GENERAL information

Welcome to

Dubai PRESENT DAY DUBAI The current ruler of Dubai is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the VicePresident and Prime Minister of the UAE. Sheikh Mohammed is commitment to fulfilling his father’s dream of making Dubai one of the leading cities in the world, and his vision has turned Dubai into a dynamic hub of tourism, trade and logistics between the east and west. Sheikh Mohammed is a very popular ruler and probably the best known member of the Maktoum family due to his charismatic personality and love for sport (horse racing in particular). 12 | MAY Discover Dubai

In 1833, H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Butti moved the Bani Yas tribal family into Dubai. Sheikh Maktoum subsequently became the founder of the Al Maktoum family who still rule the Emirate today.

RELIGION

The official religion of the UAE is Islam and you will find a large number of mosques throughout the city. Unless you are on a guided tour, non-muslims are not permitted entry into mosques.

POPULATION

The estimated population of Dubai is approximately 2.1 million people. Around 80% of those are expatriates, who are attracted by the taxfree working conditions and the relaxed, relatively crime-free lifestyle.

LOCAL TIME

The UAE is 4 hours ahead of GMT during winter months and 3 hours ahead in the summer months during daylight saving.

LANGUAGE

The official language is Arabic, although English is the most commonly used language in all areas that incorporate tourism and commerce. Hindi, Farsi and Urdu are also widely used.

WEEKEND

Friday and Saturday.

DUBAI CLIMATE

Dubai has a tropical desert climate, with summer temperatures reaching the mid to high 40’s and remaining in the 30’s overnight. Winter months are milder and more comfortable, with average temperatures in the mid 20’s, dropping to 12ºC-14ºC at night. Between December and March the winter weather can also bring short, irregular rainfall - so be prepared!

Credit: Dubai Meteorological Office

CURRENCY

The local currency is the Emirati Dirham which is pegged to the US Dollar. The Dirham is commonly referred to as either AED or DHS when shown in written form on price tags and menus etc. There are 100 fils to one Dirham and coins come in 5 fils, 10 fils, 25 fils, 50 fils and 1 Dirham. Notes are issued in denominations of: Dhs 5, Dhs 10, Dhs 20, Dhs 50, Dhs 100, Dhs 200, Dhs 500 and Dhs 1,000. Always try to have a selection of smaller notes available for cheaper items, as it can be difficult getting change for a Dhs 500 or Dhs 1,000 note.

The following Dirham exchange rates are correct at the time of going to press: • One US$ = Dhs 3.67 • One UK£ = Dhs 5.60 • One Euro = Dhs 4.80

MONEY EXCHANGE & BANKING

Exchanging cash or travellers cheques is relatively easy, with Exchange Centres located in most of the shopping malls and throughout the city. Banks are also open Saturday to Thursday (closed on Friday). www.mydubaiconnection.com

GENERAL information

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT LOCAL LIFE Despite becoming one of the most modern cities in the world, the local population of Dubai remain conscious of their heritage, legacy and culture. The late President of the UAE, H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, famously said, ‘A country that knows not its past has neither present nor future’ a phrase which adequately describes the Emirates of today. Many people come to Dubai holding misconceptions about the local culture, so in order to put everyones mind at ease, Discover Dubai asked Mr Nasif Kayed, General Manager of the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, to answer some of those frequently asked questions.

Q. Can you please explain the local dress.

A. The national dress for men is the spotlessly clean and crisp white ‘dishdasha’ or ‘kandoura’ and is worn with a headdress known as a ‘ghuttra’ (normally white for Emirati nationals). The ghuttra is secured around the head with a black cord or ‘agal’ which is still used to tether the camel’s feet together to stop them wandering off in the desert. Local Emirati women wear a traditional black weightless cloak called an ‘abaya’ together with a headscarf called a ‘sheyla’ sometimes decorated with traditional embroidery or sequins. Some women will also wear a leather mask called a ‘burgaa’ or use a very light veil ‘niqab’ to cover their face. Tradition, culture and religious modesty all influence the local dress for both men and women, and simplicity is the rule.

Q. Is it ok to hold hands, and even hug and kiss your wife/husband in public?

A. It's definitely ok to hold hands, but in public please conduct yourselves in a respectful manner. It’s expected to see an embrace at the airport, but these types of gestures are not typical in local society, therefore visitors and residents are asked to keep intimate exchanges ‘family friendly’ as public areas are considered rated “G”.

