Good Media India Arie’s exclusive interview was one of the best articles I’ve read in a long time. The insight she has given relevant to her career and her life was astonishing and heart-felt. I know her inspiring story will continue to inspire many young women. Keep practicing good media and putting out such amazing work.

Positive Content I have b e e n a f o l l o w e r o f Consciousness for some time now and am still in awe of some of the guys you have featured in your past editions such as Booker T Huffman of the WWE, Isiah Thomas, Blair Underwood, the late Maya Angelou and so on. I amend you all for being role models and for not following the trends in such a competitive industry, and also for sticking with positivity.

Promoting Inspiration The interview with legendary actor and activist Ed Asner was very touching. The interviews with Antonio Fargas, Seattle Sutton and the cast of the web series Bitter Party of Five were so inspiring to me as well. As a film director, I love the way you all talk about how they pursued their goals when a major network turned them down.

Empowering Others When I heard India Arie was featured in this issue, I knew I had to get my copy and subscribe. I love how her interview was based on mostly her life instead of the glamour of her career. In the interview, she empowers, she educates, and she explores her inner-strength and spirituality. I love her more as a fan than ever since reading her story.

As a nurse I knew that I had come up with a very good idea while helping my husband in his family practice office. I realized a lot of people don’t want to be in the kitchen cooking, and I decided that I could really help them with their menu plans by doing it for them,” she sincerely says. Mrs. Sutton stresses the importance of a well-balanced diet. “You should eat a balanced diet that include fresh fruit and salads… actually it’s my diet plan. That’s what we serve.” She continues to express the significance of noble well-being. “Good health is the greatest asset that people have in their life! I know sometimes people think it’s their new car or new home, but it’s not! People need to take control of their life and their health,” eagerly explains Mrs. Sutton. Someone You Should Know

Interviewed and written by Aaron Robinson - Editor

W

hen 18 year old film producer Zuher Khan taught himself about the film industry, the sky was the limit. Khan would later create a conspiring film that depicts the life of a young film student, titled “Three Holes, Two Brads & A Smoking Gun”. In the film, Khan plays John F. Kennedy Ariamehr a.k.a. Jack. Other actors include incredible performances by James Wilder Joaquim de Almida, Richard Edson and Rudolf Martin, just to name several.

Recently, Khan has collaborated with such incredible talent on the soundtrack for the film such as legendary film producer and rapper Ice Cube, Obie Trice and Grammy Award Winning Producer, Magnedo7. I was able to interview the humble and strong-minded film producer, Zuher Khan, about his new film, his collaborations, and his latest happenings in the entertainment industry. Zuher is a believer and is a prime example of having a vision and making it come true. Here is what the gifted actor and film producer had to share with the Consciousness Magazine readers. Aaron Robinson: You recently produced the film “Three Holes, Two Brads & A Smoking Gun.” What was your inspiration behind producing this amazing and wonderful film? Zuher Khan: My inspiration was when I watched this documentary on Sylvester Stallone “The Rocky Saga”. He said that when he was first starting his first film that he would be living in a room where he can close the window with one hand and close the door with his leg. And he was going through a struggle and through so much pain, and that’s when he wrote Rocky and it got picked up by a studio. Basically they wanted him to make the film but not him as the lead. He casted himself and he wrote himself as the lead actor. That made me feel like ‘why can’t I start my own film.’ That inspired me to write my own film.’

Consciousness Magazine 6

Aaron: You worked with such a talented and gifted cast. As a young actor and producer, was there anything that you learned from some of the veteran actors? Zuher: Oh absolutely! You learn a lot. You learn how to communicate with people. You learn how to act in front of a camera, because acting is reacting when you have such a great strong cast to react off of. I learned a lot from all of the actors that I was around. I learned a lot from some of the people that was a part of my film. They are the reason for my success today. Aaron: Where there any challenges in which you had to face along the way while putting together the film? Zuher: Yes, there were challenges. I’m sure there’re challenges for everyone, like getting the money together, getting interest, developing the script, developing the story, getting a director and finding distribution. I’m very happy that we got distribution and I’m very happy that everything is working out. At the beginning, I didn’t know a lot of people. I didn’t know a lot of things about the industry. Slowly and steadily I learned by reading books and going online watching interviews and documentaries on filmmakers. It was a struggle; it definitely was! At the end I had people working with me that pulled through. Aaron: How did you balance the two roles as actor and executive producer, such as working in front of the camera and working behind the camera? Zuher: Basically, when I was on the set I was making sure the food was coming out on time and everyone was on time for location. On locations we had permits; I was balancing it pretty well. I memorized all of my lines and I had a director to oversee the film on the whole shooting part. I overlooked all the production. It was a difficult task; it was not easy because it’s very hard to concentrate on how long we have a location for and my performance at the same time. My performance was more important to me, but also was getting the proper care for my production team. I balanced it fine because I’m a believer. Aaron: You also collaborated with Ice Cube, Obie Trice and Magnedo7 on several tracks for the film. What was it like working with them? Zuher: Ice Cube’s a legend! I think working with him has really taught me a lot. It really opened up my eyes just watching him work and just watching his work on

a whole different level. Obie Trice is also somewhat of a legend. He’s working with Dr. Dre and Eminem right now. And he also agreed to collaborate with me on the soundtrack of the film. I was very happy that all of these artists were coming together to work with me. I think it’s been a great experience thus far; Magnedo7 is a Grammy Award winner who produced Eminem’s “Recovery” album back in 2011. Working with such great names and working with such great talent makes one shine! I’m very excited to see what the future holds.

It’s really tough starting off, but you just never give up!

Aaron: What advice would you share with young actors and producers that are looking to be successful in the film industry? Zuher: Never give up; never say never! I was there when no one was helping me, I was there when no one believed in me and I was there when no one had faith in me. It’s really tough starting off, but you just never give up! Go with your heart, because your heart’s the greatest part of your body. Just keep striving and keep trying. Keep continuously striving vigorously. Never call it quits. If you enjoy acting, if you enjoy film-making, if you enjoy rapping, if you enjoy record producing then please do it, continue to do it. One day you will make a living out of it. Aaron: Can your viewers and fans expect any new projects from you in the future? Zuher: Yes, I’m planning to be collaborating with Magnedo7 again and Von who is a friend of mines. He has a recording session with Usher in two weeks and he’s also going to be collaborating with me on my next film. My next film will be filmed in Atlanta, Georgia. And it’s going to be a crime thriller. Aaron: Zuher, would you like to add anything in closing before we close the interview that we haven’t spoke about? Zuher: Everything’s shaping up, everything is working out and everything is balanced like the Libra scale. Follow Zuher Khan on twitter @ZuherKhan

Interviewed and written by Dr. Shanessa Fenner

I

can now check off interviewing Babyface on my bucket list for 2014. I had the ultimate experience and pleasure of interviewing the talented songwriter, singer, and producer about the release of the much anticipated album with Toni Braxton. Now if I can only get him to be my songwriting mentor. Shanessa Fenner: What should listeners expect from the album Love, Marriage & Divorce? Babyface: More than anything we just tried to put some music together that tells a story of relationships but to really feel good and I really

concentrated on people being happy and caring. I just love Toni’s voice so much. It’s just nice to hear an album with her voice. SF: What message will the album convey? What is your favorite song on the album and why? BF: The album we put together was a combination of our ideas of what we both went through which were love, marriage, divorce, and the emotions that you build. Toni was more on the divorce part and kept going down that road. Initially we were trying to do it almost like a play in the beginning being love, then marriage, and divorce and it felt like it was choreo-

graphed. Ultimately it became a collection of thoughts that dealt with the stuff that people go through. I don’t know that I have a favorite song on the album yet. I like the feel of the new album. It has a very good feeling to it. SF: Tell me about the tour and does the tour entail Fayetteville, NC? BF: We are talking about definitely going out this summer and do some touring together and we also do our own stuff as well. I like Fayetteville. I was there years ago when I was in the Deele and we played in Fayetteville and we loved it. SF: Have you ever thought about doing a project with the Deele again? BF: If L. A. Reid decided he wanted to do it then yes I would do it. SF: I have written two songs that are on albums and would like some tips on songwriting. What is the key to writing a hit song? Where does your inspiration come from when you are writing? BF: I don’t know if there is one answer for it. Ultimately it comes to having a great concept, a great melody, nice chords that go along with it, and something catchy. Sometimes it can be something simple and sometimes it can be complicated. It is hard to know for sure. So you get lucky if you get one. My inspiration comes from the people around me, watching TV, watching movies, and watching life happen. You always keep your eyes open about everything that happens. That’s where the inspiration comes from. SF: Do you ever experience songwriter’s block? BF: Sure and you just chill out and don’t worry about it and don’t do anything. Wait for a while and then come back to it. It will probably come back to you. SF: Which artists do you listen to? BF: I listen to everybody and everything on the radio new and old. I have favorites in every genre. I listen to classical, country, rock, pop, hip-hop, and all of it. I just love music.

something that I love to make a living with. I would like to be doing the same thing. SF: When did you first realize that you had a love for music and songwriting? BF: Probably when I was in sixth grade and about 11 years old. SF: What advice would you give someone who wants to be in the music industry? BF: The love of music is probably the most important part. You just have to have a real passion for it. No matter what happens you are doing it because you love music so you will still be happy with it. Sometimes things work out and sometimes they don’t. A good part of my career has worked out and I do it because that’s what I love. I think it is all about your passion. SF: What has been your greatest achievement in music? BF: Over the years being versatile enough to be able to write for different artists and because of that I did not have to depend on just myself as an artist or only write for myself. Being able to write for so many different artists kept me in the game. SF: If you were not a singer/songwriter/producer what would you be doing for a living? BF: I would have been a camp counselor. That is the only job that I have ever had. That is something that I love. I love working with kids, going camping, and being outdoors. SF: Future projects? BF: I’ve been working on a project with Barbra Streisand, Colbie Caillat, and getting ready to do some work with Aretha Franklin for an album she is going to do. Those are the main ones I am concentrating on. SF: Thanks for the interview! I wish you continued success. BF: Thank you.

