innovative new service or indeed the work of some of the world’s finest NGO’s and charities which helps many millions of people in so many different ways. Hotels have paved their own path by working closely with a wide range of charities, and there is hardly a hotel today, which is not involved with some cause or another. In our minds, the most effective collaborations are those right on our own doorsteps, as involving your staff with local initiatives roots the hotel much more firmly within its surrounding and communities. This is not to say that collecting and encouraging donations for other worthy causes around the world is not an initiative to take on as well, however, usually being actively engaged with issues that concern us at home are invariably those more welcomed by the charities themselves, as there is a much more active exchange of human resources by doing so. For this month’s issue we have endeavoured to cherry pick those charitable causes that some of our member hotels as well as suppliers work with, and which seemed most worthy of a mention. “Which” nevertheless is a double-edged sword, as every charity really is worth a mention and it has been a difficult task to be in the position of giving one laudable cause precedence over another. However, we will be taking this topic up again soon as there is much to write about and just not enough time nor space on this occasion.

The Landmark London The Fourth Feathers Youth Club Project The Landmark London will be providing financial assistance and volunteers for the project. The project is about supporting youths who live in the Marylebone and surrounding areas. The objective is to give opportunities for children and young people to positively develop the way through informal education like sports activities. More information here The Stitches-in-time Project The Stitches-in-Time “English for Sewing” course aims to help women to develop their confidence by acquiring new skills in textiles whilst extending their spoken english language, which in turn would enable them to progress towards further training or employment. They will learn basic sewing techniques, how to use a sewing machine and work on the final patchwork project. Moreover, the end-product will be placed on display at The Landmark London. Church Street Ward Clean-up Project Volunteers from The Landmark London have joined the Church Street Ward volunteers, participating in a Ward Clean-up Project, to create a more positive environment for residents to live and work in. The Landmark London team is happy to be able to share in providing this effort to their community by assisting not only with financial matters, but also other means of support. Original Beans’ Femmes De Virunga project in Eastern Congo is being funded by the Giving Wings Foundation – an organisation created to support women and girls in gaining independence and self-sufficiency through education and healthcare initiatives. The foundation also promotes awareness on global women’s issues. Eastern Congo is known as one of the most perilous places on earth to be a woman, yet at the same time, women play the key role in protecting and restoring forests, since they are responsible for collecting firewood. To empower women, also as stewards of forest conservation, Original Beans and Giving Wings are collaborating to strengthen the social and economic position of women farmers producing the Femmes de Virunga cacao. Comprehensive programmes are running to develop cacao quality assurance as a female domain: providing training on the selection of seedlings, nursery management, harvest and post-harvest treatment, and tasting and testing of cacao. In order to provide further growth and long term support and security for the women farmers, the project also provides literacy courses, enterprise and entrepreneurship training, and an agricultural broadcast programme to create links between listening groups and strengthen relations. Since Original Beans initiated an organic cacao sector in Eastern Congo in 2008, more than fifteen thousand farmers in communities along Virunga National Park produce organic certified cacao, incomes have nearly tripled and on-farm deforestation rates have decreased by up to 50%. For every bar sold, one tree is planted More information on Original Beans here and on Giving Wings here.

STORY OF THE MONTH Organisations that motivate us

ITP International Tourism Partnership has launched a new Water Measurement Initiative Building on the success of the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative, now used by over 21,500 hotels around the world, the International Tourism Partnership (ITP) is announcing ambitious plans to standardise water measurement in the industry. Water scarcity is a recognised global problem, with demand for water projected to exceed supply by 40% by 2030. By the same year, over a third of the world’s population will be living in areas of high water stress. As part of a rapidly growing tourism sector and a large consumer of water in its own right, the hotel industry needs to take action now if it is to mitigate risk going forward. ITP’s water working group has been addressing water security, risk and conservation for the last 2 years. Outcomes include ITP’s Know How Guide on Water Conservation, ITP’s stakeholder dialogue day on water and a Water Risk Assessment Report commissioned by ITP from the Stockholm International Water Institute. The group will now collaborate to create a standardised approach to measuring and communicating water consumption across the hotel industry, for the benefit of the customer. ‘Since effective water measurement is the first step towards efficient water management, the Hotel Water Measurement Initiative is a natural progression for the International Tourism Partnership’s water agenda. We are delighted that our members will be proactively taking part in this Working Group.’ Fran Hughes, Head of Programmes, International Tourism Partnership. The objective of the Hotel Water Measurement initiative (HWMI) is to develop a methodology to enable hotel companies and individual properties to measure and report on water consumption in a consistent way. The working group responsible for the creation of the methodology is composed of ITP member companies with KPMG as technical consultants, supported by a stakeholder steering group of global experts, including the Stockholm International Water Institute, Water Footprint Network, World Resources Institute and the Carbon Trust. http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=45556704f9

Other initiatives we believe are worth looking at: Sport Inspired is a social enterprise that works with schools, businesses, sports clubs, local authorities and philanthropists. By working in partnership with these bodies they encourage the active participation of disenfranchised children into active sport, and thereby create inspiration, action and brokering new and exciting relationships. Ocean Cleanup: we are all affected by the 8million tonnes of plastic which go into the global oceans and seas every year. Nearly every beach on the world by now has at at least one bit of plastic on it. Especially for us hoteliers offering people carefree holidays, this is a huge concern. Founded by an inspirational 20year old Dutchman called Boyan Slat, Ocean Cleanup is the first foundation to tackle this issue on a global level. Clean Conscience: we have talked about them before, but the issue of what to do with all the used soaps in a hotel is still a major one. Clean Conscience will come and take care of it for you, reducing your wastage by a considerable amount Plan Zheroes: again another organisation whose praises we can’t sing enough- they to inspire organisations to become ‘zero food waste heroes’. To help them achieve this goal they have developed an online, interactive map to link up organisations who can donate surplus food with those who really need it. This includes a huge range of charitable organisations working with the estimated 4 million people in the UK suffering from food poverty. As we said earlier, there are thousands of amazing charities out there, which you as a hotel can work with to make tangible differences, these are just a few we can vouch for and whom we like working with. But please do tell us more about the ones that you have a good relationship with, we would love to hear all about it. Email us at media@consideratehoteliers.com