Q. Is it ok to show the bottom of your feet?

A. In the past, walking in the village was not as tidy as it is today, so when you entered a home, one removed their shoes. Even if you wore sandals your feet may have become soiled and unsightly. Today, mostly the elderly would expect you not to show the bottom of your feet as a sign of respect.

Q. Is it ok to take pictures of a local/Emirati?

A. It depends on the person, ask first and if they refuse don't be offended, some might be in hurry to get somewhere or may simply be shy and do not want their picture taken. 14 | MAY Discover Dubai

Q. What is the “dress code” in Dubai?

A. Most expect business casual as the official dress code, as well as the underlying values of modesty. Generally modesty in this country means no need to show-off. While we do see a bit of that, beachwear is for the beach, evening wear for the nightclubs and family friendly for the malls and public places. Just like company dress code rules, it’s best that a family friendly attire is worn when out, if your shoulders and knees are covered you’re sure not to offend anyone.

Q. Can I wear the local dress?

A. There is nothing that states you cannot dress like a local, but it’s best to remember that once in that attire you may be mistaken for one! So best to learn the protocol, mind your manners and understand you may be representing (or misrepresenting) someone’s culture. In the past almost everyone wore some type of robe because of its simplicity and modesty, from religious figures to everyday people. Light, airy clothes also keep you cool in the desert, which is why it’s still so popular in this region. The black abaya has evolved over the years and has crossed the cultural line to become a more universal garment worn all over the world and is an iconic part of fashion in the region.

Q. Can we enter a mosque?

A. Only if you are joining a guided tour through SMCCU (in Dubai) and currently Jumeirah Mosque and the Diwan Mosque in the historic district of Dubai are open weekly for tours.

Q. Why are alcohol and pork only served in limited areas in Dubai?

A. This comes from religion regarding do’s and don’ts. So no to alcohol, but here in Dubai it is legal in places like hotels, private residences (if you have a permit) but absolutely no tolerance for it in public or behind the wheel. As to pork, it’s a dietary restriction mentioned in the Quran along with other restrictions pertaining to food like the eating of animals with fangs, birds of prey with claws, animals with a split hoof, animals that did not die by slaughtering and animals already dead. Everything else in general is allowed. In Dubai, pork can be found in a small number of markets, and is usually keep separate from other foods. If you would like to experience a traditional breakfast, lunch, brunch or dinner, or take part in one of the many heritage tours or classes, please contact the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding below. GENERAL information

Shisha (hubbly-bubbly) As you travel around Dubai you will often see people smoking shisha, and if the sweet, fruity smell has got you intrigued, you will find this short guide enlightening.

What is it?

Shisha is a water pipe used to smoke tobacco through cooled water. The tobacco is heated by charcoal at the top and inhaled through a water chamber at the bottom. Shisha pipes date back over 500 years and their origins are still heavily debated.

What’s in it?

Shisha mu’assel is a syrupy mix of tobacco, binding agent (molasses, honey, treacle, sugar or vegetable glycerol) and fruit flavouring. Typical flavours include apple, mint, mango, strawberry, grape, melon and a variety of fruit based mixes. Contrary to popular belief, shisha is smoked for the flavour and enjoyment, and not for any kind of effect.

What’s it all about?

Smoking shisha is about socialising and has been part of life in the Middle East for centuries. Shisha cafés are full of friendly conversations, with both men and women equally taking part, and in places where alcohol is not allowed, you will find shisha being used to lubricate a social get together. Shisha is becoming increasingly popular in the West and you can find shisha pipes in homes and restaurants around the world.

What you need to know!

Smoking shisha is a leisurely, sociable activity that lasts about an hour (unlike a cigarette that usually takes a couple of minutes). According to the World Health Organisation, the volume of smoke inhaled in an hour-long session is the 16 | MAY Discover Dubai

equivalent of smoking around 100 cigarettes. Findings show a smoker will inhale half a litre of smoke per cigarette, while a shisha smoker can take between a sixth and a litre of smoke per inhale. Some of the nicotine is absorbed in the water, but this leads to people smoking more to experience the same effect, therefore inhaling more carbon monoxide, heavy metals, tar and carcinogens. Remember that shisha contains tobacco and is therefore linked to the same life-threatening illnesses as cigarettes.

