Welcome to our city

Dubai is one of seven emirates that forms the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Often recognised for its iconic towers, man-made islands and malls, Dubai is undoubtedly a success story as is this young country itself. About the UAE

Just 45 years old, this Islamic and Arab country has achieved tremendous success, a combination of the founding fathers’ achievements and steady guidance from its leaders. Six emirates (Abu Dhabi {the capital}, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah) got together on 2nd December 1971 to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, joined on 10th February 1972. Prior to being known as the UAE, the seven sheikhdoms were known as the Trucial States (as per the treaty relations established with the British in the 19th Century). In early 1968, the British decided to withdraw their involvement in the Trucial States and thus a federation was born.

Founding father of the UAE

A driving force behind the formation of the federation, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first President of the UAE.

Government

The UAE is run by a federal government and local governments of the seven emirates, with powers and roles being defined by the constitution. Traditional governance still exists, with the ‘majlis’ concept giving citizens free access to the rulers. The current President of the UAE is His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while the VicePresident and Prime Minister is His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Religion

The official religion of the UAE is Islam, and you will find many mosques throughout the city. Non-Muslims are not permitted entry into most mosques.

Population

The estimated population of Dubai is approximately 2.7 million people. Around 80% of those are expatriates who are attracted by the tax-free working conditions and the relatively crime-free lifestyle.

City basics Local time The UAE is four hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The UAE does not use daylight saving. Currency The local currency is the Emirati dirham (commonly written as AED or DHS on menus and price tags), and it is pegged to the US dollar. There are 100 fils to one dirham. Coins come in 25 fils, 50 fils and 1 dirham. Notes are issued in denominations of: Dhs 5, Dhs 10, Dhs 20, Dhs 50, Dhs 100, Dhs 200, Dhs 500 and Dhs 1,000.

Tip: always try to have a selection of smaller notes available for cheaper items, as it can be difficult getting change for a Dhs 500 or Dhs 1,000 note.

Money exchange and banking Exchanging cash or travellers' cheques is relatively easy with exchange centres located in most shopping malls and throughout the city. Banks are open from Sunday to Thursday and operate shorter hours on Saturday. They are closed on Fridays. The exchange rates (at the time of going to press) are: One USD = Dhs 3.67 One GBP = Dhs 4.76 One Euro = Dhs 4.08 Language The official language is Arabic, although English is the most commonly used language in all areas that incorporate tourism and commerce. Hindi, Farsi and Urdu are also widely used. Photography The UAE has strict laws, and taking pictures or videos is permissible only if it does not infringe on the privacy of others.

Public display of affection The UAE is an Islamic country, and these acts are offensive and will land you in serious trouble. Refrain from hugging or kissing in public places.

Alcohol Alcohol may be consumed at licensed outlets. There is zero tolerance to driving under the influence of alcohol. #discover_dxb

Emirati dress Emirati men wear a

kandura, a long white

robe, that has no collar. It has a long loose tassel, known as a tarboosh, with matching embroidery on the sleeves. Temperature It is advisable to carry a shawl or jumper as most malls have their air conditioners set at very low temperatures in summer.

Water Residents consume bottled water, and it is easily available in supermarkets. Note: only a handful of restaurants provide complimentary drinking water.

The white headscarf, known as a gutra, is fixed in place with a black rope, known as an agal. For weddings and religious holidays such as Eid, a black garment, bisht, with golden embroidery on the sides is worn on top of the kandura.

Most women from the Gulf wear a loose-fitting black cloak, known as an abaya, on top of their outfit. It protects from the high temperatures and is decorated with embroidery patterns or crystals. The black scarf, shayla, which covers the hair is traditionally made from black sheer material. Dress code Tourists and residents are expected to dress modestly in public places. What is life like for elderly The elderly Emirati are the heads of our households. For many Emirati families, there is a chair or space on a carpet we are used to finding an elder member of the family; a grandfather or grandmother. Out of habit they relax in that location and it becomes the axis to which the family gravitates towards, no matter how far they wonder. The elderly are always to be respected, listened to and made to feel they are accompanied in this life and not alone. They are a vast source of traditional knowledge. How are we in 2017 supposed to know how to keep cool if the electricity goes out, except from talking to them? How do we feed a family of six on five dirhams at the end of the month without their practical advice from experience? How do we understand what are priorities, except from those who lived without much of what we have today? Therefore, some of their children and spouses will either stay living in their parents’ house or bring them to one of theirs. Either way they are the crown jewel of the house; always attended to and beloved. 8 | OCTOBER DISCOVER DUBAI

