On October 7th, 2016, I made the most nerve wracking yet fulfilling decisions of my life. I became a 'naturalista'! naturalista: the lifestyle of a woman committed to the development of her natural beauty without the utilization of any chemical procedure. Unfortunately, I used to be that girl that would flat iron her hair to death (literally and figuratively). Don't get me wrong, I used to SLAY my straight hair but little did I know that I was doing more harm than good, ultimately killing my natural hair pattern with all that heat. I remember looking at my hair after washing it one day and, even
April 2016 before journey
Thank God for moms, y'all! Although my mother was telling me all the while that I was damaging my hair by putting so much heat on it (that mother's intuition), of course I didn't listen. When she saw how upset I was, she asked me if I wanted to go completely natural, which would mean chopping off all the dead hair and starting all over again. Little did she know, I had been contemplating back and forth about doing it but I was scared to. She said " Jessica, if you'll go natural, I'll do it with you. I'm getting tired of using all this heat on my hair, too." And that was all she wrote! I began my natural hair journey and I have not looked back since and will never look back. Of course, it was a rough start. I had to do a 'big chop' to remove all those dead parts of my hair. As soon as I did,

though it was wet, it was so dry, brittle, lifeless... and straight in a lot of places. I began to cry, not because I was so vain and worshipped my hair or anything like that, but because I was disappointed in myself for not noticing earlier how bad of a state my hair was in until it was too late .... or so I thought :)

you could see immediately the health and shine in the new growth. I was starting anew. Such a refreshing and happy feeling!!! Am I ever going to straighten my hair again? Absolutely! I'll straighten my hair every now and then, but I'll do it in a way as to not harm my hair so I can continue to SLAY my natural coils and curls!

It's Been Good To Be Together! By Connie Williams, Editor
w/Cynthia Hudgins
There's nothing like returning to your roots... where it all began... where pivotal life-changing decisions were made to help shape and mold you into the person that you are today. Grand Rapids, MI is that place for the Pastor of First Union Missionary Baptist Church, Bruce E. Garmon, Sr. Not only is he a native of the city, but he is also a native of The Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church, where he and around fifty members of First Union MBC traveled to recently to celebrate the Church's 40th Anniversary! Rev. Garmon considered it an honor to be asked to bring the message for the occasion , as this is
the Church that his father, the late Moses Garmon, founded. "We had a blast! We had a good time", was the sentiment of one of the travelers from First Union, Cynthia Hudgins. She and her husband, Richard, got out of their beds early on Friday morning to meet the other travelers for a trip to Grand Rapids for a weekend of fun and fellowship. According to Sister Hudgins, the 'Tampa Crew' left from the St. Pete/ Clearwater airport around 9:00am on the 12th of July, with a two-and-ahalf hour flight ahead of them. Upon arrival, they were met and whisked off by a Charter Bus for a brief tour around the city, with Pastor Garmon

as their tour guide. Since they could not check into their hotel rooms until 3:00, they all went to Big E's Sports Grill for lunch followed by a quick rest before the evening's program began at the Prince of Peace. And what a program it was, said Cynthia. "All I can say is that you should have been there. We truly had a good time!", she professed. "Everything was good!" First Union and the Prince of Peace were on program. First Union's choir, praise dancers and drama ministry along with the choir, praise dancers and others from the POP MBC, brought in the Spirit for a good time in the House of the Lord. Friday night ended with free time to spend as you wished and since the hotel was in walking distance of just about everything, the 'crew' from the 'U' was not at a loss for activities. Saturday's agenda began with breakfast and then off to a picnic hosted by the Prince of Peace family. "Everyone was so nice and friendly", said Sister Hudgins. "You could just feel the love." The picnic was held at a location near Lake Michigan and Sister Hudgins said that a good time was had by all. "The weather was perfect", she said. "It

felt like we were in air-conditioning and we were outside." The Prince of Peace even went as far as to have tee shirts made for their visitors at a very reasonable price. Games (even for the children), food, fun, prizes, fellowship... what more could you ask for?

Sunday's Service was filled with the Holy Ghost! Before Rev. Garrmon, brought the Word (Don't Forget About God), both choirs ministered as well as the praise team from Tampa. Service was followed by "some good homecooked food". All good things must come to an end, and so bright and early Monday morning the crew headed for the airport to head back home to Tampa, only to face multiple departure delays, and even a delay in deboarding the plane once they landed in Tampa. In spite of the nuances that they faced on their return, all-in-all a good time was had by everyone. But like they say, 'be it ever so humble, there's no place like home'. First Union would like to thank Pastor Eula Gaddis and the Prince of Peace family for the hospitality shown them during their stay. Until next time! AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2019