USEFUL TIPS Although we don’t condone smoking, this is part of the local culture, and shisha may be one of the things you try during your stay. To help you fit in; here are some tips: • Only use specially prepared shisha tobacco • Occasionally blow into the pipe to get rid of the smoke building up in the water chamber • Replace the water if smoking for longer than an hour • Don't inhale too deeply • Shisha is no substitute for cigarettes, don’t switch to shisha if you’re trying to give up • Share your shisha, it will give you a break • If you do try it, limit it to occasional use; it's meant to be sociable!

ARABIC FAMILY NAMES

On your travels you will come across traditional Arabic names, so we’ve put together this quick guide to help you understand what they mean. First names traditionally come from Islam, and are chosen for their strong meanings. In the Holy Quran it says, ‘On the day of resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your fathers' names, so give yourselves good names’. This is why most Muslim names are made up of three parts - the given name, fathers name (‘bin’ means son of, ‘bint’ means daughter of ), and their family name. For example, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed Al Maktoum is: Mohammed

bin Rashid

(given name meaning ‘Praised One’)

(son of Rashid)

Al Maktoum

(tribe/family name)

Emiratis can also include their fathers, grandfathers, and in some cases great-grandfathers names, so Sheikh Mohammed’s name could also be written like this. Mohammed (First name)

Rashid

(Father)

Saeed

(Grandfather)

Maktoum

(Great Grandfather)

Al Maktoum

(Tribe/Family)

You will also hear men being called by their sons name, so Sheikh Mohammed’s close friends could call him Abu Rashid (Abu means 'father of ' Rashid - his eldest son).

It’s extremely rare to see the mother’s name included, however it can happen. The most obvious case is Isa bin Maryam ( Jesus son of Mary).

DRINKING WATER

Tap water in Dubai is processed through large desalination plants and is perfectly safe to drink. However, it doesn’t taste particularly nice and most residents tend to drink bottled water or use a water cooling machine. If you are on a self-catering holiday there is absolutely no problem using tap water for cooking. Bottled water is sold at supermarkets, shops and petrol stations and is cheap at around Dhs 2 per litre bottle. Please try to remember that you are in a desert environment and with over 2 million people in Dubai and an obvious lack of rainfall, it’s everyone’s responsibility to preserve water. So remember to turn off the taps and try not to use running water for shaving or brushing your teeth! If you travel outside the city, it’s best to be cautious and don’t drink from the tap, and make sure you have a good supply of bottled water to hand, especially if you are going to an isolated area!

CAR RENTAL

The road network around the UAE is expanding daily, and hiring a car is a great way to get out and see the Emirates. On a visit visa you can use your normal driving license (residents need a UAE license) to hire anything from economy models to top of the range sports cars. All the vehicles are left-hand drive and most (if not all) are automatic. And watch out for the speed cameras, or you could be hit with a big fine when you return the car! Petrol is cheap compared to Europe, with prices ranging between Dhs 1.72 and Dhs 1.83 per litre. Unleaded petrol is called ‘Special’ and you can expect to pay about Dhs 80 to fill an economy car and up to Dhs 150 for a large car or 4x4.

LIMOUSINES

For the ultimate night out with friends, or to make a real impression, why not hire a chauffeur driven limousine and arrive in style. A limousine ride in Dubai is a great way to see the city and most companies will customise the tour to suit your needs. You can find all types of luxury transportation available and the prices are surprisingly affordable (especially when split between a group of people) and include the driver, insurance, unlimited mileage and soft drinks. When Discover Dubai readers book 3 hours with Dubai Exotic Limo (see advert opposite) they will receive 1 hour's use of the limousine free! CULTURE & HERITAGE Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum’s House

Built in 1896 from coral covered in lime and sand, and situated on Dubai Creek next to the Heritage and Diving Village, Sheikh Saeed’s house is one of the most popular and best known sights in Dubai. This was the house of the grandfather of the current ruler and has now been turned into a museum with photographs depicting the history of Dubai and its swift rise to prominence. Open daily from 7.30am to 9pm and 3.30pm to 8pm on Friday. Call 04-3937139.

Heritage and Diving Village

The Heritage Village incorporates a small museum displaying ancient artifacts dating as far back as 550BC and remains dating from the 6th century. The Village also displays and sells traditional crafts, pottery, woven goods and Bedouin jewellery, and there is a small souq (market) where visitors can try traditional Arabic coffee and bread. Pearl diving started around seven thousand years ago and the Diving Village displays historical features on what was once the major industry of Dubai and the oldest profession in the region. Entrance is free. Call 04-3937151.