I will never forget the funniest morning I ever had in Al Ain. My elderly relatives were nearly ninety years old when they passed on, now enjoying their view of the hereafter, but a few years ago, it was quite a different story. Busy and loud, our elderly relatives were the soul of our family. One morning I was sitting in the main majlis building, awaiting family members as they woke. A car came through the gate and out stepped our grandfathers older brother, who had come from a few streets away, driven by his driver. In his unique voice that seemed to crackle with happiness no matter the subject, he asked me to get his brother quickly. I offered him coffee as is tradition, but no, he only wanted his brother. Off I went to the main house, down to the special, private apartment grandfather enjoyed at the end of the balcony. I could hear his voice reciting poetry; a constant from his lips during his happy mornings but water was pouring out of his room. In local Arabic mixed with Yasi – the language of the tribe, I told grandfather #discover_dxb

Emirati people? his brother was waiting for him. Not amused his recitation was interrupted, he said he would go later. While trying to be diplomatic, I explained I had been asked to hurry, so perhaps it was urgent. The source of the flood was a kandoora, the long white national dress of men, had been rinsing in a sink with the faucet left on but the fabric had covered the drain. There was no doubt this was an attempt to take care of his daily tasks himself. With the sink cleared and a maid on her way, I helped him over the water but again he got distracted with something in the main house. Off I ran to alert his brother, they would be together shortly, but I found him asleep snoring in the majlis. Assuming grandfather was on his way, I went to our maternal grandmother’s apartment, who isn’t related to my grandfather, and out of modesty lives on the opposite side of the main house. There she was sitting wondering about her lost camels. I assured her, the camels were no longer lost. They had not been lost for roughly seventy years. Sometimes we needed a driver to call in saying the camels were indeed in their pens, while he was carrying out errands with no connection whatsoever to the camels. I concluded my circle, by going back to the majlis inside the house to get some tea, only to find grandfather napping on the couch, in the completely wrong section of the compound than where his sleeping brother lay. I sat down at his feet thinking, this was a crazy morning, but perfect. Later in the day, lunch would be served to them, and at least one man from the family would come home from work to eat with grandfather. On a rare day that did not happen, the late afternoon was never as content as it should feel. The elderly should be cared for, but in a respectful way so they still feel as head of the family. Decisions are deferred to them about many subjects. They are to be greeted first by visitors. They are our beloved kings and queens of the compounds you see scattered across the towns and cities. Dubai's heritage sites Astonished by Dubai’s shimmering skyline and architecture, most people overlook the rich legacy of history and tradition associated with this beautiful city. Want a taste of this city’s culture? This guide will help.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood Built in 1859, the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood has the largest concentration of traditional courtyard houses in Dubai, and looking across the endless signature wind towers really gives you a feeling of what life was like all those years ago. Today, the district is home to cultural and artistic activities, including Sikka Art Fair and events for National Day. Entry is free. Call 600-560000. Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, Bur Dubai. Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum’s House Built in 1896 on the banks of Dubai Creek, this was the home of the ruling family until 1958. An architectural marvel, the building is now a museum with a unique collection of photographs showing Dubai, its souks and traditional celebrations since the 1940s as well as a pearl diving display. Admission is Dhs 3. The museum is open from 8am to 8.30pm from Saturday to Thursday and from 3pm to 9.30pm on Fridays. Call 04-3937139. Al Shindagha area, Bur Dubai. Majlis Ghorfat Umm Al Sheif Established to be the summer resort of the late ruler, the space provides a glimpse of the design elements in traditional Emirati majlises. It showcases traditional earthenware alongside modern instruments as well as defence tools such as rifles and daggers. Dubai's museums