SF: Do you listen to southern soul music? BF: No I have not listened to southern soul music but I would certainly listen to it. SF: What will you be doing ten years from now? BF: Hopefully the same thing. I like what I do. If I can do this until the end this is what I will do. Music is a big piece of my life. I have been blessed to be able to do Consciousness Magazine 9

Located in Greenville, South Carolina, the registered Financial Consultant and Insurance Professional have gained clients throughout the Southeast region. Douglas has also been involved in many community outreach programs, having the opportunity to empower individuals about regarding their finances. Here is what she shared with the readers in regards to savings, retirement and much more. Inspiration to Starting The Legacy Group I have been with the law firm for over ten years. And I saw a lot of people coming in where proper planning was not in place and it ended up costing them, their family and loved ones a lot of money. That inspired me to [want to] help people process information. I wanted to be on point and able to encourage individuals to make sure that they have their affairs in order and to do proper planning where they’re building and enhancing, as well as preserving their wealth. That’s how the legacy group was built. That’s how we are where we are today. Secret to Surviving in a Fluctuating Economy The economical environment that we were in for a number of years has been really a high service time for The Legacy Group. One of our motives is to secure investment planning. Once a person goes into the strict aspect of retirement, we position these individuals to secure retirement accounts so they can sleep at night. No matter what the market does, their funds are secured. They can protect their funds and watch them grow at the same time. Advice for Budgeting and Planning for the Holidays Use cash oppose to credit cards…shop alone. We have a tendency to shop with others sometimes, that may cause us to spend a little bit more than we really can afford. A lot of times we get caught up in tradition. What People Overlook While Securing Future Personal and Family Finances

[People tend to overlook] consistency. Realize this is a process, and not everything happens overnight. A lot of times we get frustrated in not seeing the results from the goals that we may have set. Of course, the first thing we need to do is make realistic goals. We can start with small goals and once you reach that goal then you can increase your goals. I wouldn’t set something high that will be difficult to reach. How Struggling Business Owners and Individuals Begin to Plan for Retirement I would encourage people to set up a retirement outside of their employer and continue to fund it monthly. They would need to set up a financial goal or retirement goal of what they would like to receive. It doesn’t depend on their age. I would encourage you to set up individuals retirement accounts because it could triple compound over the years and you will have a really nice nest egg outside of your retirement, especially the days we are in. People don’t stay on the job 30 years like years ago. Closing Message Set your own financial goals. Just remember, building, enhancing and preserving your wealth. And it doesn’t matter what age you are, whether you are a retiree or senior, it is never too late to start taking those steps.

Words-of-Encouragement

Inspirational Quote

By Antonio Fargas I think it’s important to, as soon as possible, realize that life is an opportunity to not defer your dream. If you have a dream you should give it every opportunity. You do the work and then you leave the results up to the spiritual side of things, because if you’re in this thing to become a star you may be disappointed because very few will reach that. Don’t give up your dream, but at the same time have a respect for the craft and do the work.

T

here are not very many rappers who have the ability to effectively pursue multiple entertainment endeavors. Ja Rule has proven the world wrong and has been unbelievably successful in his accomplishments and is widely recognized as a triple threat in the industry, being a prominent artist, actor and author. I was able to catch up with the remarkable megastar as he shares with me his recent happenings, mainly his role in “I’m In Love with A Church Girl” that was recently released on DVD and Blu-ray. Here is what Ja Rule had to share with the Consciousness Magazine readers. Tocarra Eldridge: What does the word Consciousness mean to you? Ja Rule: I would have to say Consciousness means being aware of what you do and being aware of your surroundings. It can mean a lot of things, but that’s my definition of Consciousness. That’s what Consciousness means to me. Tocarra: What was it like playing the role of Miles Montego in “I’m In Love With A Church Girl”? Ja Rule: It was great! I had a great time playing Miles. It was a lot of fun for me. All in all, it was a great experience. Tocarra: Did you have any similarities to the character that you played? Ja Rule: Miles and I have a lot of similarities. There are a

lot of parallels between the character and myself. When I shot the movie, certain scenes brought out certain emotions in me. I had to go to dark places to bring out some of those emotions. Tocarra: What made this film different from any other roles that you have played? Ja Rule: I think this is the reality of it. I’ve never played an actual character before – a true story where the movie is actually about somebody’s life. I think that’s what made it different. And actually having Galley (Producer of “I’m In Love With A Church Girl”) on the set with me, to be able to ask Galley what was he feeling like when he went through certain things or how did a particular situation play out for him. Taking what he gave me and gathering that information, as well as combining it with my thoughts, just made what was portrayed on the screen different. Tocarra: Did it take you to have to be a man of faith and a believer in God in order for you to play this role? Ja Rule: Yes, somewhat. You can’t be an atheist and play this role. I think you have to have some type of faith and some type of beliefs. I’m a really spiritual person. I believe in God, so it wasn’t a stretch for me to get into that character or get into the belief that a woman can change your thinking and bring you to the light of God.

Consciousness Magazine 12

Tocarra: Playing the role of a street guy, who transcended into a positive guy, what positive messages do you think those individuals will receive who may have many distractions and are battling the street challenges, but would like to change and become an upright individual? Ja Rule: Well, according to my Twitter feed there are a lot of people that were actually touched by this movie. You never know the power of the material that you put out there until you get the feedback. I get it [positive feedback] a lot from my music. People will say to me ‘you know Ja, I was going through some rough or tough times in my life and I listened to this record or album and it got me through’, or ‘this album was the soundtrack to my high school years.’ On the film side this was the first time that I’ve ever done a film and actually had people to say to me ‘that movie inspired me or that movie changed my life and helped me through this or that.’ So, it was a testimony. I’m very proud of that and I want to do more films like that – where people can actually come to me and say that the role I played helped change there thinking or changed their life. Tocarra: When it comes to our youth, what is your take on the influence of the mainstream hip hop music of today? Ja Rule: (Laughs) That’s a great question! I love music. I love the art form. Do I like everything out there? No! I don’t think there’s ever going to be a time when I like everything out there. I didn’t like everything in the 80s or the 90s, so I’m not going to like everything in the 2000s. There are a lot of great artist out there that are carrying the torch and making good music. I’m just happy to see the next generation making music and having fun with what they enjoy. I’m getting a little older so some of the stuff may be a little too young for me right now, but I understand it because I’m a hip hop head. My kids listen to hip hop. I listen to hip hop. For me hip hop is something that just keeps growing. I think that’s a beautiful thing in regards to where hip hop is going. I’d be lying if I said I like everything that’s out there, but I’m not mad at it; I understand it. I think there were a lot of things that I was putting out early in my career that maybe my parents didn’t understand or like. I had to explain to people that this is a part of our culture and this is a part of what we’re going through. Sometimes women don’t take it that offensive when you call them a B****. Women call each other B*****’s nowadays. It’s like what we’re going through as a genre and as a generation is different than what you may have been going through at my age. Its generational gaps, but it’s all for the good.

Tocarra: As a successful artist, what changes have you seen take place since your beginning stages? Ja Rule: When I first came out, I remember recording on reels when we had to go in the studio and actually cut the tape after we finished recording. If we wanted to do it over, we had to do it over! There weren’t any punches. I remember recording in those times when it was wax and then going through the CD era when things started to be more digital where we could do punches. When I first started you had to get it down to one take. Tocarra: Can we expect any up and coming films or new albums from you in the future? Ja Rule: Absolutely! I have two new films that I’m about to start shooting in the spring and in the summer. I’m working on my new album, my new project right now. I have a new reality show coming real soon called Follow The Rules. We actually start shooting that in another two weeks. I’m producing some other TV shows that you’ll be seeing soon. I’m not in it, but you’ll just see my name on the producer credits (laughs). I’m just enjoying being creative right now, creating great content to put out to the public. Tocarra: Would you like to add anything else before we close in regards to “I’m In Love With A Church Girl” or any of your other endeavors? Ja Rule: “I’m In Love With A Church Girl” is on DVD this month so go check it out! Go cop it! Get it in your collection! It’s a real good and inspiring movie. And my new book is coming out soon too, it’s called Unruly: The Highs and Lows of Becoming a Man. So ya’ll can get that too and read about my wild and crazy world.

Explaining Global Warming & Other Complex Environmental Problems Do you have any tips for explaining global warming and other complex environmental problems to my kids? -- Peter Buckley, Pittsburgh, PA

Courtesy of EarthTalk

Environmental: EarthTalk

Kids today may be more eco-savvy than we were at their age, but complex topics like global warming may still mystify them. Luckily there are many resources available to help parents teach their kids how to understand the issues and become better stewards for the planet.

(What does climate change mean? What is the greenhouse effect? How do we know the climate is changing? What is happening in the oceans? and others) uses cartoon characters and brightly colored designs to help kids come to grips with the basics.

A great place to start is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) “A Student’s Guide to Global Climate Change” website. The site is divided into sections (Learn the Basics, See the Impacts, Think like a Scientist and Be Part of the Solution) so kids can get just the right amount of detail without feeling overwhelmed. One feature of the site is a virtual trip around the world to see the effects of climate change in different regions. An emissions calculator—with questions tailored to kids’ lifestyles—helps connect everyday actions (like running the water while brushing teeth) and climate change. And a FAQ page answers some of the most common questions about climate change in easy-to-read short paragraphs.

Perhaps even more engaging for those eight and older is Cool It!, a card game from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). The game, designed in collaboration with science educators, requires players to collect “solution” cards in the categories of energy, transportation and forests, while slowing opponents down by playing “problem” cards along the way. “The game enables teachers and parents to talk about global warming in a fun and hopeful way,” reports UCS. “Kids, meanwhile, will learn that all of us make choices that determine whether the world warms a little or a lot, and which of those choices reduce global warming emissions.” The game is available for purchase ($7.95) directly from the UCS website.

Another great online resource is NASA’s Climate Kids website, which engages kids with games, videos and craft activities and offers digestible info on what’s causing climate change and how kids can make a difference. A guided tour of the “Big Questions”

Younger kids curious about climate change can consult the Professor Sneeze website, which features online illustrated children’s stories that present global warming in a familiar context. The stories for five- to eight-year-olds follow a cartoon bunny on various warming related adventures. A few of

CM Corner w/Tocarra Eldridge

the story titles include “The Earth Has a Fever,” “Where Are the Igloos of Iglooville?” and “Tears on the Other Side of the World.” The site also features stories geared toward 8- to 10-year-olds and 10- to 12-year-olds. Of course, teachers can play a key role in making sure kids are well versed in the science of climate change. A recently launched initiative from the National Center for Science Education (NCSE)—long respected for its work in defending and supporting the teaching of evolution in the public schools—aims to help teachers do a better job of teaching climate change in the classroom. Eric and Maleka Beal of BetterChoices “Making one better choice at a time”

