth a visit to see the glittering array of merchandise on offer (especially in the evening). There are over 1,000 jewellery shops in Dubai, and with no taxes, low import duties and high turnovers allowing for lower margins, it is one of the cheapest cities in the world to buy gold jewellery. If you are looking to buy, don’t feel pressured into making a decision at the first shop. There's plenty of choice and everyone's prepared to bargain. #discover_dxb
Other areas of interest Burj Nahar
Further into Deira on Omar bin Al Khattab road, you will find Burj Nahar, one of three inland-facing watchtowers that were used to guard Dubai from attack by hostile desert tribes. Built in 1870 and set amongst beautiful gardens, Burj Nahar is a fine example of an old watchtower and is a wonderful photo opportunity.

Health & Fitness
Make yoga a staple in your fitness routine
Designed to strengthen the whole body and develop personal willpower, yoga improves lean muscle mass, flexibility and stamina. “Yoga is great throughout the whole year, however, since we have extreme weather, especially the summers, it is advisable to continue yoga with variations and modifications to calm and cool both the mind and body. Yoga helps balance the central nervous system. The body temperature during summer by default gets warm making the body pliable and easy to get into a pose without effort,” says Marcellene Azavedo, Fitness First freelance yoga instructor. Fitness First shows there are many hidden benefits of yoga that most are not aware of: 1. Defines the optimal body For most, lifting heavy weights might seem the only way to gain muscle mass, but it’s always the combination between strength and flexibility that leads to an optimal physique. Most professional athletes incorporate yoga into their workout routine to keep their muscles lean and flexible while growing. 2. Prevents injury Yoga improves the overall body flexibility which increases performance and prevents injury in other sports too. Unlike other forms of exercising, yoga works all muscle groups, including neck, shoulders, back and legs and helps reduce pain and improve functionality. 3. Stimulates brain function Although most forms of exercise improve brain function, yoga has some real benefits for the mind. By conscious breathing, controlled movements and mental imagery, you feel less stressed and gain better focus. Meditation and self-awareness also help reduce blood pressure and muscle tension. 4. Releases stress Yoga is a stress-relieving practice on many levels. Through meditation and advance www.discover-dubai.ae
breathing techniques it reduces the level of the stress hormone called “cortisol” and helps the nervous system regain its natural balance. 5. Increases immunity Yoga can boost immunity by helping us fight infections, reducing stress and strengthening the internal defence mechanism. It is a great tool to maintain the health of the respiratory system and the optimal function of various organs through the increase of oxygen level in the blood. 6. Improves digestion There are plenty of yoga postures, especially twists and stretches, that target the abdominal organs and keep food moving along. Yoga can relieve a wide range of digestive discomfort like bloating or constipation and help you achieve a better digestion. 7. Working out on the go With the summer and the holy month of Ramadan here, yoga is a great way to stay fit on the go. It doesn’t require any special equipment or set up, all you need is just a little bit of extra will to keep your goals in check wherever you go. Still not convinced? Try it for yourself Fitness First offers free trial guest passes for their yoga classes, ranging from swing yoga, flow, Hatha, power and more, in most of their locations. uae.fitnessfirstme.com

What is Ramadan?
The word Ramadan comes from the Arabic root ‘ramida’ meaning dryness or scorching heat and is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The Islamic calendar uses the phases of the moon to mark its days, and the sighting of the new moon marks the start and end of Ramadan. In the 365-day Gregorian calendar, Ramadan falls approximately 11 days earlier each year. Muslims believe that during Ramadan, Allah revealed the first verses of the Quran to the Prophet Mohammed - Peace Be Upon Him (PBUH) - and honour the holy month with prayer, fasting and charity. To fast means not to eat or drink (including water) during daylight hours. While nonMuslims are not required to fast, they are legally obliged not to eat, drink or smoke in public places. If you break the rules, you will probably receive a verbal warning, but be careful, short jail sentences have been handed out in the past. Of course, you may eat, drink and smoke behind closed doors, and many restaurants and hotels continue to serve food behind screened-off areas. Activities peak in the evening as observers break their fast with their families, and Dubai’s plethora of eateries come to life with dedicated menus and even purpose-built marquees with special food and traditional entertainment. Even for those not fasting, this is a wonderful time to learn more about Emirati culture and traditions from 27th May until the end of Ramadan. With a youthful population, large number of tourists, free drinks for the ladies and some of the best DJs in the world performing on a regular basis, you can usually find a great night out. Visiting hours during the holy month of Ramadan change and the mosque will be shut on Fridays during this period. www.szgmc.ae

Jebel Hafeet
At 1,240m, it is Abu Dhabi’s highest peak and the UAE’s second highest. Over 500 ancient burial tombs dating back 5,000 years have been found in the Jebel Hafeet foothills. A winding highway, listed among the world’s greatest driving roads, takes visitors to the top, which boasts magnificent views over Al Ain. At the base of the mountain is the Green Mubazzarah Park and Hot Springs. In addition to the hot springs (where you can dip your feet in 40-degree Celsius waters), the location also features flowing streams, a man-made lake, lawns, pools, chalets and a play area for children. Close to peak of the mountain, the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet Al Ain offers accommodation with a view. Its four restaurants, serving varied cuisines, make for a perfect stop to enjoy a meal.