From Dubai Museum, which attracts over one million visitors a year, to the currency-dedicated Coins Museum, here are four places that provide an insight into the city's history. Coffee Museum The two-storey venue focuses on educating visitors about coffee, one of the world’s most loved drinks. The museum offers live demonstrations of brewing and roasting styles in different countries as well as a wide selection of coffee related documentaries and books. Don’t leave without sipping traditional coffee brewed in the museum’s custom-built brew bar. Open from 9am to 5pm on all days expect Fridays. The store retails a wide range of barista equipment and coffee beans. Call 04-3538777. Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, Bur Dubai.

Coins Museum Built with stone, leaves, teak wood and trunks of palm trees, the Coins Museum spans two floors and gives visitors the opportunity to see more than 470 rare coins dating back to different historical areas. Coins are displayed in special cabinets with magnifying screens allowing a closer look and touch screens providing detailed information about each coin, ranging from the different shapes to types of metals used and methods and dates of minting. Plus, visitors can get acquainted with the close link between the monetary system of the British Empire, India and countries in the region. Entry is free. The museum is open from 8am to 2pm from Sunday to Thursday. Call 04-3920093. Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, Bur Dubai.

Al Fahidi Fort and Dubai Museum Dating back to 1787, Al Fahidi Fort was once the premises of the monarch and a fort of defence and has since been an arsenal for artillery and weapons and a prison. In 1971 (the year the federation was formed), it opened as a museum that provides a fascinating insight into Dubai’s history. In 1995, an underground museum was established and added to the fort. Rare authentic monuments and antiques are scattered in different wings of the museum. Tickets are priced at Dhs 3 for adults and Dhs 1 for children under the age of six. Naif Museum One wing of Naif Fort, Dubai’s first police station, has been converted into a museum to share the history of the police and security services in Dubai. Consisting of two showrooms, the museum gives visitors the opportunity to view how uniforms have evolved over the years, the weapons used from formation up until now and models of arrest and detention rooms. Dubai's souks

Souks are traditional marketplaces or bazaars that retail a wide range of commodities. Here are three popular souks in Deira, historically the commercial centre of Dubai, worth ticking off the list when you are in Dubai. Gold Souk Even if you are not looking for anything specific, the Gold Souk is worth a visit to see the glittering array of merchandise on offer (especially in the evening). Approximately 10 tons of gold is present at any given time in the souk. There are over 1,000 jewellery shops in Dubai, and it is one of the cheapest cities in the world to buy gold jewellery. If you are looking to buy, don’t feel pressured into deciding at the first shop. There's plenty of choice and everyone's prepared to bargain. Spice Souk Once on the Deira side of the creek, all you need to do is follow your nose and take in the breath-taking aromas of a selection of spices such as ginger, chillies, cardamom and frankincense, all displayed in huge jute sacks ready to burst at the seams. Wandering around the stalls is a pleasant way to pass an evening, and the fragrances can really help to work up an appetite. This is a good place to buy incense burners, saffron, rose water, henna kits and shisha pipes. Perfume Souk One of the things Middle Eastern Arabs are known for is their strong, spicy fragrances and hard-hitting perfumes. The Perfume Souk is the ideal place to explore these alluring scents and a great opportunity to find your perfect one. Besides traditional perfumes (oudbased ones), shops in this market also sell branded fragrances from around the world, so it is well worth a fragrant tour of the many shops. 12 | OCTOBER DISCOVER DUBAI

Burj Al Arab Referred to as 'the world's most luxurious hotel', the Burj Al Arab was designed to resemble the billowing sail of a ship. Since its opening, it's been one of the most photographed structures in the world.

Dubai Water Canal The Dubai Water Canal is a 3.2km long waterway which winds its way from the creek in Old Dubai through Business Bay to the Arabian Gulf. Its highlight is a beautiful motion-operated water feature.

The Dubai Fountain The Dubai Fountain, a water, music and light spectacle, delights thousands of visitors for free every day. With the Dubai Fountain Lake Ride you can set sail on the ultimate ride with front row seats to the best show in town.