W

hen Eric and Maleka Beal packed up a couple computers and their two loving children to leave New Orleans for a hurricane evacuation they never realized that their life would change forever. While staying at a Houston hotel in Texas for a couple of days, they both would later watch the news, becoming surprisingly informed that they couldn’t come home due to their home and town being flooded by 8 feet of water. Unfortunately, they lost everything due to Hurricane Katrina. After 15 years of marriage and surviving Hurricane Katrina the couple has since started a healthy lifestyle company, BetterChoices, which is dedicated to teaching, motivating, & empowering people to change their lives by making one better choice at a time. “Actually to break it down in our own personal lives, it started in 2006 when I went to the doctor’s office. She checked my temperature; it was alright. My blood pressure was a little elevated. When it came time for me to get on the scale it was a problem. That blew my mind. So at that point I decided to make a change to live longer,” explains Eric. “The beautiful thing about BetterChoices is really when we tell our clients or when we’re working in the community that BetterChoices expands way beyond health. The goal in life is obvious; it’s to make one better choice at a time. We let our circumstances and all of these things come into our life and allow them to think they’re interfering with our decision ability. Truth is they don’t.,” explains Maleka. BetterChoices has 3 core principles and guiding philosophies: Tell the truth, know the options, and it’s a lifestyle. Eric and Maleka share some pointers of how an individual may overcome the notion

of fear in order to get over a task or obstacles. “We tell everybody it took will power. As long as we’re avoiding nutrition’s, we’re going to have the outcome we have. We got caught up on a few things: Taste, food and how much it cost,” explains Eric. “People think willpower is like a magic pill. It’s a constant choice. What are you afraid of? Ask the question am I ready to change? Until people make up their mind in what they want to do, they are not going to do it,” says Maleka.” Eric and Maleka have also released a cook book called Let’s Cook! BetterChoices Healthy Lifestyle Cookbook where they share 50 of their favorite recipes, including their New Orleans’ favorites such as red beans & rice, sweet potato pie and baked macaroni. They look forward to developing and pursuing more healthy events this summer. As successful business owners, they share valuable information with individuals looking to make their businesses successful. “It was for us to create a social media platform to make sure we can educate people and motivate people to make great choices, and it’s been amazing to see the amount of people we have been able to help and indirectly through our social media platform,” happily says Maleka. “Whatever you are deciding to do…is it going to be long term? You are embarking on a lifestyle. We were on a quest to change our life and our health, not only as a couple but as parents.” “The decisions are in you! Follow your dreams and dream and don’t give up no matter how hard it gets. Believe in yourself. Teach other people how to believe in you,” encouragingly states Eric. After losing everything to Hurricane Katrina, Eric and Maleka are not only winners but champions in their own rights. Although it was July of 2007 before they could move back home; nonetheless, they continue to make a positive impact on people’s lives. www.BetterChoices.co. “I

’m very excited to take on this responsibility and this role to be able to take all the intentions that I have and the spotlight that I have and shine it on the children that need to be illuminated, and highlighted and saved and helped,” says global pop superstar Katy Perry who spoke about her role as being appointed to UNICEF’s newest Goodwill Ambassador during a recent interview. The iconic figure has made it her prerogative to lend a voice to children and young people around the worlds as UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador in hopes that children and adolescence can have a better future. Some time ago, Katy Perry visited Madagascar, one of the poorest countries in the world with UNICEF, an origination that has a presence in 190 countries, focusing special efforts on reaching the most vulnerable including children affected by violence, abuse, as well as neglected and living in severe poverty. She speaks about her initiative with the organization, which also promotes the rights and well-being of every child. “UNICEF was special to me because I took a trip with them. Whatever I decide to do whether it’s to be a part of an organization or a brand it’s because I had an experience with them and that experience was me going to Madagascar and being on the field and seeing their work in real time,” expresses Perry. The iconic figure looks to come up with a solution for

those challenged, while listening to young people issues and concerns that are most important in their lives. “I saw all these children interacting with each other. There is so much love between them and their exchanges. There’s so much compassion between them and they don’t have anything. They don’t have any material possessions. They don’t have any social status. It’s an unconditional love. It’s a non-judgmental love. So I was just inspired by that kind of high level of love that they are trading over there,” happily says Perry. In the month of November, Perry showed her support for the UNICEF emergency support effort for those affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines by calling on her massive social media followers for their support as well. While being on a mission to improve children’s lives in the world, she ends with a special quote. “We have to look beyond our countries and help all of the other children because they deserve it too. And we need to raise a generation that has a different way of thinking were they can have empathy and compassion, and so that they can have that with their children.” Other significant individuals who has or continues to support UNICEF include David Beckham, Harry Belafonte, Orlando Bloom, Jackie Chan, Danny Glover, Angelique Kidjo, Liam Neeson, and Leo Messi, just to name several. “HELLO EVERYONE”!! “WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME”!!! TO

“WHAT ‘S ON YOUR CONSCIOUS?” “WHAT’S ON YOUR CONSCIOUS?” IS A NEW FEATURED COLUMN IN CONSCIOUSNESS MAGAZINE! By Wanda M Dunn - Email: wandamdunn@yahoo.com

M

y focus and goal, for this column is to give our “Conscious” magazine readers and subscribers an opportunity to express themselves honestly and openly. Whatever is on your Conscious, Mind, Thoughts, Concerns, Issues, Questions, or “What Ticks you Off”! We will also express our personal opinions and/or feelings about whatever is on our “Conscious”! I will be expressing my Conscious thoughts as well. I will also discuss a vast and variety of topics of concerns and interests. Our readers may comment on my topics or others. The Definition of “Conscious” is: (As Per: New College Edition/The American Heritage Dictionary Of The American English Language) Having an awareness of one’s own existence, sensations, and thoughts, and of one’s environment. Capable of complex response to environment. Not asleep, awake. Subjectively known “Conscious” remorse. Intentionally conceived or done, deliberate: Rare. Aware of wrong doing. That component of waking awareness perceptible by an individual at any given instant; “Consciousness”, knowing with others, participating in knowledge, aware of. The concerns that are on my “Conscious” are: 1. Why is it that some people find it so difficult to say “Thank You “? 2. Why is it that some people cannot or will not “Acknowledge and Give Credit to others For Their Work”? 3. Why do some people, feel the need to “Brag”? Now that I have expressed What’s On My “Conscious”, let me Wanda M. Dunn Biography Wanda M. Dunn is a native and resident of New Orleans, LA. Dunn received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education from Southern University in Baton Rouge, majoring in Speech Pathology and Audiology with a minor in Speech and Theatre. Dunn is the first African American Woman hired by MCA Records when they established an African American Division of Recording Artist in 1979. She has also worked as a Record Promoter for many major and independent music/record companies.

get started on my feelings and opinions from my list.

1. I, for the life of me cannot wrap my mind around the fact

that there are some people who have a problem or find it difficult to say “Thank You”! It absolutely makes no sense to me. It’s a no brainer; it’s to simplicity! Let’s learn to make sure that “Thank You” is a part of our vocabulary at all times!

2. I really take issue with people who refuse to acknowledge

and give credit to others for their work. I think this is so very wrong on so many levels. I don’t get what the big deal is. Everyone deserves credit for the work or for what they have done. This is one of the issues that is a problem in this country. We all need this; it’s human nature. Why would you begrudge someone regarding the same thing that you yourself desire just as much? We have to stop this behavior and start being happy for others and make sure that we do the right thing.

3. Ok, here we go with “Why People Brag”. Well, I don’t feel

as though all “Bragging”, is “Bragging” - for the simple reason that there are people who are telling the truth about what they are discussing, however, their discussion may seem to come off as bragging to those that perceive it as such. Though, on the flip side, there are those who do in fact “Brag” and go on and on with it. Most of the time you are able to determine whether their discussion is real or not. Some people may feel insecure and think this is what they need to do to feel accepted, important, experienced or to compete with others. Then, unfortunately, there are those who are going to be who they are and will continue being in denial. They are who they are! We should all realize that we all are special and unique and “God Loves Us All”! We just have to “Learn to Love Ourselves” as well. Thanks Everyone and Let Us Hear From YOU!!! Dunn has served as the Louisiana World Exposition Co-Chairperson, the Publicity Chairperson and Board Member for the Women’s Pavilion for The World’s Fair, the Women’s Pavilion Governor’s Board of Director’s and as the Co-Chairperson for Louisiana Women in the Mainstream and Publicity Chairperson. Regarding volunteering, Dunn has worked both of President Barack Obama’s campaigns and has also served on Neighborhood Team Leader as the Director of East Baton Rouge Parish Voter’s Education and Registration, which she registered over 1,000 new voters. eleasing over eight best-selling albums with the group Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers, reggae iconic figure Ziggy Marley is back with another solo album, setting the bar in a genre that is greatly embraced across the world. The 5 time Grammy and Emmy winner looks to spread more love with his fifth studio album “Fly Rasta” via Tuff Gong Worldwide, sharing immense love, knowledge and wisdom with his fans and listeners. “Fly Rasta” features The Melody Makers including Cedella Marley, Sharon Marley and Rica Newell, with production from the songwriter himself as well as Dave Cooley (J Dilla, Silversun Pickups). The album is undeniably a must have as each and every song empowers and enlightens the listener. Ziggy’s past solo albums include Dragonfly, Love is My Religion, Family Time, and Wild And Free. As an entrepreneur, Ziggy Marley also has a GMO-free product line called Ziggy Marley Organics that he started in 2012. The products are available in over 1000 stores nationwide. As a publisher and author, the songwriter is also releasing a multicultural children’s picture book “I Love You Too,” which is a co-production of Akashic Books and Tuff Gong Worldwide. The book coincides with the album “Fly Rasta.” I was a pleasure speak with the iconic musician and humanitarian before he set out on his worldwide tour. Here is what Ziggy Marley had to say about his new project, inspiration and motivation, his calling, love and passion for music and people, and also his initiative of giving back to the youth. Aaron Robinson: Hey Ziggy, how is everything going? Ziggy Marley: I’m good, I’m good! Aaron: I want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to pursue this interview. Ziggy: No problem, no problem! Aaron: What does the word consciousness mean to you? Ziggy: Consciousness means to have awareness or an open-mind of knowing wisdom…that’s conscious. The openness that allows us to use the mind. Aaron: “Fly Rasta is your fifth studio album. What

makes this project different from any other album you have ever recorded? Ziggy: Well, I think what makes it different this time, [is that] there is no reinterpretation of anything that I’ve done before. There’s no way we kept it as the same thing that I’ve done before. I just tried to think of music with the difference of what level a person appears on at times. As a person becomes more open-minded, the music will become open-minded. I’ve learned more since the last time. So whatever I do, I put in the music - more knowledge, more wisdom, more love…all these things. The great thing is the accomplishment of progress; never move backward. We’re consciously trying to move forward and make progress, you know. Aaron: Collectively, what was your inspiration to putting together this album? Ziggy: The inspiration was to make something forwarding and put something together that was in reggae that I had never done before. This was a dream; this will set the bar. Let’s do something that we’d never done in reggae before that will move music forward. [Sometimes] we can have some guidelines and not let our growth out. Hopefully, we keep growing with everybody on this journey. Aaron: Are there any songs on the album that you hold dear to your heart more than others? Ziggy: No! All of them are worthy, from the first one to the last one. I don’t want any of our Marl’s to make it a reality show someday. (Laugh) Aaron: Having such conscious and empowering music, during a time of your life what was it that was embedded or instilled in you that made you want to create such positive and inspiring music? Ziggy: The love of music that was given to me, an urge to learn more for my next time and wanting to create more. An urge to learn and to get a chance to get knowledge and wisdom. That’s the main thing that makes music what it is, humility. Don’t let ego tend to drive you. You’re the driver. Aaron: As an artist, many have compared you to the great legend, the late Bob Marley. What are your thoughts on that? Ziggy: Rightfully so, because I am his son, one of his sons, one of his children. We’re not trying to envy similarities, so they embrace it; they love it.

