EDITORS COMMENT’S Greetings one and all, hasn’t the April weather been fabulous this year? Sunday 9 April was for me one of the nicest April days I have experienced in any year and I am so glad we were blessed on this date which coincided with the 4th Annual Natural Hair & Lifestyle Expo held at the City of Westminster College, what a truly spectacular day. With the weather came the people, our best turnout to date, full of joy and smiles, it was infectious, you just couldn’t help smiling. Every year I see spectacular hairstyles being paraded throughout the day, this year we had so many activities, crew, such talent! (page 23) Exhibitors were on point, their stalls were inviting, hair stylist were busy creating spectacular hair creations and the fashion, truly African style! (page 24). The seminars were popular this year, the queues were the longest I’ve seen! Make sure you review the articles in this quarter’s magazine, there’s a great mixture of informative topics, it’s amazing what you don’t know about sugar for example. Page 54 highlights a truly remarkable ladies journey before and after discovering she was suffering with Chorea. There is so much talent amongst our youth and when I come across a young person who has dreams and aspirations, I ask them to share. Here is a young man with a dream, Darryl. Darryl is still in school and studying hard. He has a lot of potential and I believe can go far if he continues his journey as he has started it, positively! See page , where there are a few words from Darryl. Lastly, Conscious Vibes will be holding the next Ms Natural Hair UK pageant in 2018, sign up now!

Greetings all! Welcome to our spring edition of Conscious Vibes Magazine. It’s been a little while, but we are back! The magazine is packed with reviews of our 4th Annual Natural Hair Expo, which to date, has surpassed all of our expectations. As Della mentioned, the weather was fantastic, the sun shone for us both inside the venue and on the forecourt. I would like to extend a special thank you to all who attended, I am still receiving phenomenal feedback which not only highlights the fabulous vibes but also the relaxed ambience of the event and the honour of being surrounded by such awesome people, both the visitors and the Conscious Vibes team. This is what Conscious Vibes is all about, bringing the community together and empowering each other with positive vibrations! No man is an Island, but as a community we continue to rise, collaborate and enjoy each others company. One of the aims of Conscious Vibes is to encourage women of colour to wear their hair naturally. I am pleased to share that I have, since the Expo, received they are now ready to make that transition. Our work continues! Remember, our events and magazine are for all women of colour, regardless of hair type. The pageant, Ms Natural Hair UK, will be our next mission. We will be touring the UK in the next few months, please check out our website: www.consciousvibes.co.uk for regular updates.

OUR EXPERIENCE ON

BACK IN TIME

FOR BRIXTON

I

n the summer of 2016, my mother, father, three siblings and I were chosen to relive the journey that our grandparents had taken before us – to leave their homes in various parts of the Caribbean to travel to the “motherland”, Great Britain, on a show called Back In Time For Brixton. As a part of the Black and British season, the BBC ran throughout November 2016 (the Back In Time series that was previously aired on BBC2).

in the heart of Brixton, in three different houses which represented the journey through the second house was throughout the latter part of the 1950s and 1960s and the third house was throughout the 1970s through to the 1990s; experiencing different aspects of Caribbean immigrants’ lives through every period. It was a journey that went beyond my expectations. 16

We ended up on the show because my Dad, Weininger, saw an advert for it and applied on a whim. He said if we got it he thought it would be good for me and my siblings (Breanne, 17, Shelasah, 15 and Romane, 12) to see how our elders lived. Although the show is set in Brixton communities in the UK were established, my Dad was born and brought up in Hackney and my Mum, Janice, was born and brought up in Dagenham – both by parents who had emigrated from the Caribbean. Apart from my Dad, we’ve all lived in Dagenham our whole I was slightly apprehensive about taking part in the show because I was scared of what I would look like on TV and how my personality would come across to the general public. been to see Beyoncé’s concert at Wembley. We’d lost our voices because we had been screaming so much and we were both ridiculously tired as we had camped out overnight my disposal to complain to my friends about how bored I was, but it made me realise how dependent I am on it.

I was ridiculously tired on the first day of filming because I had camped out all night to see Beyoncé

Learning about the rich history of Brixton was both enlightening and frustrating. Even as the eldest sibling, at the beginning I didn’t know anything about many parts of black British history that I would consider integral to understanding the fabric of this country and why it is the way it is. For instance, the media narratives that were pushed about immigrants in the 1950s were chillingly similar (and in some cases exactly the same) to the ones we read about immigrants and refugees today.

Just as how the “rivers of blood” they warned us against at that time never came to fruition, so we must think about the 29 million Romanian immigrants Nigel Farage warned us against when they gained the same rights to work as other EU citizens in 2015 (only 220,000 showed up). Britain is a country made up of immigrants and that if the history of immigration in this country was taught and documented well enough we would not have such widespread xenophobia and racism today.

If the history of immigration in this country was taught and documented well enough we wouldnot have such widespread xenophobia and racism today

fact that, as bad as whatever we were experiencing felt, it was just a fraction of everything our grandparents and parents had to endure when they arrived in this country. My mum commented numerous times that there were many aspects of a Caribbean immigrant’s life that could not be replicated for us, such as the harsh British winter , the

particularly poignant was when we watched the Miss World beauty pageant from 1963 in which Jamaican born Carole Joan Crawford won the title that I had, and that the majority of my family members echoed, was how white she looked – especially when viewed on a black and white television. Although we duly noted the fact that a Jamaican woman managed to win a coveted title at a time when race relations between black and white people were extremely poor in Britain, what I picked up on was the fact that an extremely light-skinned woman was chosen to represent a country where most of the people are darker-skinned. It was saddening to see that colourism (the preference of lighter skin over dark) was as prevalent in the 1960s as it is now. It’s an issue that has been perpetuated for so long in society it is normalised and integrated community.