Jumeirah Mosque Situated on Jumeirah Beach Road, this beautiful mosque is perhaps the bestknown one in Dubai. Non-Muslims can visit through organised tours held six days a week. Call 04-3536666.

Record-breaking spots A trip to Dubai is incomplete if you don't include its record-breaking spots and experiences to your itinerary. After all, this city boasts more records than just being home to the world's tallest tower. Here's a little guide to help you plan your visit.

World’s tallest building: Burj Khalifa. On its opening in 2010, Burj Khalifa took the crown of being the tallest building in the world from Taipei 101. The mixed-use development includes the Armani Hotel, envisioned by fashion icon Giorgio Armani, as well as residential and commercial space. Boast a ‘Burj Khalifa’ address for a few days by checking into the Armani which occupies 11 floors of the building, Call 04-8883888.

The world’s highest restaurant: At.Mosphere. Housed on the 22nd floor of Burj Khalifa (442m from the ground), At.Mosphere is an upscale fine dining restaurant that offers views unmatched by any other restaurant in Dubai. For a casual experience, guests can opt for the lounge which serves beverages and light fare with a side of live entertainment. The afternoon tea is highly recommended. The highest outdoor observation deck in the world: At The Top, Burj Khalifa Sky. The experience begins at the Burj Khalifa SKY Lounge from where visitors are escorted to a dedicated elevator that takes them to Level 125 (one level above the ‘At The Top’ observatory). At 456m, this spacious deck offers 360-degree views of the city. The next elevator takes visitors to Level 148 where they can sit back in the luxury of its lounges and appreciate the breath-taking views. Labelled the world’s tallest hotel, JW Marriott Marquis is a set of 72-storey twin towers in Business Bay, not too far from Burj Khalifa. To witness something equally remarkable, save the date for the annual New Year's Eve fireworks at Burj Khalifa. It's so popular that spectators gather around the area six to seven hours before the show so they can secure the best spots. World’s largest mall: The Dubai Mall. Known as the largest mall in the world (by total area), The Dubai Mall also prides itself on being one of the world’s most visited lifestyle destinations, beating spots like New York’s Time Square and Canada’s Niagara Falls in the past. With more than 1,200 outlets to shop at, numerous restaurants and cafes to dine at and entertainment attractions such as an ice-rink, aquarium and cinemas, there’s enough to cater to all ages. Dubai Festival City’s newest attraction, Imagine, set two world records - the largest water screen projection and the largest permanent projection mapping in the world - within six months of launching. Through its two shows, ‘A Child’s Dream’ and ‘Stardancer’, Imagine showcases the latest entertainment technology in water, pyrotechnics, lasers, lights and dramatic effects. Sharks If water is your thing, Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo maybe right up your street. One of the largest indoor aquariums in the world, the 270-degree glass tunnel running through the centre helps to illuminate the marvels of the ocean floor, while the Underwater Zoo offers an interactive approach to the ecology and sustainability of marine life. Horses / camels Al Sahra Equestrian Centre is set amongst miles of glorious natural desert. Whether you are a complete novice or an expert, enjoy the freedom of riding a horse in the desert. Take the afternoon ride and watch the sunset over Dubai, or see the desert waking up in the morning and catch sight of a desert fox or gazelle. You can also try a 90-minute camel encounter. Falcons Emiratis are regarded as some of the best falconers in the world. Although hunting with falcons was an important part of life in the UAE, it is now illegal, and today falconry is mainly enjoyed as a traditional sport. Fun activities Ski Dubai Too hot outside? Then Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates offers a wintery wonderland that boasts a 400m ski run with five multidirectional slopes, purpose-built jumps and a snowboarding park. If you are looking to hit the piste, improve your skills tobogganing or just rolling around in the snow, Ski Dubai has it all. Off the slopes, why not check out the mind-blowing snow park or meet and play with Ski Dubai's resident snow penguins. Call 800-386. Mall of the Emirates. Dubai Ice Rink The Olympic-size ice rink offers world-class facilities for a variety of skating abilities. In addition to professional ice skating lessons for children and adults, the venue also hosts disco and mega skate sessions (the schedule is available online). Life's a beach