Consciousness Magazine 19

Aaron: Your parents have given you so much advice, what solid advice have they given you that have applied to your everyday life? Ziggy: Advising is by action, not by words! I think the greatest advice that my parents could have had - which is a state of our appearance with mother and father they work hard just to teach love and discipline, just to earn respect…humility and love. I encourage. Advising is not by words, it’s by action. Aaron: You have an organization called Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment, can you tell us a little about that initiative and some of your other community efforts. Ziggy: Well, U.R.G.E. is one of the charities, foundations that I have. We’re focusing on the schools for our children to advance to be a better scholar and to get a better education - not just any education, but the right education too. Part of the solution for children is to get an education, so that’s basically what we are able to do - focus on the children. Aaron: In a world that seems to be destructive and unsafe at times, for our young people who seem as if they don’t have any hope or way out, what words of encouragement would you share with them in hopes that they overcome those negative aspects? Ziggy: I’d say, it’s not the end of life. You have to find it in yourself to overcome the obstacles. You have to find it in yourself to get through those things. You have to find it in yourself to love. It takes love. You have to love, but usually even the negative things make things better. Well, you can do something. You just have to keep pushing. Aaron: You formed the record label Tuff Gong Worldwide; you also publish books and distribute organic products as well, now you’re about to do a big tour. What other initiatives can your fans expect from you in the future? Ziggy: My initiative is to…you can do love, you know. That’s the story, the initiate. Everything else is like a side show to the ultimate is revealed….love. That is the initiative.

accomplish in your lifetime that you haven’t already? Ziggy: The accomplishment is to be a better person, a better human being and to give more love. There is more journeying to grow. The accomplishment is to give more love. There is more love to accomplish.

My music has a message and the music is there to encourage people to grow up amongst you.

Aaron: Ziggy, you seem to carry out the deities of the Most High, what do you believe is your ultimate purpose, mission or calling on earth? Ziggy: My purpose is to love, that’s it. Love is the answer to almost a lot of the questions. I think it’s better to offer love. There is so much of everything in it but without love in it there’s nothing. Love covers everything. That is the only thing we all need. So that is my calling, love. Aaron: When it’s all said and done what would you like for your fans to remember you by or take from your music? Ziggy: Guys, this is not about me. Remember to love one another! That is all that we are determined by. My music has a message and the music is there to encourage people to grow up amongst you. It’s conscious; it’s conscious and awareness. The music can heal people in time of trouble and disparity to inspire them. Aaron: Would you like to share any words of encouragement to the readers, your listeners and fans? Ziggy: The purpose of the agenda is, do what we have to do to make things better. My music always has a message. The message is in the music. That’s where the message is, in the music. Aaron: Ziggy, I thank you for your time. Ziggy: Thank you. Thank you very much!

“I

f I can believe in myself to a point that pushes me and motivates me to overcome my issues, then I should do everything I can to try to push and motivate others so that they can overcome the issues they’re having in their life,” sincerely articulates Ugo Lord, Life Coach/ Motivational Speaker/TV Host of The Ugo Lord Show. Ugo’s phenomenal online show undertakes the initiative to uplift and inspire thousands of young adults across the world, continuously reminding individuals to always believe in themselves, as well as the importance of living a better and more productive life. As an undergrad in law school, Ugo Lord has always had a passion for television production. He was involved with a show titled Standing Out, as a TV host, which provided adults with a political voice. After some time, his mentor would influence him to grab a camera and start his own show which is on the lines of motivating others, inspiring them to believe in themselves unapologetically. “I said you know what, it doesn’t hurt. Why don’t I grab a camera and try. Even though

it’s a small production, it’s still a production that I’m proud of - because of the message and the massive amount of people that it impacts. Young adults are my world, high school and college students are my entire world, as well as the individuals who follow us on Twitter and those who email me every single day,” excitedly says Ugo with high spirits concerning a show that he produces pro-bono. His goal is to turn The Ugo Lord Show into a larger show and then into a movement that will continue to help young adults across the world. “For me, it’s not about the money! I’m doing it for the purpose of the message - believing in yourself and having the confidence to follow your dreams.” Being in the skin of Ugo Lord wasn’t always an easy task as he sought out on his life journey. Having serious self-esteem issues in high school, not wanting to attend school due to students teasing him about the way he talked, and being deserted by his prom date were all very challenging obstacles for Ugo to overcome. Eventually, he would find a way to conquer his self-esteem

issues after experiencing an abundance of mental abuse. “I had to change schools. I had an older brother and an older cousin on the basketball team; they were popular and as a result the whole school knew me. I was different. I was this black kid from Ohio who talked funny, had an accent, and who everyone thought was gay, etcetera, etcetera. It was extraordinarily difficult for me. I didn’t have friends. If it wasn’t for my family, I would not have made it.” While dealing with self-esteem issues, Ugo would make himself a promise to believe in himself by creating a formula to success. Nonetheless, it was a challenge to believe. Moreover, day by day, he would start to believe it, live it, and dream it. “It’s so interesting regarding how much control we have over how we feel. It’s so easy to think other people can control how we feel. It wasn’t until I completely changed my mindset and said I believe in myself.” Ugo continues. “As I went through my junior and senior year of high school, by time I graduated, I was already a sophomore in college. I was like ‘wow, this is possible; this is a pinnacle’ and it happened! My life completely changed. In fact, I used to constantly motivate myself to go to school, become an attorney, and create a business. It led me to where I am today,” happily expresses the 23 year old.

“I always tell the young adults at the various schools that I visit, ‘regardless of what is happening in your life - not concerning those things that you are not in control of, like family issues, your parents getting a divorce, etcetera, etcetera - you can only be affected by something in your life if you allow yourself to be affected by it. Express, realize and understand that you are in complete and total control of your happiness, and that you have the key to the ultimate power of success and happiness.’” Passionately, Ugo gives his vision regarding what he anticipates The Ugo Lord Show to accomplish several years from now. “The Ugo Lord Show is not about Ugo Lord, it’s about the viewers who watch it. Five years from now, I wish the viewers who are with me now will continue to watch, continue to grow with me, continue to connect with me, and continue to spread the message as we go down this journey. If people can believe in themselves enough to realize it works, then they will spread the message with someone else.” Tune-in to The Ugo Lord Show at www.youtube.com/ user/UgoLordShow/videos and http://ugolord.com. As an advocate for self-empowerment, when it comes to giving advice, the talented host regularly covers controversial topics such as peer-presser, drug abuse and alcohol abuse. “So many people in high school today are really afraid to say no; they don’t want to be looked at as the individual who is not ‘quote unquote’ cool. When you are young your main goal is fitting in. The reason why I like to cover drug abuse, alcohol abuse and peer-pressure is to make people aware of a very simple way that’ll prevent them from being stuck in a position where they may later have serious regrets. Instead of saying no, which I know is difficult, you can always blame it on someone else.” Ugo gives several great examples, “someone says ‘Ugo can you try these drugs with me?’ And I say ‘no, because I am tested for drugs at school or I can’t because if my brother finds out he would kill me. Or, I can’t because my parents are very strict and they are always checking my belongings,’” wisely and knowledgeably says Ugo, encouraging individuals who encounter these uncomfortable situations, in hopes that they do not go down the wrong path. O

nce as a Neuroscientist and now one of the industry’s most profound film producers and writers of our time, Ari Handel has achieved many accomplishments to be proud of. Handel has been responsible for producing films such as “The Wrestler”, “Black Swan”, and “The Fountain”, as well as co-writing and producing “Noah”, one of the biggest movies of this year with producer, film director, and screenwriter Darren Aronofsky. The movie “Noah” is based off the biblical story of the man Noah who was chosen to pursue and undertake a great mission by the creator to rescue mankind and species from an apocalyptic flood that cleansed away the wicked from the earth. This epic story is also of courage, sacrifice and hope, having to be known as a deeply moving and profoundly spiritual story of meaning. “Noah” was recently released on the date of March 28 by Paramount Pictures and Regency Enterprises, starring some of the biggest stars in the entertainment industry, such as, Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, and Anthony Hopkins, just to name a few. I was granted the opportunity to speak with Ari Handel regarding his involvement with the film “Noah”. Handel was sincere, direct and open; nonetheless, engaged, taking much interest in our conversation. Days prior, while teasers the interview was posted throughout the Consciousness Magazine social networks regarding the publication anticipating of interviewing Handel, there were many readers who had questions when it came to the making of the film “Noah” and much more. Here is what Mr. Ari Handel had to share with the readers during our brief conversation.

Aaron Robinson: Hi Mr. Ari Handel. I just want to thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to pursue the interview. Ari Handel: No Worries, thank you for wanting to talk. Aaron: What was your goal or intent regarding making this film? Ari: We thought that Noah, the story Genesis, was an amazing powerful dramatic story. We wanted to try bringing that to the screen and use all of the tools and modern storytelling, modern biblical facts and film making techniques, and great casting and acting to make that story come to life and to let people engage with it; It’s 21st century. All people, whether they are religious, non-religious, young or old, can look at the story fresh and grapple with the ideas there and be entertained by it. Aaron: What is your take upon the criticism of this film, due to it not being close to bible terms? Ari: A lot of people I think had criticism of it, often seeing the film, a lot of that went away when people just started to see it. A lot of people who possessed early criticism felt that we weren’t being respectful to the bible and I think that everyone that sees the film will recognize that we took the Noah story very seriously. We cared a lot about what we were doing. We grounded everything we did in Genesis and biblical scholarship and most certainly changed things. Well that is, we most certainly changed people’s expectations. They

All people, whether they are religious, non-religious, young or old, can look at the story fresh and grapple with the ideas there and be entertained by it. are going to see things that are not what they think they are going to see. They are going to see an ark that doesn’t look anything like an ark that they expected. And things are going to happen that aren’t exclusively stated in the text. So, all of those are things that are grounded either in the bible or in biblical commentary, or in the themes and questions that the bible contain. Aaron: How much research was done regarding filming this film and how did you go by researching the facts other then getting information from the bible? Ari: I have a bibliography that I put together, just as the things I read in book form. That doesn’t include articles or doesn’t include anything I’ve done online, which is a bulk of what I did, lines of single space bibliographies that run over 4 pages long. We read a tremendous amount of biblical scholarships, talked to a lot of people who have explained this professionally all their lives, and basically did everything we could to grabble with the text and history of its interpretation as possible, to try and get it together. Aaron: Do you think you got your message across in the film? Ari: I hope so! See look, it comes down to rather people enjoy the film and are moved by the film, and feel like they come out of there [the movie theater] and talk about it and debate it. If we did that or any of them things then we accomplished that, but that is going to depend on each and every person who goes to see it and how they feel coming out.

family actors was there and there was this mountain in the background. And standing on the ridge where we were standing with a camera, we looked out and there were these rain clouds. We couldn’t shoot that because it had to be right to shoot that scene, because it was after the flood was over. And one of the local guys said ‘in five minutes that the sun would come out’. And sure enough, five minutes later the clouds just blew off, an enormous rainbow stretched from one side of the mountains to the other were with the ark literally standing right in between and the rainbow flamed every member of the cast and the entire set was flamed by that rainbow which was just laid there upon our set exactly where a rainbow would be in the story. That was pretty amazing! Aaron: Do you think there is going to be a new niche or new genre when it comes to religion or Christian films? Ari: Sure! I think that the bible is filled with tremendous stories, but I think they’re actually not just Christian. I think there are Jewish stories, Christian stories and Muslim stories, but there are also stories for non-believers too. There’s powerful stories for all people and I think that the fact that they have not been used in making popular films the last fifty or so years very much, that’s the anomaly. People will always go back to these stories to tell them and grabble with them because they are extremely universal moving stories, so yes, I would imagine that. Aaron: Thank you so much Mr. Handel for the interview! Ari: Thank you Aaron!