The Tax Deiva Don’t be surprised if you aren't singing We Are Family as you leave your tax preparers office due to the new Family Tax Credit, created under the terms of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that went into effect at the beginning of 2018. The Family Tax Credit qualifications are a little more lax than the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Credit. This credit is $500 per dependent, but that dependent qualification is not just limited to your children. Hence the name Family. Now the credit does cover your children ages 18 or 23 if they are still in school. Wait, what about that brother who just can’t seem to get a job after being out of high school for a couple of years and he has no idea what he wants to do so not in college either? No worries, I know he may be couch cruising at your parents, but at least he can benefit your parents with the family tax credit, if they fall into the guidelines. This credit is really beneficial because as long as someone is your dependent you can claim this credit . Here are some quick facts: $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $

40 DAYS IN THE WORD! For the past several years, the members of First Union MBC have met the challenge of the '40 DAYS IN THE WORD'! challenge written by the under-shepherd of the Church, Pastor B.E. Garmon, Sr. This year found more participants and more passing scores! The challenge began on Ash Wednesday and completed on Resurrection Sunday. Editor
40 DAYS IN THE WORD! By Rev. B.E. Garmon, Sr.
It took quite a while to review 21,200 questions; but the counts are in and the tallies have been made! 79 people signed up for the challenge, and a whopping 53 turned in a lesson! This is phenomenal and my hat is off to everyone who took the time to make the effort. The results are absolutely outstanding! Of the 53 lessons turned in, 30 people scored 91% or better! This is insanely awesome! This shows me that the Church “is” growing Spiritually, and I have to work harder to take the Church even higher! SPIRITUAL GROWTH
Rev. B E. Garmon, Sr.
has been the Pastor of First Union Missionary Baptist Church for the past ten years (he will celebrate eleven years in October 2019). Rev. Garmon holds an Associate’s Degree in Ministry, Bachelor of Arts in Christian Education, Bachelor of Science in Theology, Bachelors of Arts in Apologetics, and a Master’s of Divinity. Pastor Garmon can be reached at: 813-238-1205 (tel-church) b.e.garmon@firstunionmbc.org (email) We live in a time when people are increasingly teaching that everyone is serving the same ‘god’; being referred to by different names and titles. Therefore, we should all just come together into one big ecumenical cluster!
“ecumenical” – root “ecumenism”: relating to, or representing the whole of a body of churches: promoting or tending toward worldwide Christian unity or cooperation. The intent of the ecumenical movement is the belief that all religions worldwide should come together under one umbrella and worship the same “God” that we all call by different names. The female symbol also known as the Venus symbol is a circle with a cross below it. X - is represented by the Jewish Star of David which is also known as the Shield of David. The Star of David is in a shape of a hexagram, which is made up of two equilateral triangles. I - is represented by a Pagan or Wiccan Pentacle atop the letter I. A Pentacle is a five-pointed star within a circle. This symbol is used to represent one as a Pagan or Wiccan. The upward top point of the star represents the spirit. The other four points all represent an element. The four elements are earth, air, fire and water.

The crescent moon and star on the sticker is often used to represent Islam. However, the same symbols were used thousands of years before ever being associated with Islam. God’s Word (Acts 20:27). There are many warnings in Scripture, including warnings from the Lord Himself, about those who would come with the intent of deception (Matthew 7:15: Matthew 24:24; Acts 20:29, 2 Corinthians 11:13). That time is now! Thus Christianity needs as many modern day Apologist as possible to assist in the Great Commission of guiding lost souls out of darkness and into the marvelous light of Christ! ☺ I Remain In “HIS” Service…
Pastor B.E. Garmon, Sr., M.Div.
S - is represented by a Taoist Yin Yang also known as a Taijitu. Yin and Yang represents two opposite, but complementary forces found in nature. Yin is often recognized with shade, darkness and femininity. Yang is often recognized with light and masculinity. T - is represented by a Christian Cross. The Christian Cross is associated with Christianity and the crucifixion of Jesus. The ecumenical movement is another huge step in man’s departure from the static truth of God’s Word. More importantly, this is another major facet of the devil’s scheme towards uniting the world under one single power: Anti-Christ (Revelation 13). Every person has a responsibility to learn the truths of God’s Word for themselves (Hosea 4:6; 2 Timothy 2:15; 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12), this is aided by men of God who have been commissioned by God to teach and preach the whole counsel of

Each year, the men of First Union host a Mother's Dinner for the ladies of First Union Missionary Baptist Church as a show of love and appreciation. On Friday, May 10, 2019 they out-did themselves with a "Mother's Night in White"! The C.J. Long Fellowship Hall was draped in white from ceiling to floor, the Servers (The Men's Ministry of First Union) were dressed in all white, and the guests-of-honor, the Mothers of First Un-
ion of all ages, were also asked to dress in white! More than a job well done, gentlemen. You truly went above and beyond! - 28 -
