Thursday 16th April 2014 AWARD ENTRY DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 2nd MAY! Well, you asked for more time and now you have it, so please make the most of the extra two weeks now in play. In the meantime we shall be at Hotelympia running workshops (Will you be there?), the Savoy achieves SRA’S top score and CH Members run the distance.

About Time – It has almost become a tradition. We want as many of you as possible to have the chance to enter the Considerate Hotel of the Year 2014 Awards..If that means giving you more time to enter, then so be it. We have added an extra 14 days to the deadline so there is absolutely no reason not to enter without having to burn the midnight oil – well, not too much! If you are entering one entry, six or indeed all of them, Friday 2nd May is your new target date. Your Time is here and now!

Considerate Hoteliers & Hotelympia! During the period 28th April until 1st May the world of hospitality heads to London’s docklands and feasts their eyes on an array of new products, hoards of splendid exhibitors and exciting and unique attractions. Sense, sensibility and The Considerate Hotelier’s Workshops will deliver a programme designed to give hoteliers valuable training and education in key sustainability topics. The best news of all is that for CH members it is free! Don’t waste this opportunity – there are savings to be made, planets to save and by golly, it would be good to see you! SRA & FoodSave Considerate Hoteliers are pleased to support an initiative being run by the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) to help food service businesses including hotel restaurants reduce the amount of food they waste. The SRA is running FoodSave, funded by the Mayor of London in partnership with the European Regional Development Fund and the London Waste and Recycling Board, for SMEs in London. Restaurants of all kinds are benefitting from taking part in the month-long audits which involve staff logging the food they throw in the bin which sits on a set of scales connected to a tablet programmed with information about the site’s menu and food costs. The SRA then works with the catering teams to find ways of reducing food waste and tracks this over time. The SRA have also just started running a “snap shot” waste audit providing a high level overview of food waste over one week. Using all the insights from the detailed FoodSave audits this is a condensed version of the project which will allow more businesses to take part. A review of the first ten participating restaurants found average annual savings of 1.7 tonnes (equivalent to 24 180 litre bins) and £5,500 in direct food costs. helping them to reassess purchasing and storage practices as well as rejig their menus. Mark Jarvis, Head Chef at the Bingham Hotel, which recently completed the FoodSave programme, said: “FoodSave really helped us focus on inventory waste. We now pay much closer attention to inventory checks and have made changes such as making bread in house. News from our Members (Also known as the Bravo Zulus) The Savoy is thrilled to announce that Kaspar’s Seafood Bar and Grill has received a Three Star Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) Sustainability Rating and is the only five star London hotel restaurant to have achieved this recognition. The Residence Ascott celebrates the opening of Ascott Raffles City Chengdu in style! 160 guests joined management and staff during the ceremony, which also marks the start of Ascott's 30th Anniversary.