On a breezy day, this is where kite enthusiasts meet to fly their kites, making for a truly beautiful sight especially when seen at sunset. Black Palace Beach

It's not described as a hidden gem for no reason. Not the easiest to find, this beautiful beach lies close to the royal fortresses at Al Sufouh. Sunset Beach

Popular with surfers and offering direct views of the Burj Al Arab, this spot near the wave-shaped Jumeirah Beach Hotel is one of Dubai’s most photographed beaches. 4X4 Beach

Named after the offroad vehicles lined up along the shore, this public beach is one of the more basic options. There are no real facilities onsite, but if you are staying nearby, it’s worth a visit for a refreshing swim or to watch the sunset. Make sure you have your camera though. Jebel Ali Beach

On the way to Abu Dhabi, turn right off Sheikh Zayed Road and follow signs to JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort. At the roundabout, follow the road and turn left down a sand track to the beach. Dubai's culinary gems You don’t have to empty your pockets to enjoy a good meal, especially not in Dubai. While the city has many top-notch restaurants, it is also the turf to homegrown eateries. These places might be little in size, but they dish out food big on flavour.

Al Ustad Special Kebab Around since 1978, this Iranian restaurant is no secret to ardent foodies. It specialises in South Iranian cuisine, mainly kebabs as well as chicken and meat dishes. At any given point, one of the three brothers will always be around to greet diners, take orders and involve themselves in friendly banter. It is normal to be distracted by photos that are plastered on the walls and memorabilia such as clocks and mobile phones hung on the walls. Currencies from around the world are lined under the glass top dinner tables. You haven't enjoyed your kebabs if they haven't been eaten with a side of rice, drizzled with melted butter and topped with barberries. Mains range between Dhs 25 and Dhs 32. Call 04-3971933. The curries are flavourful, the biryani rice is fragrant and the dal is as silky as it gets. For a service team that barely speaks English, you'd be happy to know they rarely get the orders wrong. Once you're past that, you get the crispy, spicy fried fish the eatery is famous for. Al Reef The go-to place after a night out, Al Reef is busiest in the early hours of the morning on weekends. The most demanded item on its menu is the manaeesh (a flatbread topped with cheese, herbs or ground meat). Not too different to a pizza, this Levantine snack costs less than Dhs 15 and is something your stomach will appreciate after a binge drinking session. Caution: service staff are not the friendliest. Al Mallah Residents are fans of this establishment and chances are you will become one too after you try their food. Nailing Lebanese fare, the restaurant is best-known for its juicy and tender shawarmas (chicken or meat grilled on a spit for as long as a day and then shaved off and served as a wrap with toppings including tahini and pickled turnips). Ditch the malls for an alternate shopping experience in Dubai. Dubai has many markets, and you can be assured what you take home from these places are generally much cheaper than what you'd find in most shopping malls. Meena Bazaar Located in the heart of Bur Dubai, be warned: Meena Bazaar isn't the easiest of locations to get to, but it is your go-to place for a traditional shopping experience. You know you've arrived when you hear blaring horns, see shops with decorative lights and haggling customers. Most shops specialise in textiles but one can find imitation jewellery, Indian outfits and watch repair shops too. Note: first-timers are likely to get swindled. Naif Souk Once a camel market, this is one of Dubai's oldest souks. Today, tourists can buy anything ranging from leather goods to souvenirs, but it is best known as the place for getting abayas (black cloaks worn by Arab women) at reasonable prices. The next most popular item in this market is electronics. Tip: Make sure you bargain with shopkeepers. The best time to visit Naif souk is after sunset when the area comes alive. Satwa It isn't half as stylish as most districts in Dubai, but Satwa is a fascinating area. Here you will find interesting souvenirs ranging from toy camels to models of Burj Khalifa. The best part: You don't have to pay a fortune for them. What to buy