Aaron: When upon the set of the film did you encounter any spiritual encounters related to Noah? Ari: When you make a movie this size there are so many people involved that who knows what all the things that all those different people are experiencing, you know. I can’t speak for everyone. I can say there’s this one moment, where every single person on set incredibly moved. What happened was, we were filming the part of the film which is after the ark had come directly to the new world and the animals would come off and the family is there, and they’re building their kind of house and getting ready to live in the new world; they made it through the flood. The ark was there and it was going to be a digital ark that we had shot at that point, laid out where it was and the Consciousness Magazine 25

hen founding the R&B group “Uncaged Heat” in 1995 Leonard “Storm” Warren would quickly rise to fame as a vocalist. Over the years the Phoenix, Arizona home based group would produce several music videos and release three CD’s, touring across the country to fulfill a magical and exciting life as their dreams come true. I was able to catch up with Leonard “Storm” Warren, who is also an aspiring director. Here is what he had to share about his music journey and latest happenings. Aaron Robinson: You were the original founder of the R&B group Heat formerly known as “Uncaged Heat”, what was it like to be a part of this group? Storm: I had recently relocated from Illinois leaving behind a sizeable following from my previous vocal group called “Perfect Timing.” My experiences made me more of the mentor of this new group (“Uncaged Heat”). We quickly went from doing weddings to guest appearances at talent shows, news stations, print interviews, and then opening for several large venues for celebrities. Once we were introduced to Sean Jordan he began producing music for us, financing trips and sending us to other states to showcase. In a short time we covered a lot of musical ground and created quite a large library of songs. This union was more like family than business. This powerful combination lasted more than ten years. Aaron: What year did you officially leave the group? Storm: In 1999 Jeremy left the group, so we dropped the Uncaged from our title and became simply “Heat.” We picked up and let go of several new members during our time of reconstruction. For the next twelve years we were in the studio and strategizing. We became quite famous, but not wealthy. In the year 2011, I made one of the toughest decisions of my life, I decided to explore outside of the comfort zone that I’d built around me for so many years. I never left “Heat”, per se; I just needed to be able to make quick decisions without having to ask a committee if it’s okay to do it.

Aaron: You started off singing with the group Perfect Timing. Being a part of the music industry for over 20 years, what do you believe is lacking from R&B groups of today as oppose to when you began your career? Storm: I believe that the music and the artist from the 80’s and before had a different perspective and a different level of life experiences. For example, the way they dealt with situations, or even more simply, the way the music made them feel and translated those thoughts to their listeners. Aaron: You’re also an aspiring film director. Would you like to tell us a little about that initiative? Storm: I have plenty of projects that were written and directed by me. I have so many stories in my mind, so many things that I want to visually present to others. I get a feeling of happiness when people see my artistry and respond. It’s fantastic! Aaron: Are there any up-and-coming projects that you have been working on or any recent endeavors that you have been involved with? Storm: I just directed a music video for a friend of mine…good artist. His name is Grant Singleton. This video “ARGUE” can be seen on my youtube page www.youtube.com/bringdastorm along with a lot of my other works. (“Heat”/ “Uncaged Heat” videos are there too). I am also working on a Maxi CD - mostly about real situations that we deal with everyday. The only party song on the CD will be a dance anthem. My intention is to produce a music video for each song on the CD. This will allow me to showcase my abilities on a more broad scale. The title of the CD is called “Motion Pictures.” Aaron: What advice would you share with individuals who are looking to make a living from the entertainment industry? Storm: Learn and study the business, because believe it or not in this day in time it’s 90% business and 10% talent. Also there are a lot of sharks in this industry. If you don’t come sharp you will be eaten alive, so contract EVERYTHING, have a way out of all predicaments. Be sure to have yourself PROTECTED and most of all, keep your CONSCIOUSNESS!!

Interviewed and written by Aaron Robinson - Editor

Recently, I was granted the opportunity to speak with Rapper, Songwriter, and TV Personality Consequence. Cons has worked with artist such as Kanye West, John Legend and one of the most influential hip hop groups of our time, A Tribe Called Quest, just to name a few. In 2007, Cons released the studio album Don’t Quit Your Day Job and a host of Mixtapes such as Take ‘Em To The Cleaners, Movies on Demand (volume I, II, III and IV) and Curb Certified (volume I and II). Here is what Cons shared with the readers regarding his latest projects “Bottle Girls” featuring Charisse Mills & Company of Greatness, as well as shares valuable information relevant to the music business. Aaron Robinson: Hey Consequence, how are you doing? Cons: Good! How you doing man? Aaron: You’ve recently released a new album titled Bottle Girls, what can your fans and listeners expect from this new project? Cons: Awww man, you know, it’s a fun record! It’s kind of like if you took a little of “Dreams” from the R&B chicks by Biggie and check out the girls posting pictures on my Instagram that are doing bottle service waitressing, then you have “Bottle Girls.” Aaron: You’re also on the remix to De La Soul’s “Vocabulary Spills”, what was it like to collaborate with the legendary hip hop group? Cons: It was dope! It was like a bucket list item of mines. I have known them since I was a kid, coming up, knowing them basically from being affiliated with the Native Tongues. It was great. I love that record. Aaron: Can your fans and listeners expect any new releases from your label Band Camp Records in the future, more artist collaborations and/or television projects? Cons: I’m actually putting together a group called the Company of Greatness. They’re going to be on a bunch of my records. So yes, definitely! In the Company of

Greatness are Brother Num, Jus Raro, Dave Doo-So, David Matin and myself. Aaron: What do you believe is your key to longevity to survive as a hip hop artist in such a competitive field? Cons: I’d say that hip hop is based on being fresh and being just creative as possible. And that’s what I’m just trying to bring to the forefront of the music. Aaron: Would you like to share any advice for aspiring or up-and-coming artist who are looking to be successful in the music industry? Cons: Yea, just be successful! [Laugh]I think that’s the best advice in this business. In this day and age, you have to be serious about making the profits to be successful. You know what I mean. You gotta run your artistry like a business. Aaron: Are you looking for any new artist? Cons: I’m always looking to work with new people. But right now, my projects are the focal point. But I’m definitely into collabin’. Definitely, I want to have new artist that I can really put my name behind and help push out. Aaron: Before we close the interview, would you like to add anything in closing? Cons: Yea, look out for the “Bottle Girls” video that will be coming soon. You can follow me on twitter @ ItsTheCons and the Instagram, instagram.com/constv. Just look out for mew music. We have a new Mixtape coming and a new LP coming this summer. Shout out to all the girls who were my inspiration for “Bottle Girls,” Bernice, Graciii3, Lynda Rose, Nikkita Maxx, Jensen Nafolia, Kathy Red, Crystal Renee, Nisey Kamai, Miracle Watts, Kyra, Mia Body, Jazzie Belle, Yolie Monroe, Destiny Moore and Blu Gem. Aaron: Thanks Consequence, this interview means a lot to me. Thank you so much. Cons: You’re welcome man! Thank you!

Dr. Shanessa Fenner: Hello Iyanla, I would first like to say congratulations for the nomination of an NAACP image award for your show Iyanla: Fix My Life. I am so proud of you. Dr Iyanla Vanzant: I am just so grateful that it is an indication that people will watch conscious television. I think so much television, particularly reality television, promotes the lowest common denominator. We really make an eff ort to provide people with information, inspiration, and healing. What this nomination says is that it is being noticed. I’m really, really grateful about that. SF: Your book, Forgiveness: 21 Days to Forgive Everyone for Everything, talks about forgiveness. What are the necessary steps to forgiveness? IV: You have to first acknowledge that you have a hurting, wound, upset, or breakdown. There is someone or something that you are still holding memory about or upset about. Acknowledgement is the first step towards healing. You Consciousness Magazine 28

have to acknowledge something is off so you can begin to fix it. SF: I am a fatherless daughter and what impact, if any, does that play in my relationships with men? IV: What I know is that a father demonstrates how to be a man to males and for females our daddy demonstrates how to be in loving relationships with men. Men think first from their head and need demonstration and we as women feel first. So very often whatever our relationship was with our daddy or that male parent in our life, we are going to repeat that pattern over and over and over until we get in touch with what the feelings are attached to daddy not being there. So myself for example, my father was in my life but he was emotionally and often physically unavailable. For most of my adult life I was in relationships with men who were emotionally unavailable, physically unavailable, long distance relationships, and relationships with men who always had other women. And it wasn’t until I cleared myself and really got in touch with what it felt