Bayt Al Wakeel Maritime Museum and Burj Nahar Situated near the abra (water taxi) station at Dubai Creek, the restored Bayt Al Wakeel museum was Dubai’s first office building. Built in 1934, the building has been completely restored and is now a popular museum and restaurant depicting Dubai’s oncetraditional fishing and maritime history and culture. Call 04-3530530. On the opposite side of Dubai Creek you will find Burj Nahar, one of three watchtowers which were used to guard Dubai. Set amongst beautiful gardens, Burj Nahar is a fine example of an old watchtower and is a wonderful photo opportunity. 24 | MAY Discover Dubai

JUMEIRAH MOSQUE

Situated on Jumeirah Beach Road, the enchanting Jumeirah Mosque with its huge central dome is the best known mosque in Dubai. There is an organised tour every Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at 10am and you can book by calling the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding on 04-3536666. Please remember that Jumeirah Mosque is a place of worship and you will be expected to cover shoulders, arms and legs whilst inside the building.

Grand Mosque

Located near the Ruler’s Court, the Grand Mosque opened in 1900 AD as a Quranic school and was built in a traditional Islamic style. In 1998 the mosque went through a full refurbishment programme consisting of large and small domes covered with stained glass panels, sand-colored walls, wooden shutters and the tallest minaret in Dubai. Non-muslims are not allowed inside the mosque, but this is a good photo opportunity.

Al Fahidi Fort and Dubai Museum

The main attraction in the district of Bur Dubai is Al Fahidi Fort which incorporates Dubai Museum. Built in the late 18th Century, the Fort has been a seat of government, the ruler’s main residence, a military barracks, a prison, and now provides the starting point for a walking tour of the ancient Bastakiya district. The restored fort provides a fascinating insight into days of old, with many interesting archaeological finds displayed in cavernous underground rooms including spears, armour, khanjar knives and cannons, many of which are inscribed with the maker’s name. Dubai Creek and Abra Rides

The best way to see the impressive buildings that have sprung up along Dubai Creek is from the waterway, and bustling abra stations will provide you with a quick and efficient way to cross the Creek. Abras are small barges which used to be rowing boats but are now powered by diesel engines and can seat about 20 people. Incidentally, the work force commute across the Creek on a regular basis and there are over 17,500 crossings per day, so if you’re wearing expensive or light coloured clothing I advise you to remain standing for the trip, as the bench seats can get a little grubby. Abras can also be hired for private trips along the Creek and if you negotiate well with the boat captains you should get a good deal.

GOLD SOUK With imports of over 500 tonnes per year and an annual business worth in excess of Dhs 25 billion, it is little wonder that Dubai is known as the City of Gold. There are over 800 jewellery shops in Dubai, and with no taxes, low import duties and high turnovers allowing for lower margins, Dubai is one of the cheapest city in the world to buy gold jewellery. The Gold Souk is in Deira (the old part of town) and even if you’re not looking to buy, it’s worth a visit to see the glittering array of merchandise on offer (especially in the evening). If you are looking for something, don’t feel pressured into buying from the first shop, as there’s plenty of choice - and be prepared to barter.

Spice Souk

Located close to the Gold Souk, all you have to do is follow your nose and take in the breathtaking selection of spices such as ginger, chillies, cardamom and frankincense, all displayed in huge jute sacks ready to burst at the seams. Wandering around the stalls is a pleasant way to pass an evening and the fragrances can really help to work up an appetite. This is a working souq which sells goods to locals and sailors from the dhows, and is a good place to buy incense burners, saffron, rose water, henna kits and shisha pipes. 26 | MAY Discover Dubai

Shows run every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm Sunday to Wednesday, and 11.30pm Thursday to Saturday. The Dubai Fountain is located next to The Dubai Mall and entrance is free (get there early to avoid the crowds). And now you have the opportunity to navigate the 30-acre Burj Lake (home to The Dubai Fountain) from an abra. Each abra can accommodate 6 people and will navigate a defined path that doesn’t interfere with the fountain’s grid (rides are held between performances to ensure your safety). Boats operate every 30 minutes between 5.45pm and 11.15pm, Saturday to Thursday. Price is Dhs 65 and the ticket counter and abra bay are located at the waterfront promenade of The Dubai Mall.