Though Dubai has lovely souvenirs you can take back home, including sand art, magnets and mugs of Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab, here are some of the authentic gifts you really should be after. Sadu cushions Made with ancient Bedouin weaving techniques, known as Al Sadu, this fabric is distinguishable because of its colours - deep reds, black, white, gold and brown. It’s made with wool from camels and goats, and the weave is said to be tight enough that even water won’t go through it. Other than cushions, the fabric is used to make sofas and traditional tents. Dates The sweet fruit has been a food source for survival to Bedouins. Easy to digest, they are high in iron and contain potassium and vitamins too. Gourmet food brand Bateel sells a variety of dates including the sweet, raisin-like Khidri, Medjool, Sekki as well as Khola dates. Bukhoor This refers to wood chips, commonly known as oud, soaked in fragrant oils and burned in a traditional incense burner, mabkhara. In Arab countries, the bukhoor is passed among guests at a gathering as a gesture of hospitality. Most women wave their clothing or hair above the smoke so that it picks up the scent. Getting around Dubai

Public transport in Dubai is made up of taxis, buses, trams, the metro and marine transport (abras, water buses, water taxis and ferries). Here's everything you need to know about these modes of transportation that will help you move from place to place. Taxis: Taking a taxi in Dubai is cheap, safe and one of the fastest ways of getting around the city. You can find taxis outside malls, hotels, official taxi ranks, or wave them down in the street. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has also introduced an exclusive dispatch service - Hala taxi - with numerous on-board features such as free Wi-Fi, weather reports, news and entertainment systems.

explore the city The Dubai Metro is a driverless public transport system linking the main areas of Dubai, and each station is supported by a bus and taxi terminal to help you get to your destination.

Marine transport. Dubai has a combination of water taxis and ferries to move people around the city. Dubai Water Taxi is a private service that will come to the station nearest to you. It operates between 10am and 10pm and costs Dhs 400 per hour. Dubai Ferry service is available from Al Ghubaiba, Marina Mall and Dubai Water Canal marine stations. Ticket prices start from Dhs 25 for Silver category and Dhs 35 for Gold category. You can also find motorised and rowing abras and water buses to transport you around Dubai Creek and Dubai Marina. The Dubai Tram system, which serves 11 stations, runs along Al Sufouh Road from Dubai Marina to Palm Jumeirah and Al Sufouh. It is also connected with the monorail of Palm Jumeirah. Buying your ticket To travel on the metro or tram, you need a Nol card or a Nol ticket. To buy or top-up a Nol card or ticket, just go to the ticket office or ticket machine within each station. What is a Nol card? A Nol card is an electronic payment card, and there are three types available - Silver, Blue and Gold. The Silver card, which can be loaded with up to Dhs 1,000 credit, is recommended for frequent travellers. The Blue card is a personalised card with added security and online services, and the Gold card gives you privileged access to the Gold Class cabins. Nol cards can be used on all modes of public transport and even to pay for parking.

The Dubai Tram runs from 6.30am to 1.30am from Saturday to Thursday and from 9am to 1.30am on Fridays.

Abu Dhabi

The largest of the seven emirates, Abu Dhabi is the capital. When translated from Arabic, the name Abu Dhabi means “The Father of the Gazelle”, and it is said that this probably refers to the gazelles that lived in the emirate. 1. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque One of the world’s largest mosques and an architectural masterpiece, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is visible from each of the bridges on your drive into Abu Dhabi, making for an impressive welcome to the capital! Open to non-Muslims, the mosque features 82 domes held up with over 1,000 columns, 24-carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand knotted carpet. The reflective pools that surround the mosque magnify its beauty, and at night it is transformed by a unique lighting system which reflects the phases of the moon. Al Ain