like to be abandoned, rejected, and left by my father that I was able to establish a healthy relationship. SF: Well how do I do that? IV: You have to first get in touch with the feelings associated with daddy not being there or the feelings associated with the male caregivers that you did have. If you know that daddy was not there or absent, you today as an adult woman may not have any particular emotional tie. What did it feel like when you were 5, 3, 7, or 12 years old? What did it feel like not having a daddy or seeing other girls with their daddy? Those are the feelings that you have to get in touch with. So very often we don’t even have a language for those feelings. We say, “Oh I am not mad, I am not angry.” But do you feel abandoned, rejected, unimportant, helpless, or hopeless? Those are the feelings from those early ages that you have got to get in touch with and those are the things you have to forgive. Until you do the forgiveness work the energy in your body is going to attract the same thing over and over. What forgiveness does is neutralizes that energy. First of all forgive yourself. I had to forgive myself for feeling unimportant and I had to forgive myself for telling myself what I wanted didn’t matter or that I could never have what I wanted. I had to forgive myself for believing that I would always be abandoned. That is a deep level of forgiveness and if you can’t do that then you start with forgiving daddy for leaving you and not making you feel important and not honoring his responsibility. SF: How is forgiveness the final form of love? IV: We are each born for giving love and for getting love. The more love we give, the more love we get. As you engage in the practice and process of forgiving it opens your heart and allows you to receive more love. When your heart or emotional self is locked into a pattern of mistrust, hurt, upset, abandonment, or rejection, you are not open for giving love or for getting love. So forgiveness is what you do for yourself to open yourself to a new experience and a new way of being. SF: I am a principal and very concerned about the plight of the African-American male. They come to school with barriers and other situations that keep their focus off of learning. Please give insight on the African-American male and what needs to happen in order to make sure they are a success and not a statistic. IV: I think one of the challenges that we face in this society today is having a higher expectation of our male children. We see young, black males in a single parent home and we immediately feel sorry, fear, or empathy for them as opposed to thinking higher of them and holding that in our hearts and correcting the bad behavior the moment we see it. I think we also have to listen to them and encourage them to speak about their needs, fears, wants, weaknesses, and strengths without advising them. Just let them talk and support them in putting together better thoughts and expectations about themselves. By the time a young male is five he has probably heard over a million messages of who he is not and what he can’t do. Those things make an impression on him. I remember when my grandsons were young. I used to call them doctor and tell them

they were going to be a doctor of something. I don’t care if it is education, medicine, dentistry, veterinarian, or whatever and I impressed that on them. They have not reached it yet, but I still particularly seem to call them that particularly when they are acting not so wonderful. I say, ”Doctor, what are you doing? Is that the way a doctor of education, medicine, or philosophy behaves?” Still today I say that to them. So we have got to keep inspiring them and forming them. Ultimately it comes down to this, as adults we have to stop having unplanned pregnancies with children that we are unprepared to parent. We have to stop it. SF: Black women have been the major focus of the “marriage crisis.” Why is it that there are many black woman who have never married ? IV: If I knew the reason I would bottle it and sell it. My experiences is that as women in general we are out of order. We live like men, we think like men, and we behave like men. What do I mean when I say like men: from our head and not our heart because so many of us have broken hearts from daddy being gone, from watching what mommy went through, and from not being affirmed in our beauty and our power as young girls. So we grow up with ideas about who we are without a real sense of who we are as women. We don’t have to be hard and aggressive in order to be safe and feminine. We are out of order because as women we should live in our heart first and not in our head. Far too many of us are living in our head trying to take care of our heart and it is not working. The other thing that I think is particularly for women of color and as an AfricanAmerican, Native American, and Cuban woman, that is what I am, we have gotten so far away from the power of our culture and the things that women do. I meet young women today who are 20-35 years old and they do not know how to cook. They can’t cook. They think of cooking as a duty and an obligation when it is really a medicine. It is the way that we nurture and medicine ourselves and our family. I meet young women today who do not have a basic spiritual practice. My grandmother couldn’t read but she meditated every day. She had quiet time and she would memorize scriptures that she heard in church. There were things that she did as a Native American woman in the home and for herself. We follow a template and a paradigm that was created by men and serves the needs of men that take us out of who we are as women so the reason why we are not married is because we are men. We want men to be either in competition with us even in the home or to be our girlfriends. We don’t know anymore how to take our place alongside the man because we have a worldly description of who men should be and who we are as women. We are out of order on so many levels such as mentally. I don’t mean intellectually because we are brilliant, creative, and powerful. SF: Thanks for your time. Have a great day!

R

ecently, when I interviewed Grammy Awardwinning producer Magnedo7, it was as if I’d reunited with a friend that I hadn’t spoke to in ages. In other words, he was down-to-earth, true to himself when it comes to his craft for producing and making records. Magnedo7 began his music journey at a young age, where he developed an interest for writing and producing. Later, he would take his gift and passion for music production to another level, forming Gospel and Hip Hop groups. His inspiration came from listening to legendary artists such as Prince and Quincy Jones, and from listening to various genres of music during his upbringing. “A lot of

my inspiration came from older guys. I definitely look up to the Pharrell’s, the Timberland’s and the Dr Dre’s of this newer generation,” says the brilliant producer who has also been successful for producing pop, rock, and R&B music. Over the course of Magnedo7’s career, he has been fortunate to work with artist such as Eminem, Havoc, Jim Jones, Bonecrusher, 50 Cent, Royce Da 5’9”, Twista, and Camp Lo, just to name several. Magndo7 has recently worked and collaborated with Zuher Khan, a young film producer on the soundtrack for his new film “Three Holes, Two Brads & A Smoking Gun.” The exceptional producer explains what it was like for him to work on the project. “[Working with Zuher] was really cool! He reached out to me when I was already in a creative state. The music that I already started to record was perfect; he was like ‘okay, wow!’ I love the guy’s drive! That’s the one thing I like to do with everybody before I look at any of their products and/or anything that somebody says about them - I have to like the person and I have to like their drive. And he got it,” excitedly says Magnedo7 who is also working on another future project with Khan called “Redemption.” Magnedo7 is definitely one of the hardest working men in the music industry. He currently works with the legendary rapper and film producer Ice Cube, where he’s produced numerous tracks for his recent album “Everything’s Corrupted”, and is also working on production for Cube’s up and coming NWA movie “Straight Outta Compton.” He speaks more about his Continue on page 26

Les Gold:

es Gold, Seth Gold, and Ashley Broad-Gold operate the largest pawn shop in Detroit. For the new season of “Hardcore Pawn”, the stars of the Tru TV’s Number One reality show are back with new exciting episodes for viewers and fans to watch. Les Gold is an experienced hard-nosed pawnbroker who built American Jewelry and Loan from the ground up. Having over 5 decades of experience in the pawn business, Gold has been

very instrumental to his community by providing over 50+ jobs in the Detroit, Michigan area. Whenever given the opportunity to represent for national media, Gold makes a way to serve as an unofficial ambassador for the city. As a successful business owner, Gold has partnered with the Chamber of Commerce and the Visitors and Conventions Bureau to promote businesses and tourism for the Detroit area. When it comes to supporting charities, the pawnbroker is in support of several, including THAW, which is an organization that focuses on low-income home energy issues. Gold has also partnered with the local arts organizations DSO. The organization will coordinate a concert of classical music at the Gold’s store later this month. I had the opportunity to speak with Les, one of the masterminds of the Gold’s family, who is behind American Jewelry and Loan. Gold shares valuable information regarding pawning items, as well as speaks about the new season of “Hardcore Pawn” and much more for the Consciousness Magazine readers. Here is what the successful business owner had to say. Aaron Robinson: Mr. Gold, I just want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to do this interview with me! Les Gold: Aaron, it’s my pleasure! Thank you for having me in your magazine. Aaron: No problem, thank you! What led you to want to go into the pawn business? Les: I made my first sale when I was at my grandfather’s pawnshop when I was 7 years old dealing with an adult. As a kid that was my work. I couldn’t get out of it if I tried. Negotiating was a great lesson that I learned at 7 years old. I continued to do it up until today; I’m 63 years old. Aaron: How long has the business been in the family? Les: My grandpa opened the pawnshop up in the 1940’s. I

Consciousness Magazine 32

opened up American Jewelry and left the family business in 1981. Aaron: What’s the craziest thing that you have seen at the shop or the craziest thing pawned? Les: Well it depends what you mean by crazy. Do you mean a prosthetic-eye that a guy pulled out of his eye socket or a World Series Championship ring that one of the star players took off of his finger and handed it to me? So in between those two things…those are pretty strange items! Aaron: That’s what you’ve seen a guy actually pull a championship ring off of his finger? Les: I had a World Championship ring in which we owned from a player of the 1968 Detroit Tigers World Series. Aaron: Oh wow! That’s amazing! What’s the most expensive pawn that you have ever done? Les: Well, I have taken in jewelry that has exceeded a quarter of a million dollars. We have given less than a quarter of a million dollars, but the value of the item has been far exceeding $250,000. Aaron: You have a son and daughter who work with you. Sometimes it’s difficult for family members to work together. How do you all keep a great relationship with one another? Les: [laugh] Well, we kiss every morning when we come to work and we kiss every night. One of the things that I made sure of is that when I brought my kids into the business that they realize that I’m still their father but I’m their boss from 9:30 until 6. They treat me like a boss during those hours and it’s a very challenging thing. And I’m really one of the fortunate fathers to be able to have both of them involved in the business. Aaron: Would you ever sell the business? Les: I don’t think Ashley and Seth would let me sell the business. It’s one of those things that we built as a family, and I would like to keep it in the family as long as I can. You know, I know I’m not going to be here forever and to pass it along to the next generation is something that I can really be grateful for. As long as they wouldn’t screw it up, I’m good with it! [Laugh] Aaron: Do you have any tips that you would like to share with customers before they bring an item or items to your pawnshop? Les: To any pawnshop in America, what people have to understand is that they have to leave their emotion at the door. If you came into any store to sell your item, if your emotions are involved in it, you’re going to ask too much for it. You have to do your homework; you have to know how much your item is worth. One of the things I talk about in my book is negotiating. Don’t be emotional, don’t have emotions selling or buying it, and don’t be afraid to walk away. That’s the bottom line to doing any negotiating. If somebody comes into a store, a pawnshop or any business, make sure you know the value of it. Aaron: And speaking of your book, for those who haven’t

picked it up or read it, what are some things that you think they can gain from your book in regards to other extra tips and so forth? Les: One of the things in the book is business wisdom from a pawnbroker. What I do is talk about my journey from my first sale at 7 years old ‘til the time that we got the show picked up, which was four years ago. One of the things I talk about in the book is negotiating. That’s really the most important thing you’re going to get out of it. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes in life are teaching tools. A failure is not. Once you fail it’s the end and that’s something that you don’t want to have. Really, the negotiating and the knowledge that you’re going to gain in business; those are the most important things. Aaron: What can your fans and viewers expect from the new series that is coming out? Les: The shows coming out starting this new mid-season premiere are probably the most exciting ones’ yet. You’re going to see America Jewelry and Loan have some real difficult financial problems, and you’re going to see the way we get out of it. It’s going to be the biggest deal I have ever been involved in. This could be a make it or break it life-changing event for the Gold’ family. You have to watch the show to see how it ends. Aaron: Would you like to add anything else that we haven’t discussed or talked about before we close the interview Mr. Gold? Les: Well, you know one of the things that has been important to me is, I just got back from being in Europe and it was amazing to know how many people watch us in Italy, how many people watch us in France and how many people watch us in Spain. I was walking down the streets of those countries, and I took notice of how many people stopped me to get my autograph because the show is very popular outside of the United States. The show is popular within the United States, but outside of the United States, it’s even bigger. So I’m very fortunate to be known as a TV personality and to be able to give the fans all around the world a little piece of America Jewelry and Loan, “Hardcore Pawn” and Les Gold. Aaron: Awesome! Awesome! I just want to thank you again for taking time out of your busy schedule to do this interview. It was a pleasure to speak with you Mr. Gold. Les: It was a please to speak with you too. For over a decade,

Alexander Martin, who is a known-well designer and inventor has invented several products that are sold worldwide. Alexander Martin is also a talented individual who operates Martin Christian Radio, as well as the Non Profit radio station Love Life Community Radio 107.9FM The People Station, located in Decatur Illinois. The radio station often gives assistance, helping inventors and providing them with valuable informational tips regards to inventing. Throughout the week a variety of programs are offered to the listeners for their listening pleasure while all gospel music is played on Sunday. With the extraordinary gifts and talents Mr. Martin possess, he took account of his blessings combining his ministry of God and his passion for helping people all into one, allowing him to give back to inventors, designers and artist. I recently interviewed Mr. Martin regarding his inventions, radio endeavors and most importantly his love and passion to help others.