DESERT SAFARIS Safaris come highly recommended and are a real ‘must do’ for anyone coming to Dubai. There are numerous companies offering desert safaris who will take you for some serious ‘dune bashing’ over some enormous sand dunes - think rollercoaster with bumps thrown in for good measure! Safaris can incorporate a multitude of activities, from breathtaking photos of the sand dunes and local wildlife, to camel rides, sand boarding, bedouin camps, dune buggies, dressing up in a dishdasha or abaya and magnificent displays from a local falconer. In the evenings you could be smoking shisha and indulging in traditional food from the local bbq, and after the meal a belly dancer may well provide entertainment whilst you enjoy a drink or Arabic coffee (bedouin camps are licensed to sell alcohol). Desert safaris may not be suitable for very young children who may get scared, or the elderly or infirm, as passengers tend to get thrown about quite a lot. 28 | MAY Discover Dubai

Seawings

Seawings have been providing sightseeing tours of the UAE’s skyline since 2007. Their fleet of Seaplanes take off from Dubai Creek and Jebel Ali, and offer luxury leather seating, large windows and air-conditioned cabins.

What we did?

We opted for the 40 minute Silver package from the Creek site and arrived 45 minutes before the flight to complete the paperwork and receive a safety brief. The staff were very helpful and escorted us to the pontoon where the plane was waiting. The take off was really smooth and seeing Dubai slowly fall away underneath you is a fantastic sight.

What we saw?

We had breathtaking views of the Dubai Creek, Port Rashid, Burj Al Arab, World Islands, Palm Jumeirah, the Marina, Burj Khalifa and all the bits in-between. The pilots are very good and give a running commentary about the sites as you fly past. To see these things from a bird’s eye view really does make you appreciate the hard work and achievements that have made.

Verdict

The thrill of flying in a Seaplane is amazing and everyone had a window seat so you can take great photos from altitudes up to 800

There are some great restaurants in Dubai, from world famous names to hidden gems on the high street, and with an abundance to choose from, you will not be disappointed.

LICENSED RESTAURANTS

Be aware that alcohol in general and wine especially can be quite expensive in Dubai and can significantly increase your bill. If you like a glass of wine with your meal then you will need to book a restaurant in one of the many hotels, which may sound strange at first, but you will soon get used to accessing restaurants via a hotel lobby, and in some circumstances, a lift! Some hotels will reserve seating for their own guests, so we highly recommend that you pre-book a table. Likewise, it is advisable to be dressed in smart casual clothes - tailored shorts don't always cut it in Dubai! Friday brunches are very popular, and whilst they may appear expensive, when you consider that most include free-flowing alcoholic drinks, they represent great value.

We recommend... & Tried

ASADO, THE PALACE, THE OLD TOWN This lively Argentinean restaurant serves premium cuts of meat prepared in Asado Criollo-style on an open Parrilla grill. With both an a la carte menu and a set menu offering the best of Argentinean cuisine, complimented by the largest collection of Argentinean beverages in the Middle-East, it's hard to go wrong.

What we ate

For the starters we choose the grilled provolone spiced cheese with olive oil and oregano and the grilled home-made chorizo with potato salad. For the main course I choose the beef tenderloin steak and my partner went for the Parrillada Argentina, the most varied mixed grill in the world, which included baby goat, veal brisket, lamb chops, baby chicken, short ribs, sirloin steak, veal sweet breads, beef inside skirt and Argentinean sausage all served on a small grill, which looked very impressive!

Verdict

We sat outside enjoying the live entertainment together with a great view of the Dubai Fountain.

The service was fantastic – you even get a tutorial on the different cuts of meat available in a glass cabinet brought to your table. But it’s the food, especially the meats, where this restaurant really excels. Everything we tried was fantastically flavoured and cooked to melt in the mouth perfection. Definitely one to try!

NIGHTLIFE & entertainment

Nightlife &

entertainment Dubai doesn’t stop when the sun goes down and after 9pm the city comes alive with an energetic and cosmopolitan atmosphere buzzing through its multitude of nightspots.

