POINT, LINE AND PLANE
Point, Line and Plane is the staple to many architectural spaces. Their connection helps to create the foundations, including the walls, floors and roofs of space. This in turn helps give the empahisis of size and movement within a space. It helps to determine our journey within an area and controls the purpose of different defined spaces. These elements can be used and combined in an infinite amount of ways, always controlling our perception of the walls which seem to be being built around us. The following precedents defined to me the connectivity of the elements and how they can work so beatifully in unison to create space, as well as manipulate light and shadow. These spaces further show us the control of movement and how these joined forms can allow us to perceive a space.
Concepts & Final Design
My original three concepts tried to play with the idea of movement and tension. All elements seemed to be connected whilst still not having a complete balance, with the composition aiming to create something straight and methodical, however ‘perfectly imbalanced’. My final design, which drew from the top right concept, displayed this imbalance how I wished it to be portrayed. The giant planes in a folded and uneven nature put tension on the linear poles in the centre. From different angles these tensions created an intriguing and ‘perfectly imbalanced’ space, to contort the individuals view on the product.
MASS Mass is the overwhelming sensation of chlaustrophobia when the walls seem too heavy to stay up. Only cracks and bevels allow light to seep through in moments of darkness. Mass is an interaction between space and being, as we must trust our senses in a space which evokes fear and unknowing. Mass is used to create spaces which will give an experience of form, lighting and movement, as the large scale elements and overwhelming weight seem to crush the remaining space around it. The following precedents will help to highlight the form of Mass and its role in making the individual feel inferior to the space. They help to highlight the way in which light can be manipulated via the form of the elements. Furthermore, it proves how mass can be used within a space to make one manouver and feel small and out of place within that space.
My final Mass piece involved looking at the feeling of mass as a monolythic structure and the role it can play mainly in the underground form. Here it also highlights the use of light and how it manages to decieve and change. Mass is a very claustrophobic and powerful element as its form seems to create its own feeling of helplessness and can be overpowering to the individual. It is a great manipulator of space as it only uses its own form to control and enviornment and its feelings.
FRAME AND INFILL
Frame and Infill helps to create the stability and support of a space, along with the creativity to fill that void. An empty frame makes the indiviudal feel incomplete, as the space around them appears unfinished. Yet when either becoming the infill or having another element added to the space, it can create a completely differentpurpose and meaning. This makes one connect to the interior of the space and allows us to feel attatched to that particular space depending on how we perceive the elements. They can control our emotions in a variety of ways. The frame must be able to support itself over time, whilst working with the inifll to give purpose and meaning to the space.
The following precedents highlighted for me the importance of the two elements working in harmony. Creating a repetition of frame to contrast a variety of uses for infill can be seen in these images. The importance of the frame to withstand time and link with the inifill to create meaning to a space is exhibited within these imagres.
Final Design
The final design concept was to explore the use of fluidity throughout the frame. With the frame being a rather rigid and square shape, I tried to find a continuity which could pass through and create its own feeling. This further creates tension between the different components. The contrast allows for the infill to go beyond the boundaries of a regular infill used to fill in space, and instead evoke its own emotions and purpose to the individual. I did not want it to be merely ‘contained’ by the frame.
HERRING ISLAND A PLACE TO KEEP SECRETS
This project allowed us to maniuplate our ideas from throughout the semester into a singular, finalised product. The site on Herring Island had to overcome the specific properties of the island and also have been influenced by the idea of ‘a place to keep secrets’. By doing this, our pavilion had to be engaging and interesting for visitors of the island. The final compositionexplored these previous elements and created an architectural space to be used on the island as followed by the requirements.
SECRETS...
Secrets are something which should be designed to make us laugh and wonder. Exploring those places that no-one else has seen, finding the treasure and keeping it for yourself, or simply and trying never to tell... I tried to explore my architecture through these ideas. Creating spaces which could be fun, confusing, and explorable all at the same time.

It was necesary to consider many factors of the site before designing the pavilion. This included the location of Herring Island and its function, the pre-existing infrastructure on the island, the sort of terrain and vegetation, as well as the sun and wind paths of the island.

This helped me to decide for my site as it is on a high point with a good view of the city, however also with the ability to be hidden away and not overly obtrusive to the island. Being surrounded by large Australian native trees meant I wanted to find a way not to disturb them too much and give them freedom on the land. The sun would also allow for certain parts of the site to be ‘lit up’ at different times. This creates a different atmosphere during the morning than in the evening. My site also does not stray too far from the track, it is easily seen and accessed without having to cut off any of the existing path.
CONCEPTACLE & PRECEDENTS
My conceptacle played on the idea of balance and tension between the above and below ground plains. The push and pull from the centre plain allows for there to be above and below ground sections. Whilst almost mirroring each other, each side has its own space which can be explored without the other even being known. It creates a way for the elements to interract without ever having to be seen by each other.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
The process was long and arduous. These sketches highlight some of my thought process throughout, as I would sketch when something came from my head. It involved from the concepticle and the tension between planes, to forming a more geometric and ‘pullies and leavers’ sort of system. Much of the process was helped through by making the physical model as well, and exploring the ideas through the 3D form.

I was happy with how my final drawings came out. I think they incorporated all three concepts of the semester. Point, Line and Plane was visible throughout the pavilion. The large, wooden poles were a sort of frame, and furthermore the planes combined to create that frame, with either a glass infill or a human one. The Mass of the Earth has been used as the entrance to the pavilion, and also where the necessary store and bathrooms have been used. It is a space which is not too much in the human eye as they are not always desired to be seen, and further that underground space has been used to explore. I believe my pavilion has also worked with my idea of secrets. With stops and starts, bridges and stairs, places to climb and explore, the pavilion has been designed to explore and have fun. The above and below ground elements give it further secrets within the architecture, and the hidden entrance underground makes it more eventful for the individual.
FINAL MODEL
REFLECTION
The ‘Secrets’ Pavilion posed a real challenge to me throughout the semester. Managing to find a way to combine all of the different ideas proved to be the most difficult part I believe. However, I am content with my final product. It took me many attempts to find a design I was happy with and that I believed reflected my ideas. The processes have taught me much about design. Finding a way to use many architectural elements in a singular form can be quite daunting, and one must be willing to experiment. I am happy with my progress throughout the semester and can see how I have developed my skills. Although some are still not perfect, I believe I have come a long way since the start of the year, and look forward to improving more. Connor Byrnes
