EDITORS COMMENT’S Greetings and salutations readers! I am going to start with my highlight of this edition and that would be the Expo 2016 ( page 48) – what a fabulous day! The best so far in my eyes. I was mesmerized by the sheer essence of the event, the variety of natural products, the fashion and variation of small businesses showcasing their ideas and their visions. Last but most certainly not least, the variety of hair styles, a vision of beauty all around. This is
I will go on to express my joy when I see our youngers such as Denise Etti, clothing line ‘Covoshe’ (page 32) doing their thing, making a stand, and turning every negative into a positive. Also, I put my hands together for organisations such as BUBIC (Bring Unity Back into the Community) doing just that! Keep up the good work in 2016!

Greetings readers, lets spring into action! As one year ends and Conscious Vibes heads into its fourth year of online publication, I reminisce on what we have achieved over the past year and the direction the magazine and Conscious Vibes brand is progressing to. During the latter part of the year we Natural Hair Pageant in the House of Commons, courtesy of Dawn Butler, Brent Central Labour MP. This year I am really pleased to see and share my vision for Ms Natural Hair UK, coming into fruition, we were blessed with 16 beautiful women, on stage in London showcasing and elevating the beauty of our natural hair.
I am really pleased to share that we now have two young entrepreneurs on board writing and sharing the great work that our younger generation is doing, their names are Natasha and Zemamnesh from Our People/ ZCampbell Photography. During the news report she explained that her clothing line was created from her drive to raise awareness about gun crime in Hackney and as a tribute to her friend Shereka Marsh who was accidentally shot and killed in March 2014.

A lot of youths have the idea, but not the patience to set it up.
Denise is an inspiring young individual who gives back to the community by mentoring young people who have been excluded from school. She also attends business and design skill classes at Hackney Young Designers. Her drive for success and making a difference blew us away, so naturally we asked her to tell us how it all began. When she received the news that her friend Shereka had passed away, Denise (in remembrance of Shereka) took that devastating incident and turned it into a April 2016

positive by focusing on a clothing label. The label was named ‘Covoshe’, as this was Shereka’s nickname on social media; the line is mainly aimed at young people. Shereka’s family loves the idea and has supported Denise by purchasing items and promoting the label. Denise has also had a positive response from young people; she stated, “People have been supporting the brand beyond buying the clothes”. She is happy with the awareness that has been raised by people wearing the ‘Covoshe’ line.

Our People
Welcome to ‘Our People’, the uplifting column that celebrates positivity in our community.
When asked about her experience with ITV News, she told us “I was nervous, it was a good experience and I was surprised it was going to be live. I wanted to raise more awareness about what I was doing and happy with the interview as people could recognize what the line stood for.”
“
Once you have a passion for it, it all starts to work in your favour.
”
Denise went on to say “a lot of youths have the idea [to start a business], but not the patience to set it up”. Denise admitted that it has been stressful at times, but “once you have a passion for it, it all starts to work in your favour.” When asked what aspirations she has for her business in the future, she explained that she envisioned her fashion line being extended and eventually stocked in local retail outlets. In addition, she wanted to continue working with youths, by running business workshops in Hackney that will assist them in starting their own enterprise. 34

What Denise is doing is commendable; she has turned her grief into something positive, which has given her the passion to start the ‘Covoshe’ label – a tribute to fallen angels.

Having Natural hair has been a choice for me, ever since I felt fully comfortable embracing my natural state of being.
” unapologetically having the courage to be ourselves. Having a daughter who is 4 with a head of thick, gorgeous hair it has always been important to me to promote a positive self image to her and encourage self-love from an early age. That therefore includes giving her images she can identify with and in my opinion that starts with me. From a health curl pattern. April 2016

I think at times we forget that Afro hair has its own unique character and is beautiful and versatile, from kinks, to cornrows, to braids to locks, personally I love it all. African people for many years have been made to feel that their natural hair and conventional beauty standards. I think we are boldly evolving past this mentality and gradually beginning to love and embrace whom we are naturally.
Empress Imani is an artist set to modestly and righteously take the world by storm Expressions of Realness echo in her melodies, she continues on this journey adding her musical contributions as she goes, with her undeniable versatile, catchy style.
Empress Imani's music can be found on soundcloud and purchased on iTunes.

y name is Cheryl Johnson, I launched my very first business Fearless Steps on the 28th November 2015 designing a new and exciting range of Greeting cards starting to embrace the multicultural City we live in.
I am a modern black woman who is particular about quality. It doesn’t have to be expensive but good quality is imperative.
I wanted a black classy lady on the card, a trendy modern lady, not a black silhouette or clicked, I decided to do my own. I didn’t want actual photographs. I decided to design mine and get someone to hand draw them. I used a friend of my daughters, Phoenix Edwards a 15 year old very talented GCSE Art student for the majority of my designs. I also used a young lady Anna Kindberg, another talented 6th form artist who drew 3 Valentines designs, but I was sadly too late to received well. Strangely, my background is Finance, I have been an Investment Banker for 27 years.

ENTREPRENEUR PROFILE I was an Equities Operations Manager, a very challenging role but I loved the buzz, every day was different not an easy job at all. You always came across a different challenges and We dealt with millions sometimes billions worth, of very high risk transactions. Being resilient, thorough, professional and having a good business head, is something I now apply to my business. It isn’t easy at all, but I believe worth it. I intend to make it a success. On this journey I have faced a number of life’s challenges, in 2014 while at work I became ill, reluctantly being signed off for a rare illness diagnosed as Chorea a brain disease. After two weeks in the excellent National hospital of neurology and having every part of my body tested over and over. The consultants concluded I caught this disease from a routine cold I had in 2013 they said it would go and was untreated.
Infection had entered my nervous system and travelled to my brain. Great!! The same way it came it appears to be leaving all on its own. Really weird, appreciate good health without it you have nothing. I was not letting it beat me. This illness and my business has humbled me, I look at life differently, I want to make a difference. seen more positively especially our youngsters. Its only a small percentage who struggle and get into trouble its not the majority. There is a very talented and educated group of youngsters that will begin to change things, I know many. My daughter is 15 and wants to change!! I have started to do motivational talks in the schools, I feel really passionate about helping our youngsters especially the young ladies who may need guidance. There are so many people doing good work in our Community, we need to share the information and get involved, it’s time to stop talking. Dream Big and Reach for the Stars!!

onscious Vibes, Community Interest Community (CIC), hosted their third annual Natural Hair Expo at City of Westminster College on Sunday, April 3rd. Over thirty exhibitors participated in the event, and visitors enjoyed a large range of natural skin & hair products, African clothing, bespoke interior design, crafts, books, Caribbean and vegan dishes on offer.
Founder & Director Angela Small of Conscious Vibes, with Livingston Gilchrist, host and choreographer for the event
The Expo was a huge success, with exhibitors and organisers pleased with the positive vibes and great community spirit. Conscious Vibes’ founder Angela Small commented on how happy she was to have her vision of beautiful natural hair brothers and sisters supporting each other, and the new features of the Expo.
This year we’ve added a bookseller, a natural hair stylist and an Interior Designer showcasing amazing African inspired rugs. I just love seeing all these businesses come This event was a real family day out; there was a small play area to the side of the college, where children of the attendees at the expo could play, while some participants’ and exhibitors were dancing and enjoying the classic sing-along reggae and soulful tunes.