M

ost clubs are open until 3am with some of the best DJs in the world performing on a regular basis. Add this to a youthful population, a large number of tourists and free drinks for ladies during the week, and you can usually find a great night out. Thursday night is the biggest night as the weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, however Saturday can also be quite busy, making it a virtual 3 day weekend! Dubai’s nightlife is mainly centred around the hotels, and given the hot climate during the day and people eating late, the bars and clubs don’t usually get busy until around 11pm. The dress code for most clubs is smart casual, and wearing trousers, shoes and a collared shirt may help you gain entrance. You also need to be aware of the ‘No Dancing’ rule - it’s illegal to dance in a bar or club if they don’t have a dance license, but don’t worry, the security staff will let you know...

LADIES’ NIGHTS

In an attempt to promote the quieter nights of the week (normally Sundays and Tuesdays), certain pubs, bars and clubs offer free drinks to ladies to entice them inside, hoping the men will follow closely behind and spend their hard-earned cash. The legal drinking age in Dubai is 21, so if in doubt, take some form of photo ID.

GETTING AROUND Dubai

Getting around

Dubai

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Public transport in Dubai is made up of Marine Transport (Abra, Water Bus, Water Taxi and Ferry Dubai), Buses, Taxis and the Metro, and you can use a Nol card or Nol ticket on most of these systems.

WHAT IS A NOL CARD?

A Nol (meaning fare) card is an electronic payment card. Of the 3 cards available we recommend Silver, which costs Dhs 20 (including Dhs 14 credit) and can be loaded with up to Dhs 500 credit. Other cards available are Blue - a personalised card with added security and online services, and Gold - which gives you privileged access to the Metro’s Gold Class seats (you will be charged the premium fare even if there are no seats available!). Nol cards are easy to use and are available from any ticket office.

WHAT IS A NOL TICKET?

The Nol Red ticket is a paper-based system for occasional travellers. It can be bought from any ticket vending machine for Dhs 2 and can be loaded with up to 10 single trips. Red Tickets can only be used on one mode of transport at a time (e.g. Bus only, Metro only), so moving between the Bus and Metro isn’t allowed. It also needs to be loaded with the correct trip beforehand, so make sure you know which zones you’ll pass through, or you’ll get penalised.

MARINE TRANSPORT

Dubai has a combination of water taxis, ferries and abras to move people around the city. Dubai Water Taxis are a private service that will come to the station nearest to you. They operate between 10am to 10pm and cost Dhs 400 per hour. Dubai Ferry service is available from Ghubaiba and Marina Mall stations. Tickets cost Dhs 75 Gold (14 seats) and Dhs 50 Silver (84 seats - 2 seats for special needs). To book Marine Transport call 800-9090 or visit www.rta.ae for more information. 70 | MAY Discover Dubai

You can also find Motorized and Rowing Abra’s and Water Buses to transport you around Dubai Creek and Dubai Marina.

PUBLIC BUSES

There are numerous bus stations located throughout the city, all with Air Conditioned shelters. The main bus terminals are located at Ghubaiba, Gold Souk, Satwa, Al Quoz, Karama, Rashidiya and Al Qusais, and your Nol card will get you around without the need to worry about having the correct change. Call 04-2065555 or visit www.rta.ae for information about routes and timings.

DUBAI TAXI

Taking a taxi in Dubai is cheap and generally safe, and one of the fastest and most popular ways of getting around the city. You can find taxis outside malls, hotels and official taxi ranks, or wave them down in the street. Special Services Taxis with a pink roof are dedicated for ladies and families. Specially equipped vehicles are also available for those with special needs (booked 24hours in advance). Tips Avoid getting into unmarked taxis, not only are they illegal, you could become the victim of a scam. Try to identify a landmark near your destination and keep Discover Dubai handy so you can check the map. Tipping the driver isn’t mandatory, but as in most places it seems the right thing to do. www.mydubaiconnection.com

You can book a taxi by calling the numbers below or using the online booking service at www.etaxi.ae. You can also SMS the taxi rank number to 4774. GETTING AROUND Dubai

The Dubai Metro

The Dubai Metro is a driverless public transport system linking the main areas of Dubai and each station is supported by a bus terminal to help you get to your destination.

Buying your ticket

To travel on the metro you need a Nol card or a Nol ticket. The Silver Nol card is ideal if you’re planning to use the Metro regularly, or if you want to travel in style a Gold card will give you access to the Metro’s Gold Class seats. If you’re only going to use the metro occasionally, go for a Red Nol ticket. To buy or top-up a Nol card, or add trips to your ticket, just go to the ticket office within each station. Each time you travel, just enter your ticket or tap the card at the fare gate and it will automatically deduct the correct fare. It's easy!