Commonly referred to as the ‘Garden City’ due to its greenery, Al Ain is popular in the summer because of its low humidity. Located in the eastern region of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain is the birthplace of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. 1. Al Ain Oasis Opened as the UAE’s first curated UNESCO World Heritage site visitor experience, the oasis is spread over 1,200 hectares and contains more than 147,000 date palms of up to 100 different varieties. Visitors get an understanding of Al Ain’s oasis ecosystem, shaped by a complex shared water supply based on both wells and the UAE’s traditional irrigation system, ‘aflaj’. The site also features food and beverage outlets. Open from 8am to 5pm. Call 02-5995438. 2. Al Ain Camel Market Located east of Jebel Hafeet, this is the last souk of its kind in the UAE and is an excellent opportunity to see camels up close and how well they’re cared for. Jebel Hafeet At 1,240m, Jebel Hafeet is the UAE’s second highest peak. Over 500 ancient burial tombs dating back 5,000 years have been found in the foothills. A winding highway, listed among the world’s greatest driving roads, takes visitors to the top, which boasts magnificent views over Al Ain. At the base of the mountain lies the Green Mubazzarah Park. In addition to the hot springs (where you can dip your feet in 40-degree Celsius waters), the location also features flowing streams, a man-made lake and chalets. Close to the peak of the mountain, the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet Al Ain offers accommodation with a view. Sharjah

The third largest emirate, Sharjah is the cultural capital of the UAE. It is also known for its numerous beautiful mosques, its gold souk and the Sharjah National Park. Due to its large Muslim population, alcohol isn’t served in hotels in the emirate. 1. Heart of Sharjah The largest historical preservation and restoration project in the region, Heart of Sharjah is a heritage district that houses galleries and museums. The Sharjah Calligraphy Museum sits in the Heart of Sharjah. Opened in 2002, this museum showcases Arabic calligraphy on different mediums, including paper, wood, canvas and ceramic. Artworks are by local and international calligraphers. The museum is open from 4pm to 8pm on Fridays and from 8am to 8pm during the rest of the week. Entry is Dhs 5 for adults and children above the age of 10. Call 06-5112555. 2. Al Qasba - Eye of the Emirates Visitors can choose from a plethora of activities at Al Qasba, ranked among Sharjah’s top tourist destinations. Get a bird’s-eye view of Sharjah from the 60-metre-high Eye of the Emirates Wheel (Dhs 30 for adults and Dhs 15 for children), take a tour of the lagoons in an abra (traditional boat) or watch the musical fountains dance. Call 800-80000. 3. Al Noor Island Walk through the Butterfly House which has 500 exotic butterflies, or get comfortable with a book at the Literature Pavilion. A long walkway dotted with light installations, trees and miniature gardens links the different areas of the island together. Ajman

Quiet and relaxed compared to the other emirates, much of the activity in Ajman happens along the corniche and its 16km stretch of beach, overlooking the Arabian Gulf. Ajman controls two inland enclaves, Masfut and Manama. 1. Ajman Museum For a taste of culture, head to Ajman Museum. The 18th-century fort, one of the main historical attractions in the UAE, served as the ruler’s residence until 1970. A decade later, it was converted into a museum which displays an assortment of archaeological artefacts, weapons and tools that portray the way of life in the past. The museum is open daily except Fridays from 8am to 8pm. Entry is Dhs 5 for individual tickets and Dhs 15 for family tickets. Call 06-7423824. 2. Ajman Dhow Yard Dhows (traditional Arab sailing vessels) are built by hand at this yard. Visitors can watch master craftsmen at work, using tools and techniques that have been handed down from generation to generation. The experts also make fibreglass dhows, powered by diesel engines, for racing events across the country. The yard is located on the north side of Ajman Creek. 3. Al Zorah Nature Reserve A haven for birds and marine life, Al Zorah Nature Reserve (a part of the Al Zorah community - a new development set along 12km of waterfront and 1.6km of sandy beaches) is best described as a vibrant ecosystem made up of mangroves, turquoise lagoons and sandy beaches. Home to nearly 60 species of birds, including pink flamingo, egret and heron, the mangroves are best explored by kayak, with calm waters making it an easy adventure for novice paddlers. 56 | OCTOBER DISCOVER DUBAI