My family’s life is generally pretty hectic, so to be able to just sit down and talk to them and be together as a family was one of the most rewarding parts of this experience.

Surprisingly, being able to interact Caribbean phrase: “if you don’t hear, you without the interference of technology must feel”. was refreshing, my siblings and I ended up spending hours playing board games or just Being in Brixton made me realise there was chatting to each other rather than all sitting a part of myself that I was missing. Meeting prominent contributors to black culture in this country was incredible as well. Simply being in the presence of the likes of Rudolph Walker, Jazzie B and Janet Kay was surreal. Janet is a woman that I have grown up listening to, whether it be on a Saturday morning while my mum is cooking breakfast and listening to Lovers Rock, or at a family party where all the adults are crooning the top notes of ‘Silly Games’. To be able to actually speak to her and ask her about her experiences with the British media and being black in general was fascinating. The nicest thing about meeting May 2017

“home away from home” could be unreservedly applied. I hope the Black and British season will begin a new dialogue about the contributions of black British people to this country. Since our history is not widely taught in schools, it is important that we have some sort of representation within the media today. My real hope is that this season does not end up as a tokenistic, one-off and the increased representation of black Britons continues into regular programming of the BBC. I am truly blessed and proud to have been part of such an important documentation of the history of my grandparents and parents.

OHH SUGAR

O

hh Sugar, honey, sweetness or sugar dumpling are names commonly used to call each other, or at least this is what I found when I moved to London to work.

We all have a liking for something sweet from time to time and often succumb to our sugar cravings, yes, I know some get them more than others! But did you know that sugar cravings can lead to psychological and physical problems? All this is caused by what we eat and drink. I have worked on curbing this.

foods and snack bar products, it also hides out in some seemingly innocuous items such as bread, juices, ketchup and cereals. You can see how reading labels on food and drink is necessary (previous studies have found high-fructose corn syrup is sometimes contaminated with mercury!). Most often associated with obesity and diabetes, latest studies in the Journal of Physiology show that too much fructose can also harm the brain. 46

When we consume sugar, sweeteners or foods that appear to be nutritious, we could actusaccharin are a big culprit and (sugar free) sweeteners are often 600 or more times sweeter than cane sugar. Researchers found that ingesting foods and drinks containing fructose (which is a component of high-fructose corn syrup) and sugar for just six weeks causes troubling changes in brain function. Findings illustrate that what you eat and drink also affects how you think therefore eating high-fructose long term could alter your brain’s ability to learn and remember information.

The Rat Experiment how high-fructose intake affects brain function. One group had fructose in water for six weeks; another dined on it and also received doses of brainprotecting omega-3 fatty acids. Before the high-fructose diet began the rats were all trained to navigate a maze. After eating the sweetener for six weeks, researchers put the rats through the maze test again. The rats that didn’t receive the omega-3 brain protection were slower and experienced problems with brain signaling, which disrupts critical skills like memory and thinking. Researchers found signs of insulin resistance in the group without omega-3s which have been proved to hamper normal energy processing and can impact thoughts, emotions, memory and learning as well as hair loss. HEALTHY LIVING

Eat to Protect Your Brain Eat foods containing naturally robust levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, especially if you’ll be indulging in food containing high-fructose corn syrup. Some Omega-3–rich foods are damage to brain synapses which are critical to tasks like memory and learning - the very functions that high-fructose corn syrup or sugar could damage. The pancreas has to work 4 times as hard to manage these stresses placed on it. White sugar is known to cause stress to the liver, kidneys and adrenals causing blindness, high blood range of other illnesses including ME, Alzheimers, diabetes, mood swings, hyperactivity, hypoglycemia, infertility, bone loss, arthritis. It also starves the brain of oxygen and causes hair loss. A Body MOT Biochemical Assessment can help to address many issues raised here. Next time you have a sweet moment try to do what I do and go plant based. I use the herb Stevia or coconut sugar to sweeten foods and often reach for my favorite fruits like Melons,

How? I was admitted for two weeks I had various MRI’s, CT Scans, Lumber Puncture, Ultrasound and so many blood tests until my veins went into hiding. Nothing could be found. I kept being asked if had been abroad or had a cold. I had been a broad but it was in Europe nowhere high risk. They kept mentioning it may have been from an infection after a cold. They thought an infection had entered into my blood, then travelled to my brain via my nervous system. Odd

Very rare indeed, My Consultant told me in 20 years he had come across only one case slightly similar but not the same. On the last morning, Streptococcus a bacteria associated with meningitis was found in my blood. My Consultant was excited. I was put on a high dose of steroids to kill off the bacteria 1000 mg by drip. I left later that same day. After leaving the hospital I asked work for my sick record and realised I was off work ill for 4 days with a cold in 2013, 7 months prior when my stress levels were up.

IT’S A WRAP

The Cultural Significance of The

AFRICAN HEADWRAP

T

he African headwrap has become a symbol of exoticity and a cultural fashion statement for decades. Beautiful and versatile, each headwrap gives someone a chance to express their heritage and their love of African fashion. However, there is much more to the headwrap than the beautiful colors and fascinating style; there is a rich cultural history.

The origin of the Headwrap: The headwrap originated in sub-Saharan Africa, and was often used to convey modesty, spirituality and prosperity. Even men in Africa wear head wraps to symbolize wealth and social status. Head wrapping is literally a way that African’s for centuries have been able to non-verbally communicate their place in life. The headwrap of a woman walking down the street will tell you if she’s a widow, a grandmother, or if she’s a married young woman. It’s an element in the daily living of an African woman. Headwraps also serve a practical function in protecting the head from the rays of the sun. In West Africa, head wraps are referred to as ‘gele’ in Yoruba or ‘ichafu’ in Ibo.
