Cometh the time, cometh the Planet

Planet Earth needs an hour of your time This Saturday (March 29th) at 8.30 p.m. WWF Earth Hour is the world’s biggest celebration for our amazing planet, hundreds of millions of people from across the world coming together in a symbolic and spectacular light outs display. It’s a brilliant reminder that together we can make change happen, and it gives us a chance to think about the small things we can do every day to help create a brighter future. So whether you reflect under the stars or celebrate by candlelight, it’s a moment to say you’ll do your bit to protect our planet – not just for one hour, but every day. Because turning out the lights is just the beginning….
Landfill Tax to Increase Documents released with Chancellor George Osborne’s Budget speech revealed Landfill Tax will rise in line with inflation from 201516, but there was no long-term plan mentioned. It also revealed that the Environment Agency is to receive additional funding to tackle waste crime. “The Government intends to provide further longer-term certainty about the future level of landfill tax rates once the consultation process on testing regime has concluded, but in the meantime is committed to ensuring that the rates are not eroded in real terms”, the document said. If you have already achieved zero waste to landfill then you have nothing to worry about. Do tell.
Maldives stay afloat Getaway destination of choice for Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, the Maldives is undoubtedly one of the world’s most luxurious holiday destinations, but that status is under threat. Some 80 per cent of its islands are less than four feet above sea level and the government have expressed concerns that climate changeinduced increases in sea levels could submerge much of the nation. Plans are already being put in place to protect the tourism industry, with Italian designer Michele Puzzolante of MPD Designs having released proposals for the development of solar-powered floating villas that would serve as holiday accommodation in place of the country’s current resorts. Titled Solar Floating Island, his concept is comprised of floating pontoons that can be tethered together to form a complete holiday destination. It would include conference rooms, dining and drinking spaces, a spa and boutique, staff quarters and a marina in addition to various luxury suites. Puzzolante estimates the entire development could be built for $145 million (£87 million). Individual villas would include outdoor decking, dining facilities and, http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=64dcebf71a&e=[UNIQID]

most impressively, an underwater “observation bulb” that would allow guests to admire surrounding sea life while ensconced in the villa. Such a feature is already a reality elsewhere: the Manta Underwater Room in Zanzibar is partially underwater, with guests sleeping in a bedroom that stands 13ft below the surface of the Indian Ocean. Puzzolante claims the Maldivian government is supportive of his proposals to make the Solar Floating Island a reality, but other plans to construct hotels that are found partially underwater have been beset by problems. Assertions by the firm Deep Ocean Technology to construct Water Discus, an underwater hotel, in Dubai have yet to come to fruition.
More Floods? #Openforbusiness is the plucky hashtag being used by weatherbattered hospitality and tourism businesses throughout the UK. To help flood-affected hospitality businesses get back on their feet, the Institute of Hospitality has issued a free Flood Resources Guide for use during and after flooding.
News from our Members The Savoy – It’s been quite a year for the Savoy who have been awarded Fairmont Hotels & Resorts’ Sustainable Hotel of the Year Award. If ever there was the perfect example of luxury and sustainability coming together so successfully this must be it – a lesson for many – it can be done! Bryn Elltyd Eco-Guest House (Snowdonia) – John and Ceilia Whitehead would not claim to be bathed in luxury but they do offer home comforts in their mountain outpost and can boast of being carbon zero via use of solar PV, solar electric and biomass – not a whiff of gas in evidence, just clean, fresh unpolluted mountain air. Poles apart maybe but Bravo Zulus go to these two members who have achieved so much – in their own way. Two more individual members earned their honorary spurs recently at the University of West London Hospitality Awards - Thomas Kochs, General Manager, Claridge’s London – was awarded Master of Business Administration (Hon MBA) and Stuart Johnson, General Manager, Brown’s Hotel London was awarded Master of Science (Hon MSc). That’s four Bravo Zulus this week – things are hotting up!

Island in Scotland is the first 100% self-sustaining place on Earth! We have new heroes. They are the residents of Scottish forward thinking island, Eigg. Eigg has a pristine landscape, a broad array of sustainable strategies and gets over 90% of its energy from renewable sources. Along with its witty accent, the Scots offer an example of how to live well, without fossil fuels and rampant ecological and environmental degradation. For more information here.
Two More Global Heroes Doug & Kris Tompkins, successful entrepreneurs, founders of outdoor equipment company North Face and clothing firm Esprit have purchased millions of wild acres in Chile and Argentina at a cost of millions of dollars, have conserved it, restored it, sensitively providing access and other facilities so that they can present it to the two countries for national parks status “the highest form of protection for land you can get”. There is more to be said on this fantastic story and further details can be found on the Daily Telegraph website - Geoffrey Lean.