Umm al-Quwain

Least populated of all the emirates, Umm al-Quwain (simply referred to as UAQ) is in the north of the UAE. When translated from Arabic, the name Umm al-Quwain means ‘Mother of Two Powers’. 1. Al Sinniyah Island One kilometre away from UAQ, this bird sanctuary is popular for day trips. It is home to the UAE's largest Socotra cormorant colony, with over 15,000 pairs making it the third largest colony in the world. During the period between November to March, they are regularly spotted flying a few feet above the sea. Marine life is here remarkable; blacktip reef sharks patrol the outer shoreline, while green turtles are abundant in the inner leads. Between Al-Sinniyah and the mainland is an expansive area of sand and mud flats called Khor al-Beida. 2. Dreamland Aqua Park Celebrating its 20th birthday this year, Dreamland offers visitors low to high thrill attractions. Some of the most popular rides include the Twister, Slide Five and the Twisting Dragon. There's a Dead Sea pool too and waterside camping facilities. Open from 10am to 6pm on weekdays and until 8pm on Fridays. Children pay Dhs 100 and adults pay Dhs 160. Call 06-7681888. 3. Umm Al Quwain airfield An Ilyushin IL-76, built in the Soviet era, sits in the deserted airfield in Umm Al Quwain. Now popular as a backdrop for photographs, the plane arrived in the spot in 1999 with stories of its sudden appearance including an emergency landing as it ran out of fuel to being used as a gate-guard for the airfield. Ras Al Khaimah

Located in the northern part of the UAE, Ras Al Khaimah (or RAK) was originally known as Julfar. It borders Oman’s exclave of Musandam in the south, and the city has two main sections - old Ras Al Khaimah and Nakheel. 1. National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah This museum is in a fort that was the residence of the ruling family up until the early 1960s. It houses an excellent collection of archaeological and ethnological artefacts, including a collection of documents, manuscripts and treaties between the rulers of RAK and Great Britain. Jebel Jais Via Ferrata An exciting mountain adventure on UAE’s highest mountain, the Jebel Jais Via Ferrata involves a combination of walking, climbing and zip lining around a purpose-built course. Professional guides will lead you through the spectacular route which includes three thrilling zip lines – 50m, 60m and 300m long. No prior technical experience is needed as participants are given a safety brief before the experience. Participants should be 12 years or above with a minimum weight of 50kg. The supervised tours (Dhs 400 each) take place at 8am and 1pm, daily, with transportation provided from Hotel Tulip Inn. Call 07-2338998. 3. Ice Land Water Park Probably the coolest place in the desert, Ice Land has more than 30 slides, a huge wave pool, an Olympic-size lap pool and a beach. Some of its gentle attractions include the lazy river, the Penguin Bay (perfect if you want to break out into dance) or the Polar Games section where you can play basketball and volleyball. Fujairah

Nestled between the Hajar Mountains and the Indian Ocean, Fujairah is the fifth largest emirate in the UAE and the only one that is almost completely mountainous and has a coastline solely on the Gulf of Oman and none on the Arabian Gulf. 1. Fujairah Museum Opened in 1991, Fujairah Museum houses archaeological exhibits discovered during numerous excavations all over the emirate in recent years. These include items related to agriculture, fishing, trade, weaving, pottery as well as ancient weapons, costumes and utensils, including pots made of steatite and chlorite and a set of mugs and cups of various shapes and uses. The museum is open from 8am to 6.30pm on all days of the week except Fridays. Entry fee to the museum is Dhs 5. Call 09-2229085. 2. Snoopy Island

Named after the cartoon dog it resembles, this is a popular spot for snorkelling and diving. The reef that surrounds the island is teeming with marine life including jelly fish, but that should not detract from the experience. Access is available from Sandy Beach Resort at Dhs 100 a day. Snorkelers can hire equipment from the beach hotels. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot turtles too. Call 09-2445555. 3. The wadis and mountains ‘Wadi’ is an Arabic term for valley, and Fujairah is extremely popular for its wadis, especially Wadi Ham - the largest and longest one in the UAE. For most of the year it tends to be dry, but when it does rain, expect the spectacular views of a rushing wadi. Those after a hiking adventure can head to Hajar Mountains - its highest point in the UAE is Jabal Yibir at 1,727m. www.discover-dubai.ae