Tell us a little about Alexander Martin? It started out when I was about 9 or 10 when I moved to Decatur, Illinois from Greenwood, Mississippi. When I was young I thought about being on the air, just playing around acting as if I was on the air. I eventually pushed it up a little further; I started out with inventing and then I got into radio. I help inventors. I love helping people. I’m operating two radio stations, Martin Christian Radio and Love Life Community Radio. What led you to want to go into radio? I was helping a guy out with music when I was out in the world. People were saying ‘hey, you should get your own radio station.’ I thought about it way before they said that. I said ‘why don’t I put a radio station online for inventors! Then it moved into that, and then gospel music. It was Martin Tips On Inventions Christian Radio. It also helps inventors. Then I thought more about it. I always wanted to be on FM. We did the license and God blessed us with 107.9FM. You also are an inventor. When did you receive the gift or passion to invent? It was like I was thinking of things.

Consciousness Magazine 34

I said ‘man you know what, I think I can be an inventor’. I came out with some inventions and I went to different shows such as the American Inventors and The Everyday Edison Show. I got a patent pending on it. Most of all, I’ve found a passion for helping people. I’ve helped a lady with this electric mover for moving patients over to the bed. I love inventing man. My ministry was radio. I just put it all together and just helped everyone all in one such as inventors, designers and artist. What are some of the products you’ve invented? Well, I first started out with the filter air-fresher that goes in your car; you can use it in any area in your car or in your house. I came out with a different spray bottle that you can use in three different ways. It’s just one bottle of whatever you desire to put in there to use it for. I also came out with a new designed baby bottle and so on. Those are the three that I’ve really been working hard on. As you mentioned earlier, you have helped many business owners with their businesses, as well as helped individuals with their products they’ve invented. What are some of the tools in which you provide for up and coming inventors? (First) thing is get everything lined up and get it down on paper. One thing is - mail it back to yourself so that you can have proof that it’s your product. And number (two) is making sure you get a patent pending. And keep it to yourself until you can get a patent pending and get the right manufacturing company that it may be. I tell a lot of inventors just keep the faith; this thing will work out. You just have to keep on with what you are doing. You just have to line it up and it will work out. For this question your comment was on the same lines, but what advice would you share with those individuals who are looking to get their product off the ground? Give me a call and I can lead you in the direction that you need to be led. You don’t have to tell me your whole full product, you can tell me that

you created something and I’ll tell you, ‘hey, this is what we do.’ Don’t tell me what it is. We’ll get all the paperwork done first and get it lined up with the patent and trademark office, do your patent pending and you got a year to get this thing out there and you can expose it once you get your patent pending to me or whoever, and you just keep moving forward. We don’t want scams, we don’t want any of that, because people worked so hard on their inventions and just don’t want to give this out to someone and all of a sudden see it in the store.

“”

I tell a lot of inventors just keep the faith; this thing will work out.

That’s valuable information. Would you like to add anything before we close the interview Mr. Martin? With 107.9FM, we look forward to the public support for our format which consists of a lot of programming with the youth, elderly, health care, etc. We are geared towards meeting the need of the community both natural and spiritual. Another important issue is that this is a donation supported station. We need the support of donations coming in to help us run and maintain just as other stations does. If there are people out there that want to be a blessing to this station, it is a worthy cause. This station is a vision. I’m trusting in God that it will be successful. recent endeavors. “A couple of things are going on with a guy from Grand Hustle, Young Booke. He’s a guy from Atlanta. That young guy has so much drive. I’m definitely working with my wife (Shameia LaCrawf) on a couple of things. We’re working on an album. I have a few records with Kevin Gates, signed to Atlantic Records. RL from Next, we have a whole lot of records together. Those are fresh projects that come to mind,” excitedly says Magnedo7 who diligently and persistently continues creating. The phenomenal producer speaks about one of the most interesting artists that he has worked with. “I’d say the most by far is definitely 50 Cent. I would say the first time I went in [the studio] on behalf of producing for an artist by the name of Hot Rod - 50, he already had like a 5 year plan for my career the first time I met him. It gave me insight of how he turned out to be ahead of the curve. If you try to act before the curve gets there it’s too late. If you act before hand and have the plan out, that’s when everything runs smoother. He had these 70’s songs and 60’s songs on memory recall. It did a lot for me as far as making sure I stay well-rounded. I don’t do random music and [I don’t] try to follow the trend; I don’t do that,” expresses Magnedo7.

overlook the natural gifts of our youth. To counteract that, he finds it in his heart of wanting to give back with his newly developing foundation We Want Fall Foundation. “It’s more so for the middle school and high school kids, where we help them in the area of arts, as far as starting to know how an internship works and teaching them [how to use] various types of software. You need internships before walking into anyone’s label because they’re not going to respect you. My wife and I both have degrees in music…like practical studies. We want to make sure that the kids are well-rounded and that they just don’t aim to be a producer, rapper or a singer.” Magnedo7 lists various music professions that the youth can pursue. “You have a publicist, you have managers, and you have A&R’s. You have so many other jobs to pick from,” informally articulates Magnedo7, as we end our conversation. To keep up with the latest happenings regarding Magnedo7 please visit https://twitter.com/Magnedo7 and http://www. youtube.com/user/magnedo7music/channels

The talented producer shares aspiring advice to producers and those individuals who are seeking to work in the music industry. “Make sure that you stay true to whatever the sound is you’re trying to introduce to the masses. When you start attracting the labels, labels try to make you one dimensional. Have a goal in mind.” Magnedo7 gives an example of a business analogy when it comes to the music industry. “For instance, a lot of producers will get in, especially now like the 16, 17, and 18 year old guys. The label throws them 30,000 or 40,000 dollars for a six song deal. Well, a six song deal is actually a 12 song deal because you’re only going to get 50 percent of a record; you’re not getting 100 percent. The main thing to do is to get educated on the business. Know who you’re working with. Know who you’re sending your music out to. You have to be relevant as far as the catchiness of your record. It always changes. Always be aware of what’s going on around you, but don’t transform to it.” Outside of producing, during our conversation, I can hear the urgency in Magnedo7’s voice in regards to wanting to share his gift of creativity with the youth, in hopes that they become successful and not neglect their passions, gifts and interests. Unfortunately, many teachers and adults Consciousness Magazine 36

Blessed to be a part of the classical team, here is what the 6’ 1”guard had to share with the readers during a recent interview with Consciousness Magazine.

Aaron: Speaking of bullying, what led you to get involved with Bullying Prevention? Scooter: The Globetrotters, the staff, the players and everybody…we kind of put our heads together and asked what’s going on in the world today? What are the big issues that a lot of kids in general are having? And it was people’s kids being bullied. You hear a lot of stories nowadays that kids are being bullied in school, and the person that is getting bullied is either hurting himself or hurting other people. We came up with a program its called the ABC’s Of Bullying Preventions. So we go to different schools and talk to kids about what to do if you are being bullied, and if you see someone being bullied. It’s a great program. We get the message across and we also add a little Globetrotter twist at the end and make sure that they have fun.

Aaron Robinson: What has your experience been like being on the Harlem Globetrotters roster? Scooter Christensen: Ah man, it’s been absolutely amazing! You know I’ve been playing ball since I was 5 years old and for it to come full circle for something I love to do, which is playing ball, I’m getting a chance to travel the world and make people smile. So, its no better feeling than that. Aaron: You hold the Guinness World Record for having the longest duration for spinning a basketball on your nose for 5.1 seconds. How did this talent come about? Scooter: In 2009 the globetrotters got invited to the NBA celebrity all star game and the Guinness World Records guy just happened to be there. One of our managers went up to him and asked if there has been a record for anybody that has spun the ball on one’s head or one’s nose and he said no. So, I actually set the record in 2009 for spinning the ball on my head for about 6 seconds and 5 seconds on my nose. They invited me back the second year in 2010 and I broke my record; I believe it may have been 8 seconds on my head, about 6 seconds on my nose. If they ever invite me to do it again I will be ready to break my own record. Aaron: In 2006, you performed oversees on the U.S. military bases. How was that experience for you as oppose to a regular show? Scooter: That was unbelievable, because of me having the opportunity to meet the men and women in Armed Forces. They were so happy seeing us because we brought a little home to them. They were like “you know, you guys are so good.” The big thing for them was like “where you from, where you from?” They felt like you were from their city. They felt like they knew you. We told them that they were the real heroes. What an unbelievable experience. That’s one of the things I’d never forget as being a Globetrotter. Aaron: What do you think is the most challenging things that you have had to overcome or achieve to become a professional basketball player? Scooter: Playing ball. I definitely had to overcome bullies and people telling me that I was too small and skinny to play basketball. I thank God I had a good parent that kept me positive, consoled me, and encouraged me to have a positive

Aaron: Nice! That’s amazing. As an athlete, do you have any advice for individuals that are seeking to be a professional athlete someday? Scooter: I always tell kids, find something that you are passionate about. One thing I always tell them is to get your education; that’s the number one thing. The second thing is always believe in your dreams. The third thing is to find something that you are passionate about, no matter what it is. My passion just happens to be basketball. It doesn’t have to be sports. You can be anything; it can be a doctor, lawyer, singer, actress, or whatever you want to do. And put a lot of effort into it and you get results; you get positive results. And last but not least, I tell kids to have a positive attitude. They don’t want to deal with people like that that. [Earlier] we were talking about the Globetrotters. I can come out there and do some of the best tricks that you seen in the world, but if my attitude is not good then you’re not like a Globetrotter. You have to be a people person, love kids and love to be around kids. Aaron: What’s next for Scooter Christensen? Scooter: I don’t know man. I’m still balling, my knees and my legs still feel good. [laugh] I grew up singing in the church home…my whole family was into church. My mom would just sing around the house. Either you played an instrument or you sing in the family. I picked up singing. I was in a gospel group with my cousins when I was little. Other than that, I’m not sure what’s next for me, but I know it would have to do with something entertainment wise. If I’m not entertaining on the court I will be entertaining my family back at home in Vegas. -Interviewed and written by Aaron Robinson - Editor

Q&A Q. When did you realize that you had the gift or calling to produce such amazing work? A. Growing up, I tried various forms of expression; however I was not good at acting, dance, or playing the violin. I doodled in notebooks at every chance and decided to focus on visual arts in high school. I soon realized that within visual arts, there’s no limit to the amount of media I can use to create. I fell in love with computer graphics, ceramics, painting and drawing classes. Music and performance still made its way into my work. I made videos documenting my process. It’s not really about producing amazing artwork; it’s about developing a skill. I’m not sure if my work is amazing, but I realized that it’s a safe enough world for bad ideas, and I enjoy being able to put them out there. Q. What was your inspiration to creating the Nelson Mandela Pieces? A. My artworks are something like public diary entries;

each installation reflects upon an evolving story of who we are as people. As a tribute to Mandela’s powerful spirit and enormous impact on the world, I wanted to reflect on where we are geopolitically – due in part to his leadership – and document how grateful I am to have witnessed a man like him in my lifetime. In the spirit of gratitude the drawings took on a celebratory and vibrant energy. Q. As an artist, what type of subject matter, themes or medium do you like to focus on the most? A. Themes present in my art range from: genealogical dementia, loss, character-encounters, desire, and the body. I try to use media that relates to the context of each piece, for example- a sculpture about an abandoned home might include plywood. Creating is my relentless effort to explore sources of anxiety, solve problems, share memories, as well as provide evidence for narratives that address social changes, environmental deprivation, and technological advances.

Q. What do you believe are some of your challenges when it comes to your artistry, and how do you overcome them? A. My biggest challenge is finding a home for my artworks and reaching people like my neighbors who would rather buy decorations from chain stores like Ikea and Walmart. I wonder why so many choose to purchase bowls of fake lemons and reproduced canvas prints. Is it a question of affordability? I can understand that of course, but I would urge people to seek out student work and that of emerging artists. These artists tend to have lower prices that may increase in worth over time; but that reproduced canvas print never will. Maybe people actually just want decoration more than they want art? Given that so many public schools are cutting their arts programs, it’s not hard to imagine that some people simply do not find the social value in art. Or, maybe it is more accurate to say that in a consumerist society, social value is not as highly prized as use value. Certainly, decoration is a lot less threatening than art. The ambiguities and confrontational nature of modern art has the potential to spark difficult conversations that perhaps some people are not ready to have. We all have thoughts we’d rather avoid sharing with our neighbors, but that’s the whole point of art, to start a dialog and advance culture. I’m curious as to what will drive consumers to make more considerate and daring choices moving forward. Right now, one solution I’ve found is to invest my time in public art projects, like murals, that

involve the community in the production. If nothing else, they might become (if they’re not already) more familiar with the language of thinking about and receiving art, which can make them more likely to visit a museum and seek to integrate artistic experiences in their lives. It sounds sort of wishful, I know, but I do believe there is importance in communityintegrated arts practice, especially when the spaces in which people learn to interact with art are diminishing daily. Q. As a young artist, what advice would you give to up and coming artists who have a difficult time finding their place in the art world? A. Being an artist the beginning of your career is the most exciting place to be right now because you have so many tools at your disposal from which you can make and share your work. From the art colle c t o r ’s p e r s p e c t i v e , i t ’s m o r e affordable to invest emerging artists and it’s an adventure to follow young artist over the course of their career. To up and coming artists: I would say optimize the power of social media to get your name out there! There are a number of web platforms that are designed specifically to promote emerging artists and make their work more accessible. Check these out and use them to your advantage. Q. Would you like to add anything in closing? A. I appreciate your interest in my work and this opportunity to reflect. I welcome more of exactly this kind of thoughtful dialogue with your readers. REVIEWS TRANSCENDENCE, the movie Do you think that technology is affecting your everyday life, controlling your life, such as our decision making, opinions and views of the world? Do you ever think about what type of world this would be if there wasn’t any technology? Picture this! If you are old enough to remember, how would the modern day world exist if we still had telephone booths on the street corners without having cell phones, or if we all indulged in playing physical games such as chess and checkers with family or friends before technology gave us a way to now play with a partner around the world. Moreover, the list goes on and on merely allowing us to be at the mercy of technology. I ask the question, would we still be human enough after our human capabilities are merged with technology as the worlds artificial intelligence takes over?

who is terminally ill and turns unruly. He gains fame from a highly controversial experiment as he creates a sentience and collective intelligence machine with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments of others have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. As he anticipates destroying the extremist who oppose, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed, participating in his own transcendence. His fellow researchers Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) who is his wife and friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), question the controversy that surround him as his thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power.

These questions and thoughts came about after looking at the trailer and clippings of the sci-fi drama TRANSCENDENCE, which will be brought to theaters worldwide during the middle of April, 2014. The film is presented by Alcon Entertainment and directed by Wally Pfister from a screenplay by Jack Paglen. Some of the biggest stars such as Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman have leading roles in the movie.

Other actors and actresses who are starring in TRANSCENDENCE include: Kate Mara, Cole Hauser, Cory Hardricas, Cillian Murphy and Clifton Collins, Jr.; nonetheless, with an awesome cast of supporting actors. With an amazing cast who acts out an amazing story, it’s no doubt that TRANSCENDENCE is a must see movie.

TRANSCENDENCE is packed with explosions. The sci-fi drama is based on a man’s quest for malevolent awareness. Johnny Depp who plays Dr. Will Caster is a research scientist in the field of Artificial Intelligence

Interviewed and written by Aaron Robinson - Editor

W

hen I think of all the beautiful love songs and ballets of Miki Howard, from listening to her music at a young age, there it was no doubt as a teenager that one would either fall in love with someone they were dating, dreamed about love from having a crush on someone they liked or either wanted to experience what love was. Miki Howard released more than 10 albums over the course of her career. The Grammy-nominated artist catalog speaks for itself, as she has memorable songs such as “Come Share My Love”, “Ain’t Nobody Like You”, and “Love Under New Management”, just to name a few.

After interviewing her multi-talented son several years ago, I knew the time would eventually come to have the pleasure and honor of interviewing and speaking to one of my favorite powerhouse entertainers, Miki Howard. For those who don’t know, Howard is a woman filled with plenty of humor, reminding me of the mother every child wished they had at a young age. During our conversation she gave insight about her new album I Choose To Be Happy, as well as shared heart-felt words of encouragement for those who have experienced the harsh life such as she has. Aaron Robinson: Hi Miki! Miki Howard: Hi Aaron! Aaron: I just want to thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule and to also let you know that I’m a fan of yours. Miki: Thank you. You’re welcome! Aaron: What does the word consciousness mean to you? Miki: Not Unconsciousness…Awareness…Mental Health. It all depends on what subject we’re talking about. Aaron: What was your inspiration to your new album I Choose To Be Happy? Miki: It was just about revisiting some of the songs that I have done over the years and something that I wanted to do and doing a live version of a more 2013, 14, 15 version. Because every time I perform everyone wants to hear these songs. It’s been a long time. So, I just felt inspired. Aaron: Great! Great! Do you have any favorite songs on the album that’s very close to your heart more so than other songs? Miki: We did a Marvin Gaye tribute song that I really love. We did “Soon I Will Be Loving You Again”. And there it may talk about a form of consciousness that you’re talking

Consciousness Magazine 44

about. It’s a cerebral type of hit, you know, that’s about consciousness. That’s one of my favorite musically, which we had to find musicians. And the albums’ live. We have two studio songs. One is “Panther” with Too Short and he’s a perfect gentleman on the record and we love him. And the other is sort of a dance record. It’s a great record! I like it! Aaron: Was there anything that you did differently from any of your albums in the past due to the industry changing? Miki: No, [just] producing. I had some help from some of my friends like Jon Nettlesbey who produced “Until You Come Back to Me” and “If You Still Love Her” in the 90’s for me. Aaron: Going though so many challenges and obstacles in your life, how did you manage to overcome them to continue to bounce back to follow your dreams? Miki: Faith in God! My faith in God! Aaron: What words of encouragement would you share to empower women who face harsh life challenges and seem as if they have no way out? Miki: You can change anything you don’t like. If you are not happy, get up, get out and get a plan to make yourself happy! Then someone will help you get somewhere. You have to really want to make a change in your life. Aaron: In your music career, if you turn back the hands of time, what area of your life would you change or is there anything to change? Miki: I don’t know if I would change anything, because during ways when you’re thinking you’re not doing great and everybody is doing better than you and you are running this race, or seems like everyone else is winning. Then when you get further down the lane, then all of a sudden they’re all gone. I’m not sure if I had changed anything, that my end result wouldn’t be the same. I’m here, I’m able to do what God has me to do and I’m thankful for my journey.

Miki: No, but I work with kids man. I work one on one with a lot of kids…a lot of kids in the industry. I think people should start reaching around and reach out to the person sitting or standing next to you. [That’s] if you are able to. I’m not able to go to Africa and do all that, but I am able to take my girlfriend’s daughter and say ‘let’s go spend a day and see what’s happening with you.’ I’m able to pay for someone’s school or education sometimes; that’s what’s important to me. I try to join organizations. I walked with the breast cancer people. My sister had breast cancer and passed away from it and my mom. So, there are things that are near and dear to my heart. There are personal things that I do like go over myself, or to someone’s house and make sure they have something to eat. I’m not a real organizational charitable person, you know. Aaron: That’s still great! You’re still giving back in a lot of ways, especially when it comes to the youth and helping them. Miki: Awwww! They are so dear to my heart! Aaron: Do you have any words of advice for any of those who are trying to make a living from the music industry? Miki: Do they have any words of advice for me? [Laugh] Oh my God! You know, I don’t know how to make way. [Laugh] I’m just an artist. I just do the art. Aaron: Would you like to add anything else that we didn’t cover before we close the interview Miki? Miki: Just God bless everybody and thank you so much for hearing.

Aaron: Very well said. Definitely. When it is all said and done, most importantly, what would you like for your fans and listeners to remember most about Miki Howard? Miki: That love is bigger than anything in the world because God is love. Anytime you are able to see it, share it, feel it, you should do that! Aaron: What other projects can your fans expect from you in the future? Are there any up and coming projects besides your new album? Miki: I wrote this book and I’ve been saying I’m going to put it out for ever. And I pray I’m going to put it out. (Laugh) The music, the music, and more concerts and music! Aaron: Nice! Nice! Are you a part of any organizations or charities? Do you work with anything related to the community? Consciousness Magazine 45
